chapter 49

VIVAN'S ARMS WERE CROSSED AS THE MEN PUT WEAPONS THAT THEY FOUND ONTO A TABLE IN THE COMMON ROOM,

"Not bad." Daryl commented,

"Flashbangs, CS Triple-Chasers." Rick listed, "Not sure how they'd work on walkers, but we'll take them."

Vivian watched as Daryl picked up a helmet and tipped it over. Goo dripped out and she wrinkled her nose in disgust, "I ain't wearing this shit."

T-Dog picked up a glove and the same goo oozed onto the floor, "We could boil them."

"Ain't enough firewood in a whole forest, no." Daryl argued, "Besides, we've made it this far without them right?"

"Hershel?"

They all turned to see Carol standing in the doorway, motioning for the older man to follow her,

Everyone knew why. It was for Lori.

"Everything alright?" Rick asked her,

She nodded, "Yeah, nothing to worry about."

Hershel followed her towards the cells and Rick watched them leave. Vivian walked over and lifted up a baton before glancing up at their leader, "Go." She whispered,

Rick shook his head slightly, "If she wanted me to be there, she would've asked for me."

"She thinks she's burdening you with this pregnancy. Now go check on her." She encouraged,

The sheriff stared down at her for a moment before nodding and following after the old man. Vivian turned her eyes to the two other men in the room, who were sharing looks,

"What?"

"Nothin'." Both the men answered at the same time,

Vivian rolled her eyes before walking towards the cells to say bye to Liam. Maggie approached her with some vests they found in the armoury and they took turns strapping them onto each other,

She glanced over at Carl, who was trying on a helmet that was too big for him,

"You won't need that," Rick took the helmet from his hands, "I need you to stay put."

"You're kidding!" Carl scoffed,

"We don't know what's in there. If something goes wrong, you could be the last man standing. I need you to handle things here." His father told him,

Carl thought about it for a moment before nodding, "Sure."

"Great," Rick handed him the keys, "let's go."

Vivian gave Liam one last kiss to his cheek before handing him off to Beth and following the others out.

There could be nothing in those corridors. Or there could be a huge horde.

She held a flashlight in one hand and her knife in the other as they walked down the corridors. Bodies littered the floors, but none of them seemed to be moving.

Glenn stayed near the back of the pack, spray painting arrows on the walls that would direct them back to the cell block.

If one of them got lost, who knows if they would be found in the dark maze of the prison.

Daryl and Rick led the group, checking each room in case of any lingering corpses that could sneak up on them,

Luckily, over the past few months, Vivian built a tolerance to the rotting dead. Brains and guts and blood... that stuff didn't really affect her anymore.

The group turned a corner and Rick paused. At the end, there was a group of walkers turning the corner,

"Go back, go back!" Glenn and Maggie began running first and the rest were quick to follow, "Go back, move!" Hershel tripped over an arm and T-Dog helped him keep his balance, "This way!"

They followed after Glenn and Maggie, until another group of walkers cut them off. Rick grabbed Vivian's arm and tugged her backwards, "Come on, this way!"

The group ran back the way they came and took a different route. But the first group of walkers cut Maggie and Glenn off from the rest of them,

Daryl led them into a room and they all turned off their lights and crouched down the stay hidden, "Where's Glenn and Maggie?" Rick asked quietly,

"We have to go back." Hershel insisted,

"But which way?"

Rick opened the door carefully and they went down the corridor again, searching for their missing group members,

"Maggie? Glenn?" Hershel called out in a hushed tone from behind Vivian, gazing down an empty hallway,

Suddenly, Vivian heard screaming. It was Hershel. Rick pushed past her and ran down a hallway, where Hershel was lying on the ground, a chunk ripped out of his calve,

"No!" Rick shot the walker in the head and they all gathered around the older man.

Maggie and Glenn ran around the corner and Maggie let out a cry as she saw her father, "No! No, daddy! No!"

Walkers followed the sounds of their yelling and Glenn and Rick were quick to scoop him up,

"Daryl!"

The hunter stepped forward, firing an arrow at the walker that was getting too close. As Vivian turned around, she silently cursed as more walking corpses began coming at them from the other side,

"We're blocked!" Vivian yelled,

They ran down the corridor free of any walkers and came across a set of doors that had the handles handcuffed together,

"T! Open the doors!" Rick ordered,

T-Dog ran to the front of the group and used his crowbar to smash the handcuffs and opened the door. Daryl stayed at the back pushing Vivian into the room before they slammed the door shut.

Vivian and Daryl pushed up against the doors, keeping the walkers out as T-Dog ran over and shoved his crowbar through the handles.

"Holy shit." Vivian gasped, finally seeing the wound on Hershel's leg.

Maggie kneeled next to her father, laying his head in her lap and comforting him as he wailed in pain,

"Hold him down." Rick ordered as he took off his belt.

Vivian crouch down on the other side and grabbed his other leg and pressed it down into the concrete and watched as Rick grabbed his hatched,

"Rick..." She whispered and he made eye contact with her,

"Only one way to keep him alive." He stated,

Vivian squeezed her eyes shut as Rick brought the blade down on Hershel's leg, wincing at the sound of flesh and bone being hacked.

Hershel's cries ceased after he passed out. Rick dropped the hatchet, "He's bleeding out."

Vivian opened her eyes and took off her flannel before wrapping it around the stub, trying to slow down the bleeding.

"Duck." Daryl whispered from next to her.

The hunter stood, his crossbow and flashlight raised. Vivian raised her head to spot the group of inmates that were standing behind a gate,

"Holy shit."

Vivian stood, aiming her gun at the men while the others tried to help Hershel.

"Who the hell are you?" Daryl growled out,

"Who the hell are you?" One of them spat back,

"He's bleeding out, we gotta go back." Rick informed them, "Come around here. Put pressure on the knee! Hard! Hard! Push, push!"

Vivian tried to keep her concentration on the inmates in front of her, but it was hard with Hershel bleeding out behind her, "Come on out of here. Slow and steady." Daryl ordered,

The men filed out, one by one. They were all different, some small, some large. Vivian could take a few in a fight, but not all of them. Not to mention they could all be convicted murderers.

"What happened to him?" The first man, the hispanic one, asked,

"He got bit." Daryl answered,

"Bit?"

The man reached for his gun and Vivian clicked the safety off hers', "Watch it!"

"Whoa, easy now. Nobody needs to get hurt." Daryl stepped forward,

Glenn ignored the weapons that were drawn and walked into the back room where the inmates were staying, "You got medical supplies?"

"Woah, where do you think you're going?" The largest inmate asked,

"Who the hell are you people anyway?" The inmate with the gun questioned them,

"Don't look like no rescue team."

"If a rescue team's what you're waiting for, don't." Vivian stated.

Glenn brought in a rolling cart for them to put Hershel on, "Come on, we gotta go!" Rick stated, "Come on, I need a hand here!" Glenn and Rick placed the old man on the table, "T, the door!"

"Are you crazy? Don't open that!"

"We got this." Rick snapped at them,

Vivian shuffled over near the door, ready to help take out either the inmates if they attacked or to deal with the walkers.

T-Dog opened the door and one walker stumbled inside. He pinned it to the wall and took it out before the group exited the cafeteria.

Vivian and Glenn led them, Glenn pulling the cart while Viv searched for the arrows on the wall, gripping her gun in case they ran into more walkers.

Or if the inmates decided to ambush them.

"Stop, stop." Vivian paused at Rick's words and turned to him. He was pointing behind them, and she saw what he was focused on. There were shadows on the wall indicated that the inmates were following them.

"Go, go, go, go, go, go, go!" Daryl urged them forward,

They had gotten to their cellblock and Rick called out to the others, "Open the door! It's Hershel! Carl, come on!"

Carl was there, unlocking the door to the cells, "Oh, my god!"

Vivian stayed back as the wheeled Hershel into his cell and put him onto his bed. There was nothing she could do, and there was too many people in the cell.

All they had to do is stop the bleeding and wait.

Vivian noticed Daryl didn't follow them into the cells and she went to stand out in the common area, where he was waiting for the inmates.

"You shouldn't be here." He stated,

"You can't take on five convicts alone." She replied, taking out her gun,

They could hear the footsteps getting closer and Daryl placed his foot on the bench and rested his elbow on his knee, holding his crossbow up.

Vivian was quick to follow, aiming her gun towards the door,

"It's far enough." Daryl stated as they walked into the cell block,

"Cellblock C. Cell four, that's mine, gringo." The man with the gun replied, "Let me in."

"Today's your lucky day, fellas. You've been pardoned by the state of Georgia, you're free to go." The hunter told them,

"What you got going on in there?"

"That doesn't concern you." Vivian stated,

The hispanic man pulled the gun from his waistband and began waving it around, making Vivian nervous, "Don't be telling me what's my concern, chica."

Daryl lowered his leg and stepped forward, prepared to fire his arrow,

The large man spoke up, "Chill, man. Dude's leg is messed up. Besides, we're free now! Why are we still in here?

"Man's got a point." Daryl added,

"Yeah, and I gotta check on my old lady."

"Group of civilians breaking into a prison you've got no business being in, got me thinking there ain't no place for us to go!" The inmate with the gun exclaimed,

"Why don't you go find out?" Daryl asked him,

"Maybe we'll just be going now." The white inmate stated,

"Hey, we ain't leaving!" It was clear to Vivian that this man was their leader. They did what he said, whether through fear or just stupidity,

T-Dog walked through the door, gun raised, "You ain't coming here either!"

The hispanic man aimed his gun at T-Dog, "Hey, this is my house, my rules, I go where I damn well please!"

"You think one little gun can take all of us down?" Vivian spat at him before Rick came out,

He kept his eyes on the inmates as he walked over to Vivian, "I want you to go back in there, keep an eye on things."

"But, Rick-"

He placed a hand on her arm, lowering her gun, "Please."

She moved her gaze to his face and they made eye contact. With a sigh, Vivian stuffed her gun into her waistband, "Fine." She grumbled before walking back to the cells,
