Chapter Twenty
Chapter's song: Boys like you by Who is Fancy, Meghan Trainor and Arianna Grande. Love this song!!!
The sun was shining brightly in the morning. Our kitchen felt warm as the sunrays seeped through the windows. My hands hugged the cup of coffee in front of me. A faraway sight left my lips. I couldn't stop thinking about the way Bryan had touched my hair or his intense gaze. Someone bumped me on the shoulder making me spill my drink.
"Seth!"
"Oh please, don't turn into one of those corny girls!" He whined as he slumped in one of the kitchen chairs. He wore a checkered pajama pants and a sponge bob t-shirt.
I raised an eyebrow. "What girls? And nice t-shirt, by the way."
"Thank you." He got up. "It's my favorite." He walked to the coffee machine, grabbed a mug and poured some for him. "And you know, all those stupid girls that are all the time sighing," he signaled me accusingly with a spoon, "like you just did."
I rolled my eyes. "First of all, I didn't sigh dreamily," I made quotation marks with my hands before getting a napkin. "It's lame, okay?" Seth raised an eyebrow while pressing his lips in a tight line. "And secondly," I dabbed at the coffee splatter, "There's nothing there."
My little brother placed his mug next to mine and sat by the table again. "You didn't notice the way he was looking at you." My stomach rolled. This was the second time someone said something like that. Could it be true?
Seth grinned at me. "Oh come on, just ask me what you're dying to!"
The kitchen's door screeched as our grandma came into the room. "Good morning, kids!" Juno chirped in. Her brows furrowed as her eyes moved from me to Seth and vice versa. "Everything okay?"
I glared at my brother for a moment. "Everything's fine, Juno." My lips quirked up at her wide smile, "How's the future bride-to-be?"
Her eyes sparkled excitedly before she crossed the room to get coffee. "I'm so excited for the wedding!" Seth glanced at me with a we-need-to-talk look. "Especially since we want to get married as soon as possible."
My eyes widened and Seth's brows furrowed. "Why so soon?" I asked nonchalantly, trying not to sound as freaked out as I felt.
"Oh, didn't I tell you?" She turned to us, a cup of coffee in one hand while the other cradled her belly. "I'm pregnant."
Seth choke while drinking coffee, coughing loudly, making a huge mess on the kitchen floor. My lips twitched as I suppressed a smile, because come on, Juno was almost seventy. No one can get pregnant at that age.
However, her smile was so wide that it made me doubt all biological explanations. My brows furrowed. No effing way. That's not possible. Seth was still coughing loudly next to me when she burst out laughing.
I breathed out relieved. "You should have seen your faces!" she said between laughs, her mug shaking violently, while spilling a bit of coffee. It didn't matter since Seth had made a huge mess before, anyway. Her laugh was contagious and I ended up laughing with her, especially because Seth looked like he was about to have a fit.
"You're not funny, Juno!"
That made her giggle even harder. "You need to have the talk again, Seth?" She left the mug on the counter and was completely bent over, holding her belly, laughing hard.
Seth rolled his eyes while glaring at us. "I'm not cleaning this up!" He said in his most serious tone. That sobered Juno up.
Still hiccupping, she rubbed her forehead, "You are going to clean this mess because I'm your grandmother and I say so."
I was trying not to laugh again. Seth's eyes blazed. "You can't take out the grandma card right now, Juno!"
She was smiling as she held up her mug. "But I can, dear boy."
He stomped on the floor like a five-year-old. "That's so unfair!"
Juno shrugged. "Life's a bitch." I couldn't hold it anymore and I started to laugh, making her laugh again.
"This is called bullying," Seth muttered before trotting to the closet and grabbing the mop. Juno bobbed her head gesturing me to go outside with her to finish my coffee. I complied, leaving my poor little brother cursing after us.
Our house had a small patio that Juno tended to. It was small but also kind of cozy. She had placed several pots in different sizes and colors around our patio table. This was my favorite part of our house.
She placed her mug on the table, with a soft smile. "So, when are you going to freak out on me as well?"
I brought my knees to my chest, enjoying the warm sunrays. "I don't think we should, Juno."
"And yet, you do."
I sighed. "I think you deserve to be happy."
"But?" she raised an eyebrow as I lowered my knees.
"But isn't it too fast? You barely know the man! Do you really want to get married in two months?"
She shrugged before taking a sip. "Why wait? I'm almost seventy and God knows how much I'll live!"
I rolled my eyes. "You're in fantastic shape, Juno. You know it." With my finger, I traced the rim of my coffee before glancing at her. "I'm not sure if we should stay here, though." Juno's eyes clouded with worry as I looked at my brother for a second. "You're going to start a new life, and we really don't want to come home and find you at it on the kitchen table," I joked about it, but knowing Juno, it could happen.
Her lips pursed. "You two are blowing things out of proportion. I won't marry, then."
My shoulders sagged and a pang of guilt played in my chest. "No, Juno. You don't have to do that."
She was serious as she said, "You know I'd do anything for you."
I reached out for her hand. "I do. But we also want you to be happy. And being with Mr. Gomez makes you happy."
She placed her palm on top of mine. "What if I promise to be much more careful and keep all the doors locked and you know, don't make any noise at all."
I burst out laughing. "Poor Mr. Gomez! You can't ask him to do the same!"
Juno leaned back. "We'll work it out. We always do." She was probably right. She always managed to get things done her way, anyway. Shaking my head, I stifled a yawn as she added, "what about you and Bryan, huh?"
I almost spit out my coffee, much like Seth did. "There's nothing going on!" I said defensively. Maybe too defensively. Her eyes glinted mischievously as a knowing smile crossed her face. "Seriously."
"I like him," she said in a sing-song voice.
"You've mentioned it. Like a million times." I muttered sulking. Juno started to chuckle just as Seth joined us outside. He still looked pissed as he took a seat next to me. But then we all knew that he couldn't be mad at us for long.
"We're not moving." I blurted out knowing well that he wanted to talk about it sooner or later. I figured sooner was best.
His brows furrowed as he glanced at me bemused. "Why not?"
"Really, Seth? Do you really want to move?" Juno asked him in a serious tone. I knew she was messing with him. I looked them over the rim of my coffee mug as brought the mug to my mouth. I stifled a smile.
Seth shifted on his seat, uncomfortable. "We thought you wanted some privacy," he gazed at me for help.
"We?" I raised an eyebrow.
He narrowed his eyes, glancing at Juno and me for a moment. "You're messing up with me." I cracked up at that while he crossed his arms. "You know what? Maybe I need to get a fucking job to get out of the fucking house so you can stop fucking with me."
"Language, Seth." Juno commented nonchalantly.
"We love you," I patted him on the shoulder.
"Well, you certainly have a shitty way to show it." Juno and I shared a look and we burst out laughing. Seth muttered another curse and stood up.
"Don't be like that!" I yelled at him before he got inside the house.
"He knows we love him," Juno murmured before finishing her coffee.
Juno was right. He knew we loved him and we all knew that we really couldn't move. Juno was everything to us as we were to her. We just needed to make some adjustments, that's all.
