Chapter 9
Tangle lead the trio through the city and to her house. While they walked, she spoke to Sonic about the possible living conditions for himself and (Y/N). Turns out she didn't really have a spare room for them, since the only other room she had was completely full of junk, and Whisper was already bunking with her in her own bedroom. The two would have to sleep in the living room.
Sonic nodded, agreeing to the situation, he glanced at the (a/t), who was already resting against his shoulder and smiled. She looked peaceful, as if she wasn't in pain, wasn't stressed out by their huge task ahead. The blue hedgehog knew he wanted to make this trip as fun for her as possible, hopefully it will take some of the stress from her shoulders, and she won't be trying to carry the weight of the world anymore.
"If I have to take the floor, so be it." He shrugged, and Tangle gave him a smile, raising a brow in question. Sonic tilted his head in question, and the lemur shook hers, chuckling.
"Alright then, let's go." She said, getting a bounce to her step as she threw a fist in the air.
~Travel Skip~
Tangle, Whisper and Sonic were now standing in a living room, the grey walls were covered in plants, and an old blue sofa, looking far too worn for wear, sat against a wall, in front of an old, faded coffee table. The place felt messy, and yet it wasn't. It was just packed with a bunch of things, a stack of movies leant into the corner of the room, a side table next to the couch was covered in books and magazines, it was a strangely organised mess.
Sonic took in the room, surprised by the interior; he expected more collectable things, like action figures or comic books on the walls. Tangle had really surprised him today.
"It's like a garden in here." Sonic chuckled, taking a deep breath in, "The air is fresher than outside."
The grey lemur scratched her cheek sheepishly, "Well, a girl can have any hobby she wants."
Whisper, who was standing next to Tangle, nodded in agreement, offering her friend a smile. She then turned to a doorway,
"I'll get some blankets..." The wolf whispered, before disappearing down a hallway.
Tangle watched her go, a lop-sided grin on her muzzle. It was Sonic's turn to raise a brow at her,
"She really knows her way around the place huh?"
The lemur glanced at him, startled. She blinked, her cheeks turned pink, and she crossed her arms as she let out a huff.
"I'm letting her stay until she can find a place of her own."
Sonic laughed and nodded, not fully believing his ally, but not worried about pushing the topic further. Tangle, still very much flabbergasted and blushing, decided to spin the topic back on him. She attempted a sly smirk, adjusting her form so instead of having her arms crossed in defence, it was in defiance,
"So, are you two gonna bunk on the couch together, or will one be on the floor?"
There was a moment of silence, and Sonic glanced down at the sleeping (a/t).
"I'll sleep on the floor." He said, glancing at the couch, "Looks like there's only space for one person anyway."
Tangle rubbed her nose, holding her other hand behind her back, "The couch extends into a bed."
"I'll be fine on the floor thanks." Sonic said again, staring at her, "(Y/N) needs all the room she can get to be comfortable."
The lemur smiled at that and gave an understanding nod. Whisper returned then, holding a few blankets in her arms and Sonic took that as his cue to lay the (a/t) down on the couch. (Y/N) let out a groan, stirring and opening her eyes, her un-slinged hand automatically moving to her side. She looked around the room, taking in the garden-esk space and attempted to sit up.
"Hey hey." Sonic placed a hand on her shoulder, making her stop, "Easy. We're just at Tangle's place. You fell asleep on the way here."
The (a/t) blinked, laying back down and letting out a yawn,
"Oh... Okay..."
Sonic then took one of the blankets from the brown wolf, a fluffy blue blanket, and draped it over the (a/t). He explained that she needed to rest in order to recover, and to take it from a full-time hero, rest is super important. (Y/N) gave a small laugh at that, which turned into a groan and a sigh. She then glanced at the other two girls and gave them a small smile,
"Thank you..." She said, sounding like she could fall asleep at any moment.
"No problem!" Tangle waved a hand, "We'll leave you two to rest now, goodnight, guys."
Everyone said their goodnights, and Tangle and Whisper disappeared into Tangle's room. Sonic's ears twitched to the sound of the door closing before he turned his focus back onto (Y/N). She was clearly trying to stay away; her eyes were fighting the urge to close. He smiled and sat next to the couch. She titled her head towards him and gave a frown,
"Why are you sleeping on the floor?"
"I chose to." Sonic shrugged, "I figured you could use the couch."
The (a/t) nodded in agreement, wondering what else she should say. She wanted to stay awake, since they finally had privacy to talk, and she was dying to mention the elephant in the room. Sonic was leaning back on his hand, using the other to scratch under his quills. His legs were slayed out in front of him, and he seemed to be trying to get comfortable himself. He had a thin red blanket folded next to him, and he was prepping it for a pillow.
Finally, he laid his head on the blanket and seemed at least comfortable enough to relax, and the room turned to silence. Not even a fan was on to make the usual clicking and whooshing sounds. It was completely dead. Sonic shifted slightly, and the (a/t) watched him, when her ears twitched to a sigh.
"Are you okay?" (Y/N) asked.
"Yeah, it's nice to see Tangle and Whisper getting along so well." Sonic said, moving to his back and keeping an arm under his head. (Y/N) internally agreed, even if she didn't know much about the two, they seemed really compatible with each other.
She then turned her head to the ceiling when she realised the light was still on. Sonic seemed to notice this too, he let out another sigh, one that was universal for 'dammit, I was comfortable', before he got to his feet and looked for the switch. The (a/t) couldn't help but watch him, giggling at the inconvenience. Sonic glanced at her and chuckled as well, finding the switch, and turning it off.
(Y/N)'s eyes instantly started trying to adjust to the darkness, and it was something she wasn't expecting to appreciate. The nothingness that the darkness brought felt safe, nothing could find her here. She finally felt like she could rest easy tonight.
It was silent again, the two laying next to each other, yet not close. Sonic had placed his head opposite to (Y/N), one hand back under his head, the other over his stomach. The (a/t) couldn't do much to get comfortable, with one arm in a sling to restrict movement, the other decided to mimic, and both her hands rested on her stomach.
"Hey..." Sonic's voice came from the darkness, sounding somewhat concerned, "How are you feeling? After today."
"Tired I guess, I learnt a lot today." (Y/N) sighed, closing her eyes. Sleep felt almost non-existent now, "Oh, and in pain of course."
Sonic nodded to himself, "We'll head out to our first base as soon as you're healed. Until then, we can lay low and relax, take the time to properly plan out our next move."
(Y/N) cracked a smile, "Wow, you're so serious right now. What happened to the cocky hero of Mobius?"
"I know when to be silly and not be silly." Sonic responded, "Right now, I'm focusing on your injuries. If we act too rashly, they could get worse."
"Something tells me you wouldn't be thinking that rationally if it were you."
There was a chuckle, "Something tells me you're right."
(Y/N) turned her head to the hedgehog, just able to see his outline in the darkness. He reacted to her movement, lifting his head slightly. His eyes had a soft glow to them, they caught her eyes in his gaze.
"Thank you..." The (a/t) mumbled, "For helping me. I really appreciate it."
"It's no problem (Y/N)." He said, the (a/t)'s name coming from his lips felt... Weirdly nice, "You've been going non-stop for months, I figured you could use a hand, plus we can take this time to have a break, both of us."
It definitely sounded nice, to finally have a break. It was a lot of nothing for ages, perhaps taking a few weeks to recover and rest would do good for her mentally as well. As much as she wanted to find her family quickly, this was the next right step.
"I know. Thank you again Sonic."
"Once again, no problem."
The two smiled into the darkness, unaware that the other was returning it. Sonic wanted to say more, but he was finally feeling the tiredness tug at his mind. He knew the two should talk, and he wanted to as much as he dreaded it; it would have to wait for another time. The blue hedgehog rolled onto his side, closing his eyes. (Y/N) closed her eyes as well, doing her best to steady her breathing and lower the pain in her side. The two fell asleep instantly.
