Chapter 7
The following hours were rather boring. I didn’t know how many times they needed to film a simple three minute conversation, but so far they were up to ten. Even if the shot was beautiful and it evoked emotion and everything, the directer would call “Cut! And reset!” and everything would fall back to the way it was a few minutes before. Ridiculous. The scene wasn’t even an action scene or something entirely entertaining, it was just... talking. By my third cup of coffee, sixth sketch of a flower, and several munchies later, Lisa fluttered into the room announcing lunch.
“Oh hallelujah.” I said, putting all my things back in my bag.
“You weren’t bored, were you?” My mom asked, knowing full well I felt like my brain was slowly melting.
“Not at all, mother. I could just feel my brain slipping out of my ears.”
“That’s disgusting.” I shrugged.
“Don’t matter when it’s true.”
“Use proper grammar, sweetheart.”
“Reason number eleven why I don’t like my mom being a journalist.” I said, pushing myself off the chair and stretching my limbs.
“Oh please, you use me to your full advantage. Especially when you took AP Language and Composition.” My mom reminded me as she gathered her things and we followed Lisa out of the Zone and into the lot.
“That’s reason number six why I do like my mom being a journalist. I have separate lists, you know.” Mom merely shook her head.
“And the rest of your lists?”
“Confidential.” I looked over at her and smiled innocently while she shook her head again in an ‘oh-my’ fashion.
“How you doing, babe?” An Australian accent rang in my ears as I felt an arm sling around my shoulders, which caused me to lurch away in shock.
“Oh my gosh, Carson, never ever do that again. You scared me half to death.” I scolded, punching his arm.
“Ow, that hurt.” He pouted, rubbing the spot that I hit.
“Oh stop being a baby, I barely touched you.” He shrugged and draped his arm back around me again.
“So-o. How was watching in the Zone?”
“Boringest thing I’ve ever done.”
“Boringest isn’t a word, hun!” I heard Mom call behind her. How could she even hear me from where she was?
“I know, mother! But saying ‘the most boring’ isn’t quite as easy!” I called back to her.
“Well, don’t worry about it being boring anymore. My scenes are after lunch, meaning prepare for the gun show.” Carson flexed and, while it was super impressive, I punched him in the gut.
“Self flattery will get you nowhere with me, my friend.” Carson grabbed both my hands and looked straight into my eyes.
“Wait. We’re friends, Cam? You mean it?” He looked so sincere and puppy-like.
“Sure, what ever.” I pulled my hands away and started walking again, flashing him a quick smirk. He jogged back up to my side.
“I feel so,” he sniffed dramatically, “special that I’m your,” sniffle, “your friend.” He started fanning his face with his hand as he then proceeded to sob into my shoulder.
“Oh my gosh, get off of me. You’re a big boy, Carson. No need to cry.” Carson merely lifted his head and sent a dazzling smile my way. I shook my head as we entered into a different tent where crew workers, actors, costume, hair and make up people surrounded long tables. A food buffet was set up along the farthest wall and the smells wafted in my nose and I was faintly aware that I was drooling.
“Shall we?” Carson stuck out his elbow for me to take. “You look like you’ve been starved.”
“I have been. One does not simply get up at four a.m. and not be super hungry for the rest of the day.” I linked my arm with his as we headed towards the food.
“Cammie!” A pair of strong arms looped around my waist and yanked me back into a hard chest. The wind was momentarily knocked out of me as my body was spun around to be wrapped up in the arms.
“Um. Hello?” I croaked, still attempting to breathe.
“I’ve missed you so much.” Hearing the voice, I realized it was James and I tried to laugh as he pretended to sob into my hair.
“James... I can’t... breathe... help?” He loosened his grasp and then pulled me out by the shoulders.
“Are you and Carson dating?” James looked into my eyes with complete seriousness.
“James! No! We were getting food.”
“Good. Because he didn’t ask me. Let’s go.” James turned me around, draping his arm around my shoulder as Carson watched the entire scene, laughing his head off.
“How are you so hyper?” I asked James as he bounced along in the line.
“I don’t know. Coffee, Redbull, sugar, acting. They all coincide.”
“You’re weird.” I stated as he handed me a plate.
“The ladies dig it.” James said, winking.
“Hey, what scene are we filming after lunch?” Carson asked, loading fajitas on to his plate.
“I think it’s Ava and George’s scene. I don’t think we’re on until a bit later.”
“I heard my name, why are you talking about me?” Ava appeared out of nowhere, grabbing a plate and cutting in between the two boys.
“Rude, Ava. That’s real rude.” James said, giving a death glare I was all-to-familiar with.
“Sorry, babes.” She placed her hand underneath James’ chin and smiled.
I moved down the line, loading my plate as they all conversed about the next few scenes and what was happening. My eyes wandered the seats, looking for Mom so I could go pretend I belonged here, when James nudged my shoulder.
“Do you see Mom?” I asked, scanning the room.
“She’s over there with Finch. Why?”
“See you later!” I waved my fingers as I started heading over to where I saw her.
“Whoa. No. You’re sitting with us.” James said, grabbing my shoulder.
“Umm... I don’t think I’m cool enough.” I said, glancing over to where I saw Carson and Ava sitting and Gemma and Liam coming to join them.
“Well, you’re definitely cooler than sitting with Mom and Finch. Come on, it’s not like you don’t know everybody.” I bit my lip as I reluctantly followed James to the table where it looked like everyone was in a heated discussion about something, which seemed to have happened quickly. They had only been sitting for a few minutes, how could an argument have happened so soon?
“No, Liam! That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard!” Carson raised his voice, waving his fork around.
“Are you kidding me, mate? I’ve thought about this a lot. You know I’m right.” Liam spoke with such confidence, barely raising his voice at all.
“Whoa, what’s the problem, boys?” James asked, sliding into the seat next to Gemma.
“Liam thinks that the Green Goblin is a better villain than the Penguin.” Carson clarified, throwing his hand up in the air.
I nearly burst out laughing. They were having a heated argument about comic book villains. Oh man, these boys were brilliant.
“I don’t even know what they’re talking about.” Gemma admitted, shrugging her shoulders nonchalantly.
“Seriously?” James and I said at the same time. Gemma looked completely baffled as if we accused her of some great crime.
“What? A green goblin? A penguin? I mean, how are these villains? Penguins are cute!” The entire table sat silent for a moment before everyone erupted into laughter. Well. Everyone except Gemma. She just sat and stared blankly at all of us.
“The Green Goblin is one of the most famous villains from Spiderman, while the Penguin is a really, really creepy villain from Batman.” I explained. I thought this girl was in the movie industry, the least she could know was the many films of these specific superheroes.
“Wait.” Liam said, “You know your super-villains?” He asked, skeptically. I scoffed.
“Of course I do.”
“Alright then,” he leaned forward, folding both hands on the table. “Who’s the better villain? Penguin or Goblin?”
“Oh no you don’t! I am not settling this argument. This is between you and Carson.”
“No, it’s not. Ava already said that she thinks the Green Goblin is better.” Carson said, bitterly. “And she’s wrong. Penguin, mates. I’m telling you.”
“See, this is argument is weird though. I mean, one is Marvel and the other is DC. Both have their pros and cons.” With that, all of us delved into a lengthy discussion about comic books. Comic books. I mean, something was seriously wrong with us, I’m sure. Both sides were trying to sway me to their team, especially when James sided with Carson and it was two-for-two. The Penguins and the Green Goblins both proved excellent points on how each made an excellent villain. Penguins terrible childhood and how he was locked up and everything, and then Green Goblin with his ruthless nature and blowing things up. Gemma remained indifferent, picking away at her salad as we argued one of the silliest debates ever. But it was just so much fun.
“Cammie, join our side, you know we’re right.” James said and I narrowed my eyes.
“Yeah, come on Cam. The Penguin is the best villain.” Carson bit into his sandwich, trying to look intimidating.
“Don’t listen to them, Cam. You know, deep down, it’s the Green Goblin.” Ava said, her soft voice interrupting. She had remained mainly silent during the argument, but she kept her cool like Liam. So confident that they were right.
“Camille.” Liam placed his hand over mine and it felt like my heart stopped.
“Yes, Liam?”
“Think about it. The Green Goblin carried on to his son. The whole revenge thing, the darkness of that character. His name even sounds menacing. All the Penguin was, was a creep. The Green Goblin is the real villain.”
“I... I...” My words seemed to stop forming as Liam stroked my hand with his thumb, probably knowing full well that I was practically hypnotized by his touch and accent. “Green Goblin is the better villain.” Liam instantly released my hand and threw his hands in the air.
“Yes! Yes, he is! Woo! We did it, Ava!” The two of them high-fived and cheered, while I saw James slump in his chair.
“Not fair! He seduced her into thinking that!” Carson yelled.
“He did not!” I shot back, my face turning pink.
“Who cares what methods I used? We won.” Liam boasted.
“I have to say, that was pretty smooth.” Ava said, eying Liam with approval.
“I was not seduced into my decision! I actually believed the Green Goblin was better!” I emphasized, hoping someone would believe me.
“We all know of Liam’s seducing powers, Cam, it’s alright to admit that you fell under the spell.” Carson said. “Because then we know that if you had a little more time, you would have said Penguin.”
I buried my face in my hands to hide the blush overtaking my face. “You’re all a bunch of idiots.”
As I said that, a loud buzzer rang off in the room and everyone at the table groaned.
“Oh gross, work.” James groaned.
“Come on, you lazy butts. Let’s go.” Gemma said, pushing out of her chair and brushing her Disney hair off her shoulder. Ugh, how does someone look perfect every second of the day? Everyone got up reluctantly and headed out.
“Bye Cam, thanks for joining the dark side.” Ava said, following Gemma and Carson out the door.
“You’re still a loser for not joining your brother though.” James said, sticking his tongue out. I returned the favor by hitting his arm.
“They held a better argument, sorry bro.”
“Sure that’s the reason.” James mumbled, doing a quick eyebrow wiggle and then looking over to Liam.
“Shut up! That was not the reason!” James and Ava laughed as they left.
“Are you sure about that, love?” Liam asked, in a low, husky tone, shoving his hands in his pockets as if he wanted to look all innocent about the situation.
“Oh shut up and go to work.” He smirked at me, the look of success beaming.
“See you later, Camille.” He turned and left with the others, and when he was far enough away, I mumbled to myself, “Gosh, I hope so.”
