Chapter Twenty

Nigel was right. I had to tell him about my family. He deserved to know. I hadn't heard from my mum in ages. But, I know her. She would pop up all of a sudden or send Claire. Ugh. I so did not want to think about my family but I couldn't help the thoughts that ravaged my mind. I didn't know why, I just never got along with my mum or my little sister. The only person I got along with was my dad and let's just say he was very far away. I knew I had to call and congratulate her but it just reminded me of how much of a failure I was. I knew there would be a party of some sort, and I would get out of it, like I always do. I picked up my phone and dialed my sister's number.

"Hello?" she said.

"Claire! I just wanted to congratulate you...." I began but was quickly interrupted by Claire.

"Do you know how mum is worried about you? You haven't spoken to her for some months now, Kayla", Claire told me.

"Claire, this is not about me. I just wanted to wish you a happy anniversary", I said.

"Just call her, okay? She's worried sick about you."

"I don't need you to tell me what to do, okay?" I said angrily and hung up.

This is exactly why I hated talking to Claire. She always judged me and was always telling me what to do. I was twenty-eight years old for crying out loud! I could clearly make my own decisions. Now, I have to think of a way to get out of attending that party.

I stared at the cabinet filled with my collection of alcoholic drinks. I took out my favourite brand of whisky and poured myself a glass. I downed it in a few seconds. This was just what I needed. An uncountable number of glasses later, I heard the doorbell ringing. Nigel was here! I quickly put the alcohol away and staggered to the door. He smiled when he saw me but it was quickly replaced with a look of confusion on his face. I wasn't drunk, just a little tipsy.

"Hello, Nigel", I said and immediately put on an innocent look.

"Hi, Kayla", Nigel said and entered in.

He went straight to the living room and took in everything. The light yellow painted walls, the chandelier hanging from the ceiling, the exquisite furniture, the marble floors and just about everything in the room. He took a seat and I sat next to him.

"Okay, we were studying the book of Daniel the other time. Let's continue from where we left off", Nigel said, taking out his leather Bible.

"Can we take a break?" I asked Nigel.

"No, we can't", Nigel said firmly.

"Please, Nigel. I'm really tired", I said.

"No", Nigel said, a bit more loudly.

I needed to think up a new plan very fast.

"Where's your Bible?" Nigel asked me.

"It is in my room", I answered.

"Then go for it", Nigel told me.

"You see, I think there's something wrong with my bathroom sink and I'm scared something might happen. Can you please fix it?" I asked him.

"Why haven't you called a plumber?"

"It's late and since you're here, I thought you could fix it."

"Okay. Where are the tools?"

"They're in my room."

Nigel just nodded and we went to my bedroom. He immediately headed towards my bathroom, looking for the tools. I crept up behind him and put my arms around his waist.

"I have a better idea. Let's have a little fun", I told Nigel and placed my mouth over his.

He was totally taken aback but immediately pushed me away.

"What do you think you're doing?" Nigel asked angrily, his face contorted beyond recognition.

"I just want us to do this before you rape me or drug me. You don't know how much this means to me, Nigel."

"Kayla, you know I would never do that to you."

Nigel, are you leaving?" I asked, suddenly filled with worry.

"Yes, Kayla, this isn't right. I'll see you later."

With that, he was gone. I stood there, frozen, not being able to move. How could Nigel reject me like that? How? The only thing left to do now was to crawl into my bed and cry myself to sleep.
