Side characters don't often get much attention. They're there for the sole purpose of helping the protagonist. Sure, they may get the spotlight for a brief second, but that's not nearly enough time to explain their past, their background, feelings, and emotions. No one ever wants to hear their story, just see the main protagonists story. But that's a given, seeing as how they're not the main character of the story.
