Tyler

SPLASH.

I opened my eyes in shock, suddenly plunged into freezing cold water.

How was this possible? I thought. The water...it had to have been at least twenty blocks away.

I shook my head. Not important. I had to get to the surface.

I looked to what felt like up, but it couldn't have been, because I was staring directly into an abyss of water that got darker and darker the further it went.

My lungs contracted, suddenly realizing that there was no air down here.

I frantically turned around and around until I saw it. The ocean got slightly lighter in color as I looked what felt as though it was below me.

I swam as fast as I could towards it, my lungs screaming for air.

If I survive that fall to only drown... I thought, the ocean's color getting lighter as I went.

I broke the surface, gasping for air, my lungs filling up again.

Only problem: it had apparently started to storm. What was going on with the weather?

Waves crashed into me, pulling me under for a few more seconds, but I managed to keep my head above water long enough to avoid drowning.

I just survived a two thousand block fall, I thought to myself. Wonder how many people can say that.

I looked around for the others. Had they made it, or did some omnipotent being suddenly decide that I was the one worth saving?

No, there were was the back of two blonde heads that I could only assume were Skylar and Shane. Cameron flailed in the waves, but somehow managed to keep his head above water, but that most likely had to do with Alyssa holding him up. Quinn wasn't seeming to have any trouble keeping herself above water, but her face was scrunched up, as if she was focusing.

Two people were missing. Jenna, and...

The thought struck me like a ton of bricks as I remembered one crucial detail.

Macey can't swim.

"Guys!" I called, and they all turned towards me with varying degrees of success, Cameron getting pulled under a few times along with Shane.

"Have any of you-" The waves crashed over my head. "-seen Macey?"

"No!" Alyssa yelled back. "No sign of her, or Jenna either!"

I looked around frantically, searching for my little sister. I was supposed to protect her. That was the new number one rule Dad had given me before he disappeared, I couldn't fail him, even if I wasn't really sure if he had told us the truth about himself.

"Tyler! There!" I heard from behind me, and saw Cameron pointing towards something.

I turned to see a flash of Macey's familiar red hair appear above the waves for a second, before a wave crashed against her and she disappeared.

"She can't swim!" I yelled in explanation to the others, and swam as fast as I could towards her.

I stopped for a second to see if she'd appear again, and sure enough, she appeared from underneath the water for long enough for me to hear a scream, and she disappeared again.

I had to get to her, I knew that much. Unfortunately for me, the distance was at least thirty blocks from me. I wouldn't make it before she drowned.

You just broke your number one rule, I thought to myself. You can't even save your little sister from water, how do you expect to save your dad from an all-powerful demon-thing?

Suddenly, the water shot to the sides, causing me to fall onto the soaked ground that had been underneath the water not two seconds prior. The water formed makeshift walls, and they moved and crashed like they had before, but not a drop fell on most of the river.

I got on my feet, and stared. How was this even...what was happening?

Those thoughts vanished when I saw Macey on the ground about thirty blocks away.

I didn't think, I ran, and running goes much faster than swimming. I made it to her to see her curled up in the fetal position, shivering, her eyes squeezed shut and soaked from head to toe.

"Macey, thank Notch, you're okay." I said. "Come on, we've got to get out of here before whatever this is stops happening."

She didn't say anything, and didn't do anything but stay put.

"Macey, come on, we have to go."

When she still didn't do anything, I was beginning to consider picking her up and carrying her out of the giant ditch, but then she nodded slowly, getting to her feet.

I walked down the ditch so that Macey wouldn't have to run, looking for the others.

It wasn't long until I saw their figures up ahead.

"Hey, guys! We're oka-"

I faltered when I got closer, seeing what was happening.

Shane and Alyssa were attempting to carry an unconscious Jenna out of the ditch, Skylar and Cameron helping as best they could.

And Quinn?

Quinn was standing in the middle of the ditch holding her hands out on either side of her, her eyes shut.

"Wha-"

"Don't ask questions yet!" Quinn exclaimed as Macey and I got closer to the group. "Get out of here before I lose control of it, okay? I'll be fine getting back out."

"Woah, Quinn, what is-"

"Tyler, I'm serious." She interrupted. "If you want all of this water to come crashing back down on your head, then be my guest."

"Okay, okay!" I said, and ran over to the others.

"What happened to Jenna?" I asked.

"She's not dead, thankfully." Skylar answered. "Though she may want to be when she remembers about..."

She faltered, not wanting to bring up what had happened only five minutes ago.

"I think she passed out from lack of oxygen." Cameron changed the subject. "I don't remember seeing her trying to stay above water. I never saw her above at all."

"You don't think she was trying to kill herself?" Shane asked, attempting to help Alyssa get both herself and Jenna through the wall of water.

"I don't think she was necessarily trying to kill herself," Cameron explained. "But I don't think she was necessarily trying to live, either."

"Well, I would probably do the same, to be honest." Skylar said. "After seeing that. I don't blame her at all."

"What about Quinn?" I asked. "Did she tell you guys anything?"

They shook their heads as Alyssa and Jenna made it through the wall. Shane and Cameron stepped into it, being pulled up by the current and jumping out of the other side once they reached the top.

"You want to know what I think?" Skylar asked.

"What?"

"I think this mess we've gotten ourselves into is about to become a lot bigger."

OH MAN QUINN'S GOT EPIC POWERS YEAH

I've been planning this since the start of the book, I'm kind of surprised you guys didn't catch on, but that's okay, because now I have at least one plot twist! :D

Also, what do you guys think about Jenna? How do you think she's going to react when she has time to process that Jeremy's gone?

(Fun fact: Quinn has used her powers once before this chapter. I want to see if you guys can figure out where :D)
