Chapter 2
I pull Luca away by the arm with all the power God has vested in me.
"Do you have any idea what you did?" I yell at him as he pushes his hair back fuming with anger.
"He called me a-" "So? He's a kid! You can't hit him just like that!" I snap. He says nothing.
"Luca?" "If I had not hit him, he would have called someone else the same. " I sigh.
"The kid's a pothead," The conductor chimes in.
"Him?" I ask, he nods and says
" Roland, I know his folks. Poor things." I stay silent.
"So no one would really care if I kill him?" Luca asks his nostrils flaring with anger "Luca!" I snap.
ROLAND
I glance back at Luca, chatting with the chick at the coffee place, I touch my cheek which was still stinging and shrug as his eyes fall on me.
I look down embarrassed as he arches an eyebrow at me, I build myself up to give him my most menancing glare, he snorts and looks away.
I was tired of people sniffing behind me, I really did not need to get a new one on this trip. I smile to myself as stupid ideas build up inside my head, to be frank, one or two of the ideas were quite feasible.
"Come on, Ester made these especially for you!" Luca tells the conductor whining.
"What? LUCA! Those are store-bought!" She yells from behind. "Don't listen to her she's a Debbie Downer," he says force-feeding him. "Show off," I mutter under my breath. He comes to me after taking a whole rounds of the bus. "Here." He says throwing the leftovers at my lap.
ESTER
"Are you asleep?" He asks me. I blink my eyes open and mutter annoyed "I was trying to sleep," Luca scowls seeming disappointed.
"Luca, what do you want?" I ask trying to rub the sleep off my eyes. "Company." He tells me. "Sleep, Luca..." I plead. He shrugs. "Aren't you tired?" I ask him in disbelief. "I guess...I can't sleep standing" He tells me. I groan.
"I can't believe I'm suggesting this..." I tell him, he looks at me curiously "If you sit down maybe I could..." "Great! come on," He tells me.
I push myself up and let him sit down, he pulls me in "Gently!" I snap."Sorry."He tells me.
"Luca?" I ask after a while. "Yes?" "You won't sexually assault me or anything right?" I ask. He laughs and tells me "No I'm against that. I'm a humanitarian "he adds as an afterthought, "And a feminist. " I gape at him in fake shock... "You chauvinist...." he mocks me. I giggle.
I wake up as sunlight pierces through my eyes and almost turn red on seeing Luca's arm locked safely between mine.
I turn and look to see him fast asleep, I smile pushing his hair up and gaze at his peaceful face for some time. I had no idea how I was so close to a person I had met about twenty-four hours ago.
I slip out to freshen up and come back to see him still asleep and grin as an idea pops up inside my head, I take a big breath and scream into his ear "LUCA!!!!"
"Jesus Christ!" He yells jumping up, hand on his chest. I grin in victory as he looks at me half asleep. "Good afternoon." I greet him. "We are here..." I say seeing his stormy grey eyes confused.
A smile slowly blooms on his face as he scans me from head to toe,
He says "I figured with your mickey mouse sweater." I blush and say "this is a very fashionable sweater. "
"of course."
"Its limited edition. " I explain as he straps up his bag.
"I can see why." He says getting off the bus with me "Fuck off." I curse as he laughs and puts his arm around my neck, casually
"Please tell me that I can get coffee somewhere.." I point to the small shop nearby.
I sip on the bland cup of coffee as Luca makes faces sitting by my side.
"This isn't coffee..." he complains to the shop keeper. I groan, I really didn't want to go through another one of Luca's tantrums again.
"This is coffee," the stout middle-aged man says trying to swallow the steam from the pot of boiling milk, I groan in disgust and put down my coffee on the table seeing the man sneezing near the stove.
"No, this is milk!" Luca snaps at him annoyed. "You drink what you get," he tells us offhandedly. "I'm not drinking this stuff for free!" He snaps at him.
"Luca...." I mutter pulling his sleeve "He's acting like he's doing me some kind of favour!" He tells me furiously, I take his hand and say "I'm begging you. Please don't make a scene again." He must have seen the look in my eyes because he tries to steam off.
"Es-" "I'm not talking to you."
I walk up to the resort as Luca follows me silently like an obedient puppy.
"You are beyond limits. " I say taking my key "That wasn't coffee! Come on you know that's not coffee..." he scowls, I sigh.
"Fine, but you don't get angry the rest of the time we're here!" I demand as he collects his own key. He laughs and says "not possible, I'm only human." I had to agree, even I got angry quickly.
NOTE: Quickly not Luca quickly.
"You will try to control your anger?" I ask climbing up the stairs. He lets out a loud, dramatic sigh and nods, I stroke his soft mop of ebony hair and mutter beaming "good boy."
I snap awake hearing a loud bang and stare at the watch on the bedside table confused,5:00 am. I open the door and lean on it being completely washed out from all the travelling.
"How do you process without sleep?" I ask Luca half amazed half angry, maybe he wasn't human, maybe he was one of those robots that had extremely long-living batteries. He flashes a grin at me.
"Have you seen the sunrise in Manali?" He asks me,
I grab his collar and sob on his shoulder saying "No! I don't to watch a bloody sunrise! I want to sleep, Luca..."
He shrugs and says "I'm sorry...I didn't think...I just..." I feel guilt surging up inside me, the poor thing had woken up at dusk to show me a sunrise and I had shouted at him ruthlessly. I send him out to get dressed and apologise after.
"I take my apology back!" I snap as we climb up a hill in the biting cold. He shrugs and tells me "just a bit more," I scowl and lock my arm around his, He glances up at me.
"Luca!" I gasp in shock as he scoops me up. "We'll both be warm this way," he says the tips of his ears red with the cold. I stay close to Luca trying to absorb every bit of the warmth his body exuded, until he drops me down at the stone bench on the top of the hill.
I rub my cold arms against his as we wait for the sun to rise,
"They're gonna take you to see the sunrise anyway..." he tells me.
"Then why could you not have let me sleep today?" I ask crossly giving him a gentle shove on the head.
He buries his hand in his pockets shivering a bit and tells me
"Well tomorrow we will be one of the 'few 'watching the sunrise but today it's only ours. "
I smile and say patting him on the shoulder. "I'm impressed, you are much smarter than you seem," He winks and nudges me to look to the front.
I forget about the bitter cold and all the trouble we went through to reach the spot on seeing the beautiful golden ball of light come up from the snow-capped mountains.
LUCA
I look away from the sunrise as Ester takes my hand, she had not done it on purpose I realise on seeing her gaze at the sunrise with childlike wonder.
I gaze at her face which was shining beautifully with the young light of the sun.
She turns to me and asks "Where did you hide that camera?" I grin and say "Look..." she pulls me back to get a good look at the picture.
"I look better than usual..." she tells me shyly.
I nod and say "You look beautiful." She blushes red.
"So, I take it that you forgive me for waking you up at dusk?" I ask walking down the slope with her. "It's the best thing anyone has ever done for me," she says pulling me into a hug, I nod staring at her feet.
"Yeah?" "Yeah." "I'll go change?" She asks not quite looking at me "Cool."
"Luca?" I glance up at her bright brown eyes. "Thank you. Really." I smile.
I take a stack of toast and settle down in the only free table, I train my eyes on the stack of bread on seeing Ester come down the stairs wearing a dark red top which made her face glow brighter than the sun.
"Hey," I say as she sits down across me she smiles and tells me "We're going for camping. " I nod and say "It'll be delightful,"
"Come on, be a bit more friendly," she scowls, making me snort.
"Alright, that doesn't sound right. Luca, learn to play well with others. " I shake my head, I had my own principles and it didn't matter to whom I was talking, most of the time.
