Chapter twenty
Reba was in much better spirits after their little conversation outside. Actually wanting to start counseling to solve their issues before the baby arrived...possibly even marriage, which had Narvel very excited!
Finally convincing Narvel to let her out of bed again, Reba got herself situated on a stool at the kitchen counter to help with dinner. "Can you grad the salt for me?" Reba asked as Narvel carefully observed her every move. "Yea, I gotcha," he walked over to the table and picked up the salt shaker, handing it to her, and standing back beside her to watch.
"I won't fall apart, Narvel," she huffed,"let me up for a few minutes."
"Five minutes," he replied sternly,"and don't go running off." Reba gave him a salute and kissed his cheek. "You have my word."
Narvel smacked her butt as he walked into the living room, peaking around the corner to make sure that she was steady on her feet enough to be alone, "I can feel you watching me ,you know," Reba called out, not looking up from the food that she was preparing. "Just checking," Narvel said as he finally took a seat on the couch.
Reba glided around the kitchen, so happy to be doing something productive for her little family, all the while writing baby names as she cooked. "Narvel? What do you think about the name Jess for a boy?" She asked into the living room.
Narvel strolled in over to her and looked down at her list, "I mean, is it after someone or do you just like the name?" He asked. "Well, do you want to name him after someone? I just like the name," she answered, shrugging her shoulders. Narvel wrapped his arms around her growing waist and kissed her nose "Not unless you want to, but I think he needs a very strong name,Jess is cute, but it doesn't seem like a name for a super hero or something," Narvel replied, "So you want our baby to be a super hero?" She smiled ",and who said they're a boy?"
"Father's intuition goes a long way,"causing Reba to scoff. "I'm sure that it is very accurate Mr. Know-it-all," she poked his stomach. "And don't think about poking me because they think it's a game and kick the hell out of my insides," she pointed her finger at him. Narvel just three his head back and laughed, "oh I love you Red," kissing the top of her head. "Now, you either have to go lay on the couch or in the bed, because you have been up way longer than five minutes," Narvel ordered. Pouting, Reba nodded her head and shuffled towards the living room to watch TV.
She plopped down on the couch and put her feet up on the arms as she laid sideways across it. She placed her hand atop her stomach and had just gotten completely comfortable when she heard a loud clang from the kitchen, followed by a few choice words from Narvel.
"Narvel!" She hopped up as quick as she could but got dizzy by the time she made it to the doorway and had to grab the door frame for a second to keep from passing out. He looked up at her and went towards her while holding his own hand. "Reba! What are you doing?" I just looked at him like he was dumb-and in that moment-he was. "What are YOU doing?" He sighed, "I ruined dinner! I burnt myself on the pan and then I flipped out and now our food's all over the floor!" He looked down, defeated.
"Baby, are you alright? Let me see it," she reached for both of his hands, wanting to inspect his injury as the food just didn't matter right now. Narvel held his right hand up to show her, it wasn't bad, but it could stand a bit of cold water and frozen peas.
"You run this under the sink, I'll grab the peas out of the freezer ," maternal instincts kicking in as she jumped into action. "I'm fine." He insisted. She rolled her eyes, "Uh-huh. Well then still, for me, please hold these on your hand for a moment?" She asked him, handing over the peas.
Sighing, he grabbed the peas and winced as the cold touched his burnt skin. "I'll find something else for dinner, you go hold that in there," pointing him in the direction of the living room. "But-"
"No buts. Go."
Huffing and guild ridden, Narvel stomped into the living room, knowing that here was no use in fighting with his pregnant girlfriend. She carefully leaned down to take care of the mess on the floor then went over to the fridge to look at what else they had.
And of course, there was nothing. Ramen noodles it was; seeing if they had any kind of spices to make it different and less boring. She finally shut the fridge and stood up straight, thinking. "Narvel?" She called as she poked her head in the living room entryway. "Yeah?"
"What would you say the chances are of us going out to eat? There's not much here.."
"Red, you aren't even supposed to be out of bed, remember? You are not going anywhere anytime soon. I can call in something, but we'll have to look for some loose change laying around, I spent the last of my paycheck on the meatloaf," Narvel replied. She sighed. "I guess you're right. I could call mama..? Maybe she'd bring us somethin for tonight.." He took a deep breath. "Is there really nothing in there??" He was growing irritated now, not necessarily with her but that's where he was directing it now. "No, just milk and ramen noodles," Reba replied, "unless you plan on eating the food on the floor," she stated, sassing back at him. He stood up. "Okay there's more in there than that, quit being lazy." Her cheeks turned another shade of red.
"Oh fuck you!" She snapped, he knew she was mad now; she did NOT like that word and never used it. He sighed then tried to reverse what he'd just done. "Look, I'm so-"
"No. Stop. Just stop." Holding up her hand.
"Baby," Narvel sighed, but she was not having it. "No, Narvel, ya know why don't you just find something you think is suitable," Reba walked past him and into the bedroom, feeling a little faint. He went after her. "Reba, wait, I'm sorry. Okay I'm just a little stressed.. I shouldn't have took it out on you.. I'm sorry..are you okay?"
"I'm just fine, just let me be," Reba eased herself down on the bed. "I just got too upset," rubbing her belly and tilting her head back, trying to calm down. He looked down at his feet like a child, then looked back up. "I'm sorry..." She sighed and rubbed her eyes. "Narvel, please?" Really wanting to be alone at that moment. "Go find something to eat," waving him off. He took a deep breath then did as he was told, of course now he wasn't that hungry. He felt bad, but she wasn't in the mood for an apology.
Worrying, he knew that she was hungry and exhausted herself with the arguing and being on her feet.
Narvel heard her close the bathroom door, probably going to take a bath to relax. Yet, he still worried about her getting sick or passing out and he couldn't get to her. So he walked over to their bathroom door and called out to her, "Reba..are you alright..?"
"No," she replied, immediately making him panic. He jiggled the handle on the door but she had locked it. "Open the door!"
"I want to be alone," Reba said, "go away, please." He continued to knock. "Reba if something is wrong you need to tell me!" Finally, the lock clicked and he was able to open the bathroom. Bursting through, Narvel took her face into his hands and looked her dead in the eye, "Reba, what's going on?" She just stared at the floor.
"Please," whispering to her as he ran his nose across her cheek, "I want to help you, that's all." She sighed and took in a shaky breath before speaking, "I just feel sick, tired. I think I really over did it today. The cramps are starting too." He pulled her close and rubbed her back. "Well, honey if you're feeling like this why wouldn't you want me to comfort you?"
"I don't want you to worry or feel bad about the food and making me upset," leaning her head on his shoulder. He looked down and pulled them apart-just enough for eye contact. "I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry. I had no right to say what I did. You should feel like I'm here for you, and I'm just making you feel like trash."
Reaching up to kiss him, her belly got in the way and their little one started kicking. She flinched and took his hand in hers and placed them on her stomach. "Do you feel that?"
"Yea," he laughed, "I feel it."
Narvel got on his knees and rested his forehead against her stomach. "I love you both, so much." giving their baby a gentle kiss. Reba ran her hands through his hair and slowly felt the stress wash away. "Take a bath with me, I want to be close to you," she helped him to his feet. "You sure you're comfortable with that?" She smiled shyly, "Well I asked didn't I?" Chuckling, he nodded. "That you did."
"Then I'm definitely comfortable with it."
"After this you are going straight to bed, got it? I'll call your mama to bring us something later," he said. "Oh yeah! Aren't you hungry! Oh I'm so sorry, I forgot!" She turned to go to the kitchen.
Narvel gently grabbed her shoulder and spun her around. "Oh no you don't, let me take care of you now." Turning on the bath water.
"But honey, you're hungry."
He shook his head, "I'll live, come on-you just relax." Reba began to undress and stepped into the bathtub, carefully sitting down. Narvel soon followed after and sat behind her.
"God, I'll go to sleep like this," she giggled. "Uh huh, I hope not." He said coyly. She slightly turned and smacked his arm, still giggling. "Na, I'm just joking, you get comfortable and go to sleep if you'd like. I'll wake you up when it's time to get out," he kissed the back of her head and rubbed her shoulders. "No problem there." She laughed a little, then closed her eyes. A few moments later she drifted off to sleep. He waited with her there and let her rest for as long as he could till finally the water started to get cold.
"Hey, red wake up," he whispered in her ear, kissing her just below her ear. "Huh...what is it..." She still wasn't really awake. "Come on, red, the water's getting cold."
"How long was I out for?" She asked, stretching with a yawn. "Oh not long."
"You're going to have to get out first and help me up," she replied, currently calculating how soon it could be before she got to go back to sleep. "I am, I am" He slowly stood up, dried off then helped her do the same. Reba winced and grabbed her back, "That probably wasn't the best idea ever."
"What hurts?" Narvel asked, as they made their way to their bedroom. "My back, it's pretty bad," easing down onto the mattress. "Oh I'm sorry, lay down." He got her to the bed then turned to go to the door. "You need anything-I'm grabbing some water?"
"I think we're out of my pain medicine, it's only one I could take as much as I needed and it wouldn't hurt the baby," Reba replied. He mentally kicked himself for forgetting to get more yesterday. "Yeah, you're right. My fault. Um...the heating pad?"
"Yea, can I be lazy and ask you to shove it under my back instead of me having to move again?" She pouted, she was pitiful yet still so cute and innocent. He slightly laughed. "Of course let me go get it and warm it up! Be right back!" She smiled, she really was blessed when it came to him. He was willing to do literally anything for her. He finally came back with the heating pad and she was so wrapped up in her thoughts that she never noticed when he did.
He noticed her dazed smile so he sat down beside her then spoke, "Reba?" She flinched, obviously now out of her daydream. "Yeah?"
"You okay?" She nodded. "Yeah, just think in'" He gently lifted her up and placed the heating pad underneath her. "About what?" He laid down beside her and she rested her head on his shoulder. "About you, how your so good to me."
"Well, I kinda got us into this situation with the baby and all, plus you're doing all the hard work, so I guess I ought to treat you like a queen," he shrugged. She stopped and propped herself up on her elbow enough to look at him. "Is that what you've thought this whole time? That this is all your fault?? Narvel-yes you planned that date-but I still went and I was fully ready and willing when what happened happened. I'm just as much at fault as you. Don't ever think that this is all on you, please don't ever think that."
Reba was surprised when she saw tears welling up in his eyes. "Oh baby, I love you," kissing her all over her face. "I do not think of this as a mistake, but if things would have been different I would have liked to waited until we were in our twenties to have a baby, but I do not regret this," placing his hand over her stomach. "I know we both are to blame, but most of this was on me."
She smiled up at him and said flatly yet sweetly. "Aww honey, I love you too. But that last parts bull. It takes two to tango." He laughed a little. "You know what I mean." She nodded. "Perhaps, but that doesn't matter. What matters is what came out of it. And the fact that I am madly in love with you." She giggled. "Well I can definitely guarantee you that I am just as in love with you too."
