Chapter 16

The next day we all set off on an empty stomach. It's like every single creature in the woods has disappeared. To make it even worse, it starts raining around midday.

The rain gets so strong that it almost cuts off my limbs. Still, we keep walking.

I need to tell them. They need to know.

The rain continues until the next morning, getting weaker throughout the day before resuming with its original strength. I even feel like I'm catching a col but I continue nonetheless.

"Evin," Adam calls out but I don't pay him any attention.

I walk faster as the rain grows stronger. I can feel my clothes sticking to my body like a second skin. I most probably have a fever and every step I take hurts but I can't let that stop me.

"They need to know. I need to tell them. I need to get to them as fast as possible." My rant is a mere whisper, lost in the wind but somehow Adam hears it.

"Who? Who needs to know what Evin?" Adam asks from behind where he and Ven have been following me for hours now. Ven's fur is sticking to his body, showing how slim he really is and Adam is drenched. We've all had better days.

"The Resistance. They need to know," I whisper too lowly for him to hear.

I can feel his eyes glaring into my back before he yanks my arm back so I'm facing him. Maybe he did hear.

"What do they need to know?" His voice is so desperate to know the answer that for a moment I believe he's part of the Resistance and throw caution to the wind.

And so I dig myself an even deeper hole. "That there's a Fallen and a Demon in the Nex. That probably the whole Nex is made of Supernaturals except Scott Ercer, which everyone knows is Human. They need to know what they're going up against." My voice cracks at the end as fatigue washes over me. I feel the rain hitting my body and it stings a lot. If Adam's hand wasn't holding my arm I probably would collapse to the ground.

His eyes darken and he tilts his head to the side. "So you're part of the Resistance." It's more of a fact than a question.

I straighten up and narrow my eyes at him. "Aren't you?" He flinches away from as if I've burned him, dropping my arm, making me stumble to regain balance.

"No." His tone is as sharp as a knife and it makes me wince.

I just told a person working with the Nex what I was planning to do. I told him about the Resistance. If I don't manage to lose him, I would definitely lead him right to them. This isn't good.

I expect him to pull out a weapon out of nowhere and attack me but thankfully that doesn't happen. "In fact, I'm part of the Nex myself. One of the people you fear the most," he says proudly. I frown.

I don't fear the Nex, I just despise them! Ok. Maybe I do fear them a little. Or a lot.

I take a few steps away from him while he stands tall. Ironically lightning strikes behind him making him look even scarier. Even Ven is retreating while hissing.

"What are you?"

His lips tilt up in a smirk. "I don't think you'd want to know Little One."

I scowl at him. Did he just call me little?

"I wouldn't have asked if I didn't want to know." I narrow my eyes at him.

He ignores me. "All you need to know is that you will lose. The Resistance will bow down to us when we reveal ourselves to the public." He takes a step towards me while I take one backward.

I think by us he meant the Supernaturals that are in the Nex. We've only ever had the chance to meet the Human of the group. Now, when we're at our weakest point, they will who themselves as an attempt to get us to submit to greater power. I must admit it's clever.

"And whoever dares to disobey us," my back hits a tree behind me. "Will die." He pauses to think for a moment then shrugs nonchalantly, his lips tilting up in a smirk. "Or worse."

I look up at him with a scowl. No matter how much I fear him I won't back down. I have my powers, at least half of them.

Adam glares at me a bit more before turning and walking away, while I stand there, glaring at his back.

Ven stays, looking up at me to see what I will do. I don't move and watch as Adam's back gets further away. Everyone knows you never turn your back on your enemy. He must either be stupid or he doesn't fear me. In both cases, he's a fool.
