Ocean's 9-1-1/ Kate's beginnings Part 2; Ep: 15

The 118 was riding for their next emergency at a vault where two a men had collapsed. One of them, Mr. Prentiss, owned the vault, while the other, Billy, is one of the delivery guys of the company. They arrived and see a van with another delivery guy in it. They enter the building where they get to Billy first. Chimney bent down and started checking on him.

"Airway's clear. No MedicAlert bracelet. Jaws not clenched. Tongue is neutral." He informed.

"All right. Get him started on 02. Ten liters." Bobby ordered. "You said there was a second patient?" Bobby asked an assistant.

Bobby, Hen and Kate get in to check Mr Prentiss who has saliva coming out of his mouth. Hen and Kate bent down next to the man.

"Same as the courier out front. Exhibiting extreme muscle spasms." Hen said as Kate checked the man's face.

"Cap, pupils are dilated." Kate informed as Eddie made his way in.

"I don't know what we're looking at here." Bobby said making both girls to look at him.

"Could be a nerve agent." Eddie said making them look at him.

"You've seen it before?" Kate asked.

"Been trained for." He informed. "Symptoms all line up. The fact that we have multiple people down. I can't say for sure until we run some tests."

"All right, Kate, Hen. Back away." Bobby ordered making the girls get their gear and get up following Eddie and Bobby.

"You got everything?" Hen asked.

Kate put one last thing on her bag and started walking with Hen. "Yeah."

"We are now preparing for possible chemical exposure incident. That means nobody in, nobody out." Bobby said.

Hen and Kate heard noises on the background. They quickly turned their heads and saw the vault closing. Hen ran inside.

"Hen!" Kate said as she followed the woman who was now inside.

"Hey, Kate! Kate! Hen!" Eddie said while running towards the vault.

"Hen! Kate!" Bobby called out but the vault was out of their reach as they tried to open it with their hands.

Hen tried to lead the man out of the vault but he tried to get her away by putting his hands on her face. Kate tried to take him out by his legs.

"Wait... No. Sir, calm down. Stay calm." Hen said. "We're with LAFD. We got to get you out of here!"

"No! No!" Kate said as she runned towards the door closing. The last thing she saw before the door closed was Eddie's concerned expression.

"Kate, Hen, do you copy?" Bobby said throught the radio.

"We're here, Cap." Hen said looking at Kate who had her face hidden in her hands as she leaned her arms against the door. "Making ourselves comfortable."

"Not too comfortable."

After a few minutes of waiting for Bobby to say something, Kate started feeling unwell but she noticed that Hen was worse as they paced around the room.

"Hen, Kate, how's the air in there? Hen? Kate? Do you copy?" Bobby asked.

When Kate noticed, Hen felt on the ground, saliva coming out of her mouth. Kate stumbled on her feet as she tried to get to her best friend.

"Hen?" She said. After those words, everything started spinning.

"Kate? Kate!" She heard Bobby on the radio as she fell on the ground.

She passed out.

March 2011

The only number she had that wasn't her relative's, was Aaron's. She called him.

"Hey." She greeted.

"Hey, it's 2:25 in the morning, you better have an explanation for waking me up." Aaron said from the other side of the phone.

She chuckled a little. "I bet you weren't even sleeping."

"All right, got me there." He said. "Is everything okay?"

"No."

Kate arrived at Aaron's house by taxi. She was surprised that there were still some working at that time. She walked to the front porch and knocked on the door. Aaron opened the door with a concerned face.

"Hey." He said gently.

"Hi." Kate said.

"Come on in." He said as she walked to the living room.

"Nice house." She said.

"Thanks. Want some wine?" He asked.

"At 2:47 in the morning?" She asked as he nodded. "Yeah, okay."

He came back with two glasses and a bottle of wine.

"What happened for you to call me this late?" He asked as he poured some wine on her glass.

"I got kicked out." She said as he handed her her glass.

"Really? Oh, I'm sorry." He said taking a sip of his wine.

"Don't be. It all happens for a reason..." She said taking a sip of her wine.

"Which is?"

"I'm the least favourite child of three kids, which means that everything I do is wrong and I'm not enought for them." She took a giant sip before keeping. "My other siblings moved on with their lives. My older sister, Maddie, went to live with her new husband. My twin and younger brother, 3 minutes by the way, gor tired of this and ran away. He's probably somewhere in Los Angeles. I think he's staying there. The last letter he sent was different from the others. Anyways, I'm sorry I showed up so late and like this but you're the only number I have that is not one of my relatives."

"Oh, it's okay. You can stay here as long as you want?" He said with a smile.

"Really?" He nodded. "Thank you so much."

"Come here." He said as he pulled Kate into a hug.

From that day, Kate had been hanging out a lot with him. After a few weeks, they started dating which pissed her mother off. Her dad was quite okay with it, he probably loved the guy more than he loved Kate. She got a job at the local city's newspaper which made her earn some money. She even made a close friend at work, her name was Ashley.

Everything was going great. New boyfriend, new job, new friend, new life. Until, one night, Kate caught Aaron talking to someone on the phone. When he saw her, he quickly hung up.

"Who was it?" Kate asked as she leaned on the kitchen's door frame.

He put his phone on his pocket. "Just a friend from work." She nodded. "I had a busy day, I should go to bed." He walked towards her and placed a kiss on her cheek.

Since that day, everything started going down the sink. Aaron had been acting really strange and hadn't been around much. Kate felt like he was cheating on her but she stopped overthinking because she knew he loved her. Right?

7th June.

It was a busy day at work. They had to make a lot of new's paper since the mayfair was about to open soon. She came home feeling exhausted. She got in and dropped her stuff on the hall.

"Aaron, I'm home." She said but got no response. She frowned confused. "Aaron? Are you home?"

He should be home right now. She thought to herself.

"Aaron?" She said aproching to their bedroom.

That's when she saw him making out with a blonde girl. The same blonde girl from work. Ashley.

"What the hell?" She said as tears started forming on her eyes.

"Oh, hey, babe." Aaron said pulling away from Ashley whose face was red from embarassement.

"What the hell is going on?" Kate asked, anger boiling inside her.

"This is not what it looks like." Ashley said.

"Oh, really? Because I think this is exactly what it looks like!" Kate said. She turned to Aaron. "Seriously? My best friend? You have plenty of other chicks around Pennsylvania, but you chose my best friend? You gross pig." She then turned to Ashley. "And you. You should be ashamed of yourself. My boyfriend...?" A tear streamed down her face.

"I'm-I'm sorry." Ashley said.

"You should be. Both of you. Thanks for letting me know that you don't love me anymore, Aaron. I was just hoping it wasn't this way. Goodbye, bitch." Kate said before grabbing some important  stuff like her wallet and phone charger and walking towards the door.

"Wait, where the hell are you going?" It was Aaron who asked from behind her. He got no answer which made him grab her wrist to turn her around. She pulled from his grip. "Hey, I asked you something."

"It's none of your business." Kate said with anger.

"So, you're breaking up with me...?" He asked confused.

"No, I forgive you, Aaron." She said sarcastically. "What does it look like?"

"Oh, right." He said as she opened the door. "You know you have nowhere to go, right?"

She turned around but still walked away. "Yeah, we'll see about that. Go to hell, Jones." She said as she gave him the middle finger and walked away.

Where was she going? She didn't know, but it was definently away from him and that little bitch. So many emotions that she was feeling grwoing inside of her. Anger, betrayal, sadness. The two people she was supposed to trust the most got together.

She looked at her phone. 9pm. She opened her contacts. Aaron, Ashely, Aaron, Aaron, Ashley. She got tired of reading those name's and deleted their contacts. She kept looking for someone other than her parents. Maddie. No, she was with her husband.

Evan.

She called him, waiting from him to pick up.

"Come on, pick up, pick up." She said impatient but he didn't pick up.

She sighed and looked at her wallet.

"Guess I'm going to Los Angeles." She said as she called for a taxi.

With the small amout of money from her previous job, she was luckily able to get a plane ticket to LA. It took off at 10pm taking only 5 hours to get there. It was late and she didn't want to bother Evan so she went to a small hotel not far away from the airport. She could get a small room that was enough just for herslef and letting herself fall onto the bed. She couldn't help but cry and cry, but eventually falling asleep.

She woke up at 11:30 am on the other day. She knew that Evan worked at the LAFD station so she decided to go there to visit him. Once she walked in, a tall man on his fifties walked towards her.

"Captain Bobby Nash, can I help you?" Bobby said with a gentle smile.

"Kaitlyn Buckley, but you can call me Kate." She said with a smile.

Something she said must've said made him and two more firefighters confused. An asian man and a black beautiful woman her height, approched the two.

"Oh, there's more of you?" The asian guy asked.

"Excuse me?" Kate said with a confused face.

"Kate?" A voice behind Bobby said.

"Evan?" She said as he runned towards her and hugged her.

"Evan?" The asian guy said, confused by the name she called him.

"What are you doing here?" He asked as they pulled away.

"It's a long story, I'll explain later."

He nodded and turned around to face the other three firefighters.

"Guys, this is my twin sister, Kate."

"Nice to meet you." The woman said. "I'm Hen."

"I'm Chimney."

"Chimney? That's an unusual nickname." Kate said with a smile.

"Yeah, I'll tell you that story later." Hen said as she chuckled.

"By the way, here they call me Buck." Buck stated.

"Buck? Seriously?" She laughed. "You created it, right?"

"Oh, yeah, he did." Bobby said with a smile.

"Hey, always better than Evan." Buck said.

Kate smiled to herself, she was in the right place.

Since then, Kate had joined the 118 and created a second family. She loved the 118.

Then this new guy showed up and...

----------------------------------

And there she was. Brought back to reality. Awaken by that same new guy.

"Eddie?" She muttered.

He chuckled. "You're gonna be okay, all right? Come on, let's get you out of here." He said gently.

She got on a gurney to get to the hospital to get better treatment. When she got there, one officer watched her intensly. She got confused until, after her nurse took her blood pressure, he walked towards her.

"You might be wondering what I'm doing here." The officer told her.

"Yeah, kinda." She said.

"You and you're team have been accused of robering the vault."

She frowned "Wait, what?"

----------------------------------

Kate sat on a chair on the interrogation room, thinking about everything, even her flashbacks. Robery? What the hell was he talking about?

She waited patiently until she saw two officers, a male and a female, coming in and sitting in front of her. She raised an eyebrow.

"300,000 dollars." The woman said as both officers tossed her some papers.

"Tucked away on the 118 ladder truck." The man, Walsh, said. She looked at the papers and then at the man. "Any idea how it got there?"

She raised an eyebrow "No, why would I?"

"You're with the 118." The woman, Mercer, said. "And you were at the bank when it was stolen."

"If by 'at the bank' you mean that I was unconscious and inside  the vault then, yes, I was at the bank." She said, not understanding where they were going with that. "And I wasn't alone."

"Yeah, we talked with Mr. Prentiss but he was kind of on the other side of his mind and said he didn't know what happened." Walsh said.

"Of course he didn't, he was unconsious. By the way, you know who else was unconsious? Me and firefighter Wislon." Kate stated.

"'Looks like our money trouble is over' That's the text your sister sent you right after she took the call. You care to explain?" Mercer said.

Oh, so now you stalk people's phone's too. This better also be one of your protocols. Kate thought to herself.

"It was about her landlord. Look, I don't know much about it but-" Kate said but got cut off by Walsh.

"We've already talked with your brother about that landlord situation."

"Then why would you ask me that?" Kate asked with a confused face.

"And so your sister just happened to send your squad to the scene?" Walsh asked.

"It happens more than you think. We were the closest station to the scene." Kate explained like it was something they didn't know.

"The ex-husband of your captain's fiancée was also involved. Your Captain conspired with him to steal the blueprints to that bank." Mercer said.

"They weren't stolen, I'm sure about that. He wanted to help." Kate said. "From what I know, people request those blueprints all the time. Architects and other people."

"Like terrorists." Walsh said.

"Whoa, what? No!" Kate exclaimed in disblief.

"Firefighter Diaz was the first to suggest that it might be a nerve agent." Mercer said.

"And you figured he knew what he was talking about." Walsh accused, and right.

"Yeah, well, he came from the military, it was probably part of the training." She said but they didn't look conviced. "Look, I trust him, all right? We all do."

"But he's not the Captain." Mercer said.

"But Cap said that Firefighter Diaz was right and we trust him. Hell, we trust both of them."

"Someone said Firefighter Wislon seemed stressed." Walsh said.

"Cranky, to be exact." Mercer said.

"Hen seemed cranky? Who said that?" Kate asked.

"Your brother." Walsh said earning a shocked expression from Kate.

"Ooh, he's screwed." Kate said.

"That doesn't matter." Walsh said.

"Well, yeah, Hen seemed a little cranky, but that was normal. I mean, we were having a welcome party for Chimney. She was right to feel that way."

"You were stabbed too. Why didn't you have a welcome party?" Mercer asked.

"Because I begged Hen not to have." Kate said, not understanding where they were going, again.

"Han also said he didn't want one, but he had it anyways. Why didn't you have?"

"Maybe because I didn't want to remember being stabbed, okay? Look, I don't know where we're going here..." Kate said impatient.

"Because Marty was there too." Mercer said.

"The ladder guy? Yeah, he had fixed the ladder when he came towards us. He said he didn't have problems with his arthritis anymore because he had gone to a doctor who put him on something..." Kate said.

"Come on, three weeks at home, what you do for a living." Walsh said making Kate lean back on the chair with her arms crossed on her chest. "Firefighter Han said you hung out with him several times."

"Sounded like you both had a lot of time on your hands. To think. To plan." Mercer accused, making Kate roll her eyes.

"You mean we plot together, is that it?" Kate asked confused.

"You chose to run into that vault believing there was a nerve agent present. Why would you do that?" Mercer asked.

"I was running after Hen to help her getting the man out of the vault. Besides, it's part of our job."

"Or maybe you're providing a distraction so one of your friends can do a different kind of job." Walsh said as he showed her picture of a guy on a van and next to it was her on a gurney. This made her lean towards the table once again.

"Who the hell is this guy?" She asked, confused.

"Sam Miller. The armored car driver."

"Wait, so the money didn't come from inside the vault but from the armored car?" Kate asked. Both officers nodded. "But I was in the vault the whole time. There's no way that's me, or Hen."

"No, you were the distraction." Mercer stated making her frown. "Getting everyone to look over there so no one's noticing the man emptying the armored car over here." She said the last words pointing at the car.

"So, who's your partner?" Walsh said making her tilt her head in surprise.

That was the last thing Walsh asked before telling her to go outside where she met her team.

"Hey." Buck said as she sat between him and Eddie.

"Hey." She sighed. "Was it just me or did these cops take the course out of a cereal box?"

Eddie chuckled. "Yeah, it wasn't just you."

"Glad to hear." She said, looking around. She noticed that Hen and Athena weren't there. "Where are Hen and Thena?"

"They went back to the vault to figure something out or re-living the moment, if you know what I mean." Chim said across from them.

Later that day, someone knocked on Kate's door. She opened and sighed as she saw an officer showing her a search warrant with his team behind him. She let them in and looked down confused at the paper she was holding. She sat on the living room's armchair as she saw a police officer checking the background of the TV remote where the batteries are in.

"Really? The remote?" She asked with a raised eyebrow and rolled her eyes.

----------------------------------

After dinner, Kate went over to the Diaz's house. Buck wasn't home and neither was Maddie, so he was the next option. She knocked on the door. Eddie opened the door, confused.

"What are you doing here?" He asked as Kate made her way to the kitchen.

"I need to borrow Christopher's computer, if you don't mind." Kate said, almost reaching the door.

Eddie rushed towards her, preventing her to go inside. "You can't go in there." He said.

"What? Why?" She asked, confused.

"Shannon's in there." He said, clearly afraid of her reaction.

"Let me meet her then." She said.

He scoffed. "No way."

"Why not? I think it's time." She shrugged.

"Yeah, I don't think so."

"Please, I just need Christopher's computer." She begged.

"You mean the one that's probably where yours is?"

"What? They took his too? Why would they do that?" She sighed.

"I guess like father like son." He joked as she laughed. She then had an idea.

"What about Shannon's?" She asked 'innocently'.

"Don't even think about it."

"Please, it's real quick." She begged as he shock his head. "Please, please, please!"

"Fine, but I go in first." He said as he opened the door.

"Hey, Shannon..." Eddie said but got cuf off by Chris.

"Katie!" He said as he walked towards her.

"Hey, buddy, how are you?" She asked as she pulled him into a hug. Once they pulled away, Chris went to the bathroom to brush his teeth.

Shannon got up from her seat. "So, you're the famous Katie, huh?"

Kate couldn't help but chuckle a little, even though she didn't fancy the woman. "Yeah, I think I am."

Shannon nodded.

"I have a favor." Eddie said.

"What is it?" Shannon asked, looking Kate up and down.

Is she judging me? Kate thought to herself as she raised an eyebrow.

"I need to borrow your computer." Eddie asked.

"I don't have it. It went with the officers." Shannon explained.

"Wait, yours too?" Eddie asked confused as Shannon nodded.

"How could you not even know that, Diaz?" Kate asked in disblief.

As Shannon was still his wife, he should've known.

"Well, you didn't know either!" Eddie said to Kate.

"Yeah, but I'm not her-" She started but got cut off by her phone vibrating. "It's the hospital." Eddie's eyes widened. "Excuse me for a second."

She said as she went to the hallway.

"The favor was for her, right?" Shannon asked Eddie.

"Yeah, why?"

"Why would she borrow my computer when she doesn't even know me?" Shannon said as she crossed her arms.

"It was just for a couple of minutes, it wasn't a big deal anyway." Eddie defended his friend.

"So? I-" Shannon started but Kate came in before she could keep talking.

"They got my tox report back." Kate said.

"And?" Eddie asked curiously.

"You'll never believe what they found. Scorpion venom."

"What?" Eddie asked now confused.

"It was in the hand sanitizer that Hen found in the vault when she went with Athena a few hours ago."

"And what is that supposed to mean?" Shannon asked.

Why do you care? Kate thought to herself.

"I have no idea." Eddie said while looking at Kate who had a thinking expression. "But, you do..."

"Yeah, I know exactly who did this." Kate said.

----------------------------------

The team was getting ready to catch Marty, the ladder guy who helped robbing the bank. When they saw him coming in, they hid.

"Hey, Marty, thanks for coming." Chimney said as he opened one of the truck's door.

"Hey, yeah, I heard you guys were having trouble with the ladder. Was starting to think you guys don't really know how to use it."

"Well, you know how we operate." Eddie said as he opened another truck's door. "All our procedures and protocols."

"But maybe you could show us some tricks." Buck said, standing next to Kate and Bobby.

"Yeah, you seem to know more about this than we do." Bobby said.

"Like where to hide 300,000 dollars in cash." Kate said as she crossed her arms on her chest.

"What are you guys talking about?" Marty said as he chuckled nervously.

"How are your hands, Marty?" Hen asked as she appeared from behind him. "That alternative medicine still working?"

Marty looked around each one of them one by one before running away. The team didn't do anything though as Athena, Walsh and Mercer appeared in front of the exit.

"Marty Collins. You're under arrest for bank robbery and murder." Walsh said.

"Murder? Who'd I kill?" Marty asked confused.

----------------------------------

"Okay, so let's see if I got this right." Buck said as he and the team sat down to have lunch the next day. "The fake nerve agent attack was a distraction for the armored car robbery... which was a distraction for the diamond heist. Crime is hard."

"Franklin knew the bank and Marty knew us." Hen explained.

"But how did they know each other?" Eddie asked confused.

"Brothers-in-law." Kate said from next to him making him look at her. "Well, ex-brothers-in-law."

"Franklin had been married to Marty's crazy sister. And when they ran into each other again, a plan formed." Hen explained.

"Franklin was the inside man. His job was to create a medical emergency in the bank. The kind that would trigger a hazmat response because Marty knew that we'd have to seal the perimeter to execute the Big Bird protocol." Kate kept Hen's thoughts.

"He gets the driver to leave the truck and empty all his pockets. And while the driver gets cleaned, Marty gets rich. Except, how's he gonna get all that money out of there? Can't just walk it off the scene. He needed a mule. Or a team of mules." Hen kept explaining.

"Us. He puts the money inside the truck and, boom, it's done." Kate said.

"Not a bad plan. I mean, it's crazy, but it could've worked." Bobby said. "We bring the money back here and all he has to do is wait for the right moment, sneak in, access the ladder truck and retrieve the money. Except there wasn't any, because the police had already beaten him the punch."

"But how'd the police know exactly where to find the money?" Buck asked.

"Cause there was one variable that Marty didn't count on. The double-cross. See, Marty may have known everything there is to know about LAFD protocol, but Franklin knew about the bank. He knew what was in that vault." Chim paused to take a bite of his food and swalloing fast. "He could steal those diamonds with his eyes closed. See, Marty's plan was simple, but Franklin's was more time-sensitive so he told Marty the best day to rob the armored car would be his last day. He knew there'd be a party at the end of the day, at the close of business. He'd start with Marty's plan, than he'd improvise. Franklin made sure he collapsed inside the vault. He knew what our response would be.

"Then all he had to do was wait for the vault to automatically close and time-seal for the night. Then he'd have hours alone inside the vault while we ran our protocls. It was a meticulous plan. But there was an unexpected complication." Chim kept going.

"Us." Kate and Hen said at the same time.

"He was supposed to be there alone. So us running in to save his sorry ass? A complication. He had to take us out too. So he touching my face and Kate touching his made us collapse as well. But now he's playing 'beat the clock'. Soon as the cameras couldn't see, Franklin swiped six million in stones and waited to be saved. He had the stones all he needed was a clean getaway." Hen explain letting Kate continue.

"He sends the police after us. So, while the police are investigating us... he could flee the country. New name, new passport, new life. He just wasn't fast enought."

"Marty knew he'd been double-crossed. He goes to confront Franklin." Eddie said.

"So Marty killed Franklin." Buck said with a proud smile for understanding.

"No, Franklin ate the diamonds, killing himself." Kate ended.
