22. Just drive

CHAPTER 22: Just drive

After settling everything in the car’s trunk, I walked over to the driver’s seat and entered in. Dillan came to meet me early in the morning and then went to practice. He seemed really excited to play for the college and ranted about what he was going to do if they won. At least the guy was living his life and not thinking about how to 'destroy' Ryan. Why was he so desperate to do so anyways?

But the worst thing at the moment was that we were running late by three hours already and it was sure that we were ought to get stuck in a heavy traffic at the end of the city, which meant more delay.

And all because of Ryan who ‘forgot’ that he had an appointment with the doctor for his shoulder. He loved to torture me with his stupid ideas.

He was supposed to come back home and then we would be off for the five hours journey. As I didn’t have any car, all thanks to dad, I was to drive Ryan’s car.

The torture.

Everyone knows that guys are very possessive toward their devices and automobiles and it was sure that Ryan fell in the category of those guys as well.
Whenever I used to drive his car, he would give thousands of instructions about what to do and what not to do and someone constantly speaking or yelling while you are driving could be really annoying.

“Back.” Ryan’s voice said from behind me. I turned around and saw his smiling face.
“How was your appointment?” I asked, taking the suspicious paper bag that he was holding.
“I didn’t have an appointment.” he spoke, making me drop the bag on the ground.

He looked at me and said, “Careful, there’s glass bottle in it.” and then bended over to pick the bag up.
“What do you mean you didn’t have any appointment? You said you were going to the clinic for check-up.” I shrieked.
He shrugged his shoulder and spoke, “I may have forgot that the clinic was closed.”
“By seeing your memory loss, it seems like you’ve hurt your head and not your shoulder.” I commented and placed the bag inside the car.

“What is in it anyways?” I asked, pointing the paper bags.
“Ah, nothing much. Just a little snack.”
I groaned and spoke, “Fine.”

He made me to wait for so long to get snacks? Wow!

I turned to him and he was still standing there with a big smile on his face.
“Are you going to get in the car or I have to do that as well?” I said.
“You have to do it.” he chuckled.

“Just get in the car, Ryan.” I stated, getting in the car as well.
“Okay ma’am.” he spoke and sat on the passenger seat.

After we sat, I began to drive the car to our destination. Last night when I was laying in my bed and couldn’t think of a better topic to think about, I began to think about everything that happened with Ryan in a few months and how his behaviour changed. No matter what happened, he still lied to me about the break up. He could have told me the truth and I staying near him still made him feel bad, then I would have backed away myself because it would be good for Ryan but he lied about it.

Throughout the ride, I stayed quiet, while he tried to make up some conversations.

The idea of talking to him felt tempting but yet again, I couldn’t do that. He would feel that he made up everything already so easily. I was trying my best to forgive him because I knew he never had any intentions to hurt me but he pushed me away and there was something I needed to teach him, to keep his dear ones near him during a tough time. Pushing them away won’t help you to solve the situation; it will only make you more miserable because you will have to face every problem alone. And Ryan needed to learn that it won’t hurt anyone if they were near him.

“Why so quiet today, Cupcake?” Ryan spoke softly. Only ten minutes of journey was completed and I was already exhausted by being to quiet. Being quiet wasn’t my thing, seriously!

“Nope, I’m not quiet.” I snorted, my eyes fixed on the road.
“You are you kidding with, Cupcake. I know you too well.” he stated, getting comfortable on his seat.

I titled my head in his direction and narrowed my eyes, “Really?”
“Really.” he spoke confidently.
“What’s my middle name?” I asked.
He looked at him, probably with surprise and spoke,”You are seriously asking me that?”

I looked at him with the narrowed eyes and then dropped the face. That really was an easy question.

“Yeah, too easy huh?” I chuckled lightly.
“Too much.”
“So, what’s my maternal name?” I asked, a little confident that the previous question.
He shook his head and spoke, “Too easy, it’s McLaren.”

I gasped and said,”How do you even know all this?”
“I know everything, Tuna.” his mischievous smile appeared on his face as he pressurized on ‘Tuna’.
“And that idiotic nickname came back.” I sang, keeping my eyes on the road again.

He chuckled but didn’t say anything. We finally entered the area where it was all peacefully and quiet as we were now away from the city. The wide road was silent with nobody on except us. The sides were covered with tall, green trees, enhancing the beauty of the place.

“It’s nice huh?” I spoke, looking outside.
“It is but I have a better to watch.” he stated. I looked at his direction, confused. He sat with his legs on the dash board and his head facing me. He was watching me peacefully with his healthy hand supporting his chin to give him a comfortable position.

As I saw the soft smile on his face, I knew what he meant.

“Too cheesy.” I commented.
“Too beautiful.” he mocked.
I passed him a death glance but he returned the gesture with a childish grin.
“Idiot.” I whispered to myself.
“I know.” he spoke, like he really meant that.

After a while, we kept talking about various things and laughed our way through. My pledge of not talking to Ryan failed, damn.

“This song is qu-“ as I was about to complete my sentence, an unfamiliar voice said from my side of the window.

“Hey cutie, where to?” I looked outside of the window and found a huge truck, a bearded guy was peeking out of the window and he was speaker as well.

I decided to ignore it as getting into trouble wasn’t what I needed at that moment. Plsu, the guy looked creepy as hell.

Stay out of trouble, Jade!

“What did you just say?” Ryan spat, looking out at the guy by leaning to the steering wheel, making me difficult to see the road in front of us.
“Stay at your place, Ryan.” I hissed. He nodded his head and I took a breath of relief that we were out of the trouble he was going to cause but yet again, Ryan wasn’t such an easy human being to understand because when I told him to stay at his place, he jumped off to the back seat and then screamed from the window.

“Mind your own business, dude.”

“Can’t you shut up?” He can kill us, Ryan. Just look at his face,” I paused and then gulped, “and his tattoos.”
“So what? I have a tattoo as well.” he replied.
“Not like his.” I stammered. The truck driver had a full sleeve tattoo with piercing over his lips and ears, making him more and more intimating and dangerous.

The truck driver must have heard me talking about his weird looks because his face seemed to turn red and what he did next was enough for me to scream my lungs out.

He bumped his truck to the car.

“This guy’s crazy!” I screamed, trying to keep the car in control after the little earthquake.
Ryan jumped back to the seat and gripped on the steering wheel, making the car a little more stable.

The car experienced a jerk again and this time, it was more intense.

“What the fuck is your problem?” I screamed, popping my head out of the window.
The driver showed off his coal black smirk and then again began to turn his truck to hit our car again when Ryan shouted, “Get your head inside the car, Jade.”

I followed what he said but before I could ask why he said that, Ryan hit the truck with the car, resulting in the truck to get misbalanced for a moment. Good that Ryan's car was a heavy builded one or it would be torn into pieces.

“Whoa, that was so cool.” I screamed, chuckling. Even with one shoulder dislocated, he drove, or bumped, pretty well.
Ryan joined me as well and spoke, “Are you impressed by me now?”
My smile dropped and I looked at him with surprise, “Can’t you be serious for a second?”

I looked in the direction the truck and it was sure that after what Ryan did, he was sure to destroy our car into pieces.

“I’ll drive.” I stammered, afraid of what would be the next step of the truck driver.

As soon as I got the grip on the steering wheel, I drove with full speed, getting away from the paedophile.

And that was what you call an ‘once in a life time experience’.

_
_

“That was fun huh?” I chirped.
“Why are you so happy about it?” Ryan asked.
“I have never experienced anything like that before, it was exciting for me.” I stated.
“Well, not for my car.” he stated.

True though because his car got major dents on the side where the driver bumped his truck.

“Sorry about that.” I chuckled.
“Wasn’t you fault.” he smiled but then his face felt again as he saw his car and he continued, “My car.”

We stopped to catch a little snack time. There was hardly any shops on the way so bringing food came out to be a good idea. Thank you Ryan, won’t say it out loud to boost up your ego.

“Your first semester is going to end soon, are you scared?” Ryan spoke while we were eating our food in the car.
“What? Why would I be scared?” I asked.
“Because I remember when you were a kid, you said you never wanted to grow up.” he stated, biting his food.
“You remember that?” I smiled.
“I remember everything.”

Hearing that really made me to smile, but then remembered what he did and I couldn’t help but say the thing I wanted to say since I came here.

“Then you must remember that I hate when you push people away.”

His body froze for a second as he heard that. He looked at him with soft eyes and spoke, “I’m sorry.”

“Why do you keep doing that, Ryan? Don’t you know how much that hurts others and you as well?” I asked softly.
“I never meant to hurt you.” he spoke truthfully.
“Then why did you broke up with me? And that too by lying to me about how this? By hiding that you were going through so much?” I snapped out and then continued,”You pretended like you kissed Marley, why?”

“Because she was the only person who really wanted to help. I told her everything and she said she would help me because you helped her through her senior year so she wanted to return the favour.” he explained.

“By helping us break up?” I asked with disbelief.
“It’s not what it seems, Jade. I didn’t do it to hurt you; I didn’t want you to get hurt because of problems which were not even related to you.”
“We used to share everything, Ryan. I shared every problem with you and you helped me figure them out, couldn’t you trust me enough to help you at your dark time as well?” I asked aggressively, I wanted my answer.

“I trust you, Cupcake but I wouldn’t let you go through all this.”

I sighed. I stared at him carefully, I thought to myself, ‘Why was he so difficult to understand?’

And then the journey ahead passed with complete silence.
