chapter eight.

Devin and Caitlyn didn't find Cece for an hour. Most of that hour was just the two of them trying to get out of the subway tunnels. They were so far from a stop, they had no signal to call and check on the girl.

When they finally got out of the subway tunnels and found a stop, they got weird looks from people at the stop that were actually waiting for a subway-car, but Caitlyn and Devin ignored the looks, jumped onto the floor of the subway tiles, and ran out of the subway to head to the hospital.

Caitlyn's heart was racing a mile a minute as she and Devin practically threw themselves into her car. As Caitlyn started to drive out of the parking lot, Devin finally got the reception he needed to open FindMy and follow Cece's location.

When they finally got to Cece, she didn't let either of them answer any questions. She completely tuned them out as she climbed into Caitlyn's car and insisted they drive to the spot her uncle first went missing. The same lot that cursed Devin just a few nights prior.

Caitlyn honestly didn't want to go back there. Ever again. Could you blame her? All Caitlyn wanted to do was go home and try and sleep without any nightmares of what's been happening to her and heart friends all these days.

Nonetheless, Caitlyn listened to Cece and when they finally reached the abandoned lot, Caitlyn's car slowed. Cece hardly waited for the car to stop before hopping out and running toward the gates.

Caitlyn took her time to get out the car and Devin would've gotten out a lot faster if it wasn't for the pale and nauseous look on her face. He practically ran around the car to reach her just as she closed her door and locked her car.

"You okay?" Devin asked and Caitlyn let out a dry and humorless laugh. She brought her hand up to rub her forehead before tossing her hand aside and scoffing.

"Definitely freaking out. I mean..." Caitlyn sighed, crossing her arms and shrugging her shoulders and she nodded to Devin. "You almost died, Cece almost died, Trey did die and th-then someho-how came back to life and... and I just..." Caitlyn didn't finish her sentence, groaning at that fact that it wasn't because she wouldn't, but couldn't from her stuttering and panicking.

Caitlyn felt her heart in throat and her head felt a little dizzy. She tried to breathe, but her throat was barely letting any oxygen in or out.

Devin watched her nervously. He thought back to one of his first conversations with Caitlyn since coming back into town. He asked her when she got rid of her stutter and Caitlyn said that after some time, she was able to speak without it and now, it only would come back right before she would get a panic attack.

His face fell as he watched the way Caitlyn was barely breathing, her chest rising and falling just enough to get some air in, but not a lot.

Devin stepped closer, to toes of his shoes practically knocking into Caitlyn's Doc Martens. His hands came up to cup Caitlyn's face and move her to look up at him.

"Hey, hey, hey..." Devin whispered, his stomach twisting hearing the way Caitlyn's breathed hitched as she stared back up at him. Her heart was still pounding and she was still struggling to breathe, but now, it wasn't just because of panic anymore, but because of Devin.

"It's gonna be okay. We're gonna be okay." Devin whispered, leaning down so he was even closer to Caitlyn.

Caitlyn hardly listened to Devin once he brought his face closer to hers. Their noses almost brushed, Caitlyn felt Devin's breath fan her face and just like that, she was done for. The fear pooling in her stomach slowly melted into butterflies and unfortunately, Caitlyn's eyes landed on Devin's lips and stayed there.

Caitlyn held her breath completely, not really helping her panic but she couldn't help it. Her eyes flickered to Devin's and she let out a small breath of shock and relief when she noticed he wasn't looking back into her eyes, he was looking down at her lips.

One of his hands that were cupping her face moved to cradle her neck, his other hands still planted on Caitlyn's cheek. And Caitlyn could've sworn she felt herself get pulled closer to him.

"Guys, let's go!" Cece yelled, her voice forcing Caitlyn and Devin to realize that they were not alone and in the middle of monster hunting? Plant hunting? Caitlyn wasn't too sure.

She jumped about a foot back and away from Devin. Her face felt like a million degrees and her hands and feet felt like pins and needles. Caitlyn only stared at Devin for a few seconds, who stared down at his own shoes, his face getting pinker by the second.

When Devin didn't move, Caitlyn did. She walked past him, following Cece through the gate they had broken just days ago. As the metal rattled around her while she slipped between the two gates, she could finally hear Devin following her and Cece. But Caitlyn couldn't look at Devin. Not right now.

Caitlyn didn't say anything the entire walk through the lot. It was only when they got closer and closer to the tunnels Devin first got attacked in that she finally spoke.

"Okay, are we sure that we want to do this?" Caitlyn asked, her voice a little shaky from the nervous knot growing in her throat. After seeing what's happened to the past couple days to her friends, Caitlyn was a little terrified to step foot in there.

She could feel Devin's eyes staring into her, but Caitlyn couldn't turn to look at him still. She couldn't even look at Cece anymore. She just stared ahead of her, into the dark and terrifying tunnel before her.

"We don't have a choice." Cece sighed. She turned to face Caitlyn and felt a little bit bad insisting they go in considering how scared the Montez girl look. But it need to be done. Cece took a deep breath of bravery and turned back to the tunnels and nodded her head once definitively. "We need to figure out what's happening, and the answers are in the room where this all started."

Caitlyn knew Cece was right. They needed to figure out what was happening so they would know how to stop it. She swallowed the lump in her throat again, forcing it to stay down this time before stepping into the tunnels, Cece and Devin right there beside her.

The tunnels were completely empty besides the handful of spiderwebs that Caitlyn could see dangling from the ceiling. The tunnels were also completely silent. Caitlyn could only hear their footsteps cracking against the gravel beneath them and her own nervous breathing.

Until Caitlyn heard footsteps that definitely weren't her own or the twins'. These footsteps were harder, faster, and across the tunnels from Caitlyn, Devin, and Cece.

Caitlyn's eyes nearly popped out of her head and she searched the dark tunnels in a panic for somewhere to hide. "Guys! Someone's here. Someone's here!" Caitlyn whispered loud enough for only the twins to hear and not whoever was coming straight for them from down the tunnel.

As Caitlyn looked around, her eyes landed on a small intersection in the tunnels. A tunnel straight ahead, one on the left, and one on the right.

Whoever was coming toward them was in the hallway straight across from them, Caitlyn could tell from the faint bouncing light of the persons flashlight as they walked. Without taking her eyes off of the light, silently praying that she wouldn't come face to face with whoever was here, Caitlyn grabbed Devin and Cece's hands and tugged them toward the tunnel that veered left.

She pressed her back against the cold metal wall and stuck her arm out to push the twins back next to her. They all watched completely frozen as the light got brighter, the person getting closer until they finally passed through the intersection.

And part of Caitlyn prayed it was the bad lighting and maybe, just maybe she was seeing things.

Because the man in the hazmat suit looked just like the twins dad.

Caitlyn tried to tell herself that it was all in her head. Her mind trying to come up with an explanation and a face in her mind since the lighting warped her vision. But when she heard a whisper beside her, Caitlyn realized she wasn't the only one that thought the man now leaving the tunnels was Anthony.

"It's Dad." Cece whispered once the man—her dad, was far enough away. Slowly, Caitlyn turned to face her and ultimately Devin as well since they were both on that side of her.

Her eyes locked with Cece immediately and before Caitlyn could even get her question out, she knew deep down she was thinking the exact same thing as her.

...

Caitlyn drove the twins back home, but after seeing their dad behind all of this, neither of them wanted to go inside, so Caitlyn offered they spend the night at her house. She pulled out an air mattress she hadn't used in god knows how long and offered it to Devin, her and Cece sharing her full bed.

When they woke up in the morning, the three of them still couldn't wrap their hands around the idea of the twins' dad being the one behind everything that had been happening since summer started. Halfway through trying to come up with motives, Caitlyn left the room to go brush her teeth.

She came back a minute later, her toothbrush dangling from her mouth behind she started to brush.

"I get the vines, I get the Trey thing, but what I don't understand is how could Dad be behind the kombucha?" Cece explained to Devin before she noticed Caitlyn walk back into the room. She adjusted to face both of them, shaking her head. " I mean... I never even had it at the house." Cece breathed out and Caitlyn shrugged.

"Maybe he just has to think it? Your dad may always be around Trey's car, but he would never get inside of it." Caitlyn suggested as she took a seat in front of her vanity and continued to brush her teeth, watching her own reflection and Cece and Devin's behind hers.

Caitlyn's brushing slowed when Cece looked at her through the mirror, her eyebrows furrowed. "Wait. What are you talking about?" Cece asked and Devin squinted at his twin, shaking his head.

"The car we crushed Trey with... it was his car." Devin explained and Caitlyn watched as Cece snapped her head to look at her brother.

"Wait, you guys didn't tell me it was Trey's car!" Cece yelled before she looked back and forth between Devin and Caitlyn so fast, Caitlyn was shocked Cece didn't get a headache. "I was in Trey's car with Alex just the next day." Cece explained and Caitlyn let go of her toothbrush and slowly turned in her seat to actually look at Cece rather than her reflection.

"Really?" Caitlyn asked, her eyebrows furrowed because how on Earth was Treys car salvageable after it fell onto somebody.

From the foot of Caitlyn's bed, Devin stared back at Cece with a different expression than Caitlyn's. Instead of his eyebrows furrowed, Devin's were raised and the corners of his lips twitched up into a smile.

"Really?" He asked, a teasing smile on his face as he wiggled his eyebrows at his twin.

Cece rolled her eyes, her cheeks pinking in embarrassment. She fell back into Caitlyn's bed, throwing her face into the blankets and groaning. "Okay, guys, grow up!" The girl complained, only making Devin snicker and Caitlyn's eyes widen in realization.

Slowly, she turned away from Caitlyn and to Devin. When Devon felt eyes on him, he turned to Caitlyn and sat up nervously at the look on her face.

"That's why she was acting so weird at the hospital last night!" Caitlyn yelled, shooting out of her seat and walking back into her bathroom to spit out her toothpaste and finish brushing her teeth.

"We need to find Alex." Devin breathed out, watching Caitlyn all the way until she disappeared into the bathroom. Then, he turned to Cece and teasingly poked her leg. "You should call her." He hummed and Cece groaned one more time before pushing herself out of Caitlyn's bed and headed out of the house.

"I'm heading out, Cait!" Cece yelled as she passed Caitlyn's closed bathroom door.

"Okay!" Caitlyn yelled just as she finished brushing her teeth. She turned off her water, shut off her bathroom light, and walked back into her room to see Devin still there, his eyes wide and expecting when she came back into.

She flopped down onto her bed right beside Devin, lying down completely and looking up at him.

"Cece and Alex..." Devin breathed out, rubbing his hands down his jeans. "Such splendid news."

Caitlyn squinted at Devin at his choice of words. When she didn't respond to him, Devin looked down at Caitlyn and threw his hands out defensively, fighting the smile on his face. "What? You told me I couldn't say bussing anymore!" Devin practically shrieked, his voice going about an octave higher in pitch.

Caitlyn rolled her eyes, a laugh coming out after her scoff. She tilted her head, her hair getting a little ruffled from her blankets underneath her and her temple rested on the denim of Devin's knee.

"Yeah, but you could try talking like a human." Caitlyn hummed, her eyes wide playfully to poke fun at the boy.

"Shut up!" Devin moved his knee up, making Caitlyn's head hit the mattress beneath her. He tried his hardest to not let Caitlyn hear his laughter, but it slipped through. Devin lowered his head, ultimately making him look down at Caitlyn again just to see her smiling up at him.

Devin's laughter slowly died down and his face softened. Caitlyn's eyes widened and her breath hitched all over again. She lost control of her eyes just like that night before and they slowly drifted down to Devin's lips.

Caitlyn didn't move she just stared. Stared down at Devin's lips for about four seconds before she realized that Devin would definitely notice that she wasn't looking at his eyes and forced herself to look back up into his.

And Devin stared b ack at her with wide eyes, his pupils blown as his lips slowly started to part, like he wanted to say something, but didn't know what or how.

A voice in Caitlyn's head screamed at her. Cussed her out for making it so obvious that she wanted Devin. She had to think of a way to get out of this. She had to think of a way to end this moment as fast as possible. Faster than it would take for Devin to find his words, which by the looks of it, he was getting pretty close.

So Caitlyn said the first thing she could thin of, beating Devin to the punch.

"You should get going." She blurted without any context.

Devin pulled away, visibly taken aback. He blinked once, then twice, and then his eyebrows furrowed.

Caitlyn pushed herself up to sit side by side with Devin, swallowing the growing and embarrassed lump in her throat as she explained herself. "I have a shift soon and I have to get ready." Caitlyn rephrased with a nervous exhale.

When Devin's face fell and his shoulders slumped, Caitlyn felt a twist in her stomach as if she had made the wrong call. But it was too late to back down now. She already pushed him away for the time being. She couldn't take it back now, plus, Caitlyn really did have work soon. She had to get ready.

"Right! Okay, um..." Devin muttered more to himself than to Caitlyn. It was almost like he was giving himself a pep-talk, silently telling himself what to do and how to move. He pushed himself off of Caitlyn's bed, rubbed the palms of his hands down against the thighs of his jeans before turning back to Caitlyn, forcing a smile onto his face.

"I'll see you later?" Devin asked and Caitlyn nodded a little too eagerly than she would've liked considering she was currently kicking the boy out of her house.

As he started to walk toward her bedroom door, Caitlyn stood up after him and followed him just to the door of her bedroom. "Yeah. See ya." Caitlyn said, leaning against the doorframe of her room.

Devin gave her a small smile back before he started to head out of the house. Caitlyn stayed put in the doorway to her bedroom, physically unable to move. It was as if she was frozen in placed until Devin disappeared down the hall and she could hear the front door slam shut behind him.

The second Caitlyn knew Devin was out of her house, she closed her bedroom door and ran to her bed. She crashed down onto the mattress, hiding her face into her pillow and groaning, the loud noise muffled by her pillow.
