Cold Shoulder - Spock

You hissed as you shook your hand, stepping away from the heavy crate of testing tools you just dropped on your fingers. You rubbed them to get the pain to leave while you looked around the science testing center for the only person who got on your nerves. You are a pretty chill person, it took a lot to make you upset let alone dislike someone. But Spock sure knew how to press your buttons.

You spied him over at a desk looking at some files that Scotty needed him to approve. He and Jaylah wanted to work on creating her reflective shield on a grander scale and that meant sectioning off a small part of the ship for them to mess with. And it was really bothering the Vulcan. You could tell. His shoulders were slack and his back bent over the desk. His hair was a bit mussed, making your heart betray you with a sudden urged to walk over and fix it. Instead, you walked over to him, crossing your arm as you leaned against his desk.

"Has the Scotsman added another request to his experiment?"

Spock jumped. Your eyes widened as a hint of green brushed over his cheeks and ear tips as he looked up at you. He swallowed and glanced away before meeting your gaze.

"Indeed. It seems as though he wishes to test the devices against extreme temperatures as well. " He returned his gaze to the files as if dismissing you.

You chewed on the inside of your cheek. "I guess I can see how that would cause some issues. Is there anything I can do to help?"

He may bother you, but you weren't going to be rude. Alas, he seemed to not like your offer. He placed a hand in his lap but not before you saw him clench his fist. Your heart dropped and your face felt red.

"No, I believe it would be best if you found another unsuspecting officer to talk to. There is nothing you can do that I cannot do myself." He glanced up at you but only for a moment before looking back down.

Did he not hear me pinch my fingers earlier? You thought as you refrained from rolling your eyes.

They still throbbed slightly. You pushed off the table and cleared your throat. "Forgive me for the interruption." You turned and left him. You paused and turned on your heel, pointing to the box you brought in earlier. "The crate of supplies you need are here."

Spock internally winced at the sound of your heels clicking angrily down the hall after leaving. He stood and caught his reflection in a darkened interface screen and about rolled his eyes. Fixing his hair, Spock walked over to the box of supplies you brought and sifted through them. He couldn't get the look your face made at his reply out of his head. He wasn't quite sure what brought him to be so sharp with you but he almost couldn't help it. Perhaps if you hadn't surprised him so suddenly or warn your hair like you did then maybe his heart would not have gone wild at your presence.

Spock paused in his contemplation when he realized something was missing from the box. Squaring his shoulders, he picked up the list of supplies that accompanied the box and strode out of the room to go find the missing object. Spock paused at the door and turned to pick up Scotty's request file. Without a moment more of contemplation, he accepted Scotty's request and mentally hoped he made the right decision.

You huffed as you tried to get Spock out of your mind. That arrogant, stuck up, unfeeling, attractive man. Who are you kidding, he isn't a man, he's a Vulcan. You rolled your eyes. Why do the attractive ones alway shave to be jerks? You turned down a hallway that seemed eerily quiet. Be that as it may, you were lost in your mind and pressed forward, despite the lack of foot traffic and the apparent signs of renovation. Without a current task, you found yourself enjoying lone walks in the hall to clear your mind of the one lead science officer who seemed to stay there.

Spock looked down at the list in his hands, reading the names of the supplies off in his head as he walked. As the words swam before his eyes, the only thing he could focus on was your face and the fact he yearned to find you and apologize. Letting his feet take him by memory to the hall of storage rooms, Spock also missed the signs of desolation and repairs that would deter any attentive crew member. It wasn't until he bumped into a small figure that he drew his eyes away from the page in his hands.

Turns out his wish was granted. You let out a gasp and Spock reached out and caught you before you fell. The both of you stilled as your eyes met his. Spock about pulled you to his chest in hopes of reminding his coarse words to you, but you came to your senses first and pulled away from him. You both cleared your throats and stepped back. You rubbed your suddenly cold arms and looked around. The awkward silence was broken when you both spoke at the same time.

"Forgive me-"

"I'm sorry, I-"

You let a smile slip but not without shaking your head. "I wasn't paying attention. Excuse me as I go bother someone else." You let out a breath and rubbed your arms again, feeling very cold.

Spock opened his mouth and reached out to stop you as you turned to go but the sound of large containment doors banging shut clipped his comment off. His blood ran cold as he watched the hall you came from become closed off. He turned and found where he came from also being shut off. He let out a breath and found that he could see it, the white puff slowly disappearing.

Something was wrong.

You stared at your blocked path and worry set in. Turning, you found Spock looking around as if the two of you weren't trapped in a cold part of the ship. Behind him, you spied the thick blast barrier had closed off that end too. Your hands started to shake and your teeth began to chatter. You hugged your arms to your chest as your nose started to lose feeling. Stepping forward to grabbed the searching Vulcan's attention.

"S-s-s-spock?" Your voice was weak and thick with a mixture of fear and frustration.

Spock pulled his eyes away from the stripped walls and bare wires to find you shivering on your feet. "It seems as though we have walked into Mr. Scott's experiment."

Your heart dropped and eyes widened. "What?"

Spock took a step forward and laid a hand on your arm, his other hand having dropped the list rested atop yours. "I think it wise to search the storage rooms for ways to warm ourselves. If what I signed is any indication of what is to come then we will need to find warmth." You let him take your other arm, gently angling you to a storage room. "We will also need to find a means of communicating to the Captain that we are indeed preoccupied and not shirking our responsibilities."

You let out a single laugh, your breath clouding around you. "Ha! Or scaring other officers."

Spock paused but showed no emotion as he turned to you. "You are cold. Come, warm up first then we can continue this conversation without fear of you collapsing."

As if he was your mother. You just glared at him until he turned and opened one of the storage room doors. You peeked in behind him and your heart fell. It was empty. Quickly, Spock checked the other ones, silently hoping that one had at least something to warm you with. He hated the idea of you becoming numb and possibly ill. One of the last rooms he checked had discarded decorative pillows and seat cushions. Spock looked behind him at you and his heart hurt; you were shivering terribly now and he could see your nose and ears turning red.

Ignoring your apparent disdain at his closeness, Spock helped you inside, closing the door behind him. You looked at the odd pile of unwanted cushions and let out a cold laugh.

"You h-h-honestly think this w-w-will help?"

Spock raised a brow. "If you wish I can leave you out there to fend for yourself as Mr. Scott lowers the temperature to below living standards as he tests the elements of space on those ship reflectors."

You hugged yourself tighter and turned away from him, moving to make a little fort out of the measly supplies. "Whatever. Just don't get mad at me if you find my presence disruptive and a waste of space."

Spock's face fell at your words. He must have really hurt you for you to act thusly. He always admired your cheery disposition and sweet words that accompanied your beautiful smile. Spock knows he is no expert when it came to expressing feelings but he isn't blind when a woman gives him the cold shoulder. So, instead of biting back like he initially feels to do, he took a breath and thought his words out carefully.

You sat down and leaned against a pillow against the wall, not daring to touch the cold metal for fear of sticking to it. Your toes and fingers, along with your nose, seemed to slowly disappear as they lost feeling. Your jaw was starting to grow tired and sore as your teeth continued to chatter. You tried to keep yourself distant from Spock but glancing at him and seein ghim starting to be wffected by the cold made you almost regret being rude. But you left him enough pillows. You're ticked, not cruel.

Spock took the remaining pillows and placed them in the corner beside you and sat down. He pulled out his communicator and tried to contact anyone but the connection was lost. So he recalibrated it and set it aside to let it think as he turned to you. He wanted to clear things up and see you smile again. Plus he had a warmth idea but needed your cooperation.

"(Y/n)," Spock called just above a whisper.

You glanced at him and he sighed; your lips were turning blue.

"(Y/n), please forgive me. I was unfeeling and crass. But I do not think my mindless actions warrant your death."

You narrowed your eyes at him and shook your head a bit. "What are you talking about?"

Without warning, Spock reached over and pulled you onto his lap. You tried to resist but his warmth was agonizingly tempting. You watched as Spock pulled the rest of the pillows you were using and piling them on the two of you. Surprisingly, you felt a bit warmer, but you still hesitated to lean into him; you were still mad at him. Spock picked up his communicator and tried again, but it was still recalibrating. So he leaned back on his pillows and closed his eyes, his arms loosely draped around you. You leaned away from him, your body shivering as you waited for him to answer.

It was quiet for a few moments, the both of you trying to stay warm. Then Spock spoke, his eyes still closed.

"It seems I have the proclivity to push away those I care about the most. I was harsh to you, unknowingly at times, because of my feelings for you."

Your breath hitched. You stared at him with a new understanding, suddenly seeing the Vulcan shivering himself. Gently you let yourself lean into him a smidge, still hesitant to let your feelings go.

"You still didn't need to be so mean," you whispered as you felt his arms wrap around you a little tighter.

Spock peeked, looking down at you, your eyes meeting his almost apologetically. "I understand and for that I am sorry," he reached up and stroked your cold cheek then pressed your head gently to his chest, "your reaction to my behavior was to be expected." He closed his eyes again but kept your head cradled to his chest.

You felt him shaking along with you and you suddenly felt terrible with how you acted toward him. You reached up with one of your numb hands and stroked his cheek.

"I suppose I was rude too."

He didn't react and you became worried. You sat up a bit and wrapped your arms around his middle. His own arms wrapped around you but weakly. You looked up and let your inpulsive actions take over. You placed your cold lips on his, kissing him lightly before snuggling your face in his neck.

"Stay awake Spock, we need to stay awake," you whispered as you felt yourself warm up a bit more but your eyes started to droop.

Spock's lips twitched with a smile as he kept his eyes lazily open, his arms wrapping around you more securely as he too started to become warm. But soon the two of you fell asleep, the cold slowly consuming you. The communicator beeped and Scotty finally got the SOS message Spock sent and turned off the experiment. You awoke in Spock's arms as the two of you heard the Scotsman yelling something about poor timing for a romatic rendezvous.

Spock looked down at you and kissed your forehead before a mass of crewmen came in to help the two of you out to the sick bay to warm up. But you made sure to never leave Spock's side, not that he made that easy for you making sure to keep one of his hands on your arm, back or in your own hand at all times. From then on Spock made sure to express himself better and you let yourself fall in love with the one person you didn't think you ever have feelings for. But the both of you had a hard time falling asleep if not in each other's arms.
