Chapter 57: The Escape

We had contacted Nathan Greenwood on Sunday to let him know about Anne. He was both shocked and delighted because, as we all knew already, she would provide a huge piece of evidence in Theodore's conviction. He arranged to meet with us first thing Monday morning at our hotel.
When he arrived, he walked straight to Anne and said, "I'm Nathan Greenwood, your attorney. And I believe you might be interested in this." He handed her a large envelope.
She opened it and gasped. "It's the will," she informed us in a shaky voice.
"It wasn't hard to obtain, actually," Nathan told us. "Turns out the attorney who drafted it used to work in our office, but he has since opened his own practice."
We invited Nathan to sit down and offered him a cup of coffee, which he graciously accepted. "Do you know what this means?" He asked Anne but then looked at all of us.
"Not until we know what the will says," Dad said with a chuckle.
"Oh right," he said. "Of course, Anne already knows since she signed it. She is the beneficiary to William's estate, company, and assets. Theodore was obviously a secondary beneficiary. So that means..."
"That I still own...everything?" Anne asked, her throat going dry.
"That's exactly what it means," Nathan answered. "Did you realize any of this after you went back to England?"
"I...I did actually," Anne said. "I could just never bring myself to come back or to contact Theodore. The memories were just too painful. I knew that he would be running the company even if I was the owner, so in my mind, it didn't make a difference."
"But the money, the house....?" Nathan wondered.
"I couldn't live there without William and Harry," she said, choking up. "And the money was nothing to me after all I had lost. But now that I think about it, I'm sure Theodore was pleased that I never fought for it. I'm sure he had a plan to deal with me if I ever did. Did you say that he actually falsified my death certificate?" She shuddered and Harry put his arm around her.
Nathan nodded. "I understand why you didn't come back," he said to her. "It's all right. But now, obviously we have a few more people to talk to since Theodore falsified your death and also lied to you about Harry's death."
Moved by emotion, Anne threw her arms around Harry and the two hugged and cried happy tears, just to be reunited again.
As if they were summoned, Officer Michaels and Officer Gage, one of the officers who had come on Saturday night, knocked at the door.
"Hello," Nathan greeted them and introduced himself. "We were just talking about how we needed to get some more answers and you two will certainly be able to help."
"Great," Officer Michaels said. "First off, though, I wanted you all to know that Theodore Blake will be held without bail after this morning's arraignment hearing."
I looked at Harry in triumph and hugged him tightly, and everyone else cheered. What a relief to not have to worry about him while we figured the rest of this mess out.
"That's fantastic news," Nathan said and we all agreed. "Now, I was just beginning to say that we need to do some more investigating to find out who helped Theodore falsify Anne's death. It would have to have been someone at the coroner's office. I mean, how do you fake a death when the person is still alive and breathing in a hospital room in the city?"
"That's what I intend to find out," Gage said. "I'm a detective and my partner Hughes and I are already looking into it. You met him when we first came over on Saturday." Thank heavens everything seemed to be falling into place.
"What about Benjamin Blake?" I asked.
"Benjamin will be charged with practicing medicine without a license, falsifying medical documents, illegally prescribing medications, among other things," Detective Gage told me.
"But is he out?" I asked.
"Yes, he's out on bail."
"He's very loyal to his brother," I said in a worried voice.
"That may be the case, but believe me, Theodore Blake will remain in custody. And we don't have any reason to believe that Benjamin will come after any of you. I think he's mainly interested in protecting himself at this point. You should have nothing to worry about."
Officer Michaels piped in again. "We also wanted to let you know that some of Blake's household employees are still under investigation. There is no one living at the house at this time, but when the time is right, you should be able to go up there and begin the process of hiring contractors for restoration. We will let you know when that can happen."
I couldn't imagine ever wanting to return to that place, but I wondered if Harry would. Would he want to live there with his mom? Would he want to go back just to say good-bye to the place, even this his portion of the house was burned to the ground?
"What about me?" Clive asked. "Am I...uh.. going to be charged with anything?" That hadn't even occurred to me, although Clive had just admitted to looking the other way and ignoring many of Theodore's offenses.
"We can't say for sure yet," Detective Gage answered. "We'll definitely be checking out everything you've told us. But since you actually tried to help the kids escape and you uncovered Theodore's lie about Anne's death, it's safe to say you're complying with authorities. I honestly don't think any criminal charges will be brought against you."
"You should tell them what you told us," I interjected. "About your wife and Theodore paying for her treatments. I think it's relevant."
Clive nodded sadly and sat down to tell Gage about the situation with his wife and how he believes now that Theodore had done what he did for her to retain Clive's loyalty. Of course, it would be extremely difficult to prove such a thing; indeed, it would be difficult to prove any of Theodore's brainwashing attempts, but there were certainly enough victims to testify to his mind games if they were willing to testify against him.
After the meeting with the lawyer and police officers, Harry and I excused ourselves to our room as we were both exhausted. It seemed everyone was on their way to take a nap as my parents had also excused themselves and Anne and Clive went back to their respective rooms as well. Harry had spent the night in his mother's room again the night before, the two of them wanting to be as close to each other as possible. But now we were reunited.
"I missed you," I said as he locked the door behind us.
He came to me and kissed me tenderly. "I missed you, too."
And then all the intensity of emotions from the past few days got the better of us. He lifted me up and kissed me harder and I wrapped my legs around his waist. With two steps, he pushed me against the wall, pressing himself against me and prompting a small whine to escape from my throat.
"They'll hear us," I panted quietly.
He let me down and grabbed the TV remote. He turned on some music channel and turned it up, not too loud, but loud enough to drown out the sounds of our passion. Then he returned to me. "I need you," he said, nuzzling his face into my neck and then kissing under my jaw and my ear.
"Same," I whispered and he chuckled just a little, sending tiny vibrations to my throat. I pulled back and yanked his shirt over his head, reveling in his scent and intensifying my desire for him. Before long, we were both naked and ready for the union and culmination of the love and passion that went along with the angst of our ordeal.
While he moved against me, deeply filling every need I've ever had, he hummed my name and repeated to me how much he loved me. I softly echoed every sentiment back to him, thankful that we had each other in this way to express something so beautiful in the midst of something so awful.
We fell asleep afterwards, sufficiently exhausted by our activities and the emotions surrounding us, and we woke up close to dinner time. Harry and I dressed and tried to leave our room as casually as possible, hoping we hadn't alerted anyone to our earlier activities. My parents were awake and quietly watching TV while Anne was talking to someone on the phone. Clive wasn't back yet so maybe he was still resting or just getting some quiet time to himself. Lord knows he'd been busy the past few weeks.
"So, what's everyone thinking for dinner?" I asked, stifling a yawn.
"We should go out and celebrate," Mom said. "It's been a pretty eventful day, hasn't it? And all the news has been good."
"So true," I said. "What do you think, Harry?"
With a dimpled smile, he said, "Sounds great to me." Knowing Harry, he would probably choose to go out every single chance he got after he had been kept in that suite for the vast majority of his life.
A knock on our door made me think that Clive had come to join the party. However, opening the door revealed a concerned-looking Detective Gage. "Hey folks, I'm afraid I have some bad news," he said as he stepped inside.
My heart felt like it dropped into my stomach and I was no longer even remotely hungry for dinner.
Gage closed the door behind him and informed us, "Theodore Blake escaped from police custody this afternoon, after the arraignment. As of yet, we haven't been able to track him down."
