Chapter 12: Lights Out

After Cloud's arrival, Mario decided to rest for a little while. After all, everything that had happened in the last... however long it had taken to get this far had physically drained him. He also knew his head wasn't in the game one hundred percent. There were many questions swirling around in his head. Where was Sonic? And wherever he was, what was Waluigi doing to him? What was Waluigi's point for his new addiction of power? Sadly, he knew he couldn't answer these questions, at least not now. When Mario woke up later, he definitely felt refreshed. He wasn't sure how long he'd been asleep, what time it was, or if the people in this world even knew how to tell time. He decided to see if Shadow was still in the library. When Mario arrived, he saw Shadow face down, sleeping like a log. Deciding it was best not to bother him, Mario decided to continue this recruitment quest. He pulled out the device, which was once again not functioning correctly. He was about to find his next destination, when Falcon arrived.
"Hey Mario. Do you need some company? I feel like I left you hanging yesterday."
"You're fine, Falcon. And yeah, I could use your help.  It'll be good to have the company," Mario said. He set the device, and the two headed to the next destination. Moments later the two showed up in a the new destination. The place looked a little older.
"So, where are we?" Falcon asked.
"I'm not sure," Mario said, as a clock on the wall caught his eye. The clock read 10:35 p.m.
"Well, hopefully, time is somewhat normal here," Mario said. The two heard noise coming from around the corner. Upon rounding the corner, the two realized they were in a sports arena. The from the entrance, Mario could see there was ring. A boxing ring.
"Boxing? Huh. I remember when I was a referee."
"Wait, you were a referee?"
"Yeah. It was pretty sweet, I'd say."
"Then why'd you become a plumber?"
"Hey, would you rather have a guy watching two shirtless dudes punch each other in the face, or have a guy who makes sure you have a working toilet?"
"Fair enough," Falcon said. That was when the crowd roared, hearing this, Mario and Falcon dashed down the steps of the top entrance getting close enough to see the ring. Mario noticed a small guy, wearing black tank top, as well as green shorts and gloves, standing in triumph.
"There you have it, Madison Square Garden! Despite Glass Joe's best efforts, as well as his new face mask, Little Mac retains the WVBA World Circuit championship!" An announcer's voice boomed. The crowd roared again. A man wearing jeans and a red sweatshirt entered the ring with the championship belt.
"That's right! You're looking at the champ, baby! Way to go Mac!" The man said, putting the title around Mac's waist, then raising his hand in triumph. That was when there was a loud thump, as someone entered the ring. Mario looked in shock.
"Wario!" Mario gasped in disbelief. Wario was wearing his normal yellow attire, now with red boxing gloves.
"Aha! Little Mac, I've come to take your title!" Wario said.
"What's this? A new foe has challenged Little Mac, just after a title defense!" the announcer said.
"Are you crazy pal? You can't just come in here with gloves and demand a title shot! Why would Mac...," The man was interrupted by Mac, who put his hand up to stop his coach.
"Whoa, Mac are you sure? You just had a title defense," The man asked, with a look of concern on his face. Mac nodded with confidence.
"Alright, son. Teach this sucka a lesson!" The man said. Mac handed his coach the title, who handed the title to the referee.
"This is amazing! Just after an incredible title defense, Little Mac has accepted the challenge of a newcomer for the WVGA World Circuit Title! What a champion!" The announcer boasted. The crowd cheered.
"Round one! Fight!" The referee shouted. However, almost immediately, Wario shoulder charged into the referee, knocking him to the ground, causing him to roll out of the ring. Mario glances at Falcon.
"And you wonder why I decided to be a plumber?" Mario said sarcastically.
"Well, that's certainly uncalled for! That might be a disqualification! Unfortunately, the referee is out! What will happen now?" The announcer yelled. That was when Wario immediately threw the gloves off his hands.
"Now that that's out of the way, I can destroy you!" Wario crowed, charging at Mac. Mac used his speed to dodge. He went for a couple quick strikes, which Wario dodged.
"Whoa, for a guy his size, he's pretty fast," Falcon said, watching the fight closely.
"Yeah. I've fought him enough to know. He's pretty strong, too. This kid could be in trouble," Mario analyzes. Back in the ring, Mac went for a couple more strikes. That was when Wario opened his mouth and tried to grab Mac with his mouth!
"What in the world!?!? Not only has Mac's challenger taken off his gloves, he just tried to BITE the champion!" The announcer said. The crowd began to boo.
"What kind of sick person tries to eat his opponent in a boxing match?" Mac's coach said, looking shocked and disgusted. Mac, seeing this, dashed at Wario, taking a couple swings. His last one connected, sending Wario to the ropes. However, Wario simply bounces off the ropes, coming back with a shoulder charge, strong enough to knock Mac to the ring canvas.
"Mac! Get up baby! You can't go out. Not like this!" Mac's trainer urged, as Mac struggled to get to his feet. Wario laughed as Mac remained down. Mario has seen enough.
"That's it," Mario said, running for the barricade.
"Wait, Mario! What are you doing?" Falcon yelled. Mario had ignored Falcon, leaping over the barricade, then triple jumping into the ring. He dashed towards Wario.
"This is madness! Another stranger has come into the ring and he's attacking the challenger! This is the most bizarre thing I've ever seen in WVBA history!" The announcer cried. The crowd was now mixed. Some cheering the fact that Mario was taking out Wario, others booing for the fact that these two strangers had just randomly jumped in the ring. Mario and Wario now began throwing punches at one another.
"Mario! You're getting in my way again!" Wario said angrily trying to shoulder charge his adversary. Mario wasn't falling for it though.
"What are you doing here? Why do you want a stupid boxing title?" Mario demanded.
"Hey! The WVBA World Circuit Championship is one of the most prestigious boxing titles in the world!" Mac's trainer interrupted. Mario and Wario glared at him for a second, then continued fighting. From the behind the barricade, Falcon continued to look on in disbelief. Mario and Wario continued to duke it out. However, just when Wario seemed to get the advantage, Mario rolled out of the way. Mac had been behind Mario, and he uppercutted Wario in the chin. Wario flew back on his back, stunned.
"What a comeback! With an assist from an unknown person, Little Mac appears to have defeated his opponent!" The announcer shouted. The crowd let out another deafening roar. Suddenly, just above the ring, there was giant flash. The crowd now shouted in confusion. Mario, covered his eyes. It reminded him of the white flashes that occurred in his first dimensional adventure. When the flash went down, Mario looked in shock to see who was floating above the ring.
"W-Waluigi???" Mario gasped in disbelief.
"What's this? Another potential challenger?" The announcer asked.
"Hmph. Looks like I have to do this myself," Waluigi scoffed.
"Not if I have to say anything about it!" Mario said, jumping up to Waluigi, with his hammer ready to go. However, when he swung the hammer at Waluigi, an invisible barrier surrounded Waluigi. Waluigi yawned, then with the wave of the Power Glove on his hand, sent Mario flying back. Mario flew back, landning on his back on the ring canvas. From behind the barricade, it didn't take Falcon long to realize this was the same guy who Mario had told him about. It was time take action. Falcon leaped over the barricade, jumped to the top rope of the ring then jumped up to Waluigi's level.
"Falcon PUNCH!" Falcon yelled, releasing the deadly attack. However, the result was the same. Falcon was sent flying back. Mac and his trainer looked with mixed feelings of horror, shock, and confusion. With a wave of the Power Glove, the World Circuit title belt flew up to him. Waluigi grabbed the belt. As he did, the title flashed in a yellow glow. When the flash was over, the WVBA World Circuit Championship was gone. Instead, a yellow stone sat in Waluigi's hand. The Soul Stone. Waluigi took the stone and put it in one of the empty slots in the Power Glove. Once he was done, he stared at the crowd.
"Those of you who enjoy living, I suggest you leave, or this building will be in ruins," Waluigi said threateningly. Hearing this, the crowd screamed and dashed for the exits. Mario looked to see Mac and his trainer trying to help people at the ringside area. Mario then saw Waluigi and Wario escaping through another portal.
"Waluigi!" Mario yelled, dashing towards the portal. But once again, he was too late. The ceiling began to crumble.
"Mario! We got to get out of here, NOW!" Falcon yelled, knocking Mario out of his shock. Mario quickly grabbed the device, after fiddling with it, got the portal to appear. He and Falcon dashed through the portal as Madison Square Garden began to collapse.
