chapter 54

VIVIAN FELT NUMB AS SHE WALKED THE HALLWAYS, THE BABY CRYING INTO HER CHEST.
Carl was dragging his feet behind her while Maggie led them out of the maze. The gunshot still echoed in her head, the shot that prevented Lori from turning.
The shot that Carl took because Vivian wasn't strong enough.
She wanted to comfort him. But she just didn't know how.
She killed his mother.
Eventually they found the door that led to the cell block. Maggie placed her hand on Vivian's back and guided them to the door that led to the courtyard.
The baby continued to cry and Vivian knew she was hungry. But they didn't have anything for her, no formula or anything.
Her eyes found Rick's as everyone watched them walk out. He looked at her in horror, looking at the baby in her blood-covered hands.
He approached her slowly, dropping the axe in his hands and he shook his head.
Vivian's lips trembled, "I'm sorry."
Rick glanced between Carl, Maggie, and Vivian, "Where is she? Where is she?" He walked towards the door and Maggie stopped him,
"Rick, wait-"
She grabbed his arm and he turned to his son, who was staring at the ground, "No!" Rick began to sob and pace around,
He didn't know what to do, didn't know where to go.
Their leader collapsed under the weight of grief, laying on the concrete and sobbing. Vivian just stood there, not loosening her hold on the newborn, while muttering how sorry she was.
"Let me see the baby." Hershel ordered, and Maggie slowly approached Vivian,
"Viv, it's okay, now. You can let go." Maggie whispered, taking the baby from her.
Once the newborn was safely in Maggie's arm, Vivian fell to her knees. She stared at the blood, Lori's blood, that stained her hands,
"I'm sorry." She continued to cry,
Maggie handed the baby off to Carl and he brought her over to Hershel,
"What are we gonna feed it?" Daryl questioned, taking over as leader since the other's were still in shock, "We got anythin' a baby can eat?"
"The good news is she looks healthy." Hershel stated as he looked over her, "But she needs formula. And soon, or she won't survive."
Daryl shook his head, "Nah. No way. Not her. We ain't losin' nobody else. I'm goin' for a run."
"I'll back you up." Maggie added,
"I'll go too." Glenn backed her up,
"Okay, think where we're going." Daryl told them before pulling Beth off to the side and whispering to her.
Vivian wasn't paying attention. Her eyes moved to Rick, who's eyes were glazed over.
He was heart broken. Shattered.
In the end, he had problems with Lori, but he still loved her.
And now she was gone. And he never got to apologise or make things right.
Vivian watched as he stood and grabbed the axe he had dropped before running into the prison, the others calling his name.
But she let him go.
Liam, who was still clutching onto Beth's leg, looked over at his caretaker. He let go of Beth's jeans and walked over to Vivian, "Mommy? What's wrong?"
Vivian stared at the little boy in front of her, giving him a small smile to comfort him. He didn't understand what was going on, what happened, "Mommy's sad."
That was the first time she referred to herself as his mother.
Liam walked forward and wrapped his arms around her neck. Vivian let out another sob and held him close, trying not to get blood over his clothes.
While Daryl and Maggie went on a run to get formula, Glenn took over. He had Axel and Oscar walk the perimeter, taking control of the walkers who got attracted by the alarms while he dug graves.
Beth and Hershel were taking care of Carl and the baby while Vivian laid in her cell, paralysed with guilt.
And no one really knew where Rick was.
Liam laid cuddled up to Vivian's form, and for as young as he was, he knew she was upset and needed comforting.
They had also lost Carol and T-Dog that day. T-Dog's body was found in the tombs, completely torn apart, while Carol's body wasn't found, but there was a trail of blood led to her head scarf,
Three people. They lost three good people. T-Dog died standing up in what he believed in, and saving the group.
And Carol had grown so strong. It was a shame all that got cut short by some stupid, cocky convict who thought he could take the prison back.
It was dark outside when Vivian moved from her bed. She heard the baby crying with the sound of the door leading into the cell block open in the background and she walked out into the common room, leaving Liam to sleep in their cell.
Daryl and Maggie rushed in and Beth went with her sister to help prepare the bottle for the baby girl.
"How's she doing?" Daryl asked, walking over to Carl who was holding his sister. He took the newborn from the boy's arms snd rocked her softly, "Shhh." He hushed and she soon went silent once he placed the bottle in her mouth,
Vivian had a small smile on her face as she leaned against the doorway. Who would've thought Daryl 'redneck' Dixon had a soft spot for babies.
Marcie would love this image.
"She got a name yet?" Daryl asked Carl,
"Not yet." He answered, "But I was thinking maybe Sofia. Then there's Carol, too. And..." He hesitated, glancing over at Vivian for a moment, "Marcie. Or... Lori." He sighed, "I don't know."
Daryl turned his attention back to the baby in his arms, "You like that? Huh? Little ass-kicker." The group chuckled lightly at the name, "Right? That's a good name, right? Little ass-kicker." He smiled at the group, "You like that, huh? You like that, sweetheart?" He glanced down at the little girl, "Little ass-kicker. You like that, huh?"
Glenn walked over to Vivian, "How are you feeling?"
Vivian shrugged, "As to be expected. Who would've thought Daryl would be the one to lighten the mood."
Glenn smiled, "Yeah." He cleared his throat, "Listen, uh, Rick isn't doing too well. I found him in the corridors, he's a mess. He won't listen to me, but I'm hoping maybe you could try?"
"Me?"
"You're the only one he might even consider listening to. We need him here, you know it, too." Glenn explained,
Vivian sighed, "Fine. Where did you see him last?"
"Heading towards the boiler room." He answered and with a nod, Vivian was off.
She gripped the flashlight in her hand along with a knife and headed into the tombs. Back to where she killed Lori.
Bodies of walkers littered the hallways, more than there was before. Their heads were completely bashed in, brains splattered amongst the walls and cement floors.
He was leaving a trail of bodies.
It was a few minutes later when she found him in the boiler room, where Lori's body was. But as she walked down the stairs, she spotted the pool of blood that was leading into the other room.
It was a lot of blood.
"Rick?"
There he was, standing above a dead walker who's stomach was ripped open.
"Go." He growled out, not turning to face her.
"We're worried about you. Carl's worried about you." Vivian stated, walking further into the room,
"Tell them I'm fine." Rick replied,
"But you're not fine." She walked over to him, "Rick, you need to come back. Your kids need you-",
Rick spun around and pinned Vivian to the wall, pressing his forearm against her collarbone, keeping her in place,
Her head hit the concrete wall hard and tears formed at the corner of her eyes. Rick's face was cold, and covered in blood, but she could see the sorrow in his eyes,
Sorrow she caused.
It was all her fault. And she deserved this.
"I'm sorry." Vivian sobbed, "I'm so sorry."
Rick let her go and Vivian slid until her butt hit the ground. He took a few steps back, staring down at her, "Go back and tell them I'm fine. I'll be back soon."
He left the boiler room and Vivian cried into her knees.
There was no coming back from this.
