Chapter Ten

Mara sighed as she walked up the stairs. Henry was explaining how J'onn was showing him the ropes of his powers. Apparently young Martians are susceptible to psychic attacks by accident. Now all of the sensory overloads and panic attacks made a little more sense when they looked back on it.

'Now I can actually hear my own thoughts and not everyone else's' Henry beamed from the other side of the phone.

Mara smiled softly, "That's great, how's everything going with J'onn? He's not going too hard on you?" She asked as she made it to her floor. Henry snickered from his side of the phone.

'Don't worry, besides he wants to take me to see The Empire Strikes Back! But don't tell him I told you' He panicked lightly only to hear Mara's small laughs. 'How's things with Kara? Have you guys...talked about it?' Henry asked her. Mara sighed at the question. Ever since Jeremiah took her and the other aliens, Kara went against her boss to warn the public which resulted in her losing her job.

Mara stopped right in front of the apartment door. "No...we haven't" Mara smacked her lips. Mara didn't think it was right to unpack her biological relationship with Kara right now. She was unemployed and trying to be optimistic about it. "I'll come over to you later, love you" Mara changed the subject, putting her key in the door.

'Love you too'

Mara moved her phone from her ear as the screen turned black. Jumping in her spot, Mara dropped her phone as a voice broke through the blank and white glitching.

'To his captors...We demand you turn over Mon-El of Daxam. We know where he is. If you do not relinquish him by dawn,we will take him with force'

Mara opened the door, looking up at Kara and Mon-El as they looked back at her with concern. "What just happened and what the hell did you do?" Mara glared at Mon-El lightly. But she knew, the look on his face was enough for her to connect the dots.

~~~
"Girl why isn't Mon-El more terrified?" Henry asked, bouncing in his place next to Mara. The younger blonde bit her lip, "No idea" She muttered lightly, her mind in a daze. Henry gave her a small nudge, "You okay sis?" He asked with more urgency. Mara nodded before walking up the computers. "When the transmission came through, an unknown spacecraft entered the lower atmosphere right above National City" J'onn informed everyone.
"What do a bunch of space invaders want with a guard from Daxam?" Alex questions. Mon-El only shrugs at the question. J'onn brings up an hologram image of the ship, "Does any of this look familiar to you?" He asks Mon-El. Mara watched him closely, seeing the apprehension in his eyes. "I've never seen a cruiser like that in my life" Mon-El lied through his teeth.
His eyes wandered around the room, not missing the glare coming from Mara. He gave her a small nod of his head, praying Kara wouldn't notice. "We're searching for the origin of the ship to see if that gives us any indication as to who our new friends may be, but so far, no match" J'onn sighed deeply as he looked around him. "Agent Schott!" The Martian called out, his face turned at the lack of his employee. "Where the hell is he?" J'onn grumbled.
Mara stepped forward, "I can help with the search" She offered. J'onn gave her a suspicious look, "Are you gonna try to hack into more classified information?" He questioned her. Mara shook her head vigorously, "Cross my heart, besides I give full permission for you to read my mind too" Mara made the 'x' motion over her heart. J'onn nodded curtly, watching Mara squeal as she slid into Winn's usual chair.
J'onn, already regretting his decision sighed, "Supergirl, Alex let's go over some ideas for when we decide to approach the vessel" the trio left the room. Henry bidded Mara a goodnight while also asking her not to over exert herself. Mon-El stood next to her, leaning down to her height.
"I have to tell Kara" He whispered softly. Mara rolled her eyes at him, "You should have told her months ago" She replied lightly with a soft scowl. Mon-El pouted at her, "Seriously?" He questioned her. Mara stopped her typing as she turned her head to Mon-El. "No matter how I feel about it, she's my mother and I don't want to see her get hurt. Either you tell her before she finds out on her own" Mara warned him, her eyes a light violet. Mon-El nodded, moving away from Mara slowly. He gulped as he patted her shoulder, "Night little lady" He kissed the top of her head.
"Night" Mara responded bluntly as she typed away on the computer.
~~~

Mara smacked Mon-El on the head. "You didn't tell her!" She hissed violently at him. Mon-El rubbed where she hit him, "It wasn't the right time" he argued back, still a little shocked Mara hit him so hard. Mara glared at him, "You running out of time" She snapped at him. "You hurt Kara, I hurt you" She warned him before walking over to the main computer deck where Kara, Alex and J'onn waited.

J'onn looked at Mara expectantly, "What did you find?" He asked her. Mara tapped the round table, a hologram of the ship appeared. "The ship is from the same solar system as Krypton. It's a Tholani travel cruiser, built to hold up to three hundred thousand beings. It has a complex security system and its own trans-teleportain beam" Mara explained her findings.

J'onn was satisfied with the information Mara found, Alex smiling with pride at her niece. Kara beamed with pride, "Well done sweetie" Her voice made Mara blush slightly. "Thanks Kara" She smiled softly.

"The clock is ticking" J'onn mused lightly. Kara nodded, "Well, I think it's time we give the noobs the old Supergirl welcome" She shrugged, walking to the balcony with Mon-El following her. "I'm coming with you" Mon-El told her, only for Kara to laugh him off. Mara watched as Kara flew off, walking up to Mon-El.

"How do you want it? Punching or thrown from a building" Mara asked calmly. Mon-El sighed, "The first one" He sighed in defeat. Mara nodded before returning to Alex and J'onn. Henry joined the small watch party, listening to Kara through her comms.

"All right, Supergirl, what are we working with?" J'onn asked Kara. Mara stood in between Alex and Mon-El, her hands reaching for her necklace. She glanced at Mon-El for a moment, seeing his anxiety take hold. She reached out and took his hand in hers. Mon-El didn't react to the movement. Mara usually took his hand while at the bar or sitting down watching a movie. It was her own little way of grounding him. Whatever that meant.

'Looks like it's taken a few bumps and bruises' Kara answered, her confidence not wearing off as she came face to face with the giant ship. 'I'm going to approach' Kara added.

"Copy that. Proceed with caution" J'onn supported his weight on the table. Mara's grip tightened, Mon-El looking down at the girl, her eyes a vivid light blue. He squeezed her hand, running his thumb up and down to soothe her.

'Any idea where the front door is on this thing?' Kara asked out loud before the sound of something firing followed.

Mara froze in her place, her eyes closed shut as the sounds of Kara's labouring breaths pierced her mind. 'I'm assuming that wasn't friendly fire' Kara commented with a small smile, Mara smiling at her softly.

"Supergirl, watch out!" Mon-El walked away from Mara's grip, seeing Kara's tracker plummeting on the screen. Rapid beeping made Mara open her eyes, the image of the red symbol plummeting made her heart jump into her throat

"J'onn, she's losing altitude" Alex spoke urgently. Mara walked closer to the monitor, trying to focus on her own breathing.

'I'm trapped!' Kara shouted.

"I'm going up there" J'onn decided, walking towards the balcony. "Right behind you" Mon-El nodded, already following J'onn.

'No, no. Wait! Wait, I can do it' Kara stopped them. She grunted for a few minutes, falling faster to the Earth with each one. 'Come on!' Kara seethed.

Mara's eyes didn't leave the screen as the red symbol representing Kara's position got closer to the ground. Seeing the symbol begin to rise up made Mara relax more. She turned to Mon-El, her face dropping. "Don't you-" Mara began to hiss.

"Stop! Stop!" Mon-El cut her off, "Stand down! This is Mon-El of Daxam. To the invaders, I will relinquish myself" He stated. Mara smacked his head. Hard. "Ow!" He moaned before blocking another hit from the young kryptontonian. "I know your not the brightest but how fucking stupid are you!" Mara hissed.

Mon-El began to walk to the balcony, "I have a weird feeling about this, and I don't want Kara to get hurt" He explained loosely to Mara. She grabbed his wrist, stopping him for a moment. "By these invaders or by you?" Mara questioned him.

Before the Daxamite could answer, Kara flew in with just as much confusion as her daughter. "Mon-El, what are you doing?" She questioned her boyfriend. "I'm going up there" he answered. Mara rolled her eyes at him as she followed the two grown adults. "No, no. They literally just tried to kill me" Kara reminded him as they walked up the stairs, "How do you know they won't shoot you on sight?". Mon-El stopped and turned to Kara, "I don't, okay, but they want me. This is my decision" He sighed.

"It's a stupid one" Mara commented, crossing her arms. Mon-El only shook his head. "Hey, we picked up a honing signal on a teleportation beam" Alex called out as she and J'onn walked up to the staircase. "The ship is locking onto our coordinates now. We'll have back up ready if you need us" J'onn added.

"Are you sure about this?" Kara asked him, looking more scared than worried. Mon-El cupped her face, his eyes soft as they looked upon his amazing girlfriend. "I'll be okay" He whispered softly before kissing Kara.

Once they separated, Mon-El looked over at Mara, her eyes cold as she walked over to him. "Don't get yourself killed" She muttered. Mon-El smiled softly, before he had a chance to turn around, Mara ran into him. Mon-El stumbled back as bit as Mara's arms wrapped around his middle. "I mean it, you have to come back" She mumbled into his shirt as the older alien took a few steps back.

Kissing her head softly, "I promise little lady" Mon-El hugged Mara back. Moving away as the yellow beam shone around Mon-El. Mara felt her body swerve as Kara ran to Mon-El, not thinking twice as her own hand grabbed the red cape.

Stumbling into Kara's back, Mara felt the greatest urge to vomit. "What the..." Mara trailed off as she looked around the space. It was dark, the air felt odd as she breathed not to mention the crowd of people in dark grey cloaks. "Why did you follow me?" Mon-El hissed at Kara, unaware of Mara's presence.

"I didn't want you to come up here by yourself" Kara argued back, quick to check on Mara as she stepped away from her cape. Mon-El mentally freaked once he noticed Mara, "Well, maybe I wanted to come up here by myself" Mon-El replied, looking at all the cloaked people. Kara, still looking at Mon-El with confusion and anger, didn't seem bothered. "Why would you want to beam yourself up to an unknown spacecraft?" She exclaimed. "'Cause, stuff..." Mon-El lost the words as more people came to light.

Mara wedged herself between the bickering adults, her hands finding something to hold onto. "Uh...Mon-El?" She squeaked as her hands wrapped around both Kara and Mon-El respectively. Kara tightened her grip on Mara's hand as she looked around them slightly on guard.

"Are they bowing to us?" Kara questioned out loud. Mon-El tensed up as a female voice called out his name. "Mon-El?" The woman called out. She was in a black suit, her hair a dark brown with streaks of grey. On her forehead was a crown of sorts as she looked at Mon-El with a sadness Mara had seen before. The same sadness that Kara held when she told her the truth.

"Mother? Father?" Mon-El let out a shaky breath, walking a few steps away from Kara and Mara. "My son" The man behind the woman smiled from cheek to cheek. The woman walked towards Mon-El with wide arms, "We finally found you. At long last" The woman hugged him tightly.

"I thought you were dead" Mon-El seemed tense, not hugging the woman back. The man walked slowly towards them, "We are very much alive, my son" He hugged Mon-El as the woman let him go. Mara furrowed her eyebrows at them, they were nothing like Mon-El described them.

The father looked at Kara and Mara with a neutral smile, not forced like his wife's. "My apologies, Kryptonian, if you were hurt before" His voice was like ice water, refreshing for a moment in the awkward silence but not even that could hide the cold that followed. "We were only defending ourselves against your attack on our ship".

Kara let out a chuckle, "Attack?" She questioned them, "I seem to recall you shooting first". Mara felt the tension between the two mothers, the stares filled with hatred and mutual disrespect. Mon-El's mother seemed eerily calm, "Shall we go through the entire history of Krypton's carnage?" She questioned Kara, her words piercing through the heroine.

Thankfully, Mon-El stepped between them. He turned to his parents, "Mother, father, this is Kara Zor-El" He explained to them gently. "Hero of Earth" Mara added, a surge of vigilance hitting her as she stepped in front of Kara. Mon-El turned to Kara, guilt in his eyes, "And, Kara, these are my parents" He looked like the weight of the galaxy was on his shoulder as Mon-El braced himself.

"Queen Rhea and King Lar Gand of Daxam"

Mon-El admitted his deception, his voice strained as Kara's face went from slight confusion to anger and betrayal. She opened her mouth to speak, yet the words died on her lips. Taking her hand, Mara's eyes a swirl of dark red and dark yellow. "Which makes you..." Mara stopped herself, the feeling of lying to Kara about this hitting her deep. The feeling of her stomach made her want to hurl as she finished her sentence.

"The Prince of Daxam"

Queen Rhea placed her palm on Mon-El's cheek, "Our Prince" She admired him fondly. Mara turned to Kara, her eyes shifting to mirror the sadness her mother felt. She held out her hand gently. Kara gave her a quick yet soft smile as she took her daughter's hand and gave it a small squeeze.

Queen Rhea however, was not done singing Mon-El's praises it seemed. "Thank the Gods you're alive" She announced to everyone around them. Mara made a face, there was just something about her voice that just blegh with Mara. She stepped back from her son, holding her arms wide open.

"And returned to us at last" Lar Gan cried out, "So, tonight, we feast!"

Usually people would cheer at the mention of a free party. Mara looked around her, dead silence even from Mon-El. "Oh, oh, I can't stay" Mon-El informed his mother, the woman looking appalled. Mon-El quickly began to explain himself, "I'm also a hero. Well, trying to be with Kara's help and... Anyway, we have to get..." Mon-El trialled off as he walked closer to the blonde kryptonians.

"Son, you can't leave" His father spoke up, concern falling onto his face. "We've searched the stars to find you" He explained to Mon-El with more emotion than his wife. Mara sucked in a sharp breath as Rhea came closer to her and Kara, a forced smile on her face as she took Mara in with her deranged eyes. "And we must get to know Kara as well as..." She raised her eyebrows at Mara, who wanted to hide in Kara's cape until they returned to the DEO.

Kara chuckled nervously, "My daughter, Mara" She carefully introduced her, her thumb rubbing Mara's knuckles softly. "And I would love to know more about you" She smiled at the Queen of Daxam. Rhea seemed pleased with Kara's willingness to stay on board their ship. "I knew you wouldn't stand in the way of a family reunion" Rhea praised her decision, "We have much to discuss" She commented before leaving the room with her arm around Mon-El's as she guided him away.

Kara and Mara followed them, "No shit" Mara muttered as the people around them stared at their movements.

~~~
The dining room was eerie. Servants of the King and Queen outlined the room with dark clothing hiding their faces. Lar Gand and Rhea sat at opposite ends of the table, Mon-El seated on the left of his father while Kara and Mara were seated on the other side. Tense wasn't even the word to describe the room. Mon-El looked trapped, almost claustrophobic as his parents tried to talk with him. He kept looking at Kara, eyes full of guilt and then he looked at Mara.
Mara was doing her best to prevent the tears coming through, her hands occupied with the hem of her shirt, then her hair and back to her shirt. Her eyes were an abnormal blue, almost glowing compared to her natural eye colour. It didn't go unnoticed by Kara and Mon-El, especially by Mon-El's parents.
Rhea sipped her drink, "Why are you doing that?" She narrowed her eyes at Mara. She looked up at the woman, opening her mouth to speak before closing it again. Kara noticed her hands beginning to tremble from the corner of her eye. Taking her hand, Kara turned to Rhea. "Her emotions physically manifest through her eyes when the emotion is strong enough. It's harmless" She explained with a tight smile before looking back at Mara. Her soft smile calmed her, Mara squeezing her hand back gently.
"Where's that appetite of yours?" Lar Gand asked Mon-El, his tone cheery in hopes to improve Mon-El's mood. "Aren't you happy to see us?" He questioned his son. Mara looked up at Mon-El, he was picking at his food with a sour face. "Of course" Mon-El cleared his throat, "Of course I am" He repeated. Mara kicked him gently under the table, giving him a serious look.
She'd seen this before, with the kids being reunited with their parents back at the home. The realisation that maybe they weren't as great as memory served them. But still, at least the kids back in Midvale had decent respect.
"Or have you been distracted by Kryptonians in capes since you fled Daxam?" Rhea remarked, the tension between her and Kara becoming thicker. Mara gave Mon-El a hard look, her eyes shifting between Rhea and Kara. "How did you find me?" Mon-El spat out, his mood evident in his tone sharp and cold.
"We heard your beacon" Lar Gand smiled brightly, "The transmission was incomplete, it brought us to this galaxy. Then it was just a matter of gathering the bread crumbs" He explained happily to his son. Mon-El seemed to hold regret as the memory of his distress beacon came to mind. Rhea, who was sneaking cold glances at the Kryptonians decided to speak. "We had our greatest success at Slavers' Moon" She mused with a very faux sweet tone. She joined her hands together on the table, "We heard from one of our Dominator ambassadors that you've been freeing slaves" Rhea's tone reminded Mara of a social worker she used to know.
Laura, she was so condescending towards the kids and teens especially when there were potential foster meetings. Mara shuddered as the memory of Laura ripping into her after she 'bombed another potential family interview'.
"Yes, imagine our surprise at your heroics" Lar Gand's voice came across hollow, Mara could feel his displeasure in the air. Rhea looked over at Mara and Kara with a frown, "Your influence, I'm sure" Her tone was ice.
Kara glared back at her, seeing how uncomfortable she was making her daughter. "We freed them from being treated like animals" She shot back, her hand gripping Mara's tighter. "They weren't goods to be traded, they were people, someone's kid" Mara spoke up, "Just like how Mon-El is your son" She added.
Rhea rolled her eyes at them, "There's that famous Kryptonian exaggeration" She dismissed the arguments. Mara scoffed at her, "Let me guess, it's the famous Daxamite arrogance?" Her words made both Kara and Mon-El snicker, the latter pretending to cough as he received looks from his parents. Lar Gand sighed at his son, "Mon-El, you remember how well your servants were treated at the palace" He hoped to remind his son.
"Just like family"
Mara's fork snapped in her hand, the clattering of the metal grabbing everyone's attention. Mon-El looked at Mara, worried as her eyes shifted to a deep violet. "Little lady, you okay?" Mon-El hissed at Mara as she looked at his mother with pure rage. "You think stealing people from their families is okay? You think that saying you don't treat them like utter shit is enough reason to support slavery and kidnapping?!" She growled at Rhea, slamming her fist on the table. Rhea shook her head at Mara, "We liberated them from greater hardship" Rhea looked at Mara as if she was merely a five year old, "We gave them a path" She added.
Mara's eyes had begun to glow violet, Rhea's words only adding fuel to fire. Before she could fight back, Kara placed a hand on her shoulder and gently brought Mara's chair closer to her. On cue, Mon-El began to speak hoping Mara might be able to take a moment to breathe. "How did you escape the blasts?" He questioned his parents, "I thought you were dead" He admitted melancholing, a feeling that Mara and Kara knew all too well.
"When Krypton exploded, the Kryptonite rained down, killing everything. We had to get off planet to persevere" Lar Gand explained, "And to find you. So that we might return, now that the atmosphere is hospitable" Rhea continued, holding her son's hand softly.
Mara peaked up at this, why would Mon-El go back? "To make Daxam great again" She smiled. Mon-El looked down as he spoke, voice low as he did. "Daxam was never great" He corrected his mother. Rhea became cold, her hand withdrawing from view.
She seemed angry as she turned to Kara and Mara, "Has the Kryptonians rubbed off on you so much so that you have forgotten?" She asked her son with such coldness. Mara and Kara turned to the Queen and then to Mon-El for his reaction. Mon-El's face went still, eyes piercing through his mother's own.
The face was familiar to Mara, it was the same one she saw when he spoke to Jeremiah outside Kara's apartment. She looked at him, the tables turned as she silently pleaded with him not to react. "I know you're fond of a pretty face, but be reasonable" Rhea continued, her feelings towards Kara being very open. Kara kept a smile on her face, not letting Rhea's cruel words hit her. "Well, I think what he might find novel about me is integrity" She countered Rhea, leaving a sour look on her face.
Lar Gand spoke up, before anything more could be said. "You know, let's not argue about worlds of old" He smiled tightly, "Why don't you tell us of your journey and how you survived?" He suggested a change in topic. Mara's breath hitched at the suggestion, eyes trained on Mon-El as they shifted light yellow. Kara's small laugh echoed in her ears, "Yes. I would love to hear about that" She remarked as she took a bite of her food. Mon-El looked at Mara and then back at Kara, "I'd rather not" He stated.
Mara bit the inside of her cheek, "You don't have to Mon-El" She spoke up, her voice timid as she began to fiddle with her necklace. Kara furrowed her eyebrows for a moment, her own ears picking up on Mara's racing heartbeat. "No, no, Prince, by all means" She took another bite of her food, "Please tell us of your heroic escape" Kara egged him on.
Mon-El sighed heavily, both elbows on the table as he pressed his hands together. Mara looked at him softly, "Mon-El, you really don't have to tell them" Mara spoke before catching herself. Kara looked at her daughter suspiciously, her heart rate still racing. She looked at Mon-El, a small glare escaping as she spoke coldly.
"You told Mara?" Kara asked Mon-El, her voice softer then it had been the entire time since they boarded the ship. Mara looked down at her feet, heart pounding in her ears. "I'm sorry" Mara whispered with tears forming in her eyes, avoiding everyone's gaze.
Mon-El broke the silence, telling everyone the real story of how he escaped. His personal servant commandeered a kryptonian pod, allowing him to escape to Earth. Mara did her best not to cry vocally, yet the tears fell onto her hands.
She felt Kara's hand on her shoulder, "Come on little one, please, excuse us, I have business to attend to on Earth" Kara spoke coldly to the rulers of Daxam. Mara got up with her mother, "Thank you for your hospitality your majesties" Mara smiled softly before following her mother out of the room.
They were beamed back to the DEO, Mara hugging herself as she walked over to Kara. "Kara, I'm so sorry. I didn't want to keep this from you I swear" Mara hiccuped, unaware that Henry was waiting for her to the side. Mara felt her body betray her as she sobbed, "I wasn't being cruel, keeping this from you. I promise you Kara I-" Kara cut her off, hugging her daughter closely. She gently soothed her, kissing the top of Mara's head.
She looked down at her, the cold look gone as she wiped Mara's tears. "I know little one, I'm not angry at you at all" Kara reassured her. Mara nodded, still clinging to Kara like a lifeline. "I told him to tell you, I did" Mara explained to her, Kara keeping her as close as possible.
"I know little one, I know" Kara held her as Mon-El walked closer to them. He tried to be optimistic, "So, you survived the first dinner with the fam..." He clapped his hands. Kara glared at him, shielding her daughter lightly. "You're a liar" Kara stated, her cold glare returning as she looked at Mon-El. He sighed, dropping his shoulders. "I'm sorry, okay?" He apologised, "Can you really blame me for wanting to just be Mon-El, a regular guy from Daxam?" He tried to save himself, not expecting it to backfire as Kara scoffed and folded her arms.
"With how you feel about Daxamites, if you had known that I was the crown prince, would you even talk to me?" He asked her, knowing the propaganda they both were raised with. Kara glared at him, "You didn't even give me the chance" Kara spat at him, "You made my own daughter keep your secret! How could you do that to her!" She snapped at him.
Mon-El saw how distraught Mara looked, his own heart strings twisting that he was the cause behind it. "I tried to tell you so many times, okay? I really did, Mara was pushing me to do so!" He added. Kara was in pure disbelief, "What, is that supposed to make this better?" She argued back. "Me being the prince doesn't change anything. Not how I feel about you..." Mon-El tried to convince Kara that he was no different than the person she had fallen for.
Kara took a step back, "This changes everything" She exclaimed, her hands flying as she did. "It's bad enough you lied, but you being the prince?" Kara reminded him, "I thought you were just born on a cruel planet, but you lead it. You benefited from its cruelty" laying the facts made Mon-El silent, the reality of who he was hitting him more as Kara went on.
"What about that Kryptonian Emissary? Your guard...Do you even feel guilty?" Kara asked, doing her best to control her own emotions. Mon-El was quiet for a moment, "Of course I do" He answered Kara, but even he knew it wasn't enough. Kara only gave a curt nod, "I can't even look at you" She told him.
Kara looked at Mara, "You wanna come home?" She asked her. Mara looked over at Henry, "Can Henry come?" She asked her timidly. Kara nodded before beckoning the young boy towards them. "Come on kids, let's get out of here" She smiled through her pain.
~~~

Henry gave Mara a look, hands folded against his chest. "Spill" He stated like a fact as Mara sat on the bed. Mara rolled her eyes dramatically, "No, super hearing remember?" Mara sighed. Henry smiled at her, eyes glowing red as he took her hand.

The room around her changed. Vines climbing the walls and her bed turned into a wooden floor with wild flowers blooming in the gaps. Mara felt at peace for a moment. "Our treehouse" Mara smiled as the memories of the safe place Celeste had made for them came to life.

"I miss her too" Henry whispered, looking over at a painting Mara had done a few years ago. It was a woman, around her late teens early twenties. Her curly hair was entwined with wisps of colours, a serene expression on her face. Mara remembered her, Henry's big sister and hers also.

"Celeste would know what to do" Mara sighed, "She'd help me understand all this". Tears filling her eyes. Henry wrapped his arms around Mara, "It's okay to be scared. But Kara is your mom" He spoke gently. Mara leaned into his hug, tears streaming down her face. "I should be happy, Kara was protecting me from CADMUS and even when I was mad at her I still loved her" Mara sobbed gently. Henry held her close as they looked at the painting of their big sister.

"You should tell her" Henry answered her invisible question. Mara looked up at him, eyebrows furrowed at the answer. "Even when you're pissed, you still love Kara like how you love me and Celeste. She's family M, you have what you've been wishing for your whole life" Henry exclaimed.

Mara laughed at his dramatics, realising how much she missed her brother. "We'll make her proud Henry, you know that right?" Mara spoke up. Henry looked at her then the painting. "Why did she never tell me I was a Martian?" Henry asked. Mara shrugged, "She was probably protecting you from the White Martins, trust me they are bastards" Mara shuddered at the memories.

The room began to fade as Henry yawned. Mara was quick to lay him down on the bed and covered a blanket over him. "Night Henry, I love you" Mara whispered as he fell asleep.

~~~
It had been hours since Henry tired himself out with the mindscape.
Mara sat on her bed, watching as Henry snored through the night. She couldn't sleep, it was impossible. Mara could hear Henry's heart beating softly, the traffic outside the window and even the faint buzz of Kara's television as an old film played.
Slowly Mara left her room, checking back to make sure Henry was okay before leaving. Mara walked into the main room of the apartment, Kara was curled up on the couch watching some black and white film. Kara turned to Mara, fresh tears staining her skin. "What are you doing up?" Kara asked, her voice strained as she tried to wipe away the evidence of her sadness.
Mara shrugged, staying at the entrance, "Everything is too loud" She answered, looking away from her mother. Kara moved the blanket, patting down on the couch, "Come here" She smiled softly. Mara walked over, sliding in next to Kara. She wrapped her hand around Kara's body and rested her head on her shoulder. "I'm sorry about keeping Mon-El's secret" Mara apologised again. Kara kissed her head, Mara had been apologising ever since they got back.
"Sweetie, I'm not angry at you. It was Mon-El's secret to share not yours" Kara repeated to her, fingers brushing through her hair. Mara didn't respond, allowing Kara to hold her tightly as the film kept playing. "Still, I don't want you to think that I was trying to get back at you for not telling me your Supergirl or..."Mara cut herself off, still adjusting to the fact Kara was actually her birth mother.
Kara felt Mara's hesitation, her body tensing up and her heartbeat becoming slightly frantic. "It's okay, I know you need time" Kara spoke softly, kissing Mara's head as she did. "And whatever you decide, I'll support you". Mara smiled, finding herself nuzzling closer to Kara as her eyes felt heavy. "Good night Kara" Mara muttered, eyes closing slowly. Kara looked down at her daughter, her own heart swelling up as Mara fell asleep next to her. "Good night inah" Kara whispered.
~~~

Mara stood next to J'onn as everyone tried to find Winn's missing girlfriend Lyra. Apparently Lyra had him break into an art museum to steal priceless art and framed him for it. "Why art! Who would want to hide such poetic glimpses into the mind only to hide it from the world!" Mara exclaimed, leaning her head on J'onn's shoulder.

Everyone looked at her, no pity, only a strange worry about her priorities. James looked at her and then at Kara, "A mini Kara?" He questioned, remembering a similar argument they had, "that's nice" He finished, earning a look from Mara. "You think stealing art that has survived decades after its creation!" Mara exclaimed. Henry laughed at her, "Mara, she set Winn up for robbery" He reminded her gently.

Mara walked over to Winn, looking up at him. "I love you" She told him, "But she stole a Van Gogh, that's more precious than a few years in prison" Mara held her hands up in defense. Winn only sighed. James patted his back lightly. "Sorry bud" He tried to cheer Winn up weakly.

Mara shrugged, "Could be worse, she could have set you up for murder". Henry hit her in the arm, "Mara I love you, shut up" He told her with a serious look on his face. Mara scoffed with a scowl on her face. "Winn, who are her people?" Kara asked as she passed the two teens. "Valerians" Winn answered. "Valerians can't be seen in photographs, or on security cameras" Mara spoke up. Henry looked at her, "How'd you know that?" He asked her. Mara turned to him, "Remember Celeste's roommate, Melia?" Mara asked him. Henry nodded, "Oh! She was always missing in the annual photos Ms Cordial took!" He connected the dots about their former foster friend. Mara turned back to everyone, "Bet there's no picture of her in her amnesty file either" Mara smirked as Alex searched through the file.

"She's right" Alex confirmed.

Winn let out a dramatic sigh, resting on the table. "So, I have an invisible girlfriend" He stated like a sad puppy. "So she used your tech skills to get into the museum, and then she pulled the disappearing act to make the grab" James explained the situation. Alex seemed to confirm that, "Well, it looks like this wasn't her first time either".

News articles popped up on screen. Mara let out a dramatic gasp, "How could she!" Mara exclaimed, falling into Henry's arms. He rolled his eyes at her, "You need a life sis" He grumbled at her. Mara rolled her eyes at him. "A Rodin stolen from the Modern Arts and Cultural Museum and an original Warhol taken from the Art Institute of Metropolis!" Mara read out, eyes turning violet, "The audacity of her" She huffed, crossing her arms.

Everyone continued the search for Lyra, Kara excited that her, James and Winn were working together again as the 'Super Friends'. Mara looked at Henry, "Were we that corny?" She asked him as Kara apologised for using her strength a bit too much on James and Winn's hands. Henry rolled his eyes, "Three Musketeers?" He brought up the childhood name they had. Mara pursed her lips, "Yeah I thought so" She shrugged before watching Alex follow Kara.

"Looks like my cue to be an annoying niece" She smiled before Henry turned to J'onn. Mara walked up next to Kara while Alex was on the other side, "Maybe you should sit this one out" Alex suggested to her sister, seeing that she was ignoring the elephant in the room. Kara let out a raspberry, "Are you kidding? No!" Kara spoke looking at her sister with a big fake ass smile. "I'm ready to Nancy Drew the crap out of this!" Kara exclaimed, waving her hands in the air.

Mara rolled her eyes at Kara, "Okay, enough with the over-enthusiastic deflecting, trust me it gets you nowhere" She pointed out, shutting down the faux act Kara was putting up. Alex smiled at her niece, "We know you're upset with Mon-El" Alex sighed, seeing the despair on Kara's face at the mention of the boy who had chipped at her heart. "And you have every right to be" Alex told her, grabbing onto Kara's shoulders, "Okay? Own it" Alex tried to encourage Kara into letting her emotions out rather than bottled up until she got home and Mara was asleep.

Kara let out a tired groan, "I just, uh... I hate him right now" She gritted her teeth. Mara bit her lip, knowing that she could have spared Kara some of the pain by telling her. Alex nodded at Kara's frustrations, "I get it, and I hate that he hurt you, but relationships have their ups and downs, Kara" She tried to explain but Kara shook her head, "Yeah, but this is more than a down, Alex" She spat out, feeling her body getting all riled up. "I don't even know who he is anymore" Kara admitted, her voice rasping as she did. Alex looked at her sister with pity, no one had this effect on her in such a long time.

Kara pinched the bridge of her nose, "Do you know why Daxam was such a party planet?" She asked her sister and daughter. Alex and Mara looked at her, ready for the explanation. "Because the Royal Family kept their subjects drunk and distracted, so they didn't recognize how oppressed they were" Kara stated, the sadness for the subjects of Mon-El's home coating her words, "Mon-El was a part of that" Kara fought back her tears. Mara felt even worse than before, biting the inside of her cheek.

Alex sighed at the reason why Kara hated the sister planet of her home, "Kara, maybe Mon-El is an evil prince" She shrugged, catching her sister's undivided attention. "But maybe he's just a guy who's ashamed of his past, and he's looking for a fresh start" Alex offered the side of the story that Kara couldn't see with her broken heart. "I mean, he adores you Kara, and the way he is with Mara? That doesn't seem like a cruel prince" She pointed out, "Talk to him, okay? Give him a chance to explain" Alex asked her, a soft smile on her face as she hugged her little sister.

"Kara Zor-El, Mara"

Mara looked to the balcony, seeing DEO agents point their guns as Queen Rhea appeared in front of them. Kara was quick to step in front of her daughter, eyes trained on Rhea's appearance as guns were pointed at her. "I need to speak with you" she announced. Mara stepped to the side, looking at the queen suspiciously. What the hell does she want?

"Your new world is quite stunning" Rhea broke the silence.

It took a minute for Kara to settle the DEO agents and even longer for Kara to allow Mara near the Daxamite. Mara sat on the edge of the balcony, watching as Rhea and Kara stood awkwardly, watching the city below.

"Like Daxam used to be" She sighed, remembering her planet fondly. Rhea turned to Kara and her daughter, a tight smile on her face. "I didn't thank you earlier for looking after my son" Rhea spoke firmly. "A Kryptonian taking care of a Daxamite" Rhea let out a chuckle at the thought, "And I thought I'd seen it all" She mused the idea that was actually a reality. Kara didn't seem to buy her act, "But you didn't come here all this way just to thank me" She pointed out.

Rhea froze up for a moment, seeing her little facade wasn't going to help. "No, I didn't" She admitted, "I need your help" Rhea started, gaining the interest of Mara and Kara. Mara turned her body to Rhea, bending her knees to her chest as Rhea continued. "Daxam is a wasteland" Rhea stated, "Our people are scattered across the universe. We need to bring them home, rebuild what your people destroyed".

Kara gave the woman a questionable look. Rhea sighed, "I don't say it to offend" She apologised in her own way. Kara shook her head at the Daxamite, "No, no. You're right" She corrected her, "Krypton made horrible mistakes I can admit it" Kara spoke as she chose to be the bigger person. Rhea was stunned at Kara's willingness to accept the sins of her planet's history with Rhea's. "That's more than I expected" Rhea admitted, her voice in shock at Kara's words. Kara shook her head, knowing that Rhea didn't come here to trade stories about the past.

"What do you want from us?" Kara asked her, patting Mara's knee to ask her to come down off the ledge. Mara hopped down from behind Kara, walking around her to face Rhea. "Our planet died on my and my husband's watch. For our people to rise again, they need a future" Rhea was vague, something about her tone making Mara skeptical. "That doesn't explain why you wanted to talk with us, spit it out" Mara crossed her arms as her stomach began to crawl up her throat.

Rhea readied herself, not a good sign. "Mon-El is young. He can be the face of that future" Rhea answered. Mara took a step away from her, eyes dark grey as she looked at Queen Rhea. Kara furrowed her eyebrows, "You want to take Mon-El back to Daxam?" She questioned Rhea, hoping she misunderstood her request. "Would you rather he stay here and learn by degrees that he's not good enough for you?" Rhea challenged her.

Kara let out a small awkward laugh, "You don't know me or my daughter" She stated. Rhea scoffed lightly at them, "I know your kind. I know what your integrity means" Her eyes landed on Mara for a moment, the young girl looking at Rhea with a small glare of her own. "He's Daxamite royalty and you're starting to despise him for it" She looked back at Kara, "I don't despise anyone" The blonde spat back. Despite her anger for his lies, Kara couldn't despise him for it not truly.

Rhea's firm belief that all Kryptonians were self-entitled martyrs really showed in her words. Mara felt her anger bubbling at the mother's request. Why should they convince Mon-El that going back to Daxam's a good idea? Mara remembered when Mon-El told her the truth, how ashamed he had been that Daxam wasn't as perfect as he remembered.

"No" Mara stated, her tone sharp and her glare stronger. Rhea seemed taken back at her, "Excuse me?" She gawked. Mara rolled her eyes, "We're not helping you take Mon-El away, if he doesn't want to talk with you then he has every right to do so" She snapped at her. Kara could see the hints of violet in her eyes, reaching out for her.

"Little one, take a moment" She spoke softly, her voice more soothing towards her daughter than Rhea. Mara shook her head, gently pulling away from Kara. "I am not going to force Mon-El to speak to you, let alone leave!" Mara felt her throat close up before walking away. She knew she'd say something she'd regret if she didn't.

"Don't leave" Mara stated as she walked into the med bay. Mon-El furrowed his eyebrows, he just had Kara come in and tell him to speak with his parents, to realize he was no longer the last of his kind. Mon-El didn't speak as Mara walked up to him.

She looked around the room, eyes scanning for others. "You can't go back to Daxam, it's not you. Not anymore" Mara continued, "I don't want you to leave" She muttered. Mara shut her eyes as she felt them water up, her hands clenched tightly. Mon-El stepped closer, the small sounds of Mara not trying to cry making his heart hurt.

"Little Lady" Mon-El cooed, bringing Mara close to his chest. Mara let out a small sob, "I've seen kids go back to horrible parents" She managed to speak, clinging to Mon-El tightly. She looked up at him, "I need you to stay, who else can I make fun of at the dive bar" Tears began to well up. Mon-El tightened his grip around her. "Don't cry Mara, you shouldn't cry over me" He rubbed her back.

Mara hit him in the chest, looking up at him with a pout and vivid blue eyes. "I don't care if you and Kara aren't together but I care about you. You're part of my life and I can cry about you if I feel like it" Mara glared at him as the tears welled up. Mon-El shook his head, kissing the top of Mara's gently. "You're also a part of my life, a very important part" Mon-El smiled.

"Mara! I need your help!" Winn ran into the room. Mara and Mon-El separated, both giving Winn a look. Winn realised he interrupted a moment, "Sorry but this is like super important" He apologised. Mara sighed, "What do you need me to do?" She questioned him with a hand on her hip.

"Forge a super convincing Van Gogh" Winn shrugged. Mara looked at Winn as if he grew three heads. "Seriously?" Mara questioned him, walking closer. "You want me to forge one of the greatest art pieces in the world to fool some alien art thief?" Mara raised an eyebrow at Winn. The older man winced at her tone, "No biggie?" He regretted the words as soon as they fell out of his mouth.

Mara smirked at him, "Fuck yeah"

Mara could check off forgery on her bucket list after helping Winn's girlfriend Lyra and her brother escape an intergalactic mob. She didn't think it would work but apparently Winn's plan was successful. Now she was trying to fix this device Kara got from a whole different earth.

"Hand me that" Mara didn't look up from the extrapolator. Henry let out a long sigh, "Which one?" He asked her, bored out of his mind. Mara scoffed, "Third one to the left with the...the slanted edge" Mara held out her hand until Henry gave her the right tool. "What is this anyways?" He asked her.

"It's an interdimensional extrapolator" Mara answered as a spark flew. She groaned quickly, sucking her thumb from the small pain before picking it up again. Henry looked at her confused, "M, English please" He begged her. Mara turned to look at him, "This thing can open up portals to the multiverse" She explained.

"No way!" Henry tried to take the extrapolator from Mara before she jerked her hand away from him. "Kara called them breaches, Winn couldn't fix it but I think I just did" Mara smiled before running out of the room. She couldn't wait to gloat that she fixed something Winn couldn't.

"No running Mara!" one of the agents called after her. "Sorry!" Mara called back before bumping into someone. She looked up to see a guy in cuffs, dark hair that was slicked back in a suit. Mara took another step away from him. "Mara, you know not to be running in the halls" Agent Lucas scolded her. Mara nodded, walking around the prisoner as he stared at her with a positive smile.

"Sorry" Mara mumbled, walking away from them. "Don't be Ms Zor-El" The prisoner shouted after her. Mara picked up her pace before walking out to the main floor. Kara smiled at her, dressed in her supersuit. "I fixed the extrapolator" Mara looked back at the prisoner as she handed it to Winn.

"What! So unfair" He whined but Kara looked at her daughter. "You okay little one?" Kara asked her, seeing the specks of dark orange in her daughter's eyes. Mara, who was still looking at the hallway she had just taken, looked at Kara briefly. "I'm good" She squinted before looking at the pair properly. "So when do I get to meet the guy who made this?" Mara smiled. Kara rolled her eyes, "Don't tempt me. 'Cause I could use an...Inter-dimensional, post-break up vacay" Kara's eyes wandered to see Mon-El walking towards them.

Mara's eyes lit up, the bright pink almost glowing as Mon-El gave her a small wave. She smiled at him brightly, waving back at him. Kara didn't miss the way Mara's heartbeat sped up, her eyes glowing or the smile on her face. It wasn't hard to admit that her hiding the truth from her for so long resulted in her daughter bonding with Mon-El.

"Morning, everyone" J'onn's voice bellowed from the balcony, everyone looked up at him. Mara only then noticed the sheer volume of agents around her. "Now, we have a new prisoner coming in today. He's not our typical guest, so look sharp" J'onn explained as Agents Lucas and Riley both walked in with the man Mara had bumped into earlier.

"Oh, there you two are, makes this so much easier" He smiled at Mara and Kara. The older kryptonian was confused at the prisoner's remark. "Who, me?" Kara questioned him, pointing to herself. He nodded gleefully, "Yes, yes, you and the little blondie. Why else do you think I'd let myself be caught? Come on" He waved off his hands while in cuffs, looking at the agents beside him. "She's funny" he commented.

Kara stepped out, carefully shielding Mara without making it obvious. The prisoner's gleeful facade faded as he looked more serious. "I've been looking for you both" He stated before his eyes started to...glow? Mara took a step forward, squinting at him while also wishing she had her glasses. A blue light pulsed through his eyes. She looked up at Kara, seeing the same effect happening.

"Supergirl?" Mara grabbed her wrist as she stepped in front of Kara. She didn't respond, still looking at the prisoner. "Kara?" Mara hissed down low, tugging at her wrist. Kara began to sway back and forth for a moment before falling back. Mara stepped forward to try and catch her when she was yanked back by her arm.

"Prisoner, stand down!" J'onn bellowed.

The prisoner held Mara tightly, a smile on his face. "Let me go!" Mara struggled against his grip. He held the extrapolator in his free hand, "Thank you" He smiled down at Mara. "Drop your weapon and let go of the girl" Alex held her gun in their direction. "Oh, this isn't a weapon. This is part of my brilliant escape" He shrugged at Alex and the other DEO agents.

He pressed the button on the device, a blue swirling portal opening up. "Ladies and gentlemen, this dimension has been so much fun" He acted as if he was closing a show, Mara still trying to escape his grasp. "I've had a blast! But I gotta go chase down the fastest man alive. Toodles!" He jumped back into the portal.

"Mara!" Mon-El and Alex called as the man threw the extrapolator before the portal closed. Kara was unconscious and Mara was taken by who knows what.
