Alesa

My back felt numb.

I had been sitting up against the rough stone wall for what felt like hours. There was nothing else to do besides sit there.

Sit there...and think.

If you knew me, you'd know that I'm not, and never have been, the type to just sit and play damsel in distress. I was getting out of this situation, one way or another.

I'll admit it, originally, the only thoughts going through my mind were panicky. Things like "oh my Notch I'm actually going to die holy crap oh my god" had been spinning through my mind for quite some time before I managed to calm myself down.

"You have to think." I told myself. "Do you know that Sky guy from anywhere?"

The answer: no. I had never seen him before in my life, although we did appear to have pretty similar fashion sense. I didn't recognize anything about his face, from the dark glasses covering his eyes to his worried expression, eyebrows curved up and mouth slightly open. I knew for a fact I had never met him anywhere, ever.

And yet, there was something familiar about him. Seeing him suddenly made a bunch of scenes flash through my mind I didn't recognize.

Two people, a man and a woman, being completely doused in a bucket of ice water, sticks of butter landing on their heads along with it.

The woman running towards the man, spraying blue silly string all over him.

The both of them looking at each other with friendly smiles.

"Friends?"

"Always. As long as you agree to help change the diapers."

I shook my head, and the scenes disappeared. I had never seen either of those people before, and the second I tried to bring up the strange "memories" again, I couldn't.

"Odd." I thought. "But it doesn't matter now."

What mattered most was getting out of here.

I'd been staring at the two guards standing guard at the door to my cell. They were the only two standing there, and they never seemed to switch out. Problem was, they never seemed to get tired, either. They had been standing perfectly straight, staring at nothingness, for as long as I had been sitting. A set of keys floated by the side of one of them.

I had a plan. If it went wrong, I could definitely get in loads of trouble, but apparently, I was a form of bait. If I was important, that demon would keep me alive.

I stood, my legs hurting, but I ignored it.

I kicked the wall as hard as I could.

"LET ME OUT!" I yelled, attracting the attention of both of the guards. "LET ME OUT OF HERE! I WANT TO GO HOME!"

The guards turned, opening the door to the cell and walking in, still keeping the door blocked.

"I'd hush up if I were you." One of them said.

"Yeah, he doesn't take well to yellers." The other grinned. "You'll be dead faster than you can think, girly."

I backed away from them, trying my best to cry, which wasn't hard, given my situation.

"LET ME OUT!" I yelled again, tears starting to roll down my cheeks. "I HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING WRONG, PLEASE!"

"Don't you listen, you moron?" One of them said, getting closer, and leaving an opening between me and the door.

I took the opportunity, and bolted. I ran as fast as I could past the guards and managed to take them by surprise.

"HEY!" They both yelled, and started chasing after me.

Exit, exit, where was the exit...

I turned down almost every corner I could see, running through hallways that all looked the same until finally, I was sure I lost the guards.

I took a second, stopping to catch my breath. I had made it. I was out of the prison, and now all I had to do was find the exit, and I'd be home free.

I froze when I heard the voice.

"Did you seriously think it would be that easy?"

I moved to run, but some sort of invisible force threw me backwards into a wall and held me there. The girl I had seen before, Skylar, was standing in front of me, only it wasn't her. She didn't have eyes that practically glowed red.

The demon sighed. "I mean, I know my Shadows can be idiots, but really?"

I summoned all my courage and stared him in the eye. "Let me go."

"I have a better idea." He said. "You're going to go back to that cell, and you're going to play your proper role. You're bait, and nothing more. You're the pitiful damsel in distress, and that's how it's going to stay. Understand me?"

I glared at him. "No."

"Funny, you think you have options." He said, and suddenly, my arm was on fire.

It wasn't actually, but I still screamed, the burning pain feeling as though my arm was being pressed against a hot furnace.

"Feeling a little more cooperative now?" He asked, and the pain dulled.

"You...you won't kill me." I said. "You need me for bait."

"Don't test your luck." He said. "I've still got the kid. I can use her if you become too disagreeable."

I gulped. So I wasn't safe. There was nothing keeping him from killing me, and he would if he wanted to.

"Now, let's get you back where you belong." He grinned, and the last thing I remember seeing before everything went black was the girl's eyes flickering green for a split second.
