Chapter 24
At the end of the day when the man, whose name I am yet to learn, leaves the room, Adam is bleeding and his skin is filled with fresh wounds. He's breathing heavily and his head is lowered. I'm still in shock but tears run down my face nonetheless. Today I've felt the most physical pain without being touched. The man kept asking me questions but I just couldn't find my voice to answer them, which would lead to him hurting Adam, making me feel the same pain without leaving a single mark on my skin. Still, at the end of the day I wonder, do Werewolves feel this way when their mates are being tortured? Because it's the worst pain in the world.
My eyes stay on Adam through the whole thing, wishing I could stop it. I finally find my voice. "I'm sorry." My voice is small and so low that I think he doesn't hear me when he doesn't respond. His eyes are open, staring at the floor, his face not showing any emotion.
"I'm so sorry." This time I say it louder. I know he hears me but he doesn't respond. I make a promise to myself that if this thing ever repeats I'm going to answer every single question so Adam won't get hurt.
"It's all your fault," Adam whispers from beside me.
I snap my head to the chair beside me, frowning. "What?"
"I was tortured because of you."
I scowl at him. "Well, if I wasn't here, they wouldn't have bothered torturing you, they would've just killed you."
"If you weren't here I wouldn't have been in this situation in this situation in the first place. I have to go through all this pain because they want you to talk."
I narrow my eyes at him. "You're forgetting that even though I don't have the cuts and bruises on my skin I still feel every bit of it. It's not my fault they decided to use you to get to me!"
"If you hadn't decided to come to Mora, none of this would've happened. I wouldn't have had to go through all this trouble for you."
"Well excuse me for trying to find the only people I have left in this world!"
"At least you have someone left!"
I fall silent. He's a Fallen. His wings were burnt off just because he was different and he was thrown out of the country for Enon to catch and bring to Dark and torture him for the rest of his immortal life. I forgot how lonely Fallens are. When they fall there's no one to help them get back up.
I look at the floor in front of me, wishing this nightmare would end.
The next morning I wake up to the sound of the door slamming. The night before I kept waking up when I felt the electric shocks run through my body. It wasn't as painful as before but it still wasn't ignorable. I think I just slept half an hour the whole night. I'm sure I have dark bags under my bloodshot eyes.
I force my heavy eyelids open and stare at the evil man in front of me.
"Rise and shine children! It's a beautiful day to continue the torture." He smirks as he walks towards the table with the torture instruments.
I try taking deep breaths to calm myself but it doesn't work, the air gets stuck in my throat.
"Let's start simple shall we?" The evil man says before taking a sharp knife and walking towards me.
I look at him with wide eyes, full of fear. Adam's head is still bowed down in submission. He doesn't look up as the man passes him and walks up to me.
"Are you ready?" He raises an eyebrow at me in a mocking manner. I glare at him while my eyes brim with tears. "Let's try this again then. Who are you, beautiful?" He tilts his head to the side, waiting for me to respond. I cringe at the nickname.
I try to find my voice but it seems to be completely gone so I just open and close my mouth a few times like a fish out of water.
The man tsks and straightens from his crouching position in front of me, walking towards Adam. As soon as he brings the knife close to his skin I panic and finally find my voice.
"No! Stop!" He stops the knife inches away from Adam's skin and turns towards me expectantly. I hear Adam take a deep breath and gulp.
"Did you say something, sweetheart?" The man raises an eyebrow at me and I look at him in defeat.
I take a deep breath before responding. "I'll talk. Just don't hurt him."
A smirk grows on the evil man's face as he walks over and crouches in front of me again, knife still in hand. If my legs were free I would kick him where the sun doesn't shine. Instead I settle for glaring at him.
"Ok. Who are you then, sweetheart?" I can see the victory in his eyes.
I gulp, knowing I've been defeated as I turn to look at Adam for a brief second, head bowed and eyes closed as if expecting me to throw him under the bus. I have no other choice. I promised myself not to let Adam get hurt again and I'm not about to break that promise. "My name is Evin. Evin Tales."
Our torturer's eyebrows shoot up above his hairline. His smirk grows. "A Tales? Boy, are you guys stubborn. Your parents most of all." I wince at the mention of my parents. "If we catch," he shakes his head, correcting himself. "When we catch them, I would be happy to let them know I tortured their daughter as I watch the life draining from their eyes."
I frown. Don't they already have Mom and Dad?
"I can see the confusion in your eyes. You know nothing, don't you?"
I scowl at him, pursing my lips. He's just trying to get under your skin Evin, don't listen to him.
He grins at the conflict inside my head. "So you're that clueless, huh?" If looks could kill, he would be in Dark, being tortured by Enon, brother of Sekuum, ruler of Dark – the underworld.
"Fine then, I guess I'll tell you." He grins. "We didn't know you existed until a few years ago when we heard that the great Tales family had up and left, fled the country! We tried, but we couldn't catch them. Then we looked around more and found a certain Etan." I gulp. They found him first. "We observed him from afar and noticed that he was obviously a Tales. That's when the doubt came that there were more." I grit my teeth as I listen to him continue. "A few months later we found your little brother, what is his name? Oh right, Elon." I'm full on glaring at him right now. "He's so gullible. It was pretty easy to get a witch to bind him to the god of Time. Almost too easy." My eyes fill with tears. It's my fault. I was careless. I should've paid more attention to him. I should've been there.
"We weren't expecting a third one but we finally find you too, after a while. At first we didn't see how you could be connected to the Tales family, you're so different from them. Being in that family means developing your powers earlier than anyone else, at a very young age." I gape at him. I never saw Elon developing his powers. Etan was 'killed' when we were very young so I don't really remember much. But Elon? He never had any powers.
The blond sees my unbelieving gaze and smirks. "Yes, even your little brother developed his powers before you. He never told you because you never showed any sign of being anything but a pathetic Human. Still, you can't use your magic without actual magical aid, can you?" He tilts his head to the side mockingly. I grip the edge of the armrests tightly.
"Anyway, we followed you for a while and you made our work much easier; you lead us right into the heart of the Resistance. If it wasn't for you, my dear, we would've never known where it was situated and attacked Consurrexi. We were careful, of course, that you wouldn't get hurt, much." My mouth becomes dry. I was the reason so many people lost their lives. "Don't worry, the Resistance already knows it was your fault and thinks you are a spy, which you will be." He smiles. "Well it's either that or..." He looks at Adam with a smirk. "When you go back, you will make them believe that you had nothing to do with all of this and when they let you back into the Resistance, you will report to us every day if you want this little guy to remain safe. Let me remind you that you will feel the pain. The Witch made sure of that."
I look up at him with a mixture of shock and hatred. Do they have Elon then? No, they can't.
"Oh and one other reason why we caught you was to draw your parents out but that obviously didn't work." He grabs my chin in his hand and brings my gaze to his. "They don't care about you, sweetheart. You are a powerless pathetic Human after all." I shake my head as the tears in my eyes start to drop.
No, that can't be true. My parents were captured by the Nex. They hadn't left Elon and I alone. They were captured, taken away against their will. They still care about us... me.
"Oh and knowing Mary and Edward, they have already found your little brother and are looking for a way to get Etan away from all of this without having to encounter you. Too bad Etan is under influence." He shrugs nonchalantly as he puts the knife back on the table before walking to the door.
"I would lose hope if I were you." With a last smirk in my direction, he walks out, locking the door behind him.
The tears keep falling long before he has left. I sob quietly, trying not to let Adam notice. He does though. He just stares at me for a long time as if remembering his own fall, a haunting look evident in his eyes.
I feel the fire inside me ignite and burn brighter the more he stares. I need to break free. It's like I have all the hatred in the world bottled up inside me and I need to break free. I need to burn everything to the ground.
It takes a while before the shackles around my wrists turn into a bright red color and start to melt, around my wrists. It doesn't bother me though. I push aside the pain and focus on how good the fire feels. I focus on that, trying to forget everything that's hurting me. It doesn't work, obviously, and I try harder. The fire finally burns the shackles off my wrists and I put my hands up on the one around my neck. I snap it off as it starts burning and bend down to do the same to the ones around my ankles.
When I'm finally free I turn to Adam with a new found energy and find him looking at me with an equally shocked and sad look. I ignore it and walk over to him, melting off the shackles binding him the electric chair. He struggles to stand up and I put an arm around him to help him. When I look at him now all I see is a broken man that has lost everything because of something he can't even control.
I think back to what the blond man said about my parents and tears escape my eyes. As more tears fall I feel two arms circle around me weakly and embrace me in a warm hug. I relax as soon as I come back to the present and notice it's Adam. I put both my arms around his waist and bury my face in his chest as more tears fall. I actually feel the comfort as I hold him close, afraid to let go. I just lost everything in a time span of 10 minutes max. I lost everything. I have lost everything. I let myself go and cry harder into Adam's chest. His arms, although weak, never leave my waist.
We stand there for a few minutes before I finally pull away and dry off my tears with my hands. I look up at him. Adam's arms don't fall from around my waist as he looks back at me with a sad look in his dark blue eyes.
I pull myself out of his arms, with a lot of effort, and walk to the door. I close my eyes and focus on my powers as Adam stumbles over to me. I melt anything metal that keeps the keeps the door locked and push open the door. I wrap an arm around Adam's waist and help him slowly walk out with me. I protect him from any guard that steps towards us, trying to capture us. After a few turns my vision goes black as my powers fully kick in. I no longer have any control over them.
Phew! That was... something. Idk. It was tough to write this after a long period of writer's block but here it is, nonetheless!
