Chapter 3

"Why can't you just ask me," Alannah asked, her previous disposition of nonchalance back in its place.

"I don't trust you to tell us the truth," Zaria said deliberately, no small amount of anger flashing in her eyes.

She was still standing. Danique was not. She was slumped in her chair, seeming to try to close herself off from the world.

Alannah closed her eyes, concentrating on the futures that included that sitting position. There were a lot. Most likely, her nerves were acting up and she was in pain. The other main futures were emotional pain. She opened her eyes, pink again, and realized she'd missed something from Aurora's story.

Whatever. She knew what would happen.

Alannah stood up and walked over to Danique. The entire world seemed to pause to look at her. Well, their group. She definitely had a flare for the dramatics. Everyone stopped looking when she sat in the chair furthest from the table. The placement of the chairs worked well.

"You should have Luca look at that. He might be able to do something," the tall girl murmured.

"Wh-" she looked up. Yes, that was definitely pain of the physical sort in her eyes, "Right. You'd know if he could help."

Alannah nodded, "If you ask, he can help at least some. Even without training. The question is whether or not you ask."

"Wouldn't he have to... touch everywhere I'm burned to heal it?"

"No," she scoffed in response, "Who told you that a healer had to touch the injury to heal it?"

"M-my mom," Danique whispered.

Ah, yes. General Tella. Alannah had never met the woman, but her visions told her enough about the twins' mother to assure the dreamteller had absolutely no doubt what she thought of the strict general. It wasn't a very pleasant opinion.

"Luca is more powerful than your mom," she said, her voice still hushed, "And nicer."

Danique looked down at that. Alannah glanced over to see the murderous look on Zaria's face as she watched the interaction. Oh, she was protective.

Alannah grinned at the angry girl and uncoiled out of the chair. Her grin faded into a simple look of amusement as she started walking.

"Where are you going?" Luca asked quietly as she walked by. The entire room fell silent anyway.

"What? I can't shower? Danique got to," the once again red-eyed girl faked a pout.

Zaria rolled her eyes, "Just go."

Poor thing. Zaria and Alannah were in the same room. Hopefully neither would wake up dead. That was Hoku's thought process as Alannah left the room. Alannah knew that wasn't going to happen. Not unless she seriously screwed up with Danique. Currently, the only close future where that happened was one where Luca's powers backfired and cause even more damage to the poor girl's ravaged body.

But that future... it was so faint, barely even there at all. The absolute only way that would happen would be if that was the day Luca was poisoned. And the only way that would happen- actually, that would start a nearly endless chain.

Alannah closed her eyes and sank against the bathroom walls after she'd gathered her clean clothes from the closet. The sinewy girl rubbed her head, trying to get some of the visions out of it. She didn't care how many as long as she got just the slightest bit of relief.

She used her only physical power to move the air, get rid of some of the stuffiness.

It helped some, so Alannah stood up and worked on figuring out how these stupid spelled baths were supposed to work.

Callum had watched as Alannah left the room. She was good at hiding it, but she seemed tired. It had been a long day, but something told him from the way Aurora had collapsed at the barrage of information, Alannah had trouble upholding her mask of nonchalance for too long.

"Aurora," Callum said, getting the girl's attention.

"Yeah?" she asked as she looked to him.

"How did you- can you control what you see from someone's mind?"

"I... look for things. The more specific the better for it to work well and not have something like that, on a smaller scale, happening."

"So what did you look for?" Sora asked.

"Anything about the twins. I didn't think it through well," Aurora grimaced.

"You also didn't know she could see the future. How far along did you see?" Luca inquired.

"It was only a few years I think. The twins didn't look too different in any of them. But... I think there were multiple futures. And not just a few. Hundreds. Maybe thousands," her blue eyes flashed with something like excitement as she said that.

"How is that possible?" Hoku asked, brows furrowing.

Sora scoffed, "How are the twins possible?"

Callum and Aurora actually looked to the twins like they expected an answer.

Zaria shook her head while Danique shrugged.

"Yeah. I guess some people are just born weird," Hoku grinned.

"Or powerful," Luca muttered.

"Why can't they be both?"

"Alannah isn't really weird," Aurora started, "She's just... well, she may be seen as odd by some people, but she's normal for most standards. And she's definitely normal for someone who can see so many futures and know what causes each."

"I'm not sure I trust her," Sora admitted.

Aurora sighed, "Me neither. Even though I didn't see anything in her mind that made me think she'd cause any of us any harm. There was one thing, vision, future, whatever, in her mind where she and Zaria got into a fight and she managed to get a bruise in. But that was it. There was one where Zaria killed her though."

"I'm not sure a bruise counts," Zaria drawls, "We could have been sparring for training purposes. As for me killing her, I'm sure I had a reason."

"You looked mad. In both."

"Hah. That's supposed to indicate anything of importance? Zaria is always mad," Danique attempted a smirk at her sister, but the effect was ruined by rings of shadow that were suddenly under her eyes.

Zaria gave her a look, but any jab she would have shot at her sister was erased when she saw the exhaustion. "It's late and it's been a long day. We should sleep. Tomorrow will be just as long of a day. Especially if our schedule is as crammed as everyone is making it out to be."

The rest nodded or murmured their agreement. They stood and walked as a group to their assigned dorms. Either thoughts distracted or the events instilled some trust in the group as no one sidled away from Aurora. She'd noticed that with no small amount of relief and her whole body seemed to relax as they walked to their rooms.

Aurora and Zaria heard grumbling, then, louder, a curse, from the bathroom. The girls traded glances. Zaria tilted her head, signaling Aurora to check on their third roommate.

"Umm... Alannah," she asked after she'd padded to the door and knocked, "Are you ok?"

They heard heavy footsteps as Alannah stalked to the door and opened it, glaring. She was fully clothed, and her hair wasn't wet. Her clothes, however, did have wet splatches on them.

"You look like you got in a fight with the shower and the shower won," Zaria noted, smirking when the taller girl turned the full force of her glare on her.

"These stupid spelled things are worthless," she growled.

Aurora peered around her to look in the bathroom. It wasn't just her clothes that had lost to the shower. The floor was soaked too. The blue eyed girl grimaced, stepped around Alannah, and carefully creeped to the shower, avoiding puddles. She spent about thirty seconds messing with the knobs and turned to instruct her taller classmate.

"This one," she pointed to the knob on the left, "Is hot. The other is cold. You'll get more pressure if you use both at once."

Alannah grabbed her shoulder and walked her out, seething.

"You act like you've never been in a bathroom with running water before," Zaria scoffed.

"Probably because I haven't," she growled, then slammed the door.

Quiet slam, Aurora noted.

It was a slam Sora barely heard, though, sitting in their closet as she searched through the messy thing to find something clean to sleep in. She should be neater in her unpacking. Earlier, she hadn't wanted to miss anything, so she tossed everything in the small walk-in closet and went back downstairs.

By the time she had found something, changed, straightened her clothes out, and took the four steps required to reach the actual room, Danique was asleep. Her breathing was even and her face relaxed. Sora didn't think she could look relaxed awake. The red-head watched her roommate for a few seconds, trying to come up with an opinion of her.

Danique was quiet, contemplative. She seemed to have a quick mind but the extensive scarring made Sora believe there had to be some nerve damage holding back her physical potential. Even still, Sora had no wish to get in a fight with the girl.

Danique stirred, turning over in her sleep, and Sora turned away, too. Her bed beckoned her. She collapsed on it, not even bothering to cover herself with the blankets, and was asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.

Luca couldn't sleep. And it wasn't because the two boys in his dorm were snoring, either. It was odd, he'd decided, being here. There was so much power in this building. And in the numerous other buildings the walls of the school encapsulated.

Those walls... the outer most wall was almost thirty feet tall. The middle and inner wall weren't too much shorter. Maybe five feet. And the floating islands? They must have been nearly one hundred-fifty feet off the ground. A fatal fall for most power weilding beings. Even those that weren't human. Even those whose endurance and durability far outmatched that of a human.

Maybe certain breeds of warrior water nymphs mixed with fae immortals. Perhaps a dragon-bonded wouldn't need to be a hybrid to survive the fall. Not a human dragon-bonded. If the jinn were still around, or ever existed in the first place, Luca had no doubt they could survive that fall.

Luca himself, having a triton father and nymph mother, might. He didn't want to jump to find out. His body took the shock of high falls better than mortal humanoids and most immortals. The drop from the thirty foot wall would likely barely register as painful.

When he'd left the ocean, Luca hadn't thought he'd miss it. And he didn't. He looked more nymph than triton so he had lived with the nymphs. One of only three males in his city.

He supposed that was why the other two had grumbled about being outnumbered by the girls and he hadn't even noticed. As if knowing Luca was thinking about him, Callum let out a particularly loud snort before his snoring went back to the same volume as before.

A pillow shot out from the bunk below him, hitting the bigger boy in the face. Callum jolted awake, looking around blearily.

A glow emitted from the same origin as the pillow. Fire, Luca realized, "Callum. You are going to have to be quieter with your snoring," Hoku said. Grumbled, actually.

"I was snoring?" Callum asked, rubbing sleep from his eyes.

"You both were," Luca chuckled.

"Oh. You're not asleep?" Hoku again, "Did we keep you up snoring?"

Luca shrugged. Then realized they couldn't see him and said simply in a bored voice, "No."

"Ok. Sorry anyway."

Callum was asleep again. Not snoring now, though. Hoku got up and grabbed his pillow from Callum's bed.

He stared for a second at the position their roommate was in and laughed, "I should wake him up. He's going to have one heck of a crick in his neck tomorrow." He didn't, however, and went back to his bottom bunk.

Luca smiled a bit. Human males were amusing to watch. Actually, humans in general were.

His nymph community didn't agree.

They weren't rude about it, but Luca still felt a bit like an outcast. When he'd heard about this school, he'd asked his community leader to send a letter of recommendation. After a few months, Luca got a response.

Acceptance.

Thank the spirits.

With a promise to return when his school years were over and done with, he left. And gave the other two males a look when they'd told him to return with a mate. Cause he could bring someone to the bottom of an ocean. Because he'd find someone. Those thoughts were filled to the brim with sarcasm.

Luca eventually felt his eye lids begin to grow heavy and he slid down so he was lying flat on his back. It took him about five minutes more to fall into a deep, resting sleep.
