Chapter 4: Countdown

The woman tilted her head, "Oh, that's easy. You just have to get back the way you came."

"The way I came?  I don't even know how I came here in the first place."

The woman softly smiled, "You said that before this happened you sneezed and the next thing you knew you were out of your body and then ended up here.  And the man who explained things to you told you that the moment you sneezed the veil had weakened, and you ended up here.  Correct." Angela nodded, "That's your answer.  You must sneeze again."

"I have to sneeze!?" Angela asked, "Seriously?" But now that she thought of it she hadn't sneezed since she last sneezed.

"You just realized you haven't sneezed have you." The woman stated.

Angela looked at the woman in shock, "How did you know?"

"Similar things happened to the others.  As well as to me."

Angela's eyes widened in surprise, "You?  You were also spirited here?"

The woman nodded, "Yes.  I hiccupped, I couldn't hiccup while I was here, but eventually I was able to and went back home."

Angela smiled at knowing that there was now some hope she could go home.

"But my body had already been incapable of being revived.  So, I ended back here."

She felt her mouth go dry, "I'm sorry."

The woman waved her off, "It's okay.  It's been a long time since then.  Anyways, you just have to sneeze.  Try whatever you can to do so, I don't know how much time you have now.  But know that time here is .... hard to tell.  But if times up, you'll most likely be able to feel it." The woman brushed back strands of her strawberry blonde hair behind her ear.

"Feel it?"

The woman nodded, "Yes.  Feel the moment that the link between your body and soul have been broken.  It's best if you start now, I wish you the best of luck.  May you have a better outcome than I did." She wished her luck and walked away.

"What's your name?" Angela asked before the woman fully left.

The woman turned, smiled and replied, "Amy Beltner."

"Would you happen to know the name of the man I spoke about?" Angela described the man to Amy.

Amy pondered for a while, "That would most likely be Thomas Parker." And with that she turned away once again and continued to walk away, "Oh if you do make it out, you'll most likely never be the same again." She called out.

Angela rubbed her nose, pushed down on her nose with hope that maybe by doing so she would be able to sneeze.

She continued to rub at her nose, "Please work." She pleaded.

But to her dismay, it didn't work.

It felt impossible, but she would keep trying.  Amy was able to do it, but in the end, it wasn't to her favor.  But if she could do it, then she could as well.  There had to be some sort of trick for it.

Just like sneezes, hiccups are hard.  They're annoying and sometimes painful, but now as she tried to sneeze it was so hard to get a sneeze and she could imagine that getting a hiccup or two out would be just as hard as well.

'Could it be because I'm just a soul that I can't sneeze?' She thought to herself as she let out a long sigh went and walked towards one of the walls, sat herself and leaned against it and let her head lean back with a small thud.

She quietly watched the various people pass buy, hear them murmuring and even gossip of who had recently come and talk about how they died, what had been happening before they ended up there.

She listened to it all, she was stressed, but she tried to calm herself with hearing some familiarity by listening to these once living people talk of the most random of things.

Angela let out a sigh through her nose and slightly tilted her had to the side only to feel discomfort.

"Ouch." Angela pulled away from the wall and placed her hand on her head.  Her hair that had been in a bun, not the neatest as she would have liked, was sliding sideways.  Some strands tickling her ear.

"Wait a minute." She pulled the hair tie and let her hair fall loose, "It tickles." She grabbed the strands of hair that cascaded over her shoulder, "Maybe this will work." She pulled a few strands of hair and placed it up to her nose.

She rubbed the strands under her nose, on the sides of her nose and on top of her nose, hoping that maybe her hair that was able to tickle her ear would be enough to tickle her nose and cause her to sneeze.

"Please work." She pleaded as she tried over and over again.

She knew she was getting off stares from the spirits walking by some blatantly watched her and some even gestured at her with either their hands or head.  But she didn't care if they watched her, all she wanted was to sneeze.

Angela didn't know how long she had brushed her hair against and near her nose, but after what seemed like an eternity, she finally felt an itch.  A tickle.

An all too familiar feeling that always led to a sneeze.

She could feel a sneeze build up slowly waiting, but just as she was about to sneeze, it went away just as quickly as it had come.

Angela slapped her hands onto the marble ground in exasperation and let out an annoyed groan.

"Are you kidding me.  Is someone up there messing with me right now?!" She exclaimed in frustration as she pulled in her knees against her chest.

'Is this really the end?' She thought as she placed her chin on her knees.

Angela had begun to feel all hope was shattering away, and just as she began to give up, she saw it.

She knew that there were non-human beings here, but she didn't imagine that there would be one like this.

A large cat like beast.  A cat when it was possibly in the final countdown.
