Different Body, Same Mind

Shimmering splendour tears through the giant tufts of cotton floating in the sky; clouds of grey creep up in the distance. A sweet aroma wafts in the cool breeze as spring flowers just begin to bloom. The peace and tranquillity, however, is cut short when a loud yell sounds off just on the outskirts of Station Square.

"Put me down! I'm perfectly capable of getting myself there."

"No, you're not," a deeper voice states simply, continuing down a path with a blue hedgehog struggling in his grasp. "You know just as well as I do that you can't walk on a busted leg."

Reluctantly, Sonic ceases his futile attempts to escape from the ultimate lifeform's grip and crosses his arms over his chest, pouting rather childishly.

Mere moments ago, the two had engaged in combat with the hero's arch nemesis, Doctor Eggman. Unfortunately, he had been taken off guard, thus resulting in him temporarily unable to apply any pressure on his leg. Now, much to his dismay, he has to be carried by his rival to his two-tailed friend's workshop.

It doesn't take long before they reach their destination but, even then, there's no indication that the yellow fox is home. Shadow takes it upon himself to carry the speed demon into the considerably large shack and lays him down on a chair whilst going to look for some kind of first aid kit.

'Great,' Sonic thinks, 'now I'm stuck on my own with him and, with my leg like this, he'll probably take me out!'

He shakes away the thought, laughing to himself nervously, aware of how ridiculous he sounds since things weren't like that between them anymore. However, he stops when he hears metallic footsteps approaching. Shadow soon returns, first aid kit in hand, and kneels down in front of the blue hedgehog's leg. Without warning, he applies a hefty amount of rubbing alcohol on the wound. Sonic unintentionally kicks his counterpart from the pain, sending him flying back into one of the many machines that litters the room.

Shadow doesn't even have time to fully register what has happened as the invention hums to life, violently shaking and spewing out sparks of electricity. Within seconds, both Mobians are engulfed in white, falling to the floor unconscious.

Eventually, Shadow comes to, wincing from the searing pain in his leg. Wait. Something about this isn't right. When did he hurt his leg? He pulls himself up into a sitting position and almost feels like passing out again by what he sees: blue legs, bright red shoes, and an all too familiar, black and red hedgehog lying on the floor just in front of him. That can't be possible. It just can't! There's no way he could be in that faker's body. No matter how hard he wants to believe this is some bad dream, he soon comes to realise that, that isn't the case.

With much unwanted strain, the now blue hedgehog crawls over to his body and pokes it. "Faker? You in there?" He shivers at the sound of his voice - or rather, his doppelgangers. It's very unsettling to say the least.

A weary groan interrupts his thoughts and he watches as his body shifts. "Aw, man, my head is-"

The dark figure visibly tenses (probably from the realisation that his voice isn't his own) and almost jumps from his skin when he takes a quick glimpse at himself. He suddenly looks back at Shadow, eyes widening even further. The two stare at each other for a good while before Sonic bursts into laughter.

"This isn't funny, faker!" Shadow sneers, taking a mental note of how weird he sounds, which only makes the striped hedgehog laugh more.

"I'm sorry, but this is just too hilarious," he says in between laughs.

Unimpressed, Shadow crosses his arms over his now blue and peach chest while glaring at practically his other self.

"By the way," Sonic starts, having finally calmed down, "you have a really nice laugh. You should do it more often."

Green eyes momentarily widen but the blue hedgehog passes it off as nothing, responding with a huff. He attempts to get up, scowling when he ends up applying weight onto the wounded appendage. Being stubborn, he decides to try and walk on it anyway but falls. Sonic rushes over to him, genuine concern and shock slapped across his face. It doesn't matter that he's technically looking at himself; Shadow's never seen such sincerity and worry from his rival directed towards him before.

With the newfound strength of the ultimate lifeform (he can practically feel the Chaos energy coursing through his veins), Sonic helps his injured counterpart up onto a chair and begins to finish what Shadow started before he accidently kicked him. Being in the body of his budding rival is most certainly strange? different? bizarre? He can't quite find the perfect word for the job but one things for sure: it isn't right. Sonic glances at the golden inhibitor rings snaked around his dark wrists while he works on the leg, the previous felt energy now much more apparent. Just thinking about what could possibly happen if he ends up damaging the things keeping all that power at bay gives him the chills.

'Now I get why he can be so distant sometimes.'

"What was that?"

Ruby reds flick up to meet green in a temporary moment of shock, unaware that the mouth situated just below them had voiced their thoughts. That moment of eye contact doesn't last long as Sonic returns his attention to the blue leg.

"Oh, it was nothing," he lies in a quiet voice, which sounds rather strange since he's never heard Shadow's voice sound so small before.

Shadow's brows furrow but he merely shakes it off and turns his attention to something else. When his leg has been bandaged up, he gives a silent thanks with the nod of his head and slowly takes a stand. Sonic gets up as well, ready to help the injured hedgehog, only to lose his balance on the skates he clearly isn't used to using and falls on his front.

"Careful, faker," Shadow warns with an unsympathetic stare. "I don't want you destroying my body before I get it back."

Sonic can't help but chuckle quietly to himself. "I think I'd rather do that while I'm in my body."

The blue hedgehog visibly tenses, a very faint blush arising to his cheeks upon hearing this. "Wh-What?" He mentally curses himself for allowing himself to stutter.

Now, it's Sonic's turn to turn red and, honestly, Shadow doesn't like the way it looks on his face. It doesn't look right. It isn't him. Although, he's probably blushing himself.

"I-I... uh," Sonic turns his head away completely, giving himself a good mental hit on the head for once again voicing his thoughts.

Bright red shoes make their way to the black and red hedgehog, who is still lying on the ground, before a peach arm extends to offer a white gloved hand in assistance. Red eyes flick up to meet green and Sonic hesitantly takes the hand being given to him. He stands, his face only mere centimetres away from his counterpart's. A silent staring contest breaks out between the two and with the intensity of their stares it's a surprise their eyes don't fuse together.

Shadow's voice slices through the silence, though it comes out in a whisper. "So, you like-"

"Yeah," Sonic answers, his voice just as quiet, already knowing what is going to be asked of him.

It isn't apparent that their hands are still locked like two perfect puzzle piece until Sonic subconsciously tightens his grip. Even though it isn't his own, he can feel the muscle in his chest pumping blood faster and faster with every passing moment. He wants nothing more than for this nerve wrecking moment to come to an end but a part of him doesn't want that; a part of him likes this - the closeness.

And that's when it happens.

Two lips, peach and tan, meld together as emerald and ruby close off from sight, a hand running through and softly gripping blue quills. A warm ember burns in both of their chests, the long awaited moment filling them with a gentle warmth. Both hearts beat considerably faster, almost in time with each other, as if the two Mobians were specifically made for one another. This: this is right; this is them; this is meant to be.

"So, how exactly did this happen?" a yellow fox asks after he finally manages to return the hedgehogs to their bodies.

Sonic shrugs nonchalantly with a light chuckle. "I accidentally kicked Shadow, he fell into that machine, boom! Body swap."

Tails shakes his head in an amused manner and flicks one of his friend's ears, mildly and playfully scolding him. He isn't mad, he's just glad that his best pal (and his machine) is alright. The speedster gives his ear a gentle rub and laughs as he takes a quick glance at the ultimate life form. He's become pretty quiet since the kiss and that worries him but that moment of anxiety dissipates when Shadow glances back and shoots him a small, barely noticeable smile. Sonic returns the smile with one ten times larger, his eyes practically beaming with light. They have yet to tell Tails about their little moment but they'll be sure to tell everyone when the time is right. For now, however, it's just them and their little secret.

So I know I'm already writing other stories but, being the person I am, I decided to make another book :')
