25 - Our day
Jellal and I were all dressed up for the wedding and we were standing in front of the large doors holding hands. I caused so much trouble and I was embarrassed to go in but Jellal reassured me that it would be fine. But what if it wasn't? What if everyone left thinking that the wedding was really cancelled? When I told Jellal of my worries, he told me that they would still be there and if they weren't, that meant more cake for us.
"Our friends will still be there and the people who really matter would too. Do you really think they would abandon us?" Jellal asked. "They have faith in us and our relationship so we should have faith in them."
"You're right. They're our friends and they'll be there for us no matter what," I agreed.
"Yep, so let's go in."
He took a step forward and pulled me with him but I stayed firmly in the same spot, tugging him back. Jellal looked at me questioningly but I was still staring at the big church doors that would open to reveal hundreds of eyes staring at me.
"I think I have stage fright," I whispered.
"Since when have you ever had stage fright?" my fiance asked.
"Since now."
Jellal turned to me seriously. "Let's run in screaming and start dancing."
I looked at him like he was crazy. "Are you serious? That would be so embarrassing."
He just shrugged. "It's our wedding. We can do whatever we want. Drive in on a monster truck, blast heavy metal music from a speaker, spray everyone with a water hose."
"You've gone crazy."
"I've always been crazy – crazy for you," Jellal winked at me.
Forget about a wedding, I think I need a funeral for myself because I just died. He always seemed to make my heart stop with his smooth flirting.
"Let's just go in together with style," I suggested.
"Of course, anything for you, strawberry," my soon-to-be husband replied.
We linked arms. I took in a deep breath. I was nervous, scared, worried. People would probably look at us strangely and I was embarrassed after running away on my wedding day but we have to go through tough times to reach happiness. So after talking about our hard feelings and my insecurities, we've found ourselves at a better place where I'm more sure and stronger.
In front of the big church doors, we were ready to start our wedding. The groom was walking in with the bride. I've never seen that happen before; it was going against tradition but we love to break tradition. Jellal and I are different and that's what I love about us – we can be who we want and do what we want.
"1, 2, 3."
Together, Jellal and I pushed open the wide doors. The large space was revealed and though I've been here many timer to decorate and prepare, it looked different when it was filled with people. The purple streamers gave colour to the white walls in a formal beauty and the bouquets at many points and corners of the room showed off whites, reds and blues. The rows of chairs on both sides seemed to go on forever. Like a wave, the hundreds of heads turned to us – worried, curious, confused expressions staring at us.
"What do we do now?" I whispered to Jellal out the corner of my mouth.
"Haven't you ever had a wedding before? Just walk forward," he replied softly.
I could tell he was joking and I threw him a glare which he saw and he let out a chuckle under his breath. I returned my gaze to the awaiting path in front of me and linked my arm through Jellal's. Together, we walked forward slowly. As if everyone just snapped back to reality, they started smiling and clapping. An awkward start to our wedding but it put a wide smile on my face nonetheless. Like a celebrity, I waved to my best friends who stood at the front of the room in the bridesmaids and groomsmen place and they smiled back.
The priest cleared his throat as we approached. When we stood at the front, Jellal and I faced each other, smiling happily as it was finally happening. The priest started the ceremony with a small speech and then it was time for us to say our vows. We decided to write our own so it was personal since we loved doing things our way.
"Erza, I've known you for many years since we were tiny children. We've gone through a lot of crazy adventures and struggles together but the thing was, we did them together and we survived to see a happy future together," Jellal started talking and I couldn't help but start tearing up at the memories of all our time together.
"You probably know this because I always tell you but I'll tell everyone too. You are my light, my life, my everything. I can't imagine what it'd be like without you. The way you laugh at my jokes, blush at my flirting, smile and comfort me to make me feel better. You love me for all of me – the good and the ugly. You're a strong and independent person who makes me want to be a better person. So let's continue this journey of life together."
Everyone clapped at Jellal's speech and I joined in, my mouth smiling wide from the emotions I was feeling. His words really touched me and made me realise how much more special this day was. But now, it was my turn and I hoped my speech was just as deep and beautiful as his.
"Jellal, nearly my whole life, you've been someone constant that I could always count on. You make me happy and feel good inside. The way you joke with me, flirt with me, help me – I want to spend the rest of my life by your side. When I'm sad, you know what to say to lift up my spirits. Even though we've fought many times and struggled, we know how to overcome them well because life is like a rollercoaster – it's only fun and memorable if there's ups and downs. And when we work together, we work incredibly well together. I want to keep getting to know you better as I have these past years so we can have a better future together. So let's make more memories that we can remember and cherish together, the bad and the good," I finished.
After my short speech, everyone clapped again. Then the priest called for us to kiss and of course, we were more than happy to do so. With everyone watching us, we moved closer together and kissed gently. When we broke apart, we made eye contact and smiled and as everyone erupted into cheers. The wedding ceremony was done and we were finally at a happy place in our relationship where we felt on top of the world and more complete.
But out the corner of my eye, I saw something flickering. Was it a sparkly light or something? I turned towards it and my eyes widened at the sight. A candle that was on the table behind had been knocked over and the flame spread to the curtain behind us. Natsu was standing next to it, jumping around and waving his arms about as he cheered for us, not realising that he had knocked over the candle.
"Natsu!" I screamed instinctively and everyone turned to the fire that I was pointing at.
The flame started travelling upwards and people moved back, scared and unsure or trying to figure out what to do. There were screams everywhere as people made it a bigger deal than it was.
"It's okay, everyone! Stay calm! I got this!" Natsu shouted.
He looked around and then his eyes zoomed in on something in particular. When I followed his gaze, I screamed out in warning, trying to signal to him to not do what he was planning. However, it didn't work as he started heading to his target. I couldn't seem to move – my legs didn't respond. Jellal was going to get the fire extinguisher on the side of the room and no one else was paying attention to Natsu.
"Natsu! Don't you dare!" I yelled, my arm reaching out hopelessly.
Everything went in slow motion. I started moving but it was too late. Natsu had grabbed the large white and pink wedding cake in his hands and threw it in the fire. The lovely cake that I was so excited to eat started to slowly melt until it was fully consumed by the fire. Then Jellal arrived heroically with the fire extinguisher and blasted the flames away with foam. Silence fell on the room as everyone became calm and relieved. I, however, was still in a state of shock. My heart was still pounding fast.
"Erza... I, I can explain," Natsu started backing away from me, his hands held up defensively.
I walked towards him slowly, my glare piercing into him.
"I thought it would help since it was white and had whipped cream so it looked foamy, like the stuff you use to get rid of fires," he explained.
"It's a cake, Natsu, not a fire extinguisher," I said, my hands balled in a fist and trying not to attack him.
"I'm sorry, Erza! I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Don't kill me," he begged, moving away from my scary aura.
"Do you know how expensive that cake was? And how good it tastes? But now it's gone."
Before I could kill him, Jellal stepped between us, his arms stopping us from getting closer to each other.
"Okay, guys, let's calm down. Natsu apologised and he's not so bright so let's forgive him. And he'll even buy you the same wedding cake for tonight," Jellal said.
I looked at Natsu questioningly and he agreed so I let him off the hook. We shook hands – I slightly gripped his hands stronger so he would see that I was serious about my food. After cleaning up the mess, apologising to the guests and taking hundreds of photos, we finished up the traditional wedding ceremony. It was hectic and unexpected but that's what made it so special. It was a wedding that was ours and felt comfortable like normal so I wouldn't have it any other way. Sometimes, a little consistency was what we needed to remember the good times of the past and who we were.
Later that night, we prepared to enjoy the second part of our wedding. In a large dining hall, round tables were spread out and decorated for the guests while space at the front of the room was set up as a dance floor beside a DJ table. Everyone was dressed nicely and seated at their tables. I had changed into a simple dark blue dress and my hair was let down. We could finally relax and eat now that the long official talking ceremony was done. Though it was fun and emotional to be in such a beautiful place in amazing clothes I would only get to wear once in my life, I enjoyed this eating and fun part more.
"Wow, that was fast, Erza," Juvia commented.
I glanced down at my empty plate. The three course meal was completely gone with no food scraps on the plate while others had some leftovers from the large servings or they were still eating.
"I was just really excited for the cake and it was really good," I replied with a shrug.
Earlier today, Natsu went and bought the same wedding cake that he destroyed to replace it. All was forgiven since it tasted as good as it looked. Once others finished their food, some of us moved to the dance area. We relaxed and moved our bodies as upbeat music flooded the room.
"Time for the couples' dance," the DJ shouted.
People pushed Jellal and I towards the middle and we ended up right in front of one another. I blushed and stepped back a little.
"I'm sorry. I'm not good at dancing," I said.
Jellal chuckled. "I know. I've dated you for years, remember? But you're not that bad. Just ignore everyone else here – it's just you and me. This is our day so don't worry about anything and just trust me."
I nodded. Jellal wrapped his arms around me and pulled me in, his warm touch sending me shivers. Our eyes stayed locked on each other's as we started moving gently to the music. There were soft cheers in the background but I only paid attention to Jellal. Other couples came and joined us on the dance floor but it was just Jellal and I in my mind.
"Today was perfect wasn't it?" Jellal asked me.
"Yeah," I replied, looking around the room at my friends all having fun. "It was like the ideal wedding I thought of as a child yet it was totally different. But it was amazing and I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm glad I agreed to marry you, Jellal. I don't regret anything and I don't want to regret anything in life."
"Then let's have a baby."
I gasped. It was so sudden and unexpected but when I stared in his eyes, I could tell he was serious.
"I mean it. Let's do everything we want now. We're going to France for our honeymoon – it's the perfect place for love. After studying through high school and university together, we learnt and grew so much together. So I think we're mature enough to... grow our own thing," Jellal joked.
I laughed. "Grow our own thing? You make it sound like we're growing a tree."
"I was just kidding. But in all seriousness... I want us to raise a kid together and share more great memories with all of us."
"Aren't we too young?"
"Well, we did get engaged and married earlier than normal. Besides, I want to do everything we can while we're young and happy. You never know what might happen in the future so I want to live now and I'm ready for us to to take our next step in life; do more together."
I looked into his reassuring eyes and it was all I needed. "Okay, let's do it."
Jellal smiled and kissed me softly. It was all of my dreams coming true. We had gotten to a strong place where we were both happy with ourselves and each other. And we were ready to spread our feelings to our child. Looking around the room, I realised how amazing today was. My best friends were dancing wildly and having fun. I had made up well with my mother and she was watching from the sidelines as she sipped a glass of champagne. Our other high school and university friends were partying along as they chatted happily with one another.
Sure, today was embarrassing by running away before my wedding and then having a small fire but it was going to become a memory that I could look back on and laugh. It showed the reality of life and the tough problems. Because no matter what happened, I had Jellal with me and my friends. I know now that our love will last till the end.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
So... I'm sorry this was late but at least I updated before the end of the year. I'm just really not feeling this story anymore but I tried. Also, I know nothing about weddings so please forgive me and I haven't been to one in years. Most of this is probably unrealistic but it's a fanfic and I can do what I want. This is basically the last chapter and the next is an epilogue cos I don't know where else this is going and this is the end. I'm sorry if it wasn't as good as you expected but thank you for reading and staying with me!! :)
Also, since I probs won't update till January, Merry Christmas and have a good holiday!! And my birthday was 4 days ago but I don't feel as mature as I should, lol. Have a great day!
