Chapter 3
I scream and jump back before realizing that the flames aren't in my part of the tube, they're in Etan's. I gasp as I see him in the middle. He doesn't even seem in pain. His clothes are starting to burn but he seems bored.
After a while all the flames start to get sucked through him. It's like he's feeding on them. In a few seconds the flames are gone and all that's left is him, his clothes have been burned a bit but the skin under them seems fine, and finally, his wings. Yes he has wings. They're so big and majestic, with a purple colored flame in the middle and parts closer to his body, fading into orange and then red at the ends. They're truly beautiful.
"That's what a Phoenix looks like girl. Now it's your turn." I turn to Doc, horrified.
I'm not immune to fire like Etan is. Trust me I've burnt myself more times than I can count. The way Etan just stood there when the flames swallowed him whole... I don't think I can do that.
"Um... Can I not do that? I don't want to get burned," I say slowly. I don't want to die. I'm still young.
Doc frowns and seems to be thinking for a while before he suddenly jumps up from his seat in front of the tube and runs to the back of the room.
Meanwhile I keep stealing glances at Etan's wings. I wish I had powers like that. His wings are absolutely gorgeous. I would like to have wings like that, or to be able to control fire.
Amber and April keep talking in hushed voices, their backs turned to me.
"You ok over there?" I hear Etan say from the other side.
I look at him. "I should be asking you that. You're the one who just swallowed all those flames."
He laughs at me like I just said a joke. "Don't worry. I'm fine. I'm a Phoenix. Phoenixes don't take damage from fire." He smirks and points to his wings as if they're his prized trophy.
I give him a look before shaking my head and turning away. The sound of his laughter carries on.
"Doc said you're my sister and I still don't even know your name." I turn to look at Etan again. He looks like he actually believes Doc.
I sigh. "I'm Evin. Evin Tales."
His eyes widen. "Tales?" I nod slowly, unsure. "I'm Etan Tales." My eyes widen.
What?
Wait a second. "How old are you?" I ask suspiciously.
"I turned 22 last month. You?" My eyes start to tear up. His birthday was last month and he would've turned 22 if he was still alive.
"I turn 20 in a month or so." He seems to notice my eyes tearing up and a look of realization passes in his eyes.
It's him. It's really him!
"Where's Elon?" It's really really him!
"He... disappeared." He frowns but doesn't say anything.
"Mom? Dad?"
"Gone."
His shoulders sag. "Oh"
"They're not dead though!" I say quickly. "At least I don't think they are. I hope they're not." I sigh and drop down on the floor, suddenly feeling tired. Etan does the same on his side, his wings starting to burn dimmer until they're gone completely.
"So you're my "dead" brother."
"So you're my long lost sister."
"I guess."
"Then I guess so too."
I just stare at him until Doc appears out of nowhere again and we both turn our attention to him.
He has two small objects in his hands and as he opens the door to my part of the tube and comes in I see it's a lighter and a candle.
It's not really that easy to find lighters or candles around anymore. When technology grew they just weren't as popular anymore so people stopped using them. The Angels still use them though but they live all the way up in The Sun Walls.
He puts the candle in front of me and uses the lighter to light it. He gets rid of the wall between me and Etan and my brother comes to my side, sitting next to me.
April and Amber come in too. Amber takes her glasses off as she stays back and watches from the door. April comes all the way in and sits on my other side, putting a comforting hand on my back.
"Now all you have to do is to control the flame," Doc instructs me.
"I can't do that." I know I can't. If I could, I would've been able to do that by now.
He scowls at me. "Do it girl. Don't talk." I shut my mouth and stare at the flickering flame of the candle.
"Focus on the flame and try thinking of it as a part of you. It helps," Etan says.
I try doing just that but nothing happens. I focus so hard that I think my brain's going to explode.
Doc sighs, clearly irritated. "That's enough for today," Amber says. "April, show her to one of the empty apartment buildings and let her rest," she says to my best friend. "You need to rest and you will report to me tomorrow morning at 6 sharp. Understood?" I nod, too afraid to open my mouth. "And you... get Doc to get over it and go back to training. You will have to take the tests soon and I want you on the Rostra." Etan nods and we all slowly stand up.
Amber turns to leave but then suddenly remembers something and turns back to us. "You two also need to figure out whether you're siblings or not. Do it tonight. I don't care how much research it takes. I need to know the answer by tomorrow morning. You can take the computer lab to yourselves. If you need help from a Wizard ask Doc." Etan and I nod and she puts her glasses on before leaving.
Sekuum, that woman's too uptight. I mean does she ever even smile? I think not.
"You believe in Sekuum?" I snap my head back to Etan who just asked me that.
"Why do you ask that?" Did I say that before out loud? Did Amber hear it?
"I just heard you thinking it and thought maybe you did believe in him. If so you're stupid." I look at him shocked. April stops in her tracks and turns back to Etan.
"What? You don't believe in him?" She looks at him in disbelief.
"I don't have a reason to."
April turns to look at me in shock. "We don't believe in Sekuum in our family," I tell her.
"But he exists!"
"We don't care."
She gives me a look before turning away. I look at Etan and we both grin from ear to ear like we did when we were kids.
Let me explain.
Sekuum is the so called God of Kosmos. He has been the God everyone worships since he saved our world from darkness. He was the First Light Angel. He's one arrogant son of a gun. Trust me all he cares about is his hair. I kid you not. Everyone knows he exists and many people have seen him. They say he's really powerful.
My family hasn't worshipped him, ever. He's just a name and nothing else. He doesn't move a finger to help Kosmos while he can do it with his eyes closed. He doesn't care. That's why we don't worship him and that's how I know this is my Etan.
We both used to go around in the town all the time and people would ask about our parents and tell us to pray to Sekuum and stupid things like that but we would just say we don't believe in him, grinning like we did now.
I believe if a God wants to be worshipped he has to do something more than just creating us.
After putting my stuff in the block April showed me to I meet Etan in the library.
"You said Elon's missing?" Etan looks at me with a frown on his face.
I nod and tell him all that happened before I came to Consurrexi.
The books here are all glass tablets that are neatly organized on wooden shelves, rare thing to see, because no one cuts trees anymore, but really cool.
"I think now that we've established that we are siblings we need to start looking for the mark you said you saw on Elon's arm." I nod and go to a computer while Etan gives me a pen and a paper and asks me to draw it. Paper... It's been so long since I last saw one.
I draw the T mark with a line passing in the middle for Etan to see, careful not to waste even a bit of the paper or the ink I was given.
Etan looks at it in wonder and then sits behind a computer and starts searching as I do the same.
It's going to be a long night.
