. sniper .

A week after I had finally decided to return to work, I received intel that Irene was found dead in an alleyway, leading me to a dead end. I decided to return to the library every day to find Dream again but she failed to appear whatsoever. The odd thing was that Danger had disappeared as well. I did not spot any of the members for a full two weeks. I tried calling Dream and asking her what was wrong, my heart yearning to hear her voice again. And yet, that too, was a failure.
"Taehyung, I want you to stay here, alright? It's dangerous outside," the girl whispered, helping to straighten out the boy's shirt, patting the wrinkles down using her palms. She smiled, cupping his cheeks and placing a small peck on his lips as reassurance.
The boy wasn't buying any of it, pouting and hugging her tightly, his nose burying into her neck, "You're not going anywhere," he huffed, his child-like side shining through as his heart plummeted, "I killed Irene. I will surrender. You all shouldn't need to worry because of me. I don't want to be stuck here."
Ever since Taehyung had killed Irene, the group had found it hard to keep the news a secret, dumping the body behind an alleyway and escaping from the house, leaving the quiet residence behind and moving into a pretty well-known hotel in the city, hoping that Enigma would not take the risk of assassinating them in full view of civilians and patrolling policeman. Still, they were experts at the game and not to be underestimated. All operations of the group had to be halted temporarily, all going into hiding at separate rooms of the building in the chance of a combined attack.
"Taehyung, please understand. I can't let you go out there on your own. We're a team. We fight for each other. I'll try to talk to D.O." she smiled slightly, hugging him back and inhaling the slight musky scent he held. It was comforting, their little talks like these, reassuring each other silently with both their actions and words.
They pulled away slowly after the little session of exchanging their thoughts, gazes shining brightly as they examined each other faces, cheesy smiles hanging on their faces. At times like these, Dream wished they were nothing but ordinary teenagers. Not fighting for their lives, not hunting down others, not having to worry, not broken. At times like these, she just wanted to be normal. She didn't want to care about anything around her. At times like these, she wished she was selfish enough to leave everything behind. And yet, the thought was dismissed once again, blown into the trivial winds and dismissed as yet another dying thought.
Dream's gaze wandered from Taehyung's eyes to his lips, the sudden urge to kiss him right there and then taking over her as she leaned forwards just a little. Taehyung was more than happy to comply, smiling as he began to close his eyes in satisfaction.
The moment was shattered, however,
when Dream noticed a red dot hovering over the spot which held his heart.
"Get down!" the girl yelled, pushing the boy in front of her harshly. Taehyung toppled backwards, crashing against the floor as a silent whizzing sound made its way into the room, a neat hole forming in the large glass windows, cracks barely visible at its sides. A loud gasp escaped the boy's lips as he shielded himself behind a couch, propping himself up with his elbows as Dream herself kneel-led on the floor and rolled behind a wall, chest heaving up and down as her heart began to race erratically. They've found us.
"Damn it," Taeyong swore to himself on the roof of the opposite building, the wind swirling his hair into messy beach waves on his head, slightly blocking his vision as some baby strands escaped from the dull blue bandana with white markings. He cocked the gun back, refilling it with bullets as he re-steadied himself, trying to get back his aim. The winds today were not in his favour and he had missed a shot at one of his targets. D.O. would not be pleased. Getting his rhythm back, the boy refocused, eyes straining to catch sight of his target.
What he did not expect was the glass windows wide open.
And the sight of another sniper aiming their gun at him.
"Shit!" he swore once again, dodging the bullet right as it shot through his own gun, the metal device shattering into pieces on the ground. Ever since they cut the deal off with Kai, Enigma had not been able to get good weapons and Danger was still quite in the lead with their advanced weaponry. Taeyong swore our loud again, blaming D.O. as he scrambled for cover, more bullets following the first and cracking the stony wall above him, the little pebbles hitting him harshly on his back. The boy groaned in discomfort, hands moving to shield his head as his eyes closed in agony.
Taehyung was out of control by now, his only aim to blast the other sniper's head off. Dream was nowhere to be found, running out of the room to warn the others in case D.O. decided to come storming into the hotel himself. Adrenaline pumped through his veins, his competitiveness getting the better of him as bullet after bullet blasted through the man-killing device he held, eyes trained on his target. Taehyung's gaze was sharp, making out the little tuft of hair. All he needed was one good clean shot. Taeyong would have to get up soon to try to make a run for it. He'd get him right there and then.
Meanwhile, the other boy was losing patience, shouting out profanities as his fingers dug on the cement flooring, eyes red with anger. I need to escape from this. His earpiece beeped, the sound of the man who held more authority than anyone he knew coming into view.
"Taeyong? Are you alright, boy? What's wrong?"
D.O. Although Taeyong didn't want to admit it, he owed the man a lot. D.O. was merciless and ruthless and yet he held a soft spot for those close to him and saved Taeyong from several life-threatening situations. In a way, that man was his saviour. Right now, D.O. sounded extremely worried, his voice cracking a little, betraying his emotions. Taeyong knew that the man treated him like his own brother and his heart cracked a little at the raw emotion that he could hold, the sadness and innocence that once lived in him.
"Everything's fine," the sniper replied, tears threatening to fall from his eyes as he gritted his teeth, the escape to the staircase right in front of him, the blackness of the entryway so captivating, luring him in. It's so close.
Suddenly, the rain of bullets stopped, the air stilling as the dust above him flew around him in clouds, contaminating his vision. A thought of Taehyung running out of bullets and having to reload crossed his mind, a glimmer of hope appearing. Then, another appeared. Could Taehyung be messing with him? Pretending to run out of bullets.
"Why is it so quiet there?" D.O.'s voice appeared again, static coming through.
Wait, static?
Somebody's hacking the frequency.
Taeyong's forehead creased as he re-evaluated his decisions quickly. With one swift movement, he harshly grabbed the earpiece off and threw it aside before running towards the entryway, his feet moving at a ridiculously fast pace. Right when he was about to reach the handle, a zoom sounded in the air and his eyes widened as the bullet made its way through his head, coming out the other end. Taeyong's body crumpled towards the floor, a pool of blood starting to form. His eyes were wide open, head touching the door of the entryway.
So close, yet so far.
"Taeyong? Tae? Please don't do this T-" D.O.'s voice faded into the background as Namjoon successfully managed to hack into the system, pumping his fists into the air in victory.
"Yes! I finally got into their system!" he exhaled a breath of relief, "This should stop them from communicating for a while unti-"
"What have you done?!"
The shriek sounded through the whole building, rattling everyone's bones. It sounded absolutely devastated, shrill and high-pitched and so loud. The noise carried through the hallway as sobs echoed through the rooms. With hurried steps, Yoongi, Namjoon, Jimin and Jungkook ran towards the source of the wails, their eyes widened with worry and nervousness, hands trembling.
The sight before them in Dream's room consisted of Dream herself kneeling on the floor with her face in her hands, silent tears dropping towards the floor, glittering under the sunlight. Beside her was Taehyung, who looked extremely guilty, hair in a disarray as he stared at her blankly, not knowing what to say.
"T-Taehyung," she managed to mutter out, lifting her head to meet the four men at the doorway, voice cracking a little but still hiding a fueling anger, "just killed Enigma's sniper."
