•Volterra•

I. Volterra.

I was silent on the ride to the airport in Seattle. I had turned my phone off. I couldn't think of the trouble I was going to get into when I got back home. All I could think about was getting to Edward in time. Before turning off my phone, I tried calling him, but Alice was right, he must have broken his phone.

Even on the first of our connecting flights, I was silent for a long time. Alice couldn't get me to eat a single thing, and everyone eyed us when neither of us ate on one extremely long flight. But all I could do was blankly stare at the back of the seat in front of me, thinking of Edward Cullen.

After a few hours of not a single spoken word, I slowly turned my head to face Alice. "Have you seen anything?" I asked softly, my voice a hoarse whisper.

Alice pursed her lips for a second and briefly lowered her eyes onto her lap before she looked over at me, shaking her head. "He keeps changing his mind." She muttered hesitantly.

I slowly nodded my head, letting out a shaky breath. "Tell me." I pleaded softly as I stared at her, my eyes teary. A mixture of my tears and the ones Edward can't cry himself. I still felt his aching heart inside my chest. It was a pain like no other.

Alice sighed softly, glancing around at the other occupied passengers on the plane before turning towards me. "A killing spree through the city, attacking the guard, lifting a car over his head in the main square." She informed me in a hushed voice.

"He's trying to expose them to force a reaction," I whispered as I lowered my head, staring down at my lap as I sniffed softly. I closed my eyes as I briefly allowed myself to think back on the whole accident with James. "When James attacked me last year, he said that's how he'd go out if something happened to me," I whispered, my voice cracking as a tear slipped down my cheek. "Forcing the Volturi's hand," I added, sniffing again before wiping away my tears and glancing at Alice. "You said he could feel my emotions...can't he feel me?"

She pursed her lips again as she shook her head, looking annoyed as she stared at the seat in front of her. "If the dogs were blocking me, they could have blocked him and along with the distance..." She muttered softly. "I also don't think he's in the right state of mind to tell the difference between his emotions and yours." She added as she shook her head. "If his heartbreak was strong enough for you to feel it that strongly..." She whispered as she glanced over at me.

If his heartbreak was strong enough for me to actually feel, along with the distance and the wolves...then his heart was truly, utterly, and devastatingly broken. I bit down on my bottom lip, fighting back tears. If I couldn't feel his heartbreak right now, I wouldn't have been able to imagine how much he was hurting. But I know how much he's hurting, and all I could do was pray and hope that I got into him in time.

"If anything happens to Edward...I'm going to kill Jacob Black." I whispered as I lowered my gaze down to my lap again. If I'm too late...if I lose Edward forever, I could never find it in my heart to ever forgive Jacob. How could I forgive him for ripping my heart away? For breaking my soul?

Alice was silent for a second before reaching out and taking my hand into her cold one. She had a troubled look on her face. "I'm sorry for endangering you like this, Ana." She apologized softly, and I glanced at her. "Your mom is also gonna be pretty angry when she finds the note." She added.

I sighed, figuring as much. I shook my head as I wiped at my nose with the back of my hand. "I can't let him kill himself," I whispered. "And he won't believe you unless he sees me. He's stubborn like that." I added softly as I let out a shaky sigh. My eyebrows furrowed for a second as I looked back at Alice. "Why does he think I'm dead?"

"Someone must have called and told him what I saw." She suggested as her eyebrows furrowed. She was adamant that no one uttered a word to Edward until she could see for herself what had happened to me. Someone spoke when they shouldn't have.

"Yeah, and Jake didn't make that any easier," I added softly as I sat back in my seat, staring out of the small window next to me as silent tears ran down my cheeks. I briefly closed my eyes and prayed that I would be in time. That I could save Edward. The other piece of my heart.

On our connecting flight to Rome, Alice tensed up next to me, blankly staring at the seat in front of her. She had that familiar distant look in her eyes. I got scared for a second as I stared at her.

"Alice, what do you see?" I asked softly as I reached out to grab onto her cold arm, staring at her with furrowed eyebrows, my heart pounding inside my chest.

"He's going to ask them Volturi to kill him." She whispered as her lips parted, and the same scared look in my eyes flashed over her golden ones. She slowly turned to face me. "He's going to tell them about you, to push them." She added. "He'll tell them to kill him because you died." She informed me. I swallowed at the lump in my throat as I looked down at my lap, my eyes glossing over with tears once again. "They're deliberating but they've decided to tell him no. They're interested in him; they think his talent could be useful." She explained. "They're going to offer him a place with them."

"What does he say?" I asked softly as I continued to stare at my lap with teary and blurry eyes, fiddling around with my trembling hands.

"I can't see that yet, but I'll bet it's colorful." She replied with a shake of her head as she looked over at me. "This is the first good news, the first break. They're intrigued, they truly don't want to destroy him. ' Wasteful' that's the word Aro will use. That may be enough to force him to get creative. The longer he spends on his plans, the more time we have." She assured me as she reached out and took one of my hands into hers. But it was everything but assuring. All that could assure me now was seeing his beautiful face, knowing he was safe.

I remained quiet for a very long time, until I noticed Alice tense up beside me once again. My head snapped to the side and I silently watched her for a second. "Alice?" I whispered wearily. My nerves couldn't handle this anymore, not knowing what was coming next. "What's happening?"

"He asked." She informed me and I sucked in a sharp breath. "They've told him no." She assured as she shook her head.

I slowly nodded my head, an ounce of relief filling me. This didn't mean too much yet, because now he was just going to try and force their hands. "What's he going to do?" I asked her hesitantly as I raised my eyebrows.

"It was chaotic at first." She replied softly as her eyebrows furrowed deeply, her gaze stuck on the seat in front of her."I was only getting flickers at first, he was changing his plans so fast." She explained as she shook her head.

My eyebrows furrowed as I stared at her. "What plans?" I asked softly. I needed to know what he was going to do. I needed to know his plans. I needed to know his decision.

"There was a bad hour." She hesitantly replied as she briefly looked over at me. She couldn't really meet my eyes. I could see the pity and sadness in those golden eyes of hers. "He decided to go hunting. In the city. It got very close, but he changed his mind last minute." She whispered.

I lowered my eyes again. He's never wanted to be like that. He wanted to be better, for himself and Carlisle. My heart ached at the thought of him losing himself to this extent. My heart ached at the thought of how close he came to being the thing he hated. "He wouldn't want to lose himself...to disappoint Carlisle." I softly voiced my thoughts as I shook my head. "Do we have enough time?" I asked as I looked back at Alice.

She sighed softly and briefly pursed her lips. "I'm hoping so, if he sticks to his latest decision." She replied as she shifted in her seat.

My eyebrows furrowed again as I stared at her. It was a few seconds before I could find my voice again. "What?" I asked hesitantly, my voice barely above a whisper.

"He's going to keep it simple." She muttered as she looked at me and I raised my eyebrows at her. None of this was simple. "He's going to walk into the sun." She informed me and I closed my eyes and lowered my head.

The sun had become so beautiful to me, because of Edward. Now it was going to be the thing that takes away the man I hold the dearest to my heart. The only man I have ever loved with such a burning passion. Something so beautiful was going to become so utterly gut-wrenching to me.

I glanced towards the small window next to me, my heart sinking to the pit of my stomach. The sun was starting to rise and we were close to landing in Rome. "We'll be too late," I whispered as I looked over at Alice with parted lips, worry filling my eyes.

Alice quickly shook her head at me. "Right now he's leaning towards the melodramatic." She informed and my eyebrows furrowed as my head tilted to the side. "He wants the biggest audience possible, so he'll choose the main plaza, under the clock tower. The walls are high there. He'll wait until the sun is exactly overhead." She explained as she pursed her lips. "If we're lucky, he'll stick to his decision."

I slowly nodded my head as I stared at her. We still had a few hours on the plane. It was the longest hour ever. But then it came. Both of us turned our attention to the front of the plane as it was announced that we'd be landing in a few minutes. I wasn't sure between me and Alice, who was more hasty to get off the plane but we were one of the firsts off.

After stepping out of the airport, Alice dressed with large sunglasses and a scarf wrapped around her head; she turned towards me. "Wait here." She instructed me, and my eyebrows furrowed as I watched her run off at normal human speed.

I took a deep breath as I crossed my arms over my chest and waited for her with our bags. After a few minutes, a yellow Porch pulled up to the curb in front of me, and Alice climbed out. My eyebrows furrowed again as I stared at her. "Where'd you get the car?" I asked her in suspicion.

"Hope you're not opposed to grand theft auto," Alice muttered as she rushed over to me, grabbing our bags and rushing back to the car, loading them into the trunk of the car while I followed after her.

I took a deep breath as I shook my head. "Not today," I admitted as we got into the car. "How much time do we have?" I asked her as I raised my eyebrows. It was already 10 O'clock now.

"Not long anymore." She replied with a shake of her as she started driving, glancing over at me the second we pulled out of the parking lot. "Put on your safety belt." She instructed and I did as I was told, eyes widening when she drove faster. This took me back to my time with Edward Cullen.

"Do you see anything else?" I asked as I stared at her with my eyebrows still raised, my fists clenching together on my lap.

Her eyebrows furrowed as she got that distant look in her eyes, but her attention managed to stay on the road. "There's something going on." She muttered and I shifted in my seat to face her. "Some kind of festival. The streets are full of people and red flags." She added as her eyes focused again and she glanced at me. "What's the date today?"

"The nineteenth," I replied as I stared at Alice with confusion.

A look of realization crossed her eyes as her lips parted. "Well, that's ironic." She muttered as she sighed and I raised a questioning eyebrow at her. "It's Saint Marcus Day." She informed me.

"I haven't heard of that before," I muttered softly as I shook my head in confusion, never having heard of the holiday before.

"It's a holiday to celebrate how safe the city is." She informed me as she rolled her eyes. "There's a legend that Saint Marcus drove all the vampires from the city. Although he's still there and very much a vampire." She explained and my eyes slightly widened. "So once a year, they celebrate because the vampires never returned."

My lips parted as I stared at her with wide eyes. If Edward exposed himself today, it was going to bring a whole lot of trouble for the Volturi. I sighed softly as I turned my head to stare out my window. "They're not gonna be happy if Edward ruins Saint Marcus day for them by showing vampires are still in Volterra, are they?" I questioned as I pursed my lips.

"No, they are not," Alice confirmed as she shook her head and I turned my head to look back at her again. "They're going to act quickly." She muttered, pursing her lips tightly as her eyebrows furrowed.

"He's still waiting for noon?" I asked softly as I raised my eyebrows at her. It wasn't much longer before noon now and I wasn't all that sure how far away we were from the Volterra.

"Yes." She confirmed as she nodded her head. "And they're waiting for him." She informed me.

I glanced over at the clock behind the steering wheel, it was already half past ten. "It's almost noon now," I muttered softly, and Alice's foot slammed down on the gas pedal, the car speeding in and out of traffic.

It was just about twenty minutes before twelve when we were nearing a city surrounded by tall walls. "There's Volterra," Alice informed me and I let out a small sigh of relief. We were going to make it in time. That's what I thought, until the car slowed down as we entered the lain that entered the city.

My leg bounced uncontrollably as I continuously glanced between the lane of cars and the clock behind the steering wheel. With a huff, I unbuckled my safety belt. "Alice, we don't have much time, and this lane isn't moving," I muttered as I opened my car door. "Where's the square?" I asked her.

"Follow that lane." She informed me as she pointed towards the sidewalk that had a yellow stripe painted all across it. I nodded as I climbed out of the car. "He'll be under the clock tower!" She called out as I slammed the door shut and began running.

Please Edward, just wait for me to get to you.
