Chapter Five
The Best of Smallville

'Done staring Metropolis?'
Jayden walked through the fortress halls, looking at the many objects her father had hidden from criminals and villains. Her fingers brushed against the icy walls. Yet her hands weren't cold. Come to think of it, she didn't feel the cold at all. She took a deep breath and let it out. No cold air in sight. This wasn't right.
"Dad! Mom!" Jayden called out, turning around from the path she was walking down. "You are a danger to our family" Sam's voice boomed behind her. "You nearly killed your father!" Lois' voice continued, her face in pure rage.
Jayden brought her hands to her head. This wasn't real. "Are you sure about that?" Thaddeus stood before her, an evil glint in his eyes. "No one even noticed you were gone, that's how much they care" He spat, towering up over her.
Jayden woke with a start, feeling the new sensation of her fingers tingling with the white-ish blue light. She could hear Clark ready to come in if necessary.
'Calm down my dear' that voice spoke. Jayden jumped a bit, the voice scaring her. She was going crazy for sure. 'Calm the mind. Pretend the power is like a light switch and gently turn it off
Most people will get help about the voices in their heads but Jayden wasn't normal by any means.
She let out a breath, focusing on turning the light off. Slowly her veins began to bring the power upward before it completely vanished. Jayden looked down, noticing the usual blue in her hair was now almost white.
Opening the door, Clark only smiled at her seeing no visible powers in use. "I'm okay Dad, promise" Jayden sighed, kissing her father's cheek. "I know. I know" He admitted, just happy his daughter was safe and in some sort of control. The sound of an ELT took Jayden by surprise, still getting used to the sound.
"Grandpa. You should go" Jayden said, becoming more familiar with the sound differences between the three ELTs. "I love you" Clark said before he was gone in a blink of an eye. "Love you too" Jayden answered before letting out a sigh of relief.
...
Jayden huffed as she put the now empty corn stalk on the ground. "Harvest Fest?" Jordan asked, looking at his father in surprise."So, is that why you've been "Supermanning" all week?" Jon continued from his brother's statement, his disbelief clear as water. "So you free up some time to go to this?" Jayden finished before feeling her phone buzz next to her on the hay barrel she was sitting on. "It's a tradition! Goes all the way back to when Smallville was established in 1949. It's one of the best things about being here" Clark began to rant, sitting across from Jayden who looked up at him as if he told her the stupidest fact to the known universe. Jayden only rolled her eyes, looking back at her phone and typing away. "I have been hearing about this from your dad since we first started dating" Lois told her kids, noticing the small smirks on her daughter's face
"Bedtime stories to help you sleep, or what?" Jon joked, earning a chuckle from Lois who got a small glare from her husband. "Either way, it doesn't sound like much of a festival" Jordan and Jayden pointed out, the latter not even looking up from her phone. "Just sounds like a whole bunch of people selling stuff" Jayden added, finally looking up from her phone.
"Not just sell. Share! You know, whatever they can, with anyone who needs it" Clark defended as if someone had insulted him straight to his face. "Think of it as Smallville's version of Burning Man" Lois compared to the triplets poorly. "Minus the fires and BO, I hope" Jayden commented, causing her brothers to laugh before she put her attention back to her phone.
"Ha, ha" Clark laughed dryly at his daughter's comment. "Your grandmother loved it, okay? She used to spend weeks planning what we were gonna donate. She made lists and spreadsheets" He told them, hoping they would share his love of the holiday. "Your dad learned a lot about giving and helping people in need from this. Your dad's not Superman just 'cause he has powers, you know" Lois told them, hoping to be the mediator among the family. "Aw, thanks, baby" Clark smiled, kissing his wife's cheek.
"I know you guys aren't sold, but when you see everyone come together like this, the... the sense of community, it's... it's the best of what Smallville is" Clark promised the three, who didn't seem that excited like he was. "It just doesn't sound like much of a festival" Jordan told him, his brother and sister agreeing with his statement. "Well, they have all that stuff too. The food stands alone. Funnel cakes, fried cheese curds..." Clark began to list off the top of his head hoping to appease his triplets.
"Ooh! The Fishers! Every year, they have this "Sugar Bowl" stand. They make chocolate bacon. So good!" Clark's eyes lit up at the thought, not even registering his wife and kids disgusted faces. "Uh, Eliza's vegetarian, so" Jon pointed out to his overexcited father. "Hey, I'm glad she's finally able to come visit" Lois smiled, happy her son got to see his girlfriend again after almost a month of video chats. "Look, the Harvest Fest is special, okay? Eliza's gonna love it, you're gonna love it... all of you are gonna love it" Clark told his family, looking them all in the eyes, trying to also gain Jayden's attention.
"Yeah if Jay can stop texting her girlfriend for five minutes" Jon snickered, finally gaining the girl's attention. "Not my girlfriend dipshit" Jayden glared at him, her eyes glowing softly. "Sure, so when are you two getting married?" Jordan smirked, earning a very painful elbow to the stomach. "Not the only one with super strength now" Jayden stuck her tongue out.
Clark gave her a disapproving stare. "Rebel" He dragged out in a dangerous tone. Jayden held her hands up in defense, dropping her phone on the hay. Jon was quick to grab it, smiling as she left it open. "Oooo" He smirked, taking a glance at the contact. "Flower girl? Definitely not your girlfriend" Jon teased, wiggling his eyebrows. This was his sweet revenge for when his sister did the same to him last year.
Jayden glared at him, no glow this time thank the gods. "Give it back doofus" Jayden warned him, trying to grab the phone. "Jay Jay and Lilli, sitting in a tree!" Jon began to sing loudly, earning laughs from his brother. "K-I-S-S-I-N-G!" He finished the first verse before Jayden tackled him to the ground. The two roughhoused for a few moments, messing up each other's hair, a good few bruises earning life before Clark picked the two up by their shirts. "Okay, you two that's enough" He sighed, thankfully grateful that some things will never change between the siblings.
The pair had a staring contest while Clark had them in the air, Jayden smirked as she made her eyes glow causing Jon to blink. "Cheater" He huffed as Clark lowered them back on the ground. Jayden only rolled her eyes before snatching her phone from the ground. She read the last text before taking off the gloves on her hands. "Gotta go!" She said before running into the house. She emerged a few moments later with a very familiar rucksack to her brothers.
"She's back!" Jon called as Jordan had to contain his laughter. Jayden smirked at her brothers before grabbing her skateboard. Lois huffed in annoyance as her daughter blew her and Clark kisses before skating towards town.
"What is she gonna do now?" Lois asked the world. Clark had tried to x-ray vision the bag only to realize that Jayden had lined it with lead.
...
Lilli grabbed the neon green paint can as Jayden sprayed the violet on the walls. "Are you sure we won't get caught?" Lilli asked her as Jayden began to climb the jungle gym to get at a better angle.
Jayden had her hair up in two space buns, the greeny-blue hue of her fading dye falling against the dark brown roots. She wore a black leather jacket with multiple sewn on patches of the heroes in the world. On the front just above her chest was a superman one that looked fairly new.
"You a big fan of Superman?" Lilli asked, finishing up her part of their little project. "Since I could remember. But Killer Frost is my favourite hero of all time" Jayden answered, hanging upside down on the rope, spraying over some of the blue and yellow she had previously painted. "Does this look good?" Jayden called out, climbing down the rope.
Lilli took a few steps back, admiring their work. "Good enough to get you suspended" Lilli declared as Jayden jumped down. Jayden ran up beside her, smiling at her next punishment. "Well just because I'm in a new town doesn't mean I'm gonna change who I am" Jayden shrugged, packing up her spray paints.
"Where to next?" Lilli asked the Kent girl. Jayden gave the girl a wide smile, her eyes widening too. She grabbed Lilli's hand as she dragged her out of the school building. "Ever on a board before?" Jayden asked the girl. Lilli shook her head. "Do you trust me?" Jayden asked Lilli, holding her hand out.
Jai looked at Lillian with her hand out. "Do you trust me?"
Lilli smiled, nodding as she took Jayden's hand. "I trust you" Lilli smiled at her, hopping on the skateboard. "Let's go. Hold on tight!" Jayden said, taking off with Lilli's arms wrapped around her waist.
...
The pair skated through the town, Lilli had to pick up a bag of clothes to donate for Harvest Fest from her brother's RV. "You know, my Dad is literally like a golden retriever over this festival" Jayden said as the pair walked into the convention centre. "Isn't he gonna be here then?" Lilli asked the girl.
"I can handle my Dad. It's my mom that scares me" Jayden commented as they walked up to Lana. "Hey, Lana" Jayden smiled at the woman. "Jayden, Lilli! It is so nice to see you both" Lana greeted with a warm smile. "A mix of men and women clothes from New Orleans. Thought Smallville could use some good ol' voodoo fashion in the wardrobe" Lilli smiled, putting the bag on the table. "Why thank you Lilli, but shouldn't you both be in school?" Lana questioned the pair.
Jayden and Lilli looked at each other before answering. "I won't tell Dad if you won't" Jayden smiled at her father's best friend. Lana only shook her head at the girl. "You are truly Clark's daughter" Lana told Jayden, who noticed a shadow falling over her. "He's not behind me is he?" Jayden asked the woman. "No, but if you two are gonna skip school can you not hold up the line" Lana explained to the two girls.
"Right, thank you, Lana!" Lilli smiled as she dragged Jayden away from getting herself in more trouble. Jayden only smiled at Lilli, who was very clear on making sure the girl didn't get herself caught. "You just have a sixth sense for trouble don't you" Lilli raised her eyebrows at the girl.
"Lois Lane's daughter right here, what did you expect?" Jayden shrugged as Lilli facepalmed. 'Someone less sarcastic than Natalie that what' Lilli thought, huffing with her arms now crossed. "Don't give me that look, this is who I am. Take it or leave" Jayden told the young witch, turning to the jewellery section on the booths around her.
"Oh I plan to take it, if you wouldn't mind being my date at the festival?" Lilli stated, causing Jayden to turn around just as quick. "Date? Like platonic or..."Jayden was at a loss for words. "Romantic, if you want it to be" Lilli smiled shyly, looking at Jayden with hopeful eyes.
"Yeah, I'd love that" Jayden smiled back. Lilli felt a wave of danger, turning her head away from Jayden as they glowed green. "We need to go" Lilli told her, dragging the Kent girl to the nearest exit. "Lilli, slow down" Jayden gasped, before she was pushed back.
"Jayden!" Lilli gasped, catching her hand from underneath the burning beam. "Levare" her hand glowed green, her veins doing the same so the beam lifted off of Jayden. She was out cold, a nasty burn scar showing on her arm. "Jay! Jay wake up" Lilli shook her, trying to wake her up.
"Someone, help! She won't wake up!" Lilli called out, trying to get closer to Jayden. "Surgere" Lilli tried, hoping the spell would work to wake her. "Who's there!" Lilli froze at his voice. If she didn't call for him, Jayden would wake with something that she wasn't ready for.
"Help! Please! She won't wake up" Lilli called out to Superman, the cold of his ice breath causing her to become more quiet and calm. "What happened?" Superman asked her, holding Jayden in his arms as Lilli was now able to get up. "The beam fell on her and I think she hit her head badly" Lilli told him, seeing his concern.
"Are you okay?" He asked her, noticing her fear of him. "Yeah" Lilli tried to walk forward but she almost fell. "Just overwhelmed. I... I need to find my brother" Lilli looked around for her phone, noticing Jayden's necklace was on the floor. "Her necklace!" Lilli exclaimed, picking it up, she walked over to Superman, clasping the necklace around Jayden's neck.
Lilli felt the overwhelming power admitting from the pendant as it made contact with Jayden's skin. "Are you sure you're okay?" Superman asked her again, seeing her own pendant glow slightly. "Yeah, Just get her help, please" Lilli told Superman as a Fireman came in to take her away.
...
Lilli burst through the RV, grabbing her spellbooks with a flick of her wrist. "Apertum" Lilli commanded, every book shoe owned opening floating among the green mist her powers gave off. "Quaerere Clark Witches" Lilli's eyes glowed as the pages began to move quickly, some books closing and falling to the floor.
A dark blue, dusty book came forward presenting its findings. Lilli read the page, the horror of what she saw reflecting off her face.
"Lilli!" John's voice called out, rushing towards her. "Claude!" Lilli clapped her hands, closing all the books and making them fall to the floor. John looked at his sister, his eyebrow raised. "Lillian, what's wrong?" John asked her, noticing the many books now on the floor.
Lilli looked at John with serious eyes. "Jayden. We can't use her in the plan" Lilli told him, looking away. John was shocked to say the least. "Lilli, this was your plan. Use the descendant of Naer Van to kill Kal-El. Why would we stop now if we're so close to saving this planet" John pointed out, sitting across from his sister.
Lilli looked down at her hands, the green pendant catching her eye. "Her powers are too unstable for us to control. If we use unstable power, we die. We are mortal, we will die first and Kal-El will survive" Lilli lied, looking her brother in the eye. She prayed that he believed her lie. He could never understand the truth and even if she told him, he would never listen.
John stayed quiet for a moment, trying to decide if this was how to proceed. "Any other suggestions?" John asked his sister, believing her lie. Lilli opened up a different spellbook on a marked page. "Mother studied most of our world's Kryptonite. Instead of looking for Green Kryptonite to kill him, we look for the Kryptonite that will lure him into a trap" Lilli explained, showing John the page.
He looked at Lilli in amazement. "Here, in Smallville?" He questioned, not believing it could be this easy. Lilli nodded, closing htr book once more. "All you need is access to the mines, with Morgan Edge around it will be hard" Lilli told him. John nodded, thinking of a plan. "I think I can do that" He pondered, sitting back.
...
Jayden ran towards the booths in the center of town, her hair whipping behind her as she did. Her glasses almost fell off every time she took a sharp turn. She knew that if her parents caught her she'd be grounded but she didn't care, she was too angry to care.
She was so angry that it caught her off guard when she fell to the floor. "Jayden!" Lilli called out, holding her hand out for the fallen girl. Jayden shook her head as Lilli helped her up. "Sorry, I was thinking and I just didn't see where I was going" Jayden told her, looking around her for anyone who saw what happened.
Lilli caught Jayden by her chin, gently facing the teen to look at her. "Jay, it's okay" Lilli smiled, looking into Jayden's eyes. Jayden, caught off guard once more by the close proximity the two were in.
"S–Sorry I'm late" Jayden breathed out, walking back slightly. Lilli dropped her hand from Jayden's face. "Better late than never, come on" Lilli smiled, dragging Jayden gently by the hand.
"Our date has only begun" Lilli giggled as she began to run with Jayden catching up to her.
Jayden laughed as Lilli's eyes widened when they came across a crystal booth. Lilli looked at each crystal with amazement. She could feel the properties as her hands ghosted over them. Jayden stood to the side, admiring the way Lilli's fingers ghosted over the individual crystals with such wonder. She was so cute that it made Jayden want to just... kiss her.
"Done staring Metropolis?" Lilli smirked, crossing her arms with her amused eyes. Jayden, taken back, raised her eyebrow at Lilli. "What did you just call me?" She asked, trying to hold back the laugh inside her. "Metropolis. 'Cause that's where you're from, so it suits you" Lilli reasoned with her.
Jayden went so red it matched her father's cape. "Never say that in front of my parents" She grimaced, knowing that she would never live it down. Lilli began to laugh at the seriousness in her voice. "Ever" Jayden added, trying to control her reddened face. Lilli burst into laughter, holding her newly bought crystals in a small pouch.
"What, I'm too embarrassing for you?" She commented with a cheeky smile. Jayden's eyes widened so much that people must have thought she was high. "What! No! It's just my mom calls my dad Smallville from time to time and I dunno, it feels weird being able to do that with someone so smart and cool like you cause your so pretty and–"
Lilli pecked her cheek, stopping Jayden from rambling on so much that she might let something slip. "Thank you for the compliments, Metropolis" Lilli smiled, hooking her arm around Jayden's. "No problem, New Orleans" Jayden tried out only for the pair to burst out laughing again. "No, don't call me that again. Lilli will do or Flower" the witch compromised before a loud bang took them out of their little bubble. Lilli looked to the crowd following the bang and then back to Jayden.
"Was that?"
"Yep"
"We signed it, right?"
"We sure did"
"We should run, shouldn't we?"
"As fast as the Flash, that's for fucking sure" Jayden intertwined her fingers with Lilli's before the pair began running away from the commotion. The girls noticed that many of the locals were doused in blue and green paint powder and they decided it was best to get as far from them before they got caught.
The two hid in a small little alleyway in between two buildings, backs against the walls as they tried to regain their breath. "We are so screwed" Jayden gasped, laughing more than ever. She used to do this kinda stuff a lot back in Metropolis but for some strange reason, this felt completely different.
She looked up at Lilli, noticing the light freckles on her face, how her eyes had this charming spark to them and the way her laugh felt like a siren drawing her to a death she wouldn't protest to. Jayden didn't notice how she was drawing closer to the girl, subconsciously staring at her lips.
Lilli noticed this however. One moment the silence was full of breath, the next the two girls closed the gap between them.
Jayden's hands went to her cheeks, ghosting the flushed cheeks. Lilli's had found their way to her hips, pulling the brunette closer if possible. The kiss brought tingles throughout their bodies. Butterflies erupted in their stomachs as their eyes remained closed.
Lilli felt a surge of magic in her veins, certain that Jayden felt it two. She could feel their pendants glowing with power as the kiss lasted longer than anticipated. That ebing it happened at all.
They pulled back gently, looking each other in the eyes. "I've been wanting to do that since I spilled beer all over you" Lilli admitted, her hands not leaving Jayden's hips. Jayden caressed her cheeks, feeling the warmth in the autumn cold. "Looks like great minds think alike" Jayden let out a raspy laugh.
Lilli went in once more, a smaller peck to Jayden's bruised lips. "Does that mean you like me too?" Lilli asked her, uncertain of her feelings.
Jayden pulled her in for another kiss, more confident than before. "What do you think?" She muttered between the kisses.
...
Jayden closed the door as quietly as she could. The lights flickered on the moment she turned. Clark looked at her with his 'i'm disappointed at you but also angry you didn't leave a note' look. Lois right behind her, arms crossed with an eyebrow raised.
"Not only have you skipped school, ended up in a fire, caused a powder paint explosion in the town square but you left the house without telling anyone in this family who have been worried sick about you for almost four hours" Lois began, her voice steady and very disapproving. Jayden was in a lovestruck state, unable to even answer with a smart remark.
Clark, taken back by the small smile on his daughter's face, had his eyebrow raised. "No smart remark or fake excuse? How hard did you hit your head?" He asked her. Jayden only smiled softly, shrugging her shoulders. "For once, I'm in too much of a good mood to even care" She admitted, hanging her jacket up on the hooks.
Lois let out a big gasp, her eyes widening as she walked closer to her daughter. "You kissed Lilli" Lois answered with a giddy voice compared to her previous tone. Jayden let out a nervous laugh, only confirming her mother's suspicions. "I'm going to bed, long night from running away from the cops. Love you both!" Jayden exclaimed before running up the wooden stairs, leaving gobsmacked parents in her dust.
Lois looked to Clark with almost teary eyes. "She's so much like you" Lois commented, resting her head on Clark's chest, something that had become second nature to her since they first dated. "My little girl's growing up" Clark added, playing with Lois' hair. "She's in so much trouble after I get every juicy detail out of her" Lois declared, knowing that Jayden was listening to her.
Clark laughed slightly, expecting nothing less from his wife.
Jayden turned the corner, seeing Jon looking at her with sad eyes. Jayden only glared at him as she walked towards him to get to her room. "Jay, can we talk?" Jon asked, looking defeated and on the brink of a hangover. Jayden only glared at him more. "What so you can leave like it's nothing?" She spat at her triplet.
Jon only looked down ashamed. "I've done a lot of shit to keep you happy, to keep Jordan happy. I've never asked for anything in return but knowing that you were so easily prompted to leave makes me wonder why I did any of it at all" Jayden spat before pushing past her brother.
She fell onto her bed, grabbing her phone and headphones as she did. She opened up her phone, noticing a message from Lilli.
