Summer Begins

========================
A/N: Hey guys! So, this is my first Billdip fanfiction, but I'm not going to say go easy on me. I want constructive criticism, emphasis on constructive, however. There isn't a lot of paranormal activity type of stuff, but there are some mystery elements. Basically a Modern Billdip AU. Thanks so much for reading this. It means a lot to me.

DISCLAIMER: I, @Forever_Solangelo, do not own any of the characters or people unless I say that I have added an OOC. They belong solely to Alex Hirsch and all of his amazing awesomeness. And I do not own any of the media I may or may not post. I may write something on a piece of paper and take a picture of it for the media. I'll let you know if I do that, because other than that I own nothing.

Anyway, on with the story!

Dipper's POV

Mabel and I got off of the bus that took us to Gravity Falls, Oregon. We hauled our luggage out of the greyhound and into the hot summer sun, warmth bathing our faces in golden luster.

"This is going to be awesome!" Mabel exclaimed in joy.

"Yeah, spending our summer at our cheapskate Grunkle's rundown tourist trap is going to be fabulous." I reply sarcastically.

"Stop being such a grump, Dipper. Look in the bright side of things! We get too go to the woods, and explore the town, and we could visit the lake!"

      I sighed. "Sure, Mabel. Sure."

"Great! Now let's start our walk to the Mystery Shack!"

Mabel marched down the sidewalk, heading east.

    "Uh, Mabel?"

"Not now, Dipper! We must find our Grunkle!"

"Mabel, you're going the wrong way. The Mystery Shack would be over there." I pointed west, the opposite direction of where Mabel was going.

"Oh. Onwards! To our Grunkle's house!" She paraded in the right direction, towing her suitcase behind her.

"Onwards." I mutter under my breath with a slight smile tugging at my lips.

The journey to the Mystery Shack was long, and hot, and uneventful. We had trudged through forest, eventually making our way into town. It was a very worn place, but still had a particular comforting, joyful aura that made up for the simpleminded people and rundown buildings. Maybe stupidity, ignorance, and simplicity made for happy people.

Mabel, of course, beamed at everything, except for maybe when a rat scurried out of an alley and ran across her foot. I never knew she could create such inhumanly sounds.

We then arrived at the Mystery Shack. It was decrepit and isolated from the rest of the town, rotting wood handing stiffly onto the frame of the building, giant red letters that read, 'Mystery Shack', crookedly placed, one, even, had fallen heavily onto the roof.

Mabel and I both stared at it in shock for a moment, before Mabel said, "Well, it could be worse! I mean, there could be creepy totem poles or something-"

"There is a creepy totem pole." I interjected, pointing to a clearing just a little past the Mystery Shack. In the middle of said clearing, an emblem stood tall and alone, giving off an eerie ambience.

"Oh." Mabel said, staring at the totem pole. "That's a bit weird..."

"Yeah, no joke."

"Anyway, let's go inside now! I don't want to be around that any longer than I have to." She said, skipped onto the porch.

I followed suit, hoisting the backpack on my shoulder up a bit more, and securing my tattered green star hat. I knocked on the red wooden door hesitantly.

After waiting for two minutes, I look beside me to Mabel and shrug. "Must not be home-"

The door swung open as we both stumbled back in fright. An elderly man with thinning hair and stubble and and a large pinkish-red nose burst out, arms open wide as he shouted, "Kids!"

Mabel and I both screamed in trepidation, falling back on our bottoms. The ugly man wore a back suit, a cane bouncing in his hand. A fez hat sat slightly crooked on his wide skull.

"Long time no see, suckers. How's it goin' in the city?" He asked, not noticing our confusion, fear, and shock.

"Uh, we love in more of a suburbs type of area-" I started to, awkwardly, but was interrupted by the man.

"Now, Cable and Daisy, right??" He said gesturing to me and then Mabel.

"It's Mabel." Mabel said simply, with a smile.

"Oh, so it's- what, Darwin and Mabel?" He said, doing the gesturing thing again.

"My name is Dipper." I said, eager to avoid, 'Darwin' as a nickname.

"Oh, got it. Well, I'm your Grunkle Stan!" Stan said with great enthusiasm. "By the way, how old are you kids now?"

"We're seventeen!" Mabel shouted.

"Seventeen and three quarters." I correct, always specific on the numbers. "So, nearly adults."

"Uh-huh..." Grunkle Stan said skeptically with a raised eyebrow. "Well, seventeen year olds, why don't I show you your room."

"You mean rooms, plural, right?" I ask quickly, hoping to finally have my own space.

"Just be quiet and follow, will ya?" Grunkle Stan said irritably before turning and leading us through the Mystery Shack.

Entering the house for the first time, the sights were all new. A large, splintered wooden desk sat pushed off to the left. A red-haired girl in a teal plaid shirt and jeans sat there, legs kicked up on the piece of furniture revealing muddy brown boots. She read a magazine next to the cash register, giving us the dull acknowledgement of a simple "'sup?"

In the gift shop of the place there were various racks of cheap thready tee shirts with questions mark or 'I survived the Mystery Shack', plastered on them.

Tall wooden shelves surrounded
the room with chipping wood. A miscellaneous assortment of items scattered across their expanse, making it feel unprofessional (but what, after all, is professional about fooling credulous people in to buying your ridiculously overpriced and fatuous products?).

Tourists milled about, seemingly fascinated by the imitation and mock-up objects of my charlatan relative. At the back of the room, across from the door, there was a small white vending machine and a staircase leading up next to it.

"This way, kiddos!" Grunkle Stan marched through the sea of visitors, and towards the stairs. Mabel and I glanced at each other, passing confused and unsure smiles to one another.

We chased after our Grunkle, weaving the the crowd as best we could before jogging up the stairs behind him. We walked down the narrow hall of the upper wing, passing twin doors on the left and one on the right. We finally stopped at the third door in the left.

Grunkle Stan threw open the door with vigor and shouted in his hoarse voice, "Tada!"

The room was shaped triangularly, two beds pushed on either sodas of the room with a nightstand in between. A small triangular window stood near the roof, allowing its orange, pink, and yellow mosaic light to shine onto the rough wooden floor.

The beds look old and moth-eaten. There was a thin blue blanket resting on the bed to the left and a pink one on the right. Other than that, the room was just wood; just as everything else in this house is.

Mabel and I walked in, observing our new resting place.

"What'd ya think?" Stan asked.

"It's..." I faltered, unable to explain my hesitancies, however, I didn't have too.

"Wonderful!" Mabel exclaimed, running to her bed and falling onto it, face first. Her happy laughter was muffled by the stiff pillow.

"Great! Why don't you come down and check out the Gift Shop in a bit, and then after work hours end we can have dinner." Grunkle Stan said.

"Yeah, okay. Sounds good." I responded walking over to my bed, resting my suitcase and backpack on it.

"See ya in a few, kids!" Grunkle Stan left us alone, the sound of his heavy footsteps slowly retreating down the corridor.

"This is going to be awesome, Dipper!" Mabel shouted, eyes sparking with joy.

"Yeah, a while three moths sleeping in a threadbare bed with a thin blanket and stiff pillow; probably going to be forced to work in the Gift Shop, and we have to spend our three months of summer in this decrepit and boring town. Absolutely awesome." I said with slight exasperation hinting at my voice.

"C'mon, Dipper. Just give it a chance!"

"Mabel," I sighed, turning to her. "Why do you think mom and dad sent us here?"

"To spend time with our Grunkle!"

"Mabel, they sent us here to get rid of us! They don't want us! We may be going back for the school year, but they sent us here to get us away from them!"

Mabel looked down at her shoes, then back up to me. "Dipper, give them a chance; give Grunkle Stan a chance; give summer a chance. Just for once, try to have fun."

I turned away and silence stretched between is for a long minute. "Okay." I finally said. "I'll try."

"Thank you, Dip-Dot. That means a lot. Now, let's get unpacked and go check out the Gift Shop!" Mabel hurriedly took out her things and began to unpack.

I followed her actions, though not quite as enthusiastically. And so summer begins.
