chapter 23

wooyoung san

gold flecks of warm summer sunlight illuminated the dorm room, glowing hazily through the cheap curtains, naturally casting stripes of light across the duvet.

san opened his eyes slowly, breathing in the comfortable feeling of sunday morning mixed with a familiar scent of vanilla and peaches. the latter was the scent that only belonged to wooyoung, his dusty lilac locks tickling san's face and warming his skin, the other's head tucked into the crook of san's own neck.

wooyoung's body was curled around san's protectively, but the shorter's head and fallen from the top of his and onto his chest, so that san was desperate not to move in case of disturbing the other's rare position.

his vision obscured by black strands of hair falling in his eyes, san was reminded of last night's events, causing him to blush and shake the hair gently away from his face. his boyfriend had granted him yet another night of fitful sleep, which was becoming less and less rare the longer he had known the other boy and allowed to be cuddled by him.

he regarded wooyoung's sleeping beauty with a soft smile playing on his lips, feeling lucky to have someone like him who looked that good.

"are you checking me out?" the raspy voice of the no-longer sleeping male sounded as he opened his sleepy eyes half-way to see san staring.

"maybe." san answered shamelessly, stroking the other's soft hair lazily, taking advantage of his morning state.

"hmm." wooyoung hummed, his eyelids fluttering as he leaned into san's touch, not ready to wake up and face the day.

san giggled softly, surprised and delighted by this new found side of his boyfriend he doubted anyone else in the world was accustomed to. "you're a cutie."

wooyoung opened his eyes again, raising his head slightly so that he was at the same level as the other. "i thought i was hot."

heat creeping into his cheeks, san nudged the other back, scoffing denyingly. "uh-huh. this sleepy guy? he's the furthest from hot. you're just busting my uwus with your cuteness."

"is that so?" wooyoung smirked, propping himself up to be above san. he shrank back instinctively, but the boy had a frighteningly playful glint in his coffee eyes, the kind of look the made san hold his breath and tingle all over.

"wait-" san began fearfully, but the other had already initiated a battle, and so the two were quickly caught up in a playful wrestle, each trying to pin the other down and win him over.

eventually, wooyoung flipped san onto his back successfully, preventing his escape and paying no mind to their none too innocent position.

"do you admit i'm hot now?" the victor prompted, staring down at a jittery san.

nodding stiffly, san remained helpless under his boyfriend, the younger male now hovering over him on the bed, pinning him down by swinging his other leg over him in a caging action and holding his arms above him firmly.

wooyoung continued to stare down at him intensely, unsatisfied with his answer. san turned his head away, trying in vain to broaden the distance between them, but the other's hand found his chin, angling his face to look at him once more.

"i said," wooyoung repeated, smirking in the unholiest of manors and leaning right down so he breath fanned san's panicked face. "do you admit i'm hot now?"

not going to lie - san's heart had beat itself almost to combustion, the demanding tone in his boyfriend's voice pricking his ears and curling his toes - but he was determined not to show the other how successful his dominance assertion had been.

"yeah, you're hot." san mumbled almost incoherently, pressing his head backwards into the mattress unconsciously.

"say it louder." wooyoung cocked his head, listening for the words he was looking for. when he didn't hear them immediately, he licked his lips purposefully slowly and lowered his mouth to his boyfriend's vulnerable ear, tightening the grip on his wrists.

"OKAY, JESUS!" san yelled, really intent on ignoring all the signals his body was telling him. "YOU'RE FUCKING HOT. THE HOTTEST. JUST GET OFF ME!" he begged, giving in after shivering at the sensation of wooyoung's tongue teasingly flicking his ear lobe and sending him into panic.

the other laughed, complying to his orders and sitting back on the mattress, running a hand through his messed up hair.

san was left breathlessly trying to collect his bearings, laying there for a moment before scrambling up and hugging a pillow to his chest, trying to calm his raging hormones whom he was not grateful for in the slightest.

"the measures you go to for a declaration of your looks..." he muttered, patting his own hair down as it was undoubtedly standing in all directions. "there's nothing wrong with being cute."

"i know," wooyoung smiled lazily, quirking an eyebrow at the disheveled other. "if i thought there was i wouldn't be dating you."

"hilarious." san grunted, throwing the pillow at him and getting up to ready himself.

when he returned from the bathroom, he was met with wooyoung sitting cross-legged on the bed examining his phone in concentration, barely having moved position.

"lazy ass." he mumbled under his breath, rubbing his damp newly black hair with a towel and getting ready to pull his shoes on.

"where're you going?" the other questioned without looking up from his phone.

"meeting jeongin and hyunjin. you aren't invited but-" san began to explain, but at the very mention of the names wooyoung's head shot up and his lips tightened.

"do you have to?" he interrupted, an unreadable expression on his face.

"they're my friends, jung. still not sure why you have a problem with that." he sighed, tying his laces and standing up energetically, not to serious about the issue.

"hyunjin's okay." wooyoung got out, the words normal but the next forced. "you don't know jeongin that well, that's all."

"so? he did go to my high school so we're not too different. you don't know him either." san replied innocently, hand on the door knob as he turned his head one last time to his sulking boyfriend.

"but i thought-" wooyoung broke off, a quizzical look contorting his features. "didn't jeno and jaemin-"

"no time to chat." san brushed him off, flashing a smile before exiting the room and closing the door.

he was also confused at the situation jeongin had proposed them to be in, but at the time he just assumed he had mixed up his intel or heard something wrong.

jeongin had claimed to go to san's high school, despite never having seen him around, but then he had told them of his friend jaemin, who transferred with lee jeno away from that supposed school. to san's school, apparently, because he was 100% sure the couple in question had transferred to his own high school which just hurt his head more.

and then hyunjin, who definitely hadn't gone to san's high school, claimed to know jeongin from his own high school, which further made no sense to san at all. either the younger was lying about what school he went to or one of them got their information wrong.

but why would jeongin lie?

he pondered the question his whole journey, useless thoughts probing his mind and creating the perfect tinder for an explosive headache.

san tried to brush all the thoughts away, deciding to just ask the younger boy straight forward when he saw him.

on his way, he saw yeosang and yunho alone, appearing to be in a heated argument. he hesitated, almost intervening, but as soon as the two saw him, yunho grabbed yeosang's shoulder and forced him to turn away, ignoring san entirely.

the sight hurt and confused san, because yeosang seemed like he had wanted to come up to him, but yunho, of all people, had stopped him.

he decided to follow them, quickening his pace to catch up with the pair or catch what either were saying.

when he got close enough, he slowed his pace and was about to reach over to tap yunho on the back, but yeosang suddenly lashed out with his shouts again, causing san to draw back.

"so you're just not going to tell him?!" his friend questioned harshly, and san recognised the hurt and aggressive tone he was all too familiar with.

"for the last time, yeosang, no! you can't just rush in and ruin his relationship without a second thought about his feelings!" yunho shot back through gritted teeth.

"we can't do nothing! we can't stand back and let that asshole-"

"yeosang, shut the fuck up! you have to trust san's judgement. we can't even trust the source-" wait, what?

"can't trust the source?! yunho, i think we can! are you really going to take a back seat while this guy-" the last of the words weren't audible for san to hear, the other two having walked out of earshot while the poor boy stood unmoving, having no idea what his friends were on about.

he turned apprehensively, a weight on his shoulders as he shuffled confusedly away. yunho had always been the most rational one in their friendship, and yeosang had always been the one to stay unbothered about every situation. when he acted out it was always for something serious - and he was infamous for not thinking twice before doing something when he thought the cause was just enough.

that's what really messed with san, because he couldn't remember the last time he had seen his old friend that distressed and insistent on something. yunho and yeosang clearly had juxtaposing views and whatever the situation may have been, but it had brought them together. which drew san to the conclusion that the situation concerned him.

his friends had often forgot their differences or discarded petty fights if it meant the benefit of san, the troubled boy always a higher priority who the others felt a duty to protect.

how things had changed, san thought bitterly. but he had only himself to blame.

maybe his decisions were just as selfish and unthought out as yeosang proclaimed them to be.

perhaps his friends should have been a higher priority than the guy he liked, just how he had always been for them.

don't think like that. he chided, the images of a laughing boy no one really knew splashing water at him entering his mind and warming him immediately.

wooyoung was worth so much. his friends would have to get over it eventually, and san would keep trying to mend their little fight until they could go back to how they were before.

"san!" he looked up at the sound of his name to see jeongin and hyunjin, the younger waving enthusiastically.

"hi," he smiled hesitantly, blinking a couple of times before going over to them.

"you dyed your hair!" hyunjin exclaimed excitedly, and san touched his black locks habitually.

"you don't say." san answered, eyes flickering over to jeongin.

"are you okay?" hyunjin questioned, narrowing his eyes in a concerned way and looking san up and down.

san shrugged, shoving his hands in his pockets and enjoying a slight tickling breeze caressing his skin like the ghost of a lover.

"i heard yunho and yeosang talking," he explained, eyes fixated on his feet as the trio walked. "it seemed pretty serious. but when they saw me they walked away."

"oh." hyunjin put a friendly arm around san in comfort, but his voice betrayed something else.

"neither of you seem surprised." san looked between the two of them as they exchanged glances, and jeongin bit his lip ruefully.

"well when i talked to yeosang earlier," jeongin started, playing with his hands. "he ended up pretty angry, so-"

"wait," san made a time out sign. "how do you know yeosang?"

"i don't." jeongin shrugged. "but i heard he had some information for one of san's new friends, so i stepped in..." as he talked, his expression grew more worried, and he kept playing nervously with the hem of his shirt.

"what information?" san questioned, and hyunjin rolled his eyes, putting his other arm around jeongin and walking in between the two conversing boys slowly.

"it's common knowledge, really. don't worry about it." hyunjin replied lightly. "everyone who knows wooyoung knows it. where is your boyfriend, anyway?"

"probably off getting high somewhere." jeongin grumbled, scrunching his nose.

"what?" san stiffened, whipping his head upwards.

"i was making a joke-" jeongin fumbled, features falling. "'cause we were on the topic-"

"wooyoung doesn't... i mean... he smokes, but-" san insisted, struggling for the right words.

hyunjin couldn't help a laugh. "san, wooyoung is infamously a literal drug addict. jeongin's not far off, he usually meets joong on sundays-"

the words weren't registering with san. they didn't make sense. "you don't know wooyoung as well as you think you do," he defending confidently. "he's smart enough not to do serious drugs."

at this point hyunjin realised san really was clueless. "san." he said gently, glancing at him sadly. "i think you're the one who doesn't know wooyoung well enough."

san shook his head, his throat constricting and eyes becoming glassy. wooyoung wouldn't. he wouldn't. san couldn't deal with that again. he couldn't.

"do you know wooyoung at all?"
