Exits

We are stuck now.
The ritual has turned to poison,
Habits turned into harsh obligations.
Too toxic to prolong,
But coward of us to cease.

The morning pleasantries
Are a mechanical act.
Too well practised,
Almost deceiving,
Too forced to be ending up with
Sour mouth and ill will.

The endless loop of wishing
Hurt and harm, shame and shatter
Yields no good to us
But sickness and heartbreak.

The afternoon lunch
Is a fragile game
The two of us can play at.
Moving along the lines,
Not daring to cross.
Catching out lies and loves.

The dinner is almost nerve wrecking.
This time with desperation
Drinking our expensive wine.
The flowers have died now
Such a perfect epitome of us.
No one of us is big enough to acknowledge and get a change.

One of us has to be big enough.
To be cowardly brave,
To step out of the cues
We set ourselves,
To make this mess bareable,
And call quit.

I know it is a courage asked a bit too much of us,
So much that it might leave us hollow.
But deep down we scream and beg for exit.
Our arrogance and pride might eat us whole, if not this decay.

The world has shown mercy
Times enough
Giving us reasons to quit.
But our prodigious egos
Forces us to move past,
Long for the next time,
To have our hearts shatter
And increase distrust
Grow cracks more wide
To swallow us whole
And bring it to conclusion.

It will only be time
When we would have had enough
Of the shame and sour in our mouth
Our stomachs would have been full
Of curses and carelessness
To drag this failing act.

It will only be time
When the gum will have gone stale
In the mouth.
When the stomach would have caught the pretense
That there is nothing to digest.
The world will scream,
But we will be deaf enough
To pass the pleas and puns
Till our worlds crumble down
By our feet.
