Chapter Thirty-Two

Chapter's song: Kiss me by Sixpence Non The Richer (it's an old song, but a classic!)

"Wow. You certainly fished, huh?" Andy quipped as soon as he saw me.

My clothes were dripping, and I was in a funky mood, not quite sure about what was going on. The walk back was silent and Bryan glanced at me every other minute, but I was angry.

At me. At him.

At the whole thing in general.

Plus, I didn't have a stupid sleeping bag and now my clothes were all wet.

I glared at Andrew. A stay-out-of-my-way glare.

His brows creased, he tilted his head and opened his mouth to say something, but I walked away from him.

I need to change.

Monica was nowhere in sight as I got inside our tent. My backpack was next to her sleeping bag. The only one there. Sighing, I grabbed a fresh pair of clothes and went to the bathroom to change.

My bandages were dirty, so I took them off, cringing at the red slash I had. Slowly, I washed it with clear water and soap, hoping that it didn't infect or anything. I was drying it with paper towels, when Monica stumbled inside the rustic bathroom.

"There you are!" She rubbed a palm across her face, and her breathing was labored. She'd ran. "Andrew said you're either PMSing or something happened between you and Bryan."

I rolled my eyes. "I'm not. Everything is fine." I patted my hand too hard and I cringed as the paper caught up with one of the knots from the stitches.

Monica stepped closer to me. She took the paper towel from my hand and threw it in the bin. She pulled another paper towel and carefully, helped me dry the wound. "Want to talk about it?"

I shook my head. "There's nothing to talk about. One moment we were fishing, and the next..." I glanced across the room. It was empty. "We were kissing, but I don't know what's going on. He kisses me whenever the hell he wants and the worst part is that I let him!" My tone was louder by the end of my rant. I bit my lip. I hoped no one heard that.

A slow smile crossed her face. My wound was better. "I think you should grab him by the shoulder and kiss the crap out of him in front of everyone!"

My shoulders sagged, I leaned against the sink, exhaling slowly. "The thing is, that I don't even know him." Monica snorted. "Like really know him. I know a bit about his family and such, but I feel like a stupid open book and he just gives me snippets."

"Then, make him talk to you."

"How?"

"By using your charms, Jess! You're gorgeous and he's nuts about you, that much is clear."

My cheeks flushed. "He's not."

Monica smirked. "He's been strolling around our tent for the last ten minutes with a clean bandage on his hands." I glanced at the door. It was open, but I couldn't see the camp site, where all the tents were. "He's head over heels for you, chica!" She leaned beside me and shoved me playfully by the hip.

I chuckled, my whole face feeling warmer. "He asked me out," I confessed, glancing at my shoes.

She shoved me on the hip once more but it was not playful at all, I almost lose my balance. "What the hell? Why hadn't you told me?" My friend placed both hands on her hips and glared at me.

I couldn't help but smile at her. Motherhood developed that kind of glare, I was sure. "It happened yesterday! We're going out on Saturday." Suddenly, I doubted it all. "I mean, he told me he wanted to take me out, that's a date, right? Because he never used that word and it could mean anything andꟷ"

"For fuck's sake, just shut up," Monica rolled her eyes, shaking her head. "You're worse than my Carlitos on Christmas eve."

I opened my mouth to say something, but I cracked up. "Monica, you're such a Mom! And I bet you're jealous when a girl comes closer to your boy."

"You're damn right! I don't let any slut come closer to my baby!"

Shaking my head, I stared at her. Are you serious? She did. "He's a toddler!"

"Exactly! Girls are much more advanced than boys!"

Oh.My.God. "I pity your future daughter-in-law."

Monica's eyes narrowed. "Don't change the subject, Jess."

I pursed my lips. "We're going out on Saturday, that's it."

"Well...just make sure to take a condom with you," she wriggled her eyebrows.

Gosh. Why is everyone assuming I'm going to sleep with him in the first date? Maybe if you weren't such a prude, you would. Ugh.

Monica studied me as I fidgeted my feet. "Are you a virgin?" She whispered, sort of ashamed for me. Pathetic, huh?

"Bryan is waiting." I pushed myself forward and walked out of the bathroom, knowing full-well that this conversation was anything but over. Good grief.

Monica was right. Bryan was pacing around our tent. His eyes looked up when I neared him and a small grin flashed through his face. "Hey, I got you this." He bobbed his head to the right, where the cabin was. "Come on." I rubbed my left hand on my jeans before following after him. I did glance behind me and Monica smirked. I rolled my eyes.

The cabin was just a plain office with a desk and a couple of chairs on either side. It had two doors. I supposed one was the bathroom and the other where they kept all their special equipment. Hopefully, sleeping bags included.

Bryan pulled out a chair and sat in front of the other one. Slowly, warily, I made my way to him and sat down. His stormy eyes followed my every movement, and I was acutely aware of how he kept studying me.

In silence, he set to work. His hand reached out for my arm. He treated it like it was made of porcelain, like it could break. My skin felt warm wherever he touched and my throat felt sandy as I swallowed hard.

"Are you okay, Jess?" He asked without looking at me, while he unrolled the bandage and rolled it on my hand with utter care.

"I'm fine," I muttered, trying to ignore the way my heart was racing or the way my whole body was tingling, especially since I knew he wanted to ask more.

His eyes cut to me. "Are you sure?" His burning stare was making me feel on edge.

My right foot started to bounce, and my hands felt sweaty. I licked my lips and Bryan's eyes followed the movement before looking up at me again.

My hand was all set to go, when his brows creased. "Jess, you can talk to me if something is botheringꟷ"

"I'm a virgin, okay?" I raised both hands at the same time I took a deep breath. "Not by choice. I didn't have time to screw people around since I've been trying to support Seth and help Juno and that doesn't leave much time for fun. Or dating. And probably my fifteen-year-old brother has a more active sex life than me!" Bryan didn't move a muscle. He stared at me, amusement flickering through his eyes as I rambled on. "And you can't go around kissing people! It's unnerving! I don't know what the hell I'm doing and you're my freaking boss for Christ's sake!" My breathing was labored as I leaned back.

Holy shit. Did I just say that I'm a virgin? Crap. Crap. Crap.

Bryan's lips twitched as he suppressed a smile. "I don't kiss people, Jess. I kiss you." My stomach clenched at his words. He leaned back on his chair as I rubbed the back of my neck, completely embarrassed. "But you're right." He shrugged. "I should stop, because you clearly have conflicted emotions about it."

No! Don't stop! I take it back!

"Okay." My tone was barely a whisper, as I fidgeted with my jersey.

"We should get your sleeping bag from the warehouse." His chair screeched as he pulled it back before standing up.

Fuck. I just screwed things up.

You also stood up for yourself. He now knows that you're not a girl to be toying around. Still sucks.

Bryan opened the first door and sure enough, the walls were covered with racks, full of different things like blankets, lamps and three shiny sleeping bags. He grabbed the red one and turned to me.

"This is the last time, I promise."

I creased my brows as he leaned closer and pressed his lips against mine, pushing me slightly towards the rack behind me, running his hand through my hair, and shifting my head to give him better access. He deepened the kiss and I felt as if my whole body was on fire.

He broke the kiss, pulling back. His lips were swollen and had a slight shade of pink and I so wanted to grab him by the collar of his shirt and kiss him again. So, I did.

"Last time," I murmured, as his lips tugged up and I kissed him with the same intensity he'd kissed me a moment before.
