chapter seven.

After saving Cece from the minster at her and Devin's moms house, the three teens tiredly trudged back to Gravesend.

They waited for the subway and Cece rested her head on Caitlyn's since they were sitting on the bench about seven feet away from the tracks. Devin stood over the two of them, watching his twin sister like a parent who just caught their child doing something they shouldn't. His hands were rested in his hip and his eyebrows were raised, waiting for Cece to speak up.

But every few seconds, his eyes would move to Caitlyn rubbing her hand up and down Cece's arm reassuringly and his "angry mom" demeanor would falter watching Caitlyn be so gentle with his twin.

He finally had to peel his eyes away when Cece let out a tired sigh at Devin's stares. She threw her head back and shut her eyes. "Dev, please don't give me a hard time about this. Just this once?" Cece asked, opening one eye to look at her brother.

Devin threw his arms out in desperation, looking to Cece with wide eyes. "I can't believe you've been lying to me this whole time about debate camp!"

Cece looked up at Devin with wide eyes and raised eyebrows. "Really? A giant killer blob was just after me, and that's what you're worried about?" She yelled considering no one else was at the sub station with them.

Her eyes moved to Caitlyn sitting beside her and immediately Caitlyn scooted away from Cece and dropped her hand from around the girls shoulders, knowing that she was gonna get hit with the shrapnel.

"Why didn't you two tell me that Dad was behind all the crazy stuff happening?" Cece reprimanded and because of how close she was sitting to Caitlyn, the Montez girl flinched.

Devin noticed it immediately and without missing a beat, he stepped forward. His arm shot out in between the two girls and he shook his head at his sister. "Okay, we don't know for sure that he is." Devin quickly blurted to get Cece to leave Caitlyn alone and look to him.

But once his sisters eyes were on him, Devin wanted to curl into himself. Her annoyed and angry glare sent a shiver down his spine and made his stomach churn.

Devin opened and closed his mouth, trying to find the right words. He got out a couple of grumbles before he waved his hand wildly at Cece. "Regardless, you've been lying to me this whole time. Why? Why didn't you tell me?" Devin breathed out, his voice quieter now and almost drained. Like all the adrenaline from the past few hours finally died out and all he was left with was the urge to go to bed.

Cece relaxed back into the bench she and Caitlyn were sitting on and let out a defeated sigh. She knew there was no point in fighting with Devin anymore so she looked up to the boy through her eyelashes and shrugged. "Because I didn't want to admit that I failed at something. And I didn't want to see the look on your face right now."

Caitlyn, who had been watching Cece with big eyes and a reassuring hand that ran up and down the girls back, looked up to Devin to see the look Cece was talking about.

The second both Cece and Caitlyn's eyes were on him, Devin's face twisted and he awkwardly stepped away from the girls, purposely hiding his face from them. "Wh-What look?" He stuttered out and Cece only frowned at the question, answering it as if it were nothing.

"Pity."

Devin flinched like he had just been slapped. He blinked, opening and closing his mouth in shock before he finally sputtered the words out. "Cece, I'm not looking at you with pity. I'm looking at you like a person. You know, like for once, it actually... it feels like we're twins!" Devin yelled with a big smile like he's been waiting for this moment.

He sighed, his hands slapping down against his legs when both Cece and Caitlyn giving him confused looks. Devin raised a hand to gesture to his sister and shrugged. "You know, you've always been the perfect twin and..."

Devin's words died out and his big smile started to fade as he pointed to himself. "I've always been the 'let's hope he turns it around' twin. But you're a mess! Just like me." He opened his arms out and smiled by the end of his words. It was sheepish and made his face all red, but it made both girls smile.

"I've never felt closer to you. Gimme a hug." Devin hummed softly, gesturing for Cece to stand up and hug him.

Cece pressed her lips together and shook her head just once. "No hug."

Devin's eyebrows raised, challenging Cece while Caitlyn just giggled from beside the girl, pressing her hand to Cece's back and lightly pushing her to stand up. "You're insane if you think he's not gonna give you one." Caitlyn warned through her giggles, making Devin hum in agreement.

"Yeah, come on." Devin snapped back. Cece let out a loud and sarcastic groan as she pushed herself off the bench and walked into her brothers arms. Caitlyn smiled at how quickly Devin's arms were around her and how Cece relaxed in his arms. Caitlyn didn't have siblings, but she knew the feeling of finally getting something off your chest to someone you're closest with and and ending up only feeling closer to them.

As the twins pulled away from their hug, their train echoed through the tunnels of the sub-station. Wind started to blow past the three and from the East end of the tunnel, Caitlyn could faintly see the lights of the train coming toward them.

Caitlyn put her hair behind her ears and winced at the loud screeching of the brakes on the train car. When it finally stopped in front of them and the doors slid open, she let out a small sigh of relief, stepping inside before Devin and Cece.

She made a beeline to the pair of seats that faced the direction they were going. Caitlyn got car sick whenever she wasn't facing front and she didn't want to get sick in front of Devin. That would probably be her worst nightmare.

Caitlyn felt someone flop into the seat next to her and for a second, she didn't know who it was.

She turned her head and smiled at Devin getting comfortable on the subway seat next to her. His shoulder bumped into hers for a second before he finally relaxed, lying back in the seat. Devin's head fell back against the top of the seat and he turned to look at Caitlyn. The second his eyes met hers, the corners of his lips were twitching upward.

"Thanks for coming with me today. It means a lot." Devin breathed out, finally getting to calm down knowing they were away and safe from the monster that just attacked Cece at their mom's house.

And when he saw pink spread across Caitlyn's face as she smiled back at him, Devin felt like he was on a high. The stress of the monster completely leaving his mind in this moment. Caitlyn shrugged, her head lowering to hide her growing blush and smile and Devin heart rate sped up at that, not wanting to lose this sight just yet.

"Of course. I'm always gonna be here for you and C." Caitlyn said sheepishly, her voice softer and quieter than Devin's heard it all summer. He felt his own cheeks heat up staring at the girl, but he kept looking back at her, his smile growing by the second.

Caitlyn looked back and forth between Devin and their thighs that kept bumping into each other from the jolty subway ride, but wouldn't just stick together. She tried to not let the red in Devin's face get too much into her head. She opened and closed her mouth to try and find the right words, the corners of her lips twitching upward every time before she got her words out.

"And thanks for making summer so interesting so far." Caitlyn said, her eyes staying on Devin as he nervously rubbed the back of his neck before setting his hand back down...

Right onto Caitlyn's hand sitting in her lap.

Caitlyn had to stop the squeak of nervousness and excitement that almost escaped her. She had to act cool. Caitlyn licked her teeth and flipped her hand over so her palm was facing Devin's and within seconds, Devin interlaced their fingers.

She felt dizzy and her face hurt from the smile growing on it. Caitlyn was staring down at their hands, not noticing Devin was wearing a smile just as wide as hers  and his entire face was almost as red as a tomato.

"I'm glad I came to visit my dad this summer." He admitted, his voice softer since he said it through his smile. It made Caitlyn finally look up from her lap and her smile turned teasing as she raised her eyebrows.

"Why? To get attacked by vines that pull you into the sewer?" She asked in a playful tone, leaning closer into Devin's side.

Devin looked away as he rolled his eyes at Caitlyn's words. His smile never left and the second he turned back to Caitlyn, the teasing smile on her face fell. Her eyes widened just a tad at the look at he was giving her and she was sure Devin heard the way her breath hitched at how close they were.

She also could've sworn Devin looked down at her lips, but maybe she was hallucinating because by the time she looked up from his lips, Devin was staring back at her, a dreamy smile on his face as he shook his head. It was barely noticeable.

"To get to see you again." Devin whispered just loud enough for Caitlyn to hear it.

Devin's eyes scanned over Caitlyn's face and his smile turned almost smirk-like when he saw the pink come back into her face.

This time, Caitlyn knew she wasn't hallucinating. She saw Devin look down at her lips, back to her eyes, down to her lips, and then back up to her eyes one last time. He shrugged, feeling like he already said what he needed to, but wanted to say more.

"You just... You make things better." Devin's breath fanned Caitlyn's face and Caitlyn was sure her heart was thumping so loud in her chest, Devin could hear it. Maybe even feel it from how close they were sitting.

Maybe it was the rocking from the subway, or maybe the two of them were doing it all on their own without even meaning to, but Caitlyn and Devin were much closer now.

Their noses almost bumped with every sway of the subway car. The loud squealing of the train only made the butterflies in Caitlyn's stomach grow. She swallowed a lump growing in her throat when she noticed Devin look down at her lips one last time before leaning in completely. Caitlyn could almost feel Devin's lips on hers.

Key word: almost.

Just before Devin could raise his hand to Caitlyn's face to pull the girl closer to him and finally kiss her, the brakes of the subway car squealed and alarm bell rang loud enough to make the two teen flinch away from each other and jump apart.

Caitlyn's hands flew up to cover her ears and she winced at the ear-piercing noise that echoed throughout the car.

Suddenly, the lights started to flicker above the three teens and the windows the Caitlyn and Devin's sides, and to Cece's back started to turn a deep red color. Caitlyn's eyebrows furrowed, watching the red in the windows in between her and where Cece sat behind them.

"What the..." She muttered under her breath before the windows of the subway shattered. Caitlyn yelped and Devin wrapped his arms around her and stepped in front od her to block any of the glass shards from getting to her.

When the noise settled, Caitlyn and Devin slowly turned back around to face the shattered windows and Caitlyn was sure her heart sank to the floor like dead weight when she saw that same reddish-brown blob make its way into the sub-car, blocking Cece from getting to Caitlyn and Devin.

"Cece!" Caitlyn yelled, going to try and jump over the blob to get to the girl, but Devin wrapped his arms around her waist and tugged her back when he noticed the blob was moving.

Moving straight toward Cece.

Cece's face paled as she stared at the creature inching closer to her. It took her about three seconds before the frozen shock finally left her body and she was able to scramble away from the monster.

"It wants me! It's following me!" Cece shrieked, her back pressed against the wall as she tried to get the blob to circle her so she could run toward Caitlyn and Devin. Instead of moving off to the side like Cece hoped, the blob spread, taking over more of the subways floor so the girl had no where to go.

This time, Caitlyn had to hold Devin back. He was just about ready to dive over the blob to get to his twin, but Caitlyn wrapped her arms around him and used all the strength she could muster up to keep him in place.

"Cece, run! You have to run!" Devin yelled in Caitlyn's arms. Cece's head snapped up to look at her twin and Caitlyn. Her face paled and her eyes looked close to tears. She let out a small, scared cry that Caitlyn hardly heard before the girl climbed out of the shattered subway car window and ran out the tunnel.

Caitlyn watched with wide eyes as the blob somehow turned to face where Cece ran and slowly started to creep after her.

By the time the blob was completely out of the car, Caitlyn's chest was still heaving, staring off at the spot were the monster? creature? whatever just was.
