Life's More Fun When You're a Klepto
When I heard the alarm sounding I did my best to run as fast as I could, but to my luck, I ran straight into a mall cop.
"I know what this looks like, I was running because..." I looked around for an excuse, the man glaring holes through my skull with a disbelieving look. I saw a boy looking at the scene that was playing out outside the H&M, he was smirking as our eyes met. Then I got an idea. I pointed at him, causing the cop to look in his direction. "I was running because I saw my friend! We haven't seen each other in months, and I was just SO excited!" I plead, putting on an innocent face. I had been talking loud enough so that the boy would hear me and play along. He strode over to us, obviously taking his sweet time. When he reached us, the officer looked him up and down before speaking.
"Young man do you know this girl?" He asked skeptically. The boy put on a very fake smile but it seemed to convince the guy.
"Yes sir, she's one of my very best friends, we haven't seen each other in so long. I'm very sorry for the confusion." He said, his words almost melodic, charming. Now's the time where people would question the validity of our relationship, asking questions like 'Oh really, what's her name?', but the officer let go of me and just walked off, mumbling a quick sorry. "Well, that was fun, we should do that again sometime." He remarked, sarcasm filling his words like it was his natural tone, it was so different than the one he used just seconds ago.
"Yeah, really..." I said, my tone matching his. He smirked, just as he had before, but this one was more genuine it seemed, it was almost comforting, which is weird because when is a smirk comforting? I shook my thoughts away, and focused back on the conversation.
"Broke or a klepto?" He asked, sharply.
"Both?" he laughed.
"I see, and do you have a name? I mean I guess I should know it since we've been best friends forever." Man, this guy really liked sarcasm.
"Dottie," I stuck my hand out, "Dottie Heller." He took my hand in his giving it a firm shake.
"Dottie, interesting... I'm Damien, Damien Blake." He said, mimicking my words. He let his hand linger on mine for a couple seconds, as we stood in silence. He finally pulled it away, taking a step back, but I strangely wanted his hand back on mine. Ugh, I sound like a girl in a teen romance movie. "Well, Dottie, I do hope to see you again." He nodded before walking off. Weirdo.
I walked upstairs and into the foodcourt to find my best friend, Celia, in line at Häagen Dazs. I came up behind her and tapped her on the shoulder making her jump and turn around.
"DOTTIE!" She shrieked, hitting my arm lightly. "How may times do I have to tell you to mcfreaking stop doing that!?"
"I dunno, like 400 times maybe?" I shrugged. She just scoffed and looked down at my bag, seeing I had my bigger purse with me.
"Was that you who set off those alarms?"
"Maybe..."
"Dottie, you're going to get caught someday... Did you get me anything?" She looked at me with wide eyes.
"Funny story actually, and yes, I got you some jewelry." She clapped.
"But wait, what's a funny story?"
"I lowkey did get caught, but this guy helped me get out of it, he was weird, but he was super hot. I think he's new, I've never seen him around."
"He has to be, you know every hot guy in this town, like KNOW them." She wiggled her eyebrows at me, and I rolled my eyes at her.
"Shut up." I grumbled.
"Whatever, tell me everything!"
Once she got her ice cream and we found a table in the crowded Friday night foodcourt crowd, and I spilled the whole thing, leaving out some of my more personal thoughts on Damien, if I told her I wouldn't hear the end of it. She was pondering over the details, pausing for a while before she spoke up.
"I don't know Dot, he sounds kinda sociopathic." I scoffed. "I'm serious, you remember in forensics they talked about how sociopaths are weirdly charming, but their personality changes like every three seconds. I mean, how did he just get that cop to just leave you alone?"
"I don't know Celia, maybe he's a wizard! I can see it now! "You're a Wizard Damien!"" I remarked.
"So, I'm a wizard now?" A voice interjected into the conversation, scaring the both of us. We turned to see Damien leaning against a trashcan, looking down at us. This time I really took in his whole appearance. His black jeans and maroon sweater with a collared shirt sticking out the top made his dark grey eyes feel like they were piercing into my entire being. And I loved it. He walked over to Celia and took her hand, placing a single kiss on her knuckles, making her blush like a tomato. "Hello, I'm Damien." He smiled.
"I-I'm Celia." She stuttered, earning a smile from him. I stared as they talked, just watching him, watching his lips move so eloquently. I snapped out of it when I tasted blood. I brought my hand up to my lips, finding my fingers bloodied upon pulling them away. I must've been biting my lip harder than I thought. And before I even noticed Damien had moved, I felt his thumb brush my lip, wiping some blood off. I looked up to find him staring into my eyes.
"It seems you are bleeding." He smirked, knowing he was responsible. He winked at me, unknowingly to Celia, and stood up from his crouched position in front of me. "I must be going now. Goodnight ladies." He said before walking off, but not before he sent me another enticing smirk.
