Nothing Left
The woman walked past Lindsey and into the apartment. She turned to face him, her face twisted in near disgust.
"Well?" Lindsey asks, irritated by her intrusion.
"Is that how you speak to your wife?"
"Ex-wife." Lindsey corrects. "You have no business here."
"I just came up here to see how you were doing but you're obviously just fine. I see you've shacked up with your mistress, spending time with your illegitimate child instead of our own children."
"Hang on. You have no right to come in here and talk about Stevie or Jenna that way. I just saw Will the other day, but he's a busy kid. We keep in touch. The same with Stella and LeeLee."
"Fine" Kristen says, huffing and tapping her foot.
"So if you don't mind, I'd like it if you just went back the way you came." he says, shooing her away.
Kirsten's eyes widen suddenly and he just knows she's caught sight of the ring on Stevie's finger. "Already?! You proposed to her?!"
"Don't act so shocked. I love her. Frankly, it's none of your business once again. If you want to talk, we can do it on the phone."
"Will she be the one to pick up?"
"She has a name. I'm getting real tired of your attitude toward her and my daughter. You and me, we've got nothing between us. There is not a single thing left but our kids. I couldn't care less about anything else if I tried."
Kristen is stunned, looking at both of the blondes in his home then back at Lindsey. "Goodbye"
"What the hell was that?" Jenna asked, laughing.
"What's so funny?" Lindsey asked, looking at his daughter.
"Oh come on, your ex wife came in hurling insults at everyone then left. What's not hilarious about that?"
"I didn't think it was very funny" Lindsey said. "She hasn't attempted contact the entire time, she forced me out of the house, which I understand, but she acted as if I didn't exist. Now, she wants to come in and treat the people I love like shit...well, she has another thing coming." He obviously doesn't want to speak about it further so Jenna leaves him alone.
Thankfully, the food comes not soon after and he's sitting it out on the coffee table, grabbing plates and utensils for them all to eat. Stevie has been very quiet and Lindsey watches her as they eat. It's as if she doesn't register the movie or anything around her. Jenna is laughing and joking as usual, not phased by the interaction with Kristen at all. She already saw the worst of her when it came out she was Lindsey's child at Stevie's.
"Stevie, are you alright?" Jenna asks, touching her shoulder. Stevie just nods, going back to eating.
"Please don't let her get to you." Lindsey says.
"I'm not."
"Open up to me."
"She just hurt my feelings but I will be fine. I always am."
"She's out of my life. I will only see her when it's something that has to do with the kids. You have nothing to worry about. You and I are unbreakable." He kisses her knuckles, focusing affection right over her ring. "I promise you."
She smiles a little. "Okay."
"I love you."
"I love you too, Linds."
When everyone is finished, Jenna clears the plates away and thanks Lindsey for the meal. She cuddles into his side on the couch and he kisses her head. "I love you both so much" he says, feeling so blessed to have an arm around two of the most important women in his life.
"I love you too, Daddy" Jenna says. "Thank you for standing up for me. I'm know I'm just as much a surprise to you as I was to Kristen or Stevie but I feel so happy to get to be with you. I always wanted a dad growing up and I was upset you weren't around. I don't think I was angry at you, I just felt like I missed out."
"I'm here now and I know it doesn't make up for lost time, but I'm trying"
"You're doing a great job." Jenna says. "And Stevie is so amazing. She's like a second mother to me." Lindsey turns his head briefly to look at Stevie and sees a tear fall down her cheek. "I love you, Stevie. It means so much to me that you've forgiven me and you still look out for me. This is what I've always wanted. A family, just like this."
"I love you too, sweet girl." Stevie says, reaching out to grab Jenna's hand and give it a light squeeze.
"Can my life get any better right now?" Lindsey asks himself. "I love how close you two have become and it makes all the hell we are going through worth it."
"It sure does" Stevie says, kissing him softly on the lips. He takes her hand, stroking the back of it with his rough calloused fingers.
The movie ends and Jenna leaves the room to take a call on her phone. Lindsey hears only faint conversation but it doesn't sound pleasant. "You okay?" He asks as she emerges from a back bedroom.
"Yeah, I just, I have to go."
"Already? Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I...I'm sorry" she says, clearly flustered.
"Don't be sorry. Come back any time, honey. I love you. Call me later tonight if you're not too busy."
"Does sometime tomorrow work? I don't think I can tonight."
"Oh, well okay." Lindsey says.
"See you. Bye Stevie."
"Bye, sweetie." Stevie says, waving as Jenna walks out the door, her bag and other belongings in hand. "That was weird"
"You're telling me" Lindsey says.
"I wonder what made her rush off so fast? This one seemed real, not like the staged one from the other night. No offense, but your daughter isn't a very good actress."
He chuckles. "No offense taken, but you're right. It was definitely real and whoever or whatever it was made her drop everything and go." Lindsey looked thoughtful for a few moments and Stevie began to rub his shoulders.
"Let's not think about it right now. She would tell us if she were in trouble, right?" She asked and he nods. "We can call her tomorrow morning and see how she is."
"Alright, honey." He turns around and kisses her.
"What was that for?"
"For being you." Stevie smiles, giving him another little peck on the lips. "So you said we could call her tomorrow?" he asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Yep"
"Does that mean my lady is staying over?"
"Well, we just got engaged, I couldn't very well just leave you high and dry, could I?" His hands roam her body, finally handing beneath her butt. He lifts her up a little, her legs instinctively going up around his waist as they stumble, almost tragically, into the wall. He braces her there, kissing her hungrily, eyes open. He loves to watch her, her expressive eyes telling him a lustful, passionate story.
"Wanna go to bed?" he asks, coming up for air.
"Take me" she whispers, kissing him again.
