Chapter-34
Kavya's POV
I removed the tangs of my hair, and let it flow down my back, applied a light pink lipstick, changed myself into the yellow kurti and black leggings, looked myself into the mirror, adjusted my mangalsutra and before leaving I applied sindoor between the partition and went down to see Raj and Kabir were already waiting for me.
Kabir looked at me and a scowl applied on his face. "What happened?' I asked.
'Anand didn't ask anything about your marriage but what if Aarti asks you about it?' he asked.
'I will tell them the truth.' What is there to think about it?
'Okay, let's go.' He told me to take the keys from the dining table and lock the door and picked Raj up. He went forward to place Raj in the car and I locked the key.
As we sat in the car, he typed something on the mobile and put his mobile in the packet and started the car. 'Their house is a minute from our house but we have to take the car due to Raj,' he said and he stopped the car after two houses. I got out of the house. Their house is not big as the farmhouse but it seems big than my apartment.
As soon I came out of the car, an elderly aunty came running towards us. This must be uncle's wife, Aarti. Uncle came and took Raj from Kabir's arms even though Raj and Kabir insisted that it is okay but uncle didn't listen. Aunty hugged Raj tightly and kissed his forehead.
'After so many years I am seeing you face to face, rather than on video calls,' she said making me smile. Kabir pulled her cheeks and there was a big smile on his face.
'You promised me to come every year but you are always busy. I thought I will at least see you, when Raj has vacations, but that time also you are working. I know you own a hotel but come here at least once a year. It had been five years since you came here,' she said, almost scolded him.
'I also missed you so much, Ti,' 'Ti'? Short form of Aarti?
'Nobody calls me that other than you,' she said and looked at me.
'You are Kavya. His friend, right?' she asked and I nodded my head.
"Anand told me about you. I hope he treats you right,' she pointed towards Kabir making me smile. He treats me like I am very important for him.
'Yes. He treats me very well,' I said instead of what was in my mind.
'I am glad,' she said and for few seconds, she looked at my sindoor and mangalsutra but didn't ask anything. It seemed as if something was stopping her from asking that question. Then, she looked at Raj and kissed his cheeks numerous times.
'My little boy has grown so much. You were just five years old when you came here last time,' she said and Raj smiled at her shyly.
'Come on, let's go,' she said and we walked inside her house.
The structure of their house was same as Kabir's farmhouse but---
'This is our hall and kitchen. Beside the kitchen is our room and our son and daughter in law stay upstairs with our grandson,' she said. That means the only difference is they have only one room upstairs.
'They have gone to her parent's house as her mom is suffering from dengue,' aunty told us.
'She will become okay, right?' I asked.
'Yes. Doctor said that she will be fine in few days.'
'So, he has taken leave from the office?' Kabir asked. Maybe Kabir is referring their son.
'Yes,' uncle said and gave us a glass of orange juice. The doorbell rang and aunty went to open it.
'Hey, handsome,' somebody yelled and I saw a woman running towards us. In an blink of an eye, she was in Kabir's arms and I looked at Kabir to see a big smile on his face.
'Hey, princess,' he greeted her and hugged her tightly.
Who is she?
Is she Anand uncle's daughter but Kabir only mentioned his son?
'How are you, princess?' he asked softly.
'Let Kabir have his juice. Thankfully he had kept the juice on the table to reply to a message otherwise the way you lunged on him, juice would have fallen,' aunty said.
'It's okay, aunty,' Kabir said and this girl made a room for herself on the sofa and sat between us.
'Handsome, tell me how are you? How is your restaurant going? By the way did you receive the gift I send on your birthday?' I don't even know his birthday.
'One question at a time, princess.' This is the tone he uses with me.
'I am fine and restaurant is also going well, and, yes, I received the sweater you gifted me and even wore it but I forgot to click a picture. I will click a picture when I will wear it the next time.'
'I wanted to ask you to send picture to me, but I felt odd so dropped the idea.' She pouted.
'You know that you have the right to ask me anything, princessa.'
Princessa?
'Oh! We forgot to introduce both of you,' Aunty said and this is the first time she looked at me with question in her eyes.
'Tanisha, this is, Kavya, Kabir's's friend and Kavya, this is Tanisha, our cousin daughter. Her family died in a train accident, when she was just ten years old. From that day she stays with us and now it seems like she is our daughter only.'
Oh, that means she is the daughter of Anand uncle's brother.
'But this girl thought that she is a burden on us and decided to move out when she was eighteen. After she completed her school, she decided to select a college two hours away from us and never came back. Now she got a job in an IT company in that city only,' aunty said.
'Aunty, it's nothing like that. You know, you both are like my parents.' Tanisha smiled and aunty dropped the topic.
'When you called me few days back, you said you will go to Chennai to attend a friend's wedding. I thought today was your friend's wedding,' Kabir said.
'The wedding postponed and I am glad because, I was able to meet my handsome as the wedding is postponed,' she said and Kabir started laughing. Then after few seconds, she turned towards me.
My handsome?
'Leave all that, let me meet kavya. Kavya, you must be special. He has not bought any of his friends here,' she said.
'Till now I also thought I was special but then I realized that I am not that special as I thought I was,' I mumbled under my breathe.
'What?' Kavya and Kabir asked at the same time.
'Nothing,' I said with a shrug.
'How is your work going?' Kabir asked and they both started talking and I felt so out of place.
I didn't even feel like this when I went to that party with Kabir.
Kabir was always there with me. Even if he was talking with others his eyes were always on me but today all his attention was captured by his princess.
'Anyways, tell me for how many days you are here?' she asked him.
'For few days,' he replied.
'Great, then I will take few days off, to spend time with you. It had been five years since we talked like this,' she said.
'Yes, last time I came you were still in college girl but now you are a working woman.' Kabir said and I noticed a proudness in his eyes.
Of course, he must be proud as now she works in an IT company, she is not a mere school teacher like me.
'Please, try to visit us often, handsome,' she pleaded.
'I will try, princess.'
'How is my favorite boy? Aunty told me about the accident when she called me,' she said to Raj as she went and kneeled down in front of Raj.
'I am fine, nisha,' he said.
'You know, Kavya, this is the first time Raj has called my name without stuttering. Maybe, now he has got used to it. He is so polite that he was not ready to call me by my name. He wanted to call me aunty, but that made me feel like a seventy five year old lady, although I am just twenty-five,' she said and I just gave her a small smile.
'Now, let's have dinner. I am hungry after the long journey,' she sighed.
'I told you, I will give you a car for the time being. After you buy your own car, you can give that back to me,' Kabir said.
'No, handsome. You already helped me with the deposit of my rented house,' she said firmly.
'You said, you will return the money, after you leave that house, right? So this help is nothing, princess. Car will be beneficial for you,' he told her.
I just want to run from here.
'I want to buy car with my own money,' she said and that made him smile.
'One day you will be so rich that you will buy your own car and your own house and then you don't have to stay in a rented house anymore,' he said.
'That's my dream. I will try to change my job, if there is some company with a better salary package,' she said dreamily.
'That's good, princess.'
What are my dreams? I don't have any dream. I never dreamt of a big house or a car. Now, I know why kabir felt so proud.
She wants to achieve everything on her own and me, I don't even have a dream.
I am happy in a rented house and teaching kids.
Was teaching kids my dream?
No, I joined a teaching course as one of my friends chose it, but eventually I got a job and started to enjoy spending time with kids and teaching them.
The friend with whom I started the teaching course, got married in the midway, but I completed my degree and got a job and dad was very happy, as the job will leave a positive impact on my bio data for marriage but I never dreamt of all this, cars and house and big salaries.
Before marriage, I used to give all the salary to mom and never asked anything about it and after marriage also, I used to spend a part of the cash on household expenses, and rest I used to save.
I am a nothing in front of Tanisha who has big dreams and wants it to be fulfilled with her own money.
'Okay, now enough talking. Let's go to have dinner. Tanisha, come in the kitchen and help me,' Aunty's voice bought me out of my thoughts and I saw Kabir talking with her about Raj's accident.
They went into the kitchen and uncle also followed them leaving us alone.
'You are very close to her, right?' I asked.
'Who? Princess. Yes, we both are close,' he said but didn't continue anything further and took out his mobile from the pocket and started looking at it.
I opened Youtube to scroll through some reels but I felt upset and I don't even know why I am upset.
'These are all my favorite,' I exclaimed happily looking at the rice, bhindi fry, matar paneer and paalak dal in front of me. Thank you so much uncle and aunty.'
'Sir asked us to make all your favorite dishes so you should thank him instead of us,' uncle said and I remembered Kabir asking me about my favorite dishes this afternoon. I looked at Kabir with a big smile on my face.
'Thank you, Kabir.' He smiled back at me and after everybody sat down, I started my dinner very happy with the fact that Kabir noticed what I liked and then asked them to prepare it.
'Handsome is very caring. He never forgets my favorite cheese cake and every time we meet, he makes sure that he buys me cheesecake,' Tanisha said and I gave her a small smile and went back to having the dinner.
'How is the dinner?' Aunty asked. Sh!t! I was so busy in eating that I forgot to compliment her.
'Aunty, I am so sorry, I was so busy in having this delicious dinner that I forget to give you a review. I loved it, aunty. It's delicious. Specially, this dal paalak,' I said and took a morsel of rice with dal paalak.
After dinner, the doorbell rang and Tanisha went to open it.
'Order from Zomato,' someone said and left.
'But we didn't order anything.' She seemed confused but then she looked at Kabir and a grin appeared on her lips.
'Cheesecake, right?' she asked and Kabir gave her a big smile.
'Yes, princess. Blueberry cheesecake for you. I ordered it before dinner,' he said. Oh! so that time, that's the reason he was so engrossed in his mobile.
'Come on, let's have it,' she said and went to bring a knife and a big plate.
She opened the box.
'Wow! it's beautiful.' She took a picture of it and started cutting the cake into pieces and asked everybody to have it.
'Take the cake, Kavya,' Kabir said while taking the bite of the cake.
'Chocolate. My favorite is chocolate cake,' I said suddenly and when everybody was staring at me, I felt that how rude it sounded. Why am I angry?
'Sorry, I don't like cheesecake,' I said and tried my best to smile.
'It's okay, Kavya. You don't have to eat it if you don't like it,' Aunty said and I looked at Kabir who was still staring at me. Maybe, he was also confused by my behavior few seconds ago. I sounded angry and everybody noticed it.
I am not like this. I am someone who will eat something I don't even like so that everybody around me will not get upset. I always have methi ka paratha which Nita brings in the school even though I hate methi. When I was young, I always had limca, even though I liked sprite just because dad liked Limca and used to order that only. I even had besan ke laddoo even after I felt like vomiting after having it just because it was Sohum's favorite sweet dish whereas my favorite was gulab jamun then why did I suddenly refused to eat the cheesecake?
