"Where is Atem?"

"I'm not sur-"

"I'M HERE!"

Damn, I should've taken a jasper I would've gotten here faster.

"Where were you Atem?"

"I was taking to um... Kaito"

"Fair enough, do you know why I called you here?"

"No"

"Well Atem, I'm not going to be forever and I don't want to see you ruling Atlantis alone"

He motioned to the guards and several mermaids swam into the throne room including Brooklyn.

She was the only one who's face wasn't red like a tomato. I gave my father a death stare attempting to make myself look hostile.

"DAD! WE TALKED ABOUT THIS"

"Yes and I'm trying to give a push in the right direction"

"More like a shove! You didn't have to bring a bunch of mermaids here to make a point"

"I just though seeing these beautiful mermaids would make you change your mind...you may leave"

They all left quickly most likely due to the awkward tension in the room. I was able to sneak out due to the mermaids obstructing my father's view.

           ------POV CHANGE------

I put my ear to the door and opened it slowly. I hoped the silence meant Kaiba was sleeping. 

Even though he wasn't at work I'm pretty sure he would end it early if he found his life's goal swimming in the water talking to me.

I crept down the stairs, careful to not make a sound as I closed the door behind me with a soft click. I took off my dress revealing my swimsuit underneath and grabbed the bag I had left outside. 

I opened it and one by one pulled out my scuba gear, I was about to strap on my tank when I realized I still had to refill it. I pulled off my mask disappointed yet relieved that I had remembered this time.

I was in the middle of stuffing the gear back into the bag when I heard someone call my name. I turned around quickly but no one was there.

"Hello!"

I quickly covered my mouth remembering Kaiba way sleeping and cursed internally, hopefully he didn't hear. I ran into the water relishing in the comforting warmth until I heard a loud splashing sound.

I looked around and eventually spotted a familiar crop of spiky hair poking out of the surface of the water. 

I swam over but before I could reach him he disappeared only for me to feel someone splash me from behind.

I turned around and saw Atem smiling brightly at me.

"Hey Atem"

"Akai! Where's your scuba gear?”

“Oh um... it’s inside”

“Hey let’s go towards the shore!”

We laid on the sand, our lower halves covered by the endless assault of waves.

We talked about our families and how his father was being very pushy about Atem getting married and how I got kicked out of my house.

It felt like maybe an hour or so when I heard the slam of a door and sudden silence afterward.

Atem stopped talking and looked behind us, I hoped it was someone else but as usual, my luck is as sour as Kaiba's mood. 

“Akai?”

I plastered the most genuine smile across my face and turned around hoping Atem would get the memo to swim off.

“Heey Kaiba, aren’t you supposed to be sleeping?”

His face was in shock like he was having an inner battle with himself and to make matters worse the tide was receding and Atem’s tail was showing more.

“Akai is that a merman”

Atem looked at me and then at Kaiba and looked back at me I guess he was a little irritated because he suddenly raised his voice for attention.

“HEY! Don’t talk like I’m not here!”

I shot Atem a death glare, at least he could act like he was a hallucination or something.

“Atem unless you want to go in a large fish tank you better swim”

I said loud enough for Atem but low enough that Kaiba couldn’t hear.

Atem put a fake smile on his face and swam backward until he disappeared into the ocean. The awkward silence filled with the lapping of the waves took over.

"Akai how did you find that…merman!"

"Kaiba I can explain you see-"

"Don't. Do not even try to freaking lie to me!"

"Kaiba I... okay it was a merman and if you're going to record it don't tell them I was in contact with it. The last thing I want is to be swarmed by news reporters"

He sighed and looked at the sea longingly.

"It's not my first time seeing one but it's been my dream to capture one and see how they live"

I stood up and wrung out my hair, taking out the scrunchie. I walked towards the house and heard Kaiba not too far behind.

"I'm on vacation so maybe I'll let this one slide"

"Thanks, Kaiba"

"I said maybe"

        ------POV CHANGE------

"DAMN DAMN DAMN!"

I was spotted and he was probably going to tell everyone about me. If my dad finds out that I was spotted by another human I'm dead.

"Atem!"

I froze but quickly recognized the voice.

"Hey Kaito"

"Atem did you just come from the surface?"

I looked around to make sure no one else was listening and decided to tell him what happened.

"A HUMAN SAW Y-"

I quickly shushed him, covering his mouth with my trembling hands.

"Atem your father will be upset if he finds out"

"I know but-"

A sudden shout interrupted me and I instantly knew what it was.

"Kaito you have to go, they'll think you took me"

"I can't just leave you here"

"I don't want to get you in trouble, GO!"

His face was hurt and he looked back at me once more before swimming away.

For some reason I didn't want to swim away, I guess my body knew I would be caught anyway.

But when I heard a guard shout, a gallon of adrenaline flooded my senses and before I knew it I was swimming towards the Crystal Empire.

I was only thinking about getting away from the guards behind me that I forgot about the guards ahead. I bumped into a guard and damn… it was Pascal.

"It's time to go back to the palace Atem"

He said giving me a piercing glare, the guards behind me caught up and immediately straightened up when they saw Pascal.

"Sir the king had asked us to bring the prince back to the palace"

"I'll do it, you're dismissed"

They nodded and headed back to the city and we were right behind them. My father will be very upset when he finds out.
