I'm Sorry, Who Are You? (p2)
Here's the part two to last week's one shot requested by ffoodie and this part was requested by Blessed_by_Hypnos , so I hope you like it!
Percy's POV
"We have to do something, Annabeth. We can't let him do this."
"Perce, you're getting way too worked up over this. Sit down, take a deep breath." She crosses her arms over her chest, the fabric of her baby blue dress wrinkling. "I, personally, think he's changed. He and Nico seem really happy together, and it has been two and a half years. I think that Nico knows him pretty well."
"He's a criminal," Percy says, burying his head in his hands. "And Will's probably been hiding his shady drug dealing and organ harvesting or whatever he does from Nico for all this time but once they're married Will's gonna have free reign to do whatever we want. And it's my fault! I set one of my best friends up with a criminal!" He's shaky as he lowers himself down to one of the soft armchairs of their hotel room, burying his face in his hands. He's aware of Annabeth perching herself on the arm, and even though his head is still buried he knows she's making that look, the smile mixed with pity and amusement and understanding. He can feel her wedding band moving as he rubs his back and that small sensation brings him a little bit of comfort, despite the fact that he set one of his best friends up with a hardened criminal.
"Talk to him about it," Annabeth says. "I'll help you."
"When are we supposed to do that?" Percy groans, staring up at Annabeth like a wounded puppy. "We're going to the rehearsal dinner in, like, five minutes. The wedding's tomorrow, we're too late."
"Tell him tonight," Annabeth says. "At the dinner."
"Won't that be embarrassing?"
"It's for Nico's own good," Annabeth points out. "And I don't have much pity for the man who probably paid for their entire wedding through selling meth." Percy nods as if he's trying to make himself believe it as if he's trying to muster up the courage. It's been years and every single day he's lived in fear and regret, trying to make himself tell Nico to break up with the very person Percy set him up with. And after two and a half years, he thinks he might be ready.
"Okay." He stands up, adjusting his wedding band as he stares at Annabeth. It's become somewhat of a nervous tick in the past year he's had it but it helps calm down the beating in his heart, at least a little. He presses a kiss to Annabeth's lips and when they break apart, she's smiling, cupping his cheek with her hand.
"I'm proud of you," she says. "For doing the right thing." She wraps her arm around his waist, her bright smile making her eyes shine. "You ready to do this?"
"Yeah." Percy feels a chill run up his spine, and part of him wonders what will happen to him in the future. Maybe he'll be thrown in the back of a truck and used as a slave on Will's drug farm, maybe he'll wake up to find that his kidney's been stolen, maybe he'll just get shot. He isn't sure. But he's doing the right thing, digging Nico out of the hole that Percy made for him, and that makes it worth it.
Will's POV
His eyes are bright as he scans the dinner, his and Nico's friends and family talking, laughing. He reaches underneath the table, giving Nico's hand a squeeze. "I can't believe we're actually doing this," he says, his voice just above a whisper. If it's any louder, he might start crying.
"Me, too," Nico says. "Sometimes I think about how we met. Percy pretending to be me, you falling for the slick Nico that he pretended to be." His eyes look watery. "It's been a wild ride." He presses the sleeve of his suit jacket underneath his eye, his smile wavering.
"Hey, you can't cry now," Will says, laughing softly to keep the tears off of his own cheeks. "That's for tomorrow." He gives Nico's arm a squeeze and kisses his cheek. Nico smiles underneath his lips.
"I'm gonna give a toast." He might start sobbing halfway through but if he stays sitting any longer he'll start sobbing anyway, so it's worth the risk. "I'd like to give a toast," he says, standing up and tapping his fork on his glass. "I'd like to give my toast to my family, for being so understanding when I came out. Almost a little too understanding." There's light laughter from the rest of the table, and Nico hides his smile behind his hand. "A toast to my friends for making sure I graduated pre-med instead of dropping out as I threatened to so many times so now I'll actually be able to support our family, and a shoutout to Percy, for catfishing me on grindr so many years ago with Nico's face. If it wasn't for you, I might not even know Nico." The table laughs and as Will stares at Percy he shifts uncomfortably under Will's gaze, and he sees Annabeth give him a light tap on the back, a small nod.
"Actually," Percy says, standing up and picking up his glass with a shaking hand. "That's what I wanted to mention tonight." Will frowns- he's known Percy for years. In passing, of course. Percy has always been shaky around him, his face always goes unnaturally pale and he was skittish but this level of ghostliness was a new one for Percy. "Listen, I know I made a mistake two and a half years ago. I shouldn't have catfished with Nico's pictures on grindr."
"It was dumb," Nico says, standing up and taking Will's hand. "But it turned out good in the end, right?"
"Nico, no," Percy says, steadying himself on the table. Percy looks absolutely petrified. "Listen, I love you. You're one of my best friends, and that's why I can't let you marry a criminal."
"Excuse me?" There's a split second when there's a smile on Nico's face when he thinks that it's a joke but after he sees that Percy's face is deadly serious, the smile slides right off. "You're serious, aren't you?"
"I just keep thinking about-"
"Percy, stop talking for a second," Nico says. "Will isn't a criminal. He just graduated pre-med at Columbia, are you stupid?"
"I just keep thinking about what you told me the day you met," Percy says, putting a shaking hand over his mouth. "Listen, Nico, I don't know what you've been doing these past two and a half years but it scares me, thinking about you being married to him, doing drug runs and holding bloody organs in bags. I can't let you marry him, as your friend." Will begins to dig a memory deep out from the depths of his mind, something that he had nearly forgotten about in the two and a half years after it had happened and he has to bite his lip hard to keep himself from keeling over from laughter. The rest of the table is watching tears spring to Percy's eyes and Nico leans over, his face bright red from trying not to laugh.
"We never told him the truth, did we?" Nico asks. "You remember right after we met, and we pretended you were a hardened drug dealer and organ farmer to freak him out?"
"Telling him the truth kinda slipped my mind," Will says. "I always wondered why he was so shaky around me." They glance at each other, back at Percy, whose eyes are trained on Nico.
"Nico, I'm sorry it took me so long to tell you what I think, but you have to listen to me, please," Percy begs. "You have to call it off."
"Damn it, Annabeth, you were supposed to be the smart one," Nico says. "You both really thought that I was dating a criminal for two and a half years?" Realization is beginning to dawn on Annabeth's face and Nico starts to laugh, clutching his stomach. "Annabeth, come on. I expect this stuff from Percy, but not from you."
"Fuck."
"Yeah, that's about the reaction I was expecting," Nico says.
"Just to clear things up," Will says, laughing. "I'm not a drug dealer, I don't harvest organs, I've never done anything illegal in my life. Got it, Percy?" He raises his eyebrows and Percy shifts uncomfortably, his cheeks crimson. The eyes of the entire table are on them, and laughter rises up from scattered seats. "Got it, Percy?"
"Yeah, yeah, got it," Percy says, glancing from Annabeth to the table to the wall; anything to avoid Nico and Will's gaze. "Sorry I thought you were a criminal."
"Sorry I let him think you were a criminal," Annabeth says. She's chewing on the inside of her lip, blushing hard. "I probably should have realized sooner."
"Yeah, you should have," Nico says. "But it's fine because at least you did one thing right."
"Which is?" Percy glances up immediately, his eyes bright almost as if he needs a little bit of praise, just to not be the laughing stock of the wedding party.
"You set us up," Nico says, wrapping his arms around Will's neck and kissing him long and hard. "And at least you did a pretty good job with that."
Hey guys,
I feel like this is short and bad so I'm sorry about that. I've got some good stuff planned so hopefully I can make up for it next week, but I hope you liked this!
