chapter 50

VIVIAN SAT ON THE BOTTOM STAIRS, WATCHING LIAM PLAY WITH HIS TOYS WHILE THE OTHERS TOOK CARE OF HERSHEL.

They had slowed the bleeding, but it hadn't stopped completely. She was starting to doubt whether the old man was going to make it. Rick had cut off his leg after all.

Carl walked past her, keys in his hand along with an empty bag and he headed towards the door that led into the dark maze of the prison, "Hey." Vivian stood and stepped around Liam to face him, "Where are you going?"

"I found the infirmary on the map. I'm going to go and get stuff for Hershel." He informed her,

"Alone?"

"I can do it." Carl argued,

"I'm not doubting you." Vivian crossed her arms over her chest, "Look, I know you're going to go either way, but we don't know what's in there. Hershel was with a group, and now look at him. There were dozens of walkers in there, Carl. So... do you really want to go in there?"

The younger Grimes thought about it for a moment before nodding.

"Okay, then I'm coming with you. As backup." Vivian smirked, "Bonnie and Clyde style."

After leaving Liam with Glenn, the duo headed out into the prison. They stayed quiet, peeking around the corners as they followed the map. Vivian made sure to mark their way, so they could get back unharmed.

She made sure to keep Carl away from any bodies, to keep him from suffering the same fate as Hershel.

Inside the infirmary were two walkers, strapped onto bed. The two of them took the corpses out before looking around, "Not much left." Carl commented,

"But anything could help. Let's just clear it." The duo swiped things off the counters, medications, gauze, bandaids, antiseptic, and such.

"Ready, Clyde?" Vivian asked, turning to the Grimes boy.

He nodded and they went over to the door. Carl opened the door and Vivian stuck her head out to make sure the coast was clear before stepping out.

The duo made it back to the cell block in one piece. They went over to the cell where everyone was gathered, holding their bags,

Hershel was on the bed, his leg elevated on pillows, and sheets were dripping with blood. And he was pale. So pale.

"Thought you were organizing the food." Glenn whispered to them,

Carl grinned, "Even better. Check it out." He dropped the bag to reveal all the medical supplies they had collected,

"Where did you get this?" Lori asked, looking up at her son,

"We found the infirmary. Wasn't much left, but we cleared it out." Carl informed them as Carol and Maggie grabbed the new bandages and began to wrap the stump.

"And just the two of you went?"

The younger Grimes nodded, "Yeah."

"Are you crazy?" Lori scoffed, her eyes wide and Vivian knew she was gonna get in trouble for it,

"No big deal," Carl shrugged, "I killed two walkers."

"Alright," The pregnant woman motioned to the older man on the bed in front of her, "do you see this? This was with the whole group."

"He was with me the whole time, I made sure he didn't get near any bodies, dead or alive." Vivian tried to deescalate the situation,

"We needed supplies, so I got them!" Carl argued,

"I appreciate that, but-"

"Then get off my back!"

"Carl!" Beth stepped in, "She's your mother, you can't talk to her like that!"

Lori sighed, "Listen, I think it's great that you want to help but-"

Carl didn't bother listening to the rest of her sentence and left the cell. Lori turned her eyes to Vivian, who was trying not to look anxious, "Look, he was going to go anyway, I just thought if someone else was with him-"

"You don't get to make these decisions." Lori snapped at her, "That is my son. Next time he wants to go off on his own, you get me or Rick. You should take care of your own child instead of looking after mine."

Vivian gave her a nod, "Yes, ma'am." She stated before leaving the cell.

Lori was quick to follow, "Hey," Vivian paused and faced the older woman, "I've seen the looks, the touches, I've heard the comments, but let's get this clear. That is my son and that is my husband. And it's his baby I'm giving birth to."

Vivian's brows furrowed, "I don't know what you're on about, Lori."

Did she like Rick? Yeah, but she knew he was taken. He had a whole family, and she doesn't do that. She wouldn't tear a family apart just to break her dry spell.

She wouldn't go there.

"Do not patronise me. You think he's a big powerful man, he'll protect you and your kid."

She shook her head, "I want his ears, not his heart. You own that. You're his wife, and I'm not looking to intrude. I want to be the Vice President, not the First Lady. You have nothing to worry about." Vivian told the pregnant woman before leaving.

Liam was asleep on his bed as Vivian entered her cell. She tried to stay quiet as she sat down on the lower bed and put her hands on her head.

She understood why Lori was so upset. If she was in her shoes, she would be, too. But what if Carl gone off on his own and something had happened? At least Vivian went with the kid instead of leaving him to go alone.

Not like Lori was good at watching her pre-teen son. Not that Vivian would make that comment to the stressed out pregnant woman.

Carl appeared in her doorway, "Thanks for sticking up for me." He whispered,

Vivian gave him a small smile and nodded, "Hey, I'm glad you took initiative. But don't worry your mom like that, okay? She has enough on her plate."

He nodded and moved to sit next to her, "Do you think Hershel is going to make it?"

She gave him a small smile, "He's strong for an old farmer man. Plus the supplies you got is definitely going to help." Vivian tried to keep his mind off of the subject, "Have you thought of any baby names yet?"

Carl nodded, "If it's a girl, I was thinking maybe... Sophia, Jacqui or... Marcie." He fiddled with the beaded bracelet around his wrist, "If it's a boy... Shane or maybe Jim or Jimmy."

"Not Merle?" Vivian joked,

"Ew." Carl smiled before looking up at her, "Do you miss her? Marcie?"

"Of course I do, why would you ask that?"

He shrugged, "I just feel like we're not even allowed to mention her name. It's like she's already forgotten."

"Hey," Vivian put an arm around the pre-teen, "No one has forgotten her. Especially your dad. She saved all of us multiple times. We will never forget her. And we should mention her more. Tell you what, we'll tell baby Grimes so many stories about Marcie, that even they'll feel like they knew her."

"Really?"

"Yeah, bud." She pulled him into her chest and wrapped her other arm around him,

Someone in the doorway cleared their throat and Vivian turned to see Carol, "I need your help with something."

The two stood, "Is Hershel okay?" Vivian asked,

The older woman nodded, "For now. But this is about something else."

Vivian nodded and turned to Carl, "Keep an eye on him?" She asked, motioning to Liam on the top bunk and the younger Grimes nodded,

The brunette followed Carol out into the yard where she scanned the fences with her eyes, searching for something, "What exactly do you need my help for?"

"Lori's overdue." Carol sighed as they made their way into the alley between the fences, "She had Carl by C-section, she's probably gonna have to have this one the same way. Hershel had a little bit of experience with this kind of things, but he's not gonna be able to do it anymore." Carol came to a stop where three walkers stumbled over to them, the fence keeping them separated, "I need experience. And we have plenty of cadavers."

Vivian squinted at the woman, trying to block out the sun, "Well... that's almost completely sane."

Carol stared at the female walker in front of her, "I need to learn how to cut through the abdomen and uterus without cutting the baby."

"Alright." Vivian sighed and took out her knife, preparing to stab the walker when Carol stopped her,

"I'll do it."

Vivian stepped back and Carol raised the metal post she had in her hand. She stabbed the walker through the eye and it collapsed.

The brunette went to distract the other biters, but turned to Carol first, "Hey, Carol?" The woman turned to her, "You've come a long way."

The older woman gave her a small smile before Vivian went to drag her knife along the chain links, gathering the attention of the remaining biters.

She jogged slowly along the fence line, brining the walkers with her while Carol went through the hole in the fence that they made to get in.

Vivian brought the walkers over to the corner and began to stab them, one by one. Once she was in the clear, she jogged back over to Carol to help drag the body through the fence and over to a guard tower so she was guarded from the hot sun, "You good from here?"

Carol nodded, "Thank you."

Vivian began to walk away but paused in the courtyard to watch the older woman for a moment.

If Lori was going to need a c-section, what were they going to do to stop her bleeding? To sew her up?

Was she going to survive this pregnancy?
