chapter 59

SMOKE AND GUNFIRE FILLED THE STREETS.

Marcie stayed ducked in a doorway, her knife in her hand. She couldn't do much without a gun, there was no way she was going to wade into the smoke with just a knife.

She watched as soldiers of Woodbury were shot down. One by one.

Vivian stared out into the smoke, hoping to see a familiar face. Rick grabbed her arm, "Go with Maggie."

"But Rick-"

"Go, Vivian!" He barked at her before following after Daryl.

Maggie tugged on Vivian's arm and they ran towards some busses that lined the walls. Oscar helped Glenn onto the bus before guiding Vivian and Maggie next.

Vivian let out a scream as Oscar was shot down next to her, "No!"

He fell onto the grass below, and Maggie aimed her gun to put him down. Vivian stood on the bus and looked around for Daryl and Rick, "Rick! Daryl!" She screamed as loud as she could, no matter how much it hurt her ribs,

Marcie paused at the sound of the woman's voice coming from the smoke. Did she hear her right?

"Marcella!" Her father ran up next to her, "What are you doing? You need to get out of here."

"But-"

"No buts, Marcie. Go to your mother. Protect her." He handed her a handgun, "Go, now!"

With one last look into the smoke, Marcie turned and ran towards her parent's house.

She stayed there, with her mother, sitting in the living room. She kept the gun on her thigh, ready for anything.

The gunshots had faded a while ago. And Marcie doesn't know who won the battle.

There was a knock on the door, with a specific pattern. Marcie and her mother stood and the youngest walked towards the door. She glanced through the peep hole before unlocking the front door,

"Papa." Marcie gasped and wrapped her arms around him,

She pulled away and her mother quickly embraced her husband. Once the greetings were over, he looked between both of them, "The Governor wants everyone to meet in the Arena."

With a pained grunt, Vivian sat down behind a car where Rick was waiting. Maggie and Glenn quickly followed.

They were near the wall, waiting for Daryl. But the longer they waited, the more dangerous it was.

Vivian spotted movement from the corner of her eye and was hoping it was Daryl crawling under the train car.

But it was the stranger that was with the group. But this time she had blood running down her forehead,

Rick quickly stood and aimed his gun at her, "Where the hell were you?" She didn't answer, "Put your hands up." She did as he said, "Turn around." She turned with an annoyed expression on her face as he took her sword from its' sheath, "Get what you came for?"

Glenn stayed with Vivian as Maggie stood and pointed her gun at the woman and moved to stand on the other side of her,

The woman leaned back against the train car and glanced around, "Where are the rest of your people?"

"They got Oscar." Glenn responded,

"Daryl is missing. You didn't see him?" Rick asked and she shook her head, "If anything happens to him-"

"I brought you here to save them." She interrupted,

"Thanks for the help." Rick spat,

"You'll need help to get them back to the prison or to go back in there for Daryl." She stated, "Either way, you need me."

Vivian held her ribs as she stood and walked towards the trio, "Rick... she's right."

He stared at her for a moment before lowering the gun.

Marcie had never been to the Arena before. Andrea had gone during the celebrations a few days ago, but Marcie was more interested in staying with her parents.

Fires were lit and everyone was talking, speculating about what was going on.

It was obviously a meeting. To discuss about the attack that had just happened. The Governor began to approach his people and they all went silent.

There was a bandage over his eye, and his clothes were dishevelled. And he no longer looked like the charming leader Woodbury once had.

He looked menacing.

He glanced around and sighed, "What can I say? Hasn't been a night like this since the walls were completed. And I thought we were past it... past the days when we all sat, huddled, scared in front of the TV during the early days of the outbreak. The fear we all felt then, we felt it again tonight. I failed you. I promised to keep you safe."

Marcie looked around, staring at the men gripping the guns between their fingers.

Everyone was still on edge.

But how did they get in? There's guards on the walls at all times. And what did they want? Food? Weapons? Supplies?

Or just to maim and kill?

Her eyes paused on Merle's form, on the blood that was on his face and stained his shirt.

Marcie's father could've been killed tonight. Her mother could've been attacked. If they were in danger behind these walls, who knows what's going to happen if they were to ever leave.

"Hell, look at me." The Governor wiped his mouth, "You know, I... I should tell you that we'll be okay, that we're safe, that tomorrow we'll bury our d*ad and endure, but I-I won't, because I can't. Because I'm afraid. That's right. I'm afraid of terrorists who want what we have. Want to destroy us!" Marcie could sense his sanity was depleting.

That was it. He was defeated.

"And worse... because one of those terrorists... is one of our own." He spat out and Marcie's eyes widened.

It was an inside job?

The Governor raised his hand, "Merle..." Marcie's heart dropped as guns were aimed at the older Dixon, "The man I counted on, the man I trusted. He led 'em here. And he let 'em in." Merle glared at the Governor as his weapons were taken away from him, "It was you. You lied, betrayed us all."

Marcie didn't believe it. Why would Merle betray the people who rescued him when he was on the brink of death? That man was a lot of things, but one redeeming quality he has is his loyalty.

Merle was pushed towards the Governor while two more of his soldiers brought out another man with a bag on his head.

He was struggling, trying to rip himself away.

Marcie's eyes narrowed as she spotted the leather vest he wore. There were two angel wings sewn onto the back.

"No." Marcie let go of her mother's hand and began to move through the crowd, towards the centre of the circle,

"Stellina!"

"This is one of the terrorists." The Governor ripped the bag off his head to reveal the man underneath, "Merle's own brother."

"Daryl." Marcie whispered,

What she heard earlier... his name being called out... that meant Rick was somewhere, too. The group was nearby.

She couldn't take her eyes off him. She thought he was a figment of her imagination. But seeing the look on Merle's face... she knew Daryl was real. He was in Woodbury. And he was in danger.

And Merle didn't know about it either.

Before she could call out his name, an arm wrapped around her waist and a hand clamped over her mouth, "Don't even think about it."

She was being pulled away, and all she wanted to do was to get to Daryl. These people wanted him dead.

Marcie kicked the air and screamed into the man's hand as he dragged her away. She lost sight of Daryl and began to cry.

He was so close.

And here she was again, being torn away from him.
