Chapter 23

Like all things, fireworks season does eventually come to an end, but unfortunately, it doesn't come with an automatic fix to all their problems.

Castiel stands in front of Dean's bedroom mirror, just looking at his face. He can't quite pinpoint what's off about it; just that he looks wrong. It must be the lack of sleep catching up to him. Even midday naps during their Destiel Disney Days — Dean's cheesy name, not Castiel's — can't make up for hours of sleep lost to the nightmares, a near nightly occurrence.

Castiel can't help but feel bad about it. He wakes Dean up every time, because the boy refuses to let him sleep on the couch to give him a full night's sleep for once. At least Dean does a good job at hiding that anything's wrong. Sometimes even Castiel forgets that he's probably just as tired, fighting to keep his eyes open at all times.

Suddenly, Dean yells, "Cas, look at this!" from the bathroom, his voice barely audible over the sound of the shower.

"Look at what?" Castiel yells back.

The only answer he gets is a vague, "C'mere!" and Castiel can't not go look at whatever it is has Dean so impressed

Castiel knocks on the bathroom door loudly. "Dean?"

"Dude, come look at this!"

Castiel slowly opens the door, and though he can't really see Dean, he does notice the boy's silhouette behind the cloudy shower curtain. "What am I looking at?"

"Hold on —"

There's a pause, and Castiel fiddles with his hands awkwardly until Dean flicks the shower curtain open. His naked body is covered in suds, and Castiel has to put in a conscious effort into keeping his focus on the boy's excited smile instead of his genitals.

"Look!" Dean shows Castiel his hand, his thumb and pointer finger making a circle with a thin filmy layer of soap between them. He holds it to his mouth, and a bubble barely begins to form before it pops. Dean groans in frustration. "It's too dry out there. Come closer."

Castiel cocks his head in confusion but does as he's told, looking into the shower but trying to keep a little distance so he doesn't get too wet. Dean presses his fingers together to prepare for another bubble, which he successfully completes. It floats around for a few seconds, but pops in the stream of the water.

"Isn't that awesome?" Dean asks excitedly.

"I'm not quite sure what just happened," Castiel says slowly.

"I blew a bubble out of soap!" Dean says. "I didn't even know that was possible!"

Castiel raises an eyebrow. "You called me in here just so I could watch you blow a bubble out of soap?"

"Yes! What, were you not impressed?"

Castiel rolls his eyes. "I'm marrying a literal child."

"You love it," Dean says with a grin.

"Yeah, okay, I'm leaving," Castiel says, and as he starts to go, he takes one last look at Dean's crotch because he just can't help himself.

"But bubbles!" Dean whines.

Castiel shakes his head at the boy and walks out of the room. He turns around as he closes the door, and he's a bit disappointed to see Dean holding the shower curtain in front of his body as he peeks out of the shower, just for something to hold on to. He didn't even get one last look. How unfair is that?

Castiel sits down on the couch, his legs swinging back and forth carelessly. Dean will be out in a minute, and they can go do something together. Until then, Castiel's just going to sit here.

And sit here.

And sit here.

"Okay, I'm bored," Castiel says, pushing himself to his feet.

He goes back to the bedroom and grabs his phone, plopping down on the bed. What should he do now, that'll take up the five minutes max that it will take for Dean to get out of the shower?

Castiel opens up his music app and scrolls through his playlists. He never likes to shuffle all his music, because it'll go from something like Ed Sheeran's ballad "Perfect" to some headbanger like "Back in Black" by AC/DC, so he puts them in playlists of similar songs labeled just by numbers, and plays Russian Roulette every time he picks one to listen to.

And, as luck may have it, the first song that comes on in lucky playlist 13 is Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up," the biggest meme song in the world. He's about to skip it — why the hell does he even own this song? — but instead decides this is a perfect song to dance around the room to.

He over-exaggerates the lip syncing, jumping up and down and making up all kinda of dance moves, until finally, it reaches the chorus —

And then Dean yells from the shower — "I'm never gonna give you up! Never gonna let you down!"

Castiel doubles over in laughter. "How can you even hear it?"

"Are you kidding?" Dean asks. "I bet they can hear it in Russia. That shit's loud!"

"Sorry!" Castiel turns the music down, then continues his weird dancing at a much lower intensity until "Never Gonna Give you Up" is over, and then "Sunglasses at Night" is over, and... Why the fuck is Dean still in the shower?

Castiel turns off the music and puts his phone back on his bedside table. He walks over to the bathroom door but hesitates outside of it. Is this weird? Should he just leave Dean to shower in peace? It feels like it's been ages, though.

Knock knock knock.

"Are you knocking on the door or am I hallucinating from sleep deprivation?" Dean asks loudly.

"I'm knocking on the door," Castiel says. "What's taking so long?"

"Um..." Dean doesn't give him an answer.

"Dean?"

"I like bubbles?" Dean says sheepishly.

Castiel has to laugh. "You're such a child. Come on, Dean. I'm getting bored out here. Cheesy '80s tunes aren't cutting it."

"Then come blow bubbles with me!"

Castiel rolls his eyes, but he doesn't even try to hide the smile on his lips. "I'm not blowing bubbles with you, Dean. Come on. Shower like a man."

Dean scoffs. "I'm sorry, I thought we didn't do gender stereotypes in this house."

"Oh, I am so sorry," Castiel says sarcastically.

"I have no idea what you just said," Dean says. He shuts the shower off, then asks, "What was that?"

"Nothing," Castiel says dismissively. "Welcome back to dry land."

"You're just jealous," Dean says. "You wish you had my bubble skills."

"No, I really don't," Castiel tells him. "In fact, when I take my shower when you come out of there, I'm going to get through it without blowing a single bubble. Crazy, I know."

"You're just a buzzkill," Dean whines, but his voice changes to be a bit more flirty when he says, "But why wait 'til I come out before you take your shower?"

Castiel rolls his eyes. "Goodbye, Dean."

Dean groans. "Fine, be that way. See if I care."

Castiel chuckles as he walks away, heading to sift through Dean's clothes for something clean to put on as he waits for Dean to come out. He's so distracted, he doesn't even notice Dean's out of the shower until he feels his fiancé slap his ass.

"What?" Dean asks with a grin when Castiel turns around, eyebrows raised in a really? look. "You just left it out there and thought I wasn't going to smack it? You should know me better."

Castiel shakes his head at the boy and scoops up his clothes to carry to the bathroom, careful to keep his back to his fiancé so he doesn't notice the slight smile on his face. How Dean manages to go from goofy, soap-covered toddler to hot, ass-slapping fiancé in a matter of minutes will never cease to amaze him.

Castiel kicks the bathroom door shut with his foot, barely paying it any mind as he drops his clothes on the counter. He glances back, about to lock the door, as he always does, but decides against it. Maybe Dean will want to pay him a visit. It would definitely be in character of him.

But, Castiel finds as he's finishing up his shower, Dean must have more important things to do than try to catch a peak. He only came in for a minute, after asking for permission, and only to brush his teeth — and took Castiel's dirty clothes on his way out. Castiel doesn't complain, of course, but he is a bit surprised. He expected more.

Castiel sifts through the pile of clothes he brought with him, only to find he doesn't have any underwear. He could have sworn he grabbed some... He doesn't spent long wondering about it, though; just slides his jeans and t-shirt on and heads to the bedroom to go find some underwear elsewhere — and, sure enough, the pair he grabbed is lying on the floor. He must have dropped them.

"Hey," Dean says, mouth full of food. He's sitting on the bed, a paper bowl in his lap, and something white covering his face. Is that...

"Are you eating straight up whipped cream?" Castiel asks, not sure whether to be amused or disturbed.

"Mm," Dean hums, holding up a finger as he finishes eating. "Yeah, I figured out that if you put chocolate sprinkle jimmy thingies on your whipped cream, it tastes really good."

Castiel gapes at him. "I'm sorry, you what?"

"No, try it!" Dean holds out the bowl to him.

"Uh, no, I will definitely pass on that," Castiel says, waving it away.

"I know it sounds weird but it's awesome!" Dean insists. He scoops some out and brings the spoon to his fiancé. "Open up and taste the joy."

Castiel presses his lips in a firm line and shakes his head.

"Come on!" Dean whines.

Castiel crosses his arms.

"Okay, just remember, you brought this on yourself," Dean tells him, and before Castiel can ask what he means, Dean sticks his hand against Castiel's stomach, tickling him. Castiel collapses to the floor, laughing too hard to stop him.

"Stop!" Castiel squeaks, kicking his legs around as if he'll be able to hit Dean.

To his surprise, Dean just says, "Okay!"

Castiel sits up and stares at him for a moment. "That's it? That's all —"

Dean sticks the spoon in his mouth mid sentence, and Castiel has no choice but to taste it. Dean starts cackling, pulling the spoon away and tossing it on the bed, surprisingly landing right in the bowl.

"Oh, wow, that's actually not bad," Castiel says.

"No, see, you think it wasn't bad," Dean says with a smirk, "But I now know you're ticklish, and don't expect me to forget it."

"Oh god, save me," Castiel whispers.

Dean just laughs. He picks up the underwear Castiel must have dropped and asks, "Were you looking for these, by chance?"

"Yeah, actually," Castiel says, taking them from him and turning to leave. "I'm apparently more of a klutz than I thought. I will be right back."

"Where are you going?" Dean asks.

"Bathroom to put them on," Castiel says. Isn't that obvious?

"Ah, come on!" Dean whines. "I wouldn't have taken them if I knew I wouldn't get to see you put them on."

Castiel chuckles. "Why didn't I guess that it was you who took them?"

Dean just shrugs. "I guess you have too much faith in me, Cas, because you should know how low I'll scoop to catch a peak at you."
