I sighed as I grasped the straps of my backpack. I looked upon the small building that was known as Hawkins Middle School, where I would now be attending school.
I turned my head to where my mother's car was, but was now nowhere to be found. I purses my lips as I turned back to the building. Taking in a deep breath, I began to walk towards the entrance.
As I looked around at the kids, their mouths open but I could barely hear anything. I sighed, knowing this was only me.
I barely had any hearing, due to hearing loss when I was at a very young age. I kept my eyes glued to my beige sweater and faded blue jeans as I walked inside the building.
As I took a few steps inside, I finally found the courage to look up at the hallway I was currently standing in. It was as long as I was expecting it to be, but there still stood what seemed like billions of kids.
A few turned to their friends and whispered as I walked by. I tucked a loose stand of my mid-back length hair behind my ear as I turned the corner, almost head-butting someone. As I shifted my blue eyes upwards, they met with another's bright blue eyes.
It was a girl, a girl with a head of fiery red hair. Her mouth opened, but the only thing I could make out of it was 'you're going'.
I mentally sighed before walking around her. Just before I could reach a safe distance away from the girl, she grabbed my wrist and turned me around.
My face must've been redder than her hair, but I couldn't tell as I was too focused on trying to read her lips. I made out 'didn't want to seem mean', but that was about it.
I finally seemed to feel a rush of confidence as I opened my mouth, and let it run on it's own.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to run into you. But I'm afraid I can't really hear you," I spoke, pointing to my ears at the last sentence. "My ears don't work very well."
She raised her eyebrow and tilted her head at my statement, probably thinking I was just joking. I sighed and tried to turn around once again, but she only grabbed my wrist yet another time. She leaned in closer, her lips a little too close to my ear.
"I'm Max Mayfield," she spoke a little loud, but it was loud enough for me to hear. "I didn't mean to come off rude towards you. What's your name?"
She leaned away and waited for my response, which I eventually did.
"Grace," was the only thing that left her mouth. Her lips tugged upwards into a soft smile, causing a wave of relief to flow through me.
Yes, maybe she did come off as a little rude at first, but I seemed to have felt comfort with this girl.
"I can help you around if you'd like," she said into my ear. "I hope we'll get along."
A small smile appeared to have found it's way to my lips as I nodded my head.
"You heading to the principal's office?" I nodded my head in response, causing her to gently ran my wrist and walk me to my destination. I smiled at her action, for I have found a new friend easier than I thought.

I sighed as I watched Max skate on her skateboard in front of me. The word 'skate' reminded me of figure skating, the dream which I have a feeling I will never achieve.
"You okay?" I jumped as I turned to look at Max, who had hopped off of her skateboard to ask me the question. "Something has to be on your mind. You're looking off like you've just seen a dog die."
I take a deep breath before shrugging. "I'm sad. I've always wanted to figure skate." She tilted her head.
"Then go do it," she chuckled, nudging my shoulder.
"I can't."
"Why not?"
"Because of my hea—"
"Your hearing has nothing to do with any of your limbs. It can't stop you from figure skating," she replied, giggling.
Sure, she was right but it wouldn't feel the same.
"I don't know," I sighed. I looked into her icy blue eyes, searching for the trust I had in her until I finally found it. "If only I could walk on the treetops, oh how that would be lovely. If I could, maybe I could figure skate as well."
She hesitated before her lips tugged upwards into a gentle smile. "Maybe you can if you work at it hard enough."
oof this sucked real bad, but i hope you liked it!
