Chapter Seventeen
Fun? How could work be fun? I asked myself as I stared at the crowd of teenagers enjoying themselves, which apparently, I wasn't doing. I stared at the phone in my hands. What was wrong with me? Why hadn't I brought an actual camera with me?
"Kayla!" Nigel's voice snapped me out of my train of thoughts.
"Nigel!" I said and gave him a big hug.
"Where were you? I was sick with worry!" Nigel told me.
"Sophie and I had a little chat."
"Oh, okay. What are you doing here by yourself? You're supposed to be having fun!"
"I'm kind of working here."
""You're working?"
"Our fashion editor is really sick so I decided to fill in for her. We're working on an article about the trendy outfits every teen is wearing."
"Why didn't you tell me you were working?"
"I didn't want to disappoint you."
"And I'm sure you need a photographer", Nigel said, pulling out his camera case from his bag.
"Nigel, you're a lifesaver! I could totally kiss you right now!"
"Save the kiss for later", Nigel said and I chuckled.
He went on to take photographs here and there. I just enjoyed watching him do what he loved best. I, the charming one, of course, asked questions concerning the designer and basically what they were wearing. 97% of them had no idea about all that information. A particular teenage girl really stood out for me. She told me she had designed the outfit she was wearing herself. A budding fashion designer. A girl after my own heart. Definitely front cover worthy.
When we were done, we headed to a local diner where we had lunch and looked through the photographs. They looked so professional. I was so proud of Nigel. What would I do without him? After our lunch, Nigel offered to drive me home. I accepted gladly. He walked me to the door, as any gentleman would.
"I really enjoyed myself today", I told Nigel truthfully.
"Yeah, me too", Nigel said.
There was an awkward silence between us. Nigel suddenly started scratching his head and stared at the floor. I could tell he wanted to tell me something. I wondered what it was.
"I think I should go inside", I said, pointing to the door.
"No, wait. Please don't be mad at me. Do you think you could make it to Bible study, just the two of us? Colton said it would improve our relationship and draw closer to God", Nigel said.
"I'm really busy with week."
"How about Sunday? Right after church service."
"Okay. I think that could work."
"Bye. I'll see you later."
"Bye."
I mentally slapped myself as I headed back inside. Why do I keep agreeing to everything Nigel says? Is it his charm or what? Much to my surprise, when I entered the room, I saw Rita adjusting the hem of her bright turquoise sundress.
"Ooh. You're all dressed up", I said.
I have a date tonight", Rita said.
"And you didn't tell me! What kind of best friend does that?" I said.
"The kid of best friend who wants to surprise her best friend", Rita told me.
I chuckled.
"How long has this been going on?"
"This is actually our first date. I'm nervous."
"Don't worry. It'll be fine. Is he cute?"
"Duh! Who do you take me for?" Rita said and showed me a picture.
"He's cute alright. Tell me all about him!"
Rita spent the next few minutes talking about her new boyfriend. We only stopped when we heard the honking of a car horn.
"He's here!" Rita said and excitedly grabbed her purse.
"Have fun", I told Rita and gave her a hug.
"I will", Rita said and left.
I went to my study and turned my laptop on. I had so much work to do. This was going to be a long, long night.
