chap 12

"So, I guess you're getting the night off," Anna mentioned, tossing her charger on her bed.

"I suppose so," Loki agreed shortly, following her with his eyes.

"Must be nice to get a proper night's rest," she tried conversing, grabbing a hoodie from her closet.

"I do believe a proper rest is impossible on that enlarged brick they claim my bed," Loki scoffed.

"Well, you can take mine for the night," Anna offered with a shrug, Loki's eyebrows immediately narrowing. "I mean, I won't be using it anyway."

"You want me to occupy your bed?" Loki asked carefully.

"Yeah. I mean no. I, I don't know, it was just an offer," she stated before shaking her head and putting on the hoodie.

"Do you really think this... Sleepover, is a good idea?" he questioned instead; "You don't think it an unnecessary risk?"

"I mean, yeah," Anna agreed with a shrug; "But Tony says it's alright, and Peter will be there."

"Right, the spider," Loki hummed, leaning back in the armchair he usually only sat in when Anna slept. He glanced at her back as she looked in the mirror, putting her hair in a ponytail. "I wish I could come with you. Assist him in watching you," he admitted, making Anna smile into the mirror.

"You'd hate hanging out with us," she said with a small laugh.

"I'd hate hanging out with the spider, his friend and that concupiscent Harry, yes, but I do believe it could and would be worth it, as it would save me the trouble of worrying for you," Loki explained.

"First of all, I have no idea what concupiscent means, and second of all, it's sweet that you worry, but there's no need to. I'm going to be fine," she assured him; "Besides, I might end up heading home early if Bruce or Clint needs healing."

"Considering their collective amount of braincells being below five, I would assume it a fairly good bet that at least one of them does," Loki theorised.

"They're not stupid," Anna said; "Well, Bruce isn't."

"Where did the boy go?" Loki changed the subject, looking around as if he only just noticed that he wasn't there.

"Out the window, home to change before heading over to Harry's," Anna explained with a careless shrug before turning to Loki.

"You look nice, in spite of the midgardian attire," he stated honestly, looking over her new hairstyle and hoodie. She smiled slightly, seemingly entertained by Loki's words.

"Well, pretty sure Harry would be confused if I showed up in an Asgardian ball gown," she commented, pocketing the charger she'd thrown on her bed.

"I'm sure he would not mind," Loki mentioned quietly, imagining Anna in the dresses he was used to, desperately trying to distract himself from that very thought. Anna was a midgardian, and proper asgardian clothing would not change that, there was simply no way he could be finding her so attractive. She was beautiful, doubtlessly so, and in a way where her soft oval face and brown eyes that refused to remain that one colour and instead sparkled in every colour depending the light could not possibly remain unnoticed, but also in a way that seemed so very real and earthbound.

"Are you okay?" Anna interrupted his thoughts, looking at him with a slight hint of worry.

"Yes," Loki immediately replied; "Yes, of course. I simply got lost in my mind."

"To be fair, I can only imagine that it's an interesting place," Anna pointed out, smiling at him; "I'm under strict orders to keep my phone on me at all times, so you can get JARVIS to contact me at any time, okay?"

"Why would I do that?" Loki asked absentmindedly, back to imagining a green dress running silk-like along Anna's body.

"I don't know, I guess," she admitted, laughing awkwardly; "It was stupid, sorry. I'll see you tomorrow, Loki."

"If it isn't my favourite Anna!" Harry greeted from the door.

"And your favourite Peter?" Peter questioned from behind Anna.

"Oh, no, you're my second favourite Peter, but it was a tight run, I'll tell you that," Harry replied jokingly, hugging them both before gesturing for them to enter.

"I brought chips," Peter told, holding up the two bags and smiling awkwardly.

"Snacks? You just knocked Peter Higgs right outta the race!" Harry exclaimed, grabbing them and leading the way through the big hall and into the kitchen, tossing the chips on the marble counter.

"Who?" Anna asked oddly, watching as Harry grabbed a bowl from a cupboard; "And where's Ned?"

"Ned couldn't make it, and Higgs's a theoretical physicist," Peter informed.

"Worked on the mass of subatomic particles, even won a Nobel Prize," Harry added.

"Ah. That guy," Anna muttered, grabbing a chip from the now full bowl.

"Okay, I'm just going to say this," Harry told while watching the movie, looking interested at the screen.

"Yeah?" Anna questioned, grabbing another handful of chips and noticing something. Harry's hand was bruised. Not severely so, not enough so that he couldn't hide it until that moment, but a slight blue tint was spread across the knuckles and it was scratched to blood from whatever he'd punched.

"I don't like Kat's dress all that much, but, but, I think you could pull it off," he stated, grinning like a kid.

"You wanna know what I wanna pull off?" Anna replied, not looking away from the flatscreen in Harry's room. Both she and Harry were sitting on the floor, their backs leaned against the bed.

"What?" Harry replied, rolling his eyes in advance of the answer.

"Your head," Anna told, grabbing a chip from her little pile and putting it in her mouth.

"I can't believe I've never seen this movie," Peter mumbled, sitting on the bed and leaning against the wall; "It's so good?"

Anna smiled and looked at Harry, who seemed equally enthusiastic about his choice of film, and turned back to see Kat and Patrick.

"That could be us, you know," Harry pointed out, tossing a chip in the air and catching it in his mouth.

"It kind of already is," Anna mentioned with a shrug, leaning further back against the bed.

"Because we're in love?" Harry asked, looking at Anna with raised eyebrows.

"No," Anna scoffed jokingly; "Because I hate you."

"Oh, right, and you'll grow to love me," Harry figured, nodding understandingly.

"No, that's where the resemblance stops," she replied, Harry chuckling quietly. Anna looked behind them to check on Peter, whose head was leaned against the wall and eyes were clothes. His mouth was slightly open and he was breathing deeply.

"Oh, shit," Anna muttered to herself; "Peter, you fell asleep." She tried waking him, reaching her arm up and patting the part of his leg she could reach.

"Let him sleep, you saw how tired he was," Harry said; "We'll watch the next without him, then he'll probably be awake for the one after that."

"I think I should wake him," Anna told, grimacing slightly.

"Anna, c'mon, you've seen how tired he's been lately," Harry pointed out.

"What are you talking about?"

"I don't really know, but... There's something going on, and I'm worried about him. Until you started hanging out with us he'd constantly cancel plans because he had homework, but then in class he wouldn't have the homework done. I know it doesn't sound like much, but it's not like him," Harry told quietly, glancing at Peter; "And I honestly don't think he's been sleeping much lately, I've caught him falling asleep in class several times."

"Oh," Anna realised; "Actually, I think you're right."

"I am?" Harry asked, raising his eyebrows.

"Yeah, Peter did mention something about that internship," she lied smoothly; "With all the classes he's taking and that on the side, he doesn't have much spare time. Whenever he thinks he'll get time to do homework, he'll be interrupted by Mr Stark."

Harry shook his head, sighing.

"That dude seriously needs to realise that Pete's just a human, he's not some kind of superhero."

"Agreed," Anna said while nodding. Truth be told, she wasn't really that tired, and whenever Harry would leave to get drinks or go to the bathroom, she could wake Peter and they could say he just woke. She couldn't exactly go ahead and wake Peter after hearing Harry's concern and even backing it up, so even if it was a bit mischievous, that plan was going to have to be how it was done.

"Besides, his movie suggestions suck," Harry added, using the remote to go back to the search bar of Netflix.

"You know what sucks?" Anna asked; "You." Harry stopped with the remote turned against the TV, facing Anna while shaking his head in disappointment.

"Words hurt, Anna. You know that, right?" he asked in a serious voice.

"You wanna know what hurts?"

"Anna, I swear to god," Harry interrupted, making Anna grin happily. "Just for that, I get to pick the next movie." he returned his attention to the remote, pressing the buttons to summon the desired movie.

"Mean girls?" Anna asked; "What is it with you and teenage rom-coms?"

"I don't want you to feel alone. You're so mean, and now you're not the only one," he said, smiling mockingly at Anna who just laughed soundlessly.

"Very considerate," she applauded, grabbing the chips bowl from him.

"That's just how I am," he replied, sending her a happy smile.

"Hey, Harry?" Anna began, glancing at Peter to check if he was still sleeping.

"Yeah?" he asked distractedly, taking a sip of his soda.

"What happened to your hand?"

Harry's eyes left the screen and he looked at Anna.

"You noticed," he pointed out a little sadly, Anna only shrugging in reply.

"I... I don't always get along with my father," Harry stated, looking at his hand.

"You punched your dad?" Anna asked, shocked.

"What? No! No, he was just... He was all over me about my grades and I got frustrated and I kind of punched the wall," he admitted with an embarrassed shrug.

"Your grades aren't bad though," Anna remembered confused.

"They are if your father is a brilliant scientist," Harry pointed out with a scoff.

"If you want, we can study together. One of my teachers, a few actually, are very focused on science. Besides," she added, grabbing a chip when she sensed Harry didn't want to talk about it; "Sounds like the wall was being a bitch anyway." Harry smiled slightly, turning his attention back to the movie.

Mean girls was a masterpiece of cinematic photography, and there was no arguing with that... According to Harry. Anna, however, felt her mind slowly slipping away from Cady. She glanced at her phone, clicking the power button to check for messages, sighing invertly when she saw none. She didn't expect any, Tony knew where she was and Loki made it pretty clear he wouldn't need to text her. Besides, he was probably busy. Probably reading.

Realising she hadn't left any new books for him, Anna realised he'd probably had to retort to a book he'd already read. Maybe pride and prejudice? He seemed to be quite fond of that one. Maybe she should have him watch one of the movie versions. Probably the 2005 version with Keira Knightly. Anna hadn't realised it before, but Darcy actually reminded her of Loki. The way he probably felt in crowds, not because he's cruel, but because he's not good with social gatherings, and the way he's too prideful for his own good and too judged by everybody around him. As she imagined the role of Darcy replaced with Loki, she slowly nodded off.
