Chapter Three

{Mara's Perspective}

I held my hands in front of my face, the small wisps of my hair sitting in between my eyes. Supergirl mimicked my stance, her cape flowing back and forth gracefully. How did she fight with her hair down? Supergirl's fist went to swing at me. I barely had time to duck so instead I grabbed her fist with my left hand. Supergirl's eyebrow rose at my move. She pulled me by my hand, grabbing my forearm with her free hand. I didn't realise what she was going to do until my stomach hit the hard floors.

"Okay, you win" I groaned, feeling her hands letting go of my arms. "You always win" I added as I got up from the floor. Supergirl only laughed at my comment. She handed me a water bottle as I walked towards her. "Your abilities are kicking in nicely. You'll be flying by Christmas" Supergirl smiled at me.

I still didn't know how to feel about all this. Less than three weeks ago my biggest worry was some seniors messing up my art project. Now I'm being hunted by an alien hate group because I'm one of the last Kryptonians in existence. That was also something I needed to get used to. Being one of the last Kryptonians wasn't what I was expecting when thinking about my birth family.

"Special delivery!"

I turned to see Agent Danvers holding a takeaway bag. I could not read the writing so I grabbed my glasses from the bench nearby. "Noonans? What's that?" I asked when Danvers handed me a bag. I opened it to smell the most delicious sandwich ever. I heard an offended gasp from Supergirl. "It's like the best place in all of National City" She told me, some chocolate at the side of her mouth. I was kinda surprised that the Girl of Steel was eating such an unhealthy breakfast. Supergirl must have noticed my surprise.

She quickly gulped down her last bite before clearing her throat. "Earth's food doesn't affect us, so we basically gain zero weight and can eat as much as we want" Supergirl explained to me before eating another slice of cake. "I got you a breakfast bap Mara" Agent Danvers smiled at me, eating her salad. "Thank you Agent Danvers" I smiled at the woman. She rolled her eyes at me. "Please call me Alex" She asked me. I nodded at her. I took a bite of the sandwich, the savoury taste of melted butter mixed with sausages and bacon making me smile while chewing.

Supergirl giggled at my expression. She was right, this was the best food I've ever had. "I gotta go, Mara, I'll see you later" She smiled at me before leaving in a flash. Alex only rolled her eyes once again. "Don't you have schoolwork to do?" She asked me, noticing my Percy Jackson book next to my bag. I shook my head. "I'm finished the whole semester, just waiting to get the next one" I told her, still eating my sandwich. Alex looked taken aback by the response I gave her. "I keep forgetting you're a genius" She laughed to herself as I only shrugged. "Semi-genius. I'm not that smart, the only reason I'm graduating is that I'm good at math and history" I told her.

A beep came from her phone. Alex took a look before sighing. "Sorry Kid, I gotta go. But I'm sure Winn will be able to keep you company" She smiled at me before leaving me alone in the training room. I sighed when the door closed. Alone, again. I know it's their job but I really like their company and how they treat me like a real person. I finished my sandwich before finishing Titan's Curse for the third time.

{Author's Perspective}

Alex searched for J'onn the minute she got back from Kara's latest save. She couldn't help but think about Mara. She is just a kid and now she has to hide because of CADMUS. Alex swore that if she got her hands on Lillian Luthor no one would get them off her. Mara had done everything she was told. Replaced her glasses with one that contained lead for her newly required x-ray vision, training with Kara every morning for the past week since her strength kicked in and not to mention controlling her heat vision and hearing. The girl needed a chance to be a kid.

Thankfully for Alex, J'onn was in his office. "Yes, Alex?" J'onn asked before the woman even knocked on the door. Alex gave her friend a tight-lipped smile before clearing her throat. "I have a request regarding Mara" Alex began, speaking formally towards her boss. J'onn nodded for her to continue. "I want to take her out for the day" Alex ripped off like a bandaid.

The martian wasn't surprised. He knew of the possible relation between Kara and the young girl which is why he has overseen her progress personally. "And a reason why I should allow you to take young Mara out of the safety of this building while CADMUS is still at large?" He asked Alex, raising his eyebrow at the redhead.

"She's just a kid. Being cooped up in this place isn't doing her any favours. She's finished an entire semester's worth of schoolwork in the space of three weeks. I've seen her read the same book series twice and is on the third round. By next week she'll have the series memorized. Mara needs to get out of the building for a breath of fresh air and a break" Alex explained to the best of her ability to convince J'onn.

"Okay"

"But-" Alex was taken aback, she was positive J'onn would disapprove of her request. "I can take her out into the city?" Alex asked once more, disbelief in her eyes. J'onn shook his head at his agent's disbelief. "Do you need to hear it again Danvers?" J'onn asked, eyebrow raised at her. Alex shook her head before leaving the man in peace.

Quickly, Alex dialled her sister's number. "Meet me outside Noonans in two hours" She smiled, not leaving her sister anytime to answer before hanging up and rushing to Mara's small bunk.

Mara was sitting on the bed provided by the DEO, a small portion of her book left to be read as she hummed a tune. At the sound of the door hissing open, her head turned away from the book. "Oh, hey Alex" Mara smiled, putting the bookmark on the current page and closing the book. Alex smiled at the teen, barely containing her excitement.

"Come on" Alex told her, throwing an ID card at her feet. Mara looked at the woman confused, picking up the card. "What's this?" Mara asked, noting her school picture from the yearbook was placed on it along with her name, age, some level status and the DEO logo. "It's your ID card for the building. Let's you go almost anywhere depending on the level you are" Alex explained, using Mara's key card to open the elevator that brought them to the ground floor.

Mara's eyes went wide as they came out of the elevator, clutching her new ID card to her chest. "Awesome!" Mara gasped, following Alex to the main exit. Once they got outside, Mara's skin felt tingly as the sun reflected off of her skin. She felt a rush of energy as she walked alongside Alex. She had never felt like this before.

"Mara this is Kara, my sister"

Mara looked up to see a blonde woman with thick black glasses. Her hair was neatly tied back into a ponytail and her eyes were a bright blue. She had a light blue sweater paired with a white collared shirt and a pair of dark navy jeans. She smiled at Mara kindly, a sense of deja vu flooding the young girl's body. "Hi! It's great to meet you!" Kara smiled cheerfully, extending her hand out.

Mara gave her small smile back, shaking her hand loosely. "Hi" Mara spoke softly. Alex and Kara shared a look, the brunette only shrugging at her sister. "Alex says you've never been to Noonans?" Kara asked with her eyebrow raised. Mara nodded carefully, still shy around Kara. "Well, how about an early lunch?" Alex suggested, noticing the awkward silence between Mara and Kara.

Mara sat down next to Alex in the corner booth of Noonans. The place looked cosy and had a warm feeling to it. Mara felt like she could read books in the place all day if she had her way. Kara gave Alex a questioning look, trying to see if Mara was comfortable with her. Alex only rolled her eyes and silently urged her sister to talk with the Kryptonian. "See anything you like?" Kara asked her, peering over her menu.

Mara bit her lip for a moment, her eyes turning a light grey. "I dunno, it all sounds super good" She admitted, unsure of what she should buy. "How about the fudge cake? It's the best if I'm honest" Kara suggested, hoping that she had a sweet tooth. Mara nodded shyly, her eyes changing to light blue.

Alex had gone to order the food leaving the two blondes alone. "I like your hair" Kara commented, hoping to keep the awkwardness at bay. "Thanks, my brother Henry dyed it for me at the start of the summer" Mara smiled, remembering how they had stained the entire shower dark purple. It hadn't been long since it was dyed but the colour washed out fairly quickly. "You must miss him a lot huh?" Kara commented, knowing how close the two seemed to be.

Mara's face fell at the reminder that her brother was in a completely different part of the country instead of being down the hall. "He's my family, I'm not whole without him" She told Kara before Alex came back to the table. "What about you two? You don't exactly look related?" Mara asked, curious if one of the Danvers was adopted. The sisters both held back laughs at the bluntness of Mara's words. "Alex's parents adopted me after my parents died. I was about your age when it happened" Kara answered. "Oh...if you'll excuse me" She bit back her lip before entering the bathroom.

Mara closed the stall from behind her. Her breath caught in her throat as she backed herself up to the stall door. She felt her throat close up as her eyes burned. Everything was cold, her chest, her nose, everything was cold. She could feel something tickle down half-way her face. Mara gently brought her fingers up to her cheek.

She felt something ice-cold before retracting her hand. A single piece of ice sat on her fingers. Her eyes turned a vivid yellow as her breathing started to become shallow and quick. She slowly slides down to the floor, more tears building up and freezing on her face. The carbon dioxide that left her lungs was visible.

"Mara?" Kara's voice called out in the empty bathroom. Mara's panic became worse as Kara's footsteps approached. The footsteps stopped outside Mara's stall. "Mara, sweetie are you okay?" Kara asked from the other side. Mara tried to hide her sobs in vain, unaware the blonde could see and hear her from behind the dark wood.

Kara gently knelt, putting her hand in between the gap between the stall door and the ground. Mara moved away from her hand, afraid of her lack of restraint. "C-Can you get Alex?" Mara asked, her voice shaky and shallow.

Kara bit her lip, knowing that getting Alex wasn't an option. "She had an emergency at work... Can you open the door?" Kara told Mara. The young blonde reached out to the small metal lock, hoping to open it normally. Only when Mara hit the lock, a chunk of wood came off with it. Mara curled in on herself, her lack of control crushing her inside.

She didn't notice Kara's hands on her shoulders. Mara could only feel the cold in her body, unaware that she was gaining another ability. "Mara, can you look at me please... you're gonna blackout" Kara recalled her own experience with her freeze breath. With yellow eyes, Mara tears up as she looked at Kara.

She felt so shitty. How could she live like before if she couldn't control her powers?

"Mara, I need you to take a deep breath" Kara instructed her, doing the same. Mara gulped before doing her best to take a deep breath. Kara smiled at her efforts, silently applauding the girl. "Now slowly take your time and breathe out, allow the stress and worry of your powers to melt away from your mind" Kara finished, her hands moving to Mara's, giving them a gentle squeeze.

Mara closed her eyes, slowly exhaling. She could feel the ice in her throat melt, her lungs no longer feeling like they'd never stop aching. As she opened her eye the vivid yellow became a turquoise colour and then her natural blue.

The reporter smiled brightly at Mara, gently pushing her hair back from her face. "See, you did it" Kara told her, so proud of the girl. "I'm a danger to everyone... what if I was back in Midvale and I hurt someone... I'm a freak" Mara sobbed, pulling her hands back as she curled into the corner.

"Sweetie, you are not a monster. You are a young woman thrown into a world you had no idea you were a part of. No one can blame you for learning control. That's why Alex is gonna help you... and Supergirl" Kara told her, bringing the girl into her arms.

Mara didn't take to mind that Kara knew about her training or lack of knowledge about her past. All she took was how Kara held her, how she reassured her that this wasn't her fault. Mara collapsed into her arms, her powers exhausting her greatly.

"Thank you Kara... thank you" Mara mumbled before closing her eyes, the exhaustion overwhelming her.

When Alex walked into her sister's apartment, she did not expect her to be sitting on the couch with a mug of cocoa in her hands. It was late, Alex didn't expect to be gone for so long but she was thankful the mission didn't need Supergirl.

Kara smiled at her sister as she sat across from the blonde. Tucked into the other end of the couch was Mara, smeared chocolate on her cheek. She looked peaceful as the light from the T.V shined on her face.

Alex smiled at the girl, memories of Kara falling asleep after the Wizard of Oz flooding her mind. "She reminds me of you" Alex whispered, unaware she had said it out loud. Kara turned pink at the comment. "Really?" She asked her sister. Alex nodded with a soft smile.

Kara turned back to Mara, a sense of warmth in her chest as the girl slept soundly. "She developed her freeze breath. I'm worried Alex, what if one day I'm not there to help her control it? She's just a kid who had no idea she was from Krypton her whole life" Kara explained to her sister, unsure of her place in Mara's life.

Alex could feel a piece of paper in her pocket weigh. "There's actually something I wanted to talk to you about" Alex cleared her throat. Kara raised her eyebrow at her sister's serious tone. "Is it CADMUS?" The hero asked. Alex shook her head slightly. "Not exactly. Have you heard of Ikthanol?" Alex asked Kara.

Alex watched as her sister's face paled and her eyes darkened after she registered the question she was asked.

"She's Mar-El, isn't she?"

This is looooong overdue but hopefully there won't be as long of a break as there has been. Hope you enjoyed, comment and vote!
