chapter 25

WHEN MARCIE WOKE UP, DARYL WAS SITTING OUTSIDE THE TENT, CLEANING HIS CROSSBOW,
She stepped out, sitting next to him to slip on her boots, "Thanks, again." She stated, tying her laces,
Daryl glanced and her before grunting which Marcie took as a 'you're welcome' before standing. She went over towards Carol and Vivian, who were hanging up the wet laundry as Liam coloured in his book on the bench,
Vivian smirked at her as the younger girl sat down and grabbed a basket of dry clothes to fold, "Was that Daryl's tent I just saw you come out of?"
Marcie rolled her eyes, "I didn't have a tent to sleep in and he offered."
"Did he offer a spot in his sleeping bag as well?" She wiggled her eyebrows at her,
"Oh, shut up." Marcie threw a pair of boxers at her and Vivian laughed,
"I can't believe I slept in." Lori sighed as she walked over to the girls,
"You must have needed it." Vivian responded, hanging up one of the t-shirts in the pile,
"Feeling all right?" Carol asked her,
She didn't answer, only going to the laundry basket to grab more clothes, "Next time wake me, all right? Especially on laundry day."
"We can manage." Marcie stated, folding the dry clothes and separating them into piles,
"I had an idea I wanted to run by you." Carol spoke up,
"What's that?"
"That big kitchen of theirs got me thinking. I wouldn't mind cooking in a real kitchen again. Maybe we all pitch in and cook dinner for Hershel and his family tonight." Carol offered, "Kind of looking for things to keep my mind occupied."
"That sounds like a great idea, Carol." Vivian gave her a soft smile,
"After everything they've done for us, seems like the least we could do." Lori responded,
"You mind extending the invitation?" Carol asked the other mother, "Would just feel more right coming from you."
Lori raised an eyebrow, "How so?"
"You're Rick's wife." Marcie spoke up with a grin, "It sort of makes you our unofficial first lady."
"Morning, guys. Let's get going. We've got a lot of ground to cover." Rick called out as he walked past the camp.
Daryl walked over and placed a hand on Marcie's back, "C'mon."
Marcie reached over to rub Liam's hair before standing up, "Duty calls, ladies."
Vivian wiggled her eyebrows again and Marcie flipped her off as she walked away. They all gathered around the Cherokee again, the map laid out on the hood,
"All right, everyone's getting new search grids today. If she made it as far as the farmhouse Daryl found, she might have gone further east than we've been so far." Rick stated,
Beth's boyfriend, Jimmy, shyly stepped over, "I'd like to help. I know the area pretty well and stuff."
Daryl and Marcie shared a glance, unsure if they wanted the teenager out there.
"Hershel's okay with this?"
He nodded, "Yeah yeah. He said I should ask you."
"All right then. Thanks."
"Nothing about what Daryl found screams Sophia to me. Anyone could have been holed up in that farmhouse." Shane stated from the passenger seat of the Cherokee,
Marcie raised an eyebrow, "Anybody includes her, right?" She asked, crossing her arms,
"Whoever slept in that cupboard was no bigger than yay-high." Daryl stated, buttoning up his shirt,
"It's a good lead." Andrea stated,
"Maybe we'll pick up her trail again." Rick added,
"No maybe about it. I'm gonna borrow a horse, head up to this ridge right here," He pointed to the map, "take a bird's-eye view of the whole grid. If she's up there, I'll spot her."
"Good idea." T-Dog commented, "Maybe you'll see your chupacabra up there too."
Rick and Marcie shared a confused glance, "Chupacabra?" Rick asked,
"You never heard this?" Dale opened up the gun bag as he told the story, "Our first night in camp, Daryl tells us that the whole thing reminds him of a time when he went squirrel hunting and he saw a chupacabra."
Marcie hid her smile behind her hand and Jimmy let out a laugh, "What are you braying at, jackass?" Daryl snapped at him,
"You believe in a blood-sucking dog?" Rick asked,
"Do you believe dead people walking around?" Daryl responded,
Marcie mentally shrugged. Yeah, he had a point in that.
Jimmy reached for the gun Dale laid out, "Hey hey. Ever fire one before?" Rick stopped him,
"Well, if I'm going out, I want one." Jimmy argued,
"Yeah, and people in hell want slurpees." Daryl commented before walking off towards the stables,
Shane stood and rested his arms on the car door, "Why don't you come train tomorrow? If you're serious, I'm a certified instructor."
"For now he can come with us." Andrea offered,
"He's yours to babysit then." Shane replied and Marcie rolled her eyes,
Once Rick gave group assignments, she watched as he and Shane went off together. That made her a bit nervous since the last time she followed them into the forest, Shane aimed his shot gun at the sheriff.
With a sigh, she walked towards the woods to continue her search.
Vivian held onto Liam's hands as they walked towards the farmhouse. Maggie had stormed off, leaving Glenn on the porch. She lifted the toddler onto the steps and looked up at the Korean, "What was that about?"
Glenn sighed, "I had sex with Maggie."
"What?!" Vivian laughed, letting Liam run over to the porch swing and climb onto it, "Was it good?"
"I thought so. She clearly doesn't." He answered, still staring after the farmer's daughter,
"Awww, Glenny..."
He glanced over at her, "What am I supposed to do?"
Vivian shrugged, moving to sit next to the toddler, "Give her space? If she likes you, she'll come to you."
Glenn nodded, "Good idea."
With that, Vivian left Liam with Glenn before grabbing her car keys and heading out towards the highway. All she could do was silently pray that Sophia was sitting on the highway, waiting for them.
But of course, that wasn't the case. Vivian turned off the engine and got out, a hand loosely attached to her waistband near her knife in case of any threat.
She reached for a granola bar that they left for the little girl before climbing on top of a truck, looking around. Vivian took a bite of the snack, gazing into the forest,
"Sophia!" She called out, "Sophia!"
No response. Not that Vivian was expecting one anyways. She moved to hop off the truck bed when the trees off to the right of her began to shake.
For just a split second, Vivian was hopeful. Then, a walker emerged from the tree line. Vivian slid her knife from its' sheath and jumped from the truck, approaching the biter and stabbing it in the head smoothly.
"C'mon, Sophia." Vivian mumbled, raising a hand to her eyebrows to block the sun from her eyes,
Marcella stood on the edge of the clearing, staring at the farmhouse that Daryl was at the day before.
She went inside to check it, even though Daryl said no one was in there when he found it, there was evidence that someone was there recently. And she was hoping, if it was Sophia, that she made her way back to the building.
Marcie stepped inside, creating some noise to alert anyone or anything that she was inside, "Sophia?" She whispered, "Sophia, are you here?"
After a bit of searching and finding nothing new since Daryl's excursion, she exited the farm house. She spotted a bush full of familiar flowers and made her way over, smiling down at them before picking a few and putting them gently in her bag,
The sound of something trampling through the woods caught her attention and Marcie gasped as a horse trotted past her, narrowly missing her.
Was that the horse Daryl took this morning? And if it was, where was Daryl?
The horse paused at the edge of the clearing, spinning around, clearly agitated. Marcie approached her slowly, a hand raised, "Woah, girl." She reached into her bag and grabbed an apple that Maggie gave them to eat earlier that day, "It's okay."
The horse seemed to have calmed down slightly and was watching her. Marcie held the apple out and the large animal ate it smoothly, "That's it." She spoke in a calm voice before reaching out and stroking her nose, "See? It's all okay." Marcie grabbed the reigns to keep the horse from running off, "Now where did you come from?"
Marcie led her over to the tree line, where she stepped onto a log before sliding one leg over the saddle. It brought her back to the old days, when she used to go horse back riding with Lexi in elementary school.
Lexi would like the group Marcie was with now. She'd get along with T-Dog, Glenn, and Vivian. And she used to love kids. She'd hang out with Carl, Liam, and Sophia all day long.
It was strange for Marcie to think that she had a whole different life away from Lexi now.
Marcie encouraged the horse forward, heading towards where she came from. Hopefully, Daryl was okay and the horse ran off, but she knew that probably wouldn't be the case.
Back at the farm, Vivian pulled up to the camp, not saying anything as she got out of the car, which told everyone what they needed to know.
No Sophia.
She sat down on the bench, drinking some water and watching Liam play in the grass. Rick came over and sat next to her, "You okay?" She asked, glancing over at him,
Rick sighed and leaned his elbows onto his thighs, "Shane thinks we should move on and head towards Fort Benning."
Vivian stared at him for a moment, "And leave Sophia behind?"
The leader stared at the toddler in the grass in front of them, "If it was Liam... what would you do?"
"I'd say 'screw you guys' and stay to look for him. If you guys go... so be it. But I wouldn't leave until I knew what happened." Vivian answered honestly, "And I'm sure if it was Carl out there, you and Shane would do the same."
"He says.... my good intentions are making us weaker, that I can't make the hard decisions for the good of the group." Rick stated,
"You have empathy, so what? Rick, I was there with you in Atlanta, you were ready to make the difficult decision, but you pulled away from that. All these decisions you're making, they're all hard decisions. Any decision in this world could mean life or death and you can't help that." Vivian ranted,
He shook his head, "But maybe I'm holding on to a way of thinking that doesn't make sense anymore. He says it's math, basic survival... How much fuel, how much food, how much ammo. Not much room in that equation for being soft. It's pretty simple when you start thinking of life like that."
"Hey." Vivian reached under his chin and moved it so he could look at her in the eye, "None of us were prepared to be living life this way. You are making the best decisions you can with the information you have. I don't see soft in that." She let go of his jaw, "Shane's just... he's ready for the harshness of this new world. He can brush it off easier than the rest of us. And that's good, we all need to do that. But we need time to do that."
"You don't think he's good for this camp?"
"I think he's dangerous."
"Walker. Walker!" The group heard Andrea yell, staring out at the tree line,
The both stood from the bench and Rick reached for his gun, which was missing from his belt. Vivian grabbed Liam and rested him on her hips, "Just the one?" Rick asked,
Andrea dropped the binoculars, "I bet I can nail it from here."
"No no, Andrea. Put the gun down." Rick ordered her as the men grabbed their weapons,
Shane walked forward with a pickaxe, "You'd best let us handle this."
Rick held his hand up towards his friend, "Shane, hold up. Hershel wants to deal with walkers."
"What for, man? We got it covered." Shane began jogging towards the field, Glenn and T-Dog on his heels,
"Dammit." Rick grabbed his gun from the RV and sprinted after him.
Vivian handed Liam off to Dale before following, easily catching up to the boys.
She silently thanked her track experience.
They five of them came to a stop a few yards away from the walker, who looked a lot like their other campmate, covered in blood and dirt, "Is that Daryl?" Glenn asked,
Rick raised his gun and he came to a stop, glaring at the sheriff, "That's the third time you've pointed that thing at my head. You gonna pull the trigger or what?"
They all let out a sigh of relief and Rick lowered his gun, "What the hell happened to you?" Vivian asked, approaching him.
A shot resonated through the field and Rick pulled Vivian back as Daryl fell to the ground, "No!" Rick yelled,
Vivian broke away from Rick's arms and they both kneeled down beside Daryl, who groaned in pain. She checked the wound, which luckily was just a graze on the side of his head, "I was kidding."
Shane and Rick lifted him from the grass and wrapped his arms around their shoulders. Vivian grabbed Daryl's crossbow and followed behind the men,
"Oh my God. Oh my God, is he dead?" Andrea asked as she and Dale ran over,
"Unconscious. You just grazed him." Vivian spat at her,
"But look at him. What the hell happened? He's wearing ears." Glenn exclaimed,
Rick grabbed the ear necklace and ripped it from the now unconscious man's neck, "Let's keep that to ourselves."
T-Dog grabbed something from Daryl's waistband at the back of his pants, "Guys, isn't this Sophia's?"
They all paused and turned, seeing the doll T-Dog held up.
What the hell happened out there?
