chapter 89

THAT GUNSHOT WOULD HAUNT VIVIAN FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE.
What would've happened if she didn't take Liam away? What would've happened to Marcie and Judith if they didn't go into the house?
Would Mika have lived? Or would Lizzie have killed all of them? Would she have gone after Judith?
She spent the rest of the day digging two graves. Carol and Tyreese grabbed sheets to cover their bodies and brought them over to the front of the house.
They couldn't stay here. Not anymore. Not with the ghosts haunting this place. The memories that lived in the rooms.
They let Carol bury them. It had to be her.
Liam placed the flowers he picked over the graves. Vivian knew he didn't understand. He kept asking for Mika, wanting to play with her.
But she was gone.
That night, Carol came clean to Tyreese about killing Karen and David. It was news to Marcie, but not for Vivian. She spent the night packing up, grabbing diapers and pecans for them to eat. She didn't want to stay there longer than they have to.
The next morning, they stood in front freshly dug graves. Carol didn't stare directly at the piles of dirt, just looking down at her boots.
Vivian took a few steps forward, placing the little redhead doll on Mika's grave. She didn't deserve to go out that way. She was too innocent, too naive.
They should have seen it sooner. They knew something was wrong with Lizzie, but they placed it as childish ignorance.
But it was so much more than that, and they all paid the price. Mika more than the others.
Marcie adjusted the carrier Judith was placed in on Tyreese's back, making sure the baby was okay before they set off.
Liam held his mother's hand as they made their way out of the fences, back towards the tracks. He glanced back at the house, wondering where his friend went.
"C'mon, kiddo." Vivian lifted the toddler from the ground and balanced him on her hip, wanting to pick up the pace.
She wanted to get away from there as fast as they could.
They walked the track for hours, not stopping for anything. They were ready to find their people, Marcie was ready to find Daryl.
She hoped they went to Terminus.
She learned her lesson. Next time, they need to make a rendezvous point.
The group paused to change the kids around. Tyreese carried Liam while Vivian had Judith in the carrier against her chest. Marcie and Carol carried their bags, wanting to carry their weight.
"We're close." Carol stated, adjusting the bag on her shoulder as they came to another Terminus sign, "I'm gonna get all of you there. Make sure you're safe. But I'm not gonna stay."
Marcie turned to look at the older woman, opening her mouth to ask her why, when a walker stumbled out of the woods.
Half its' face was burnt, and handcuffs were attached to its' wrist.
It must've been a painful death for the poor woman.
Marcie was quick to drop the diaper bag before stabbing the walker in the head. She heard more groaning and glanced to her right, seeing a small herd of walkers making their way towards the tracks,
The young brunette was quick to stand and grab the bag, "More."
The group ran into the woods, hiding behind a bunch of tree roots. Vivian kept the kids quiet while Carol and Marcie kept a look out.
There was too many to kill, and with the kids, they wouldn't be able to run far.
"I'm gonna distract them." Marcie whispered to the older woman, "You get the others out of here."
Carol opened her mouth to speak, only to be interrupted by gun shots.
It also caught the attention of the walkers.
They began to stumble down the tracks, towards the noise. Towards Terminus.
Who was firing? The people of Terminus, or someone else attacking them? And who was more dangerous?
The group stayed hidden until all the walkers were gone. After waiting until the coast was clear, they stepped onto the tracks once again.
"That gunfire, it could have been from Terminus." Tyreese broke the silence,
"Someone was attacking them. Or they were attacking someone." Carol stated,
"Do we even want to find out?" Vivian asked
"Yeah." Marcie nodded, "It could be our people."
Carol agreed, "There's another track due east. It'll get us there. We'll be real careful. We're gonna get answers."
They stepped off the tracks and into the woods again, heading towards another set of tracks that was hopefully clear of walkers.
It didn't take long before the group came across a small cabin. Marcie was tempted to suggest that the children stay behind with Vivian, but was silenced by the sound of a radio. That's when they spotted the car, and a man setting up fireworks,
The group stayed quiet, observing the man.
He could be from Terminus, most likely setting the fireworks off to lure the walkers away,
"Alex didn't get it." The man spoke into the radio as he turned his back to them, "See, I knew the chick with the sword was bad news. Bitch looked like a weapon with a weapon."
They all shared a look. He was talking about Michonne, he had to be. Carol and Marcie nodded at each other before Carol took out her gun and approached the man,
"Yeah, I told Albert I want the kid's hat after they bleed him out."
She pressed the barrel of the gun to the back of the man's head, "Keep your finger off the button and drop it." She ordered,
He held his hands up in surrender, "Listen, y'all don't have to do this. Whatever you want, we got a place where everyone's welcome."
Marcie walked around, aiming Vivian's gun at the guy, "Shut up, man."
"Okay."
"We're friends of the chick with the sword and the kid in the hat." Carol stated.
Marcie tied the man's wrists together with the seatbelt from the car and Tyreese set Liam down before dragging him into the small cabin.
Vivian set the kids down on the porch, keeping them away from the man. She stayed in the doorway, listening to their conversation,
They went through the man's car, searching for weapons they could use. It's now clear that Terminus was dangerous, but they had to get their group out.
If Michonne and Carl were there, most likely Rick would be there, too. Maybe Daryl, Maggie, Glenn.
"They attacked us. We're just holding them." The man stated from his spot on the floor,
"I don't believe you." Carol told him,
"Who else do you have?" Marcie questioned, "Do you know their names?"
"We just have the boy and the samurai, that's it." Marcie narrowed her eyes, not believing him, "We were just protecting ourselves."
"I don't believe you." Carol stated again,
"Look, there's a bunch of us out there in six different directions. There was a lot of gunfire back home. We need to set off our charges all at the same time to confuse the dead ones away. That's good for you, too." The man explained,
"No, it isn't." Carol zipped the bag closed and wrapped the strap around her shoulder, "There's a herd heading toward Terminus right now. We don't want to confuse them away. We're gonna need their help."
"It's a compound." The man stated, "They'll see you coming. If you even make it that far with all the cold bodies heading over."
She ignored his words and headed towards the door. Tyreese reached out and stopped her, "Carol. How are you gonna do this?"
"She won't be alone." Marcie stated, "We're gonna get our people back, no matter what."
Vivian watched them go, guiding Liam inside while grabbing Judith. The man was tied up, and it was two against one.
What could go wrong?
