chapter 56

VIVIAN SAT IN THE COMMON ROOM WITH THE OTHERS, EATING OATMEAL THAT BETH MADE THEM,

Liam sat at the table next to Carl, playing with the toys that Maggie and Daryl picked up on their run the day before. Carl hadn't touched his food, he hadn't had an appetite lately,

Vivian held the newborn in her arms, holding the bottle to her mouth. She still didn't have a name, Carl was still thinking about it.

The baby has gone through almost a whole can of formula already. She was hungry, and they needed to feed her or she wouldn't survive.

On the table in front of her was a phone book and a map that Glenn had found. They were making a plan on where to go for a run, and what supplies they needed,

"Everybody okay?" Everyone turned their heads to see Rick standing in the doorway that led into the tombs,

He was gone the entire night, no one had seen him since Lori had died, except for Glenn and Vivian,

He was cleaned up, his face devoid of blood, and he had changed his shirt. He must've snuck into the cell block at some point to change,

"Yeah, we are." Maggie answered as he walked towards the group,

"What about you?" Vivian asked, setting the baby's bottle down,

"I cleared out the boiler block." He avoided her answer and her eyes, looking down at his son,

Vivian adjusted the baby to burp her over her shoulder, placing the towel underneath,

"How many were there?" Daryl asked from the stairs,

Rick shrugged, "I don't know. A dozen, two dozen. I have to get back. Just wanted to check on Carl." He patted his son's back,

Glenn stood, "Rick, we can handle taking out the bodies. You don't have to."

"No, I do." He walked over to Daryl, "Everyone have a gun and a knife?"

The hunter nodded, "Yeah. We're running low on ammo, though."

"Maggie, Vivian, and I were planning on making a run this afternoon. Found a phone book with some places we can hit, look for bullets and formula." Glenn informed the sheriff,

"We cleared out the generator room." Daryl continued, "Axel's there trying to fix it in case of emergency. We're gonna sweep the lower levels as well."

Rick nodded, "Good, good." He muttered before heading towards the door,

"Rick!" Vivian called out, the group watching him go. Her eyes went to Carl, who was staring down at his food.

After breakfast, Vivian handed the baby over to Beth before going to prepare for the run. Carl, Daryl, and Oscar went into the tombs to clear more of the prison while Hershel and Beth took care of the baby and Liam,

"Ready?" Maggie asked, leaning in the doorway.

The brunette nodded and grabbed her empty bag, "Let's do this."

Vivian gave Liam a kiss goodbye before the trio headed to the red truck. Glenn drove while Maggie sat in the passenger seat with the map in her lap.

The place that they found, a small shopping centre only about ten miles outside the prison, was almost completely boarded up, but the doors still seemed locked shut.

They might've hit the jackpot.

Vivian kept watch outside while Glenn took bolt cutters to the chains that kept the doors shut. Once he opened the door, birds flew out, scaring the trio.

Maggie and Vivian switched roles, the farmer's daughter keeping a look out while Vivian and Glenn went inside to loot.

Vivian walked over to the baby supply aisle and smiled. She was able to find six cans of formula. It wasn't a lot, but it was enough to last a few more days.

"Glenn, get that duck." Maggie called from outside the store,

"What?"

"Get that duck." She repeated,

"Are you serious?" He asked,

"Yeah. A kid growing up in a prison could use some toys." She reasoned,

"She's right." Vivian stated, grabbing a few toys cars for Liam, and a pacifier for the newborn,

Glenn and Vivian raided the store, grabbing some food and other things they might need. They went back out with their own baskets and showed Maggie,

"We just hit the powdered formula jackpot." Vivian grinned,

"Oh, thank God."

"I also got beans, batteries, cocktail wieners, many mustards." Glenn added, "I 's a straight shot back to the prison from here. Probably make it in time for dinner."

They put the baskets into the truck, "I like the quiet. Back there, back home, you can always hear them outside the fence no matter where you are."

Vivian gave her a small smile and Maggie stared at her, "What?"

"You called it home."

"And where is it y'all good people are calling home?" Vivian froze at the sound of a new, but familiar voice,

She turned to see a man she thought was dead, Merle Dixon, aiming a gun at them. His other arm was a metal contraption with a dagger attached to the end.

It wasn't a figment of her imagination. It really was him.

The three of them help up their own pistols and aimed it at him, "Merle?"

Maggie stared at them with wide eyes and a grin appeared on Merle's bloody face as he lowered his gun, "Wow!"

"Hey, back the hell up!" Maggie yelled as Merle continued to walk towards them, his arms up in surrender,

"Okay, okay, honey." Merle replied, his eyes still going between Glenn and Vivian, "Jesus."

"You made it." Vivian whispered,

"Can you tell me, is my brother alive?" Merle asked them,

After a moment, Glenn nodded, "Yeah."

"Hey, you take me to him and I'll call it even on everything that happened up there in Atlanta." Merle stated, "No hard feelings."

Vivian scoffed, "No hard feelings? Everything that happened to Atlanta was your fault. You were lucky we went back for you."

At the thought of what happened in Atlanta, Glenn's eyes went to Merle's new arm,

"You like that?" He grinned, "Yeah. Well, I found myself a medical supply warehouse. Fixed it up myself. Well, pretty cool, huh?"

"We'll tell Daryl you're here and he'll come out to meet you." Glenn stated,

"Hold on." Merle began to walk closer, "Just hold up."

"Whoa. Whoa." The older Dixon continued holding his hands up, "Hold up here. Hold up. Hey, the fact that we found each other is a miracle. I mean, the sheriff's deputy gave me a map, but I didn't expect it to be this easy."

Vivian's brows furrowed, "Sheriff's deputy?"

"That brown chick that hung around that cop who cuffed me to the roof. She's back at my community." Merle explained,

Glenn, Maggie, and Vivian exchanged a look, "Marcie? Rick told us she was dead."

She couldn't be alive... could she? Rick said she was shot, and in this world, it was hard coming back from that.

And what would Daryl do when he found out?

Merle kept shuffling forward, "Come on, now. You can trust me."

"You trust us." Glenn urged, "You stay here."

There was a switch in his eyes and Merle took out another gun, "No!" The three split up as the bullet hit the window and shattered.

Vivian went with Glenn and once they made sure they weren't hit, they ran around to check on Maggie.

"Hey, hey, hold up, buddy, hold up." Merle was crouched on the group, holding a gun to Maggie's head,

"Let go of her. Let go of her!" Glenn yelled as the two aimed their guns at Merle,

"Put the guns in the car." Merle stated, "Put it in the car."

They had no choice. They had already lost so much.

Glenn and Vivian shared a look before putting their guns into the back of the car, "There you go. Now we're gonna go for a little drive."

"We're not going back to our camp." Vivian stated coldly.

She's not bringing him back to Liam, Carl, or the baby.

"No, we're going somewhere else."
