Chapter 19
Stupid Samuel became more confused than ever. Even though he understood some English, his understanding of the language was limited. So when the officers told him he's in trouble and rattled long strings of big words he couldn't comprehend, he put two and two together and figured that he's in deeper shit than he was.
Was he supposed to wait there, sitting on the metal chair, too cold for his bare bum, or was he supposed to stand up, and let them do a body search, which they didn't have to do, since everything he carried was visible to the naked eye?
Stupid Samuel did not realize how long he waited at the station. The next time he opened his eyes, an unfamiliar face looked down at him. He found himself sleeping on a bench, and a blanket draped over his small frame.
"Good, you're awake," said the stranger wearing sunglasses.
The kindness afforded to Stupid Samuel made him think that a nice person had protected him from the elements. Unbeknownst to him, the person who covered him, had only done so to protect their own reputation. So great was their fear of being accused later for subjecting the boy to inhumane conditions by a human rights group, that their actions became incongruous with their thoughts.
"Who...who are you?" Stupid Samuel asked.
"Apparently I'm your guardian," the man quipped.
Stupid Samuel nodded. He shouldn't be surprised that he had a guardian. After all, his mother told him that La Ciudad de los Angeles had an abundance of guardian angels, as expected of the city. So this person must be from Los Angeles.
He wanted to observe the man speaking; however, there's a crowd hovering over them and taking pictures. Stupid Samuel became perplexed. Have these people not seen enough? Why would they torment a boy of his stature, just because he took some coins from the fountain and siphoned some water, which he eventually returned?
The round face of the captain suddenly appeared. He parted the crowd as though he were Moses with his chubby hands. Then, with a loud, booming voice, he said, "Move!! Move away!!"
"I'm sorry, son," the captain said to Stupid Samuel, but his eyes were on the celebrity in front of him. "I didn't realize you're related to Samuel L. Jacobo, because you look nothing like him."
Stupid Samuel was about to protest when his guardian said, "Let's go. We've got a plane to catch."
