And now, Chapter 100.
Dean and Castiel are packing up the drive home when Castiel gets a text from none other than Jack Kline.
Jack: Are you in LA?
Castiel: Yep.
Jack: How long are you in town?
Castiel: We were actually just about to leave, but we're driving home so there's no rush.
Jack: Do you and Dean want to come to my house?
Jack: If you don't and you just want to go home, that's totally fine.
"Hey, Dean," Castiel says, tapping him on the shoulder.
"Hmm?" Dean hums, looking up from the suitcase he's almost done packing.
"Do you want to go to Jack's house?" Castiel asks.
"Jack...?" Dean prompts.
"Kline."
"Oh!" Dean shrugs. "Sure. Why not?"
"Cool. I'll let him know."
~~
Dean and Castiel wait on Jack's doorstep for him to let them in. It only takes a few seconds, which means he's probably been waiting impatiently for them to show up, which is kind of cute.
Peanut the pug starts jumping around when he sees them, his short tail wagging enthusiastically. Castiel steps inside and kneels down to pet him, and Peanut stands with his front paws against Castiel's knee and licks his face.
"Hi, buddy," Castiel coos. "I've missed you too."
Peanut just licks him again.
"Hi, Jack, since Castiel's ignoring you," Dean says.
"Hi, Dean," Jack says.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to ignore you," Castiel says, looking up at him. "I just got distracted by your dog."
"That's fine," Jack says. "I'm usually distracted by my dog too."
Castiel stands up, and Peanut presses himself against his leg. Castiel chuckles and boops his nose.
"Ooh, I made brownies!" Jack says. "Not 'cause you were coming, but just 'cause I'm finally home long enough to enjoy them."
"Been busy?" Castiel guesses.
"Oh, you have no idea," Jack says with a grin. "Well, actually, you probably do because this is kinda your life too, but it's insane!"
"You sound like you're enjoying it, though," Castiel remarks. God knows he never did, but to each their own.
"It's awesome," Jack says. An exacted Look appears on his face as he remembers something. "Did you hear that my newest single peaked at 27?"
"On Billboard or iTunes?" Because a peak at 27 on iTunes isn't exceptionally good. It's not bad, but Castiel can't remember the last time he didn't reach the top five on there. It's probably been since his first single.
"Oh, Billboard 200," Jack says. "It reached number 1 on iTunes after just three hours!"
"That's awesome," Castiel says. "I haven't been online at all lately, so I'm going to sound really stupid, but what's your new single? Something from a new album?"
"No, it's from my old one," Jack says. "I'm supposed to record my new album this week, though, so that'll come out soon — or at least the first single."
"I can't wait," Castiel says, and he really means it. Jack is such a good musician. He can't wait to hear more of his music.
"You don't have to stand in the doorway," Kelly calls from further inside the house.
"Oh, right, come in," Jack says, leading them to the kitchen.
Kelly is leaving against the kitchen counter, a half eaten brownie in her hand. She smiles and waves, but finishes chewing before she speaks. "Hey, guys. I'm glad we caught you in time."
"Me too," Castiel says. "I'm not looking forward to the drive home."
"I can imagine," she says. "Where are you going after this? Massachusetts or... South Carolina?" It's clear from her tone that she's not sure she has the right state for the last one, and she's right — she doesn't.
"I think we're going to Massachusetts," Castiel says, glancing up at Dean to confirm this.
"Unless Lucifer calls on the way back and tells us he wants us to go to South Dakota," Dean says.
"Would he actually do that?" Kelly asks. "Just out of the blue?"
"Oh, hell yes," Dean and Castiel say in unison.
"Well, I've only met him a few times, but I'm not really surprised," she says.
Dean sneezes suddenly, and, his hand still over his nose, he asks, "Where are the tissues?"
Jack chuckles and hands him the box, and Dean blows his nose, then washes his hands, because it apparently wasn't a very clean sneeze.
"Oh, crap, you're allergic to cats," Castiel says. "I totally forgot about that."
"Want me to put the gate up so he can't come in the kitchen?" Jack asks.
"Nah, I'll just suffer," Dean says. "Where even is your cat?"
"In the living room," Jack replies, pointing to the room next to them.
"Can I go visit him?" Castiel asks.
"Of course," Jack replies, leading him to the cat.
When it becomes clear that Dean is going to come with them, Castiel subtly falls behind him and takes out his phone, recording this. Maybe it'll make its way online — not from his accounts, obviously, because those are inactive as fuck, but maybe from Dean's or Lord Tyrion's.
"And there he is," Jack says. "Everybody's favorite cat."
Lord Tyrion meows at them from his chair.
As a joke, Dean kneels down in front of the cat and says, "My lord."
Lord Tyrion meows again.
Dean reaches over to pet him, but, after a few seconds, he has to look away to sneeze again.
"I really don't understand why you thought this was a good idea," Castiel remarks.
"I can't ignore my favorite Instagram friend," Dean says. "I don't care if it kills me." But when he sneezes again, he changes his mind and stands up. "Never mind. I'm gonna go wash the cat off my hands."
Castiel chuckles and ends the video, putting his phone away before Dean notices. He'll show the video to Dean later and maybe convince him to post it.
"Hey, Tyrion," Castiel says, sitting down next to the chair and stroking his fur softly. Lord Tyrion purrs contently.
"He's so spoiled," Jack says, amused.
"A king deserves nothing less," Castiel replies. "Hey, how'd you know we were here, anyway? I don't think we've told anyone but Lucifer."
"Oh, I recognized the restaurant in the video that's been going around," Jack says. "And the hotel looked kinda familiar, too. I just kinda guessed."
"What video?" Castiel asks.
"Oh, you don't know?" Jack glances at his mother, as if silently asking her what he's supposed to say now.
"No?" Castiel says uncertainly. What viral video of him is going around this time?
"It's just the girl we saw outside the restaurant," Dean says, walking back in the room. "It's really less about you and more about me, anyway — just like the picture that's going around where I flipped off the paparazzi." With a satisfied smile, he adds, "People are having such a hard time trying to figure out whether they should like me or not."
"You're the true meaning of chaotic neutral," Castiel says, amused.
"I think people are starting to like you, though," Jack says. "At least a little bit more than they used to."
"Really?" Dean lets out a dramatic sigh. "Man, now I gotta go start some more drama to get people to hate me again."
"I will literally break your phone if you do that," Castiel says.
"I think it's cute that you think I need a phone to start drama," Dean says with a smirk.
"Welp, I'm screwed," Castiel says.
Peanut jumps up on Dean, his front paws resting on his leg. Dean looks down at him, frowning.
"I think he likes you," Kelly says.
"Wow, even dogs like me now," Dean says. "Where did I go wrong?"
~~
The four of them are sitting around the kitchen table an hour later, munching on some potato chips as they chat.
"So, Castiel," Kelly says, "Do you have anything new coming out soon? You're in LA, so I'm guessing that's what you're working on?"
"I actually recorded my whole album yesterday," Castiel says. "It probably would have come out pretty soon, but Lucifer wants to make a music video, so we're gonna do that first."
"What type of music video is it?" Jack asks. "Like one of the special effects ones, or a story, or a concept?"
"It's a story," Castiel says. "Or it will be, if we can pull some strings to film in public places privately."
"What's it about?" Jack asks.
"Just kinda the life of a gay couple in the '60s," Castiel says vaguely, not wanting to get into the details — especially not with a 17-year-old.
"Is it following the storyline from your book, then?" Kelly asks.
"Yeah, actually," Castiel says, a bit taken aback by the fact that she knows his book. "Did you read it?"
"I did," she says. "It wasn't quite what I expected, but it was really good."
"Thanks," Castiel says with a smile that he hopes is convincing enough that she doesn't realize he now feels very awkward because she read his smutty book.
Dean must be thinking the same thing, because he asks, "Jack, did you read it?"
"I started to," he says. "It just got a little..." He trails off, not sure how to finish the sentence — which makes it sound worse than it is, honestly, not that he's picked up on it.
"Not safe for work?" Castiel finishes for him. "Yeah, sorry about that."
"Don't be," Jack says with a small smile. "I'm sure I wasn't your target audience."
"Yeah, it didn't really dawn on me that people I actually know could read it," Castiel says. "I kinda just did it 'cause I wanted to give people something else to talk about after the Grammys."
"I don't blame you," Jack says. "People can be really mean."
"The unfortunate reality of the internet," Castiel says.
"So what's the rest of your album like?" Kelly asks him. "A lot of singles? Lot of ballads?"
Castiel hesitates, so quickly they probably don't notice, before asking, "Anything I say now stays between us, right? I'm trying to keep it all a secret until it comes out."
"Of course," Kelly says.
"There's only one real single," Castiel says, referencing the song about Twist and Shout. "Everything else is just acoustic.
"I might release one of them as kinda an opener to the new album, though, but it won't make it very far with just a guitar." That song would be the one about the terrorist attacks from chapter 84. It'll be the first thing he puts out, as kind of an explanation to his fans about why he's been out of the public eye for so long, but he's sure it won't go much farther than their ears and a bunch of clickbait articles.
"And that one and another song are new, but everything else is just from old recordings on my phone," Castiel finishes. "It's kind of a throwback album, just tying my whole career up."
"That sounds like it's gonna be interesting." Jack says, and he really seems to mean it.
"'Tying your career up'?" Kelly repeats. "So is this your last album?"
"I think so," Castiel says. "I've already reached my peak. I've been out of the public eye for too long to pick up where I left off. I think I'm just gonna try to move on and live a normal life with my husband-to-be." He's not dumb enough to think a normal life is possible, but after a few years, he's sure things will calm down a little bit. By the time he's 50, he'll be able to go places without being harassed by the paparazzi — hopefully.
"Twitter seems to think you haven't reached your peak," Jack says.
Instead of mentioning how that isn't true and that much of stan Twitter is violently opposed to him, he says, "Twitter is always wrong. I mean, they hate Taylor Swift, and she's still selling a million albums in the US alone in the first week. They love Nikki Minaj, but she's got nothing compared to Cardi B's streams."
"Yeah, actually, I've noticed that," Jack says. "How does that work?"
"The general public is a lot different than Twitter," Castiel says with a shrug. And, judging by how well rap is doing these days, they've got a hell of a lot less taste than Twitter does.
A/N Surprise, I had nothing planned for this chapter so it's actually just twice as long as a normal one and centered on my adorable muffin Jack. Also I applied for a job today and I know they're hiring and I think I'm gonna get it which is gonna be great when I finally have money but it'll also probably mean I won't be able to write as much so I will update you guys as I learn more
